Zusammenfassung: Die "Burgerausstellung" ist durch ihre Verbindung sozialwissenschaftlicher, partizipativer und kunstlerischer Elemente ein Umsetzungsbeispiel angewandter performativer Sozialwissenschaft. Die Methode entstand in den 1990er Jahren bei der Vermittlung qualitativer Methoden und gemeindespsychologischer Ansatze an Studierende der Psychologie. Die Burgerausstellung kombiniert qualitative Methoden wie Interview und Textinterpretation mit kunstlerisch-asthetischen Methoden wie Fotografie und Film zu einem Gesamtkonzept. In diesem Jahr erschien die Studie »Entwicklung der Zivilgesellschaft in Ostdeutschland. Quantitative und qualitative Befunde«. Sie präsentiert eine umfassende Untersuchung der ostdeutschen Engagementkultur. Es geht besonders um die vertiefende Erschließung längerfristiger Besonderheiten der ostdeutschen Zivilgesellschaft. Daraus wird eine Förderstrategie des Bürgerengagements abgeleitet, die den Besonderheiten Ostdeutschlands gerecht wird. Es zeigt sich, dass moderne Ansätze der Engagementförderung in Ostdeutschland noch wichtiger sind als in Westdeutschland.

Kooperationsnetze und lokale Governance-Formen Am Beispiel Ostdeutschlands zeigt sich, wie hartnäckig ein Negativ-Image sein kann. Obwohl gerade in den letzen Jahren immer wieder in einzelnen Regionen beeindruckende Wachstumsprozesse zu beobachten sind, überwiegen nach wie vor die negativen Diagnosen hinsichtlich der wirtschaftlichen und demografischen Entwicklung in den neuen Bundesländern: Diese Situation ist geprägt durch eine überproportional hohe Arbeitslosigkeit, eine schwache Wirtschaftsstruktur und eine zunehmende Abwanderung der jungen Bevölkerung. Aktuelle Studien prognostizieren einen anhaltenden Bevölkerungsrückgang, der insbesondere ländliche Räume betrifft (vgl. z. B. Kröhnert u. a. 2006; Kocks 2003). 1 Bislang wurde der "Aufbau Ost" meist als Problem der Wirtschafts-und Industriepolitik, allenfalls noch der Arbeitsmarktpolitik gesehen. Nur langsam entwickelt sich ein Bewusstsein dafür, dass eine nachhaltige Regionalförderung auch demografische Faktoren und partizipative Strukturen im räumlichen Kontext berücksichtigen sollte. Auch die Ostdeutschlandforschung müsste stärker konkrete räumliche Strukturen fokussieren, und hier wiederum auch zivilgesellschaftliche Rahmenbedingungen für die Lebensentwürfe, Bleibeentscheidungen und Familiengründungen der Bürgerinnen und Bürger. Die Frage nach besonderen Perspektiven Ostdeutschlands in Bezug auf das freiwillige bzw. bürgerschaftliche Engagement sowie nach spezifischen Hemm-und Unterstützungsfaktoren hinsichtlich dieses Engagements markiert dabei ein noch wenig erkundetes und relativ neues Forschungsfeld.

Die Auswirkungen steigender Verbreitung von Anwendungen im Informationsund Kommunikationstechnologien (IKT) auf städtische Strukturen in Europa ist der Gegenstand des vergleichenden Forschungsprojekt Tele City Vision. Das Papier leitet ein mit einem knappen Überblick, inwiefern sich die enthusiastische Einschätzung hinsichtlich des Potentials von IKT seit dem Platzen der IT-Blase im Frühjahr 2000 änderte. Es überdenkt daraufhin den ursprünglichen Projektansatz noch einmal und stellt drittens die Untersuchungsergebnisse im Rahmen steigender Städtekonkurrenz vor.

RACE2050 foresight study aims to identify key success factors for a sustainable growth of the European Transport industry and for policies which can increase its strength in a long perspective up to 2050. By integrating the tremendous available foresight intelligence into a comparative synopsis, we will be able to compare and assess various visions and especially different policies to reach these goals. The results of this analysis will be discussed with experts from the transport industry, research, policy, and the foresight field. By this, we will come up with weighted explanations and long duree core concepts for a sustainable strength of the European transport industry.

In this introduction to the topical collection on the BFuture of Transport in Europe^, we argue that European transport regimes are at a turning point and despite the sector inertia, we can detect cultural, societal, and technical shifts. In this article, we assume that these shifts are central in defining possible future trends, far beyond their current fragile relevance. Such an analysis steps further into the technological realm, and targets social, industrial and political issues, which could affect the future of transport up until 2050, with a special focus on the post-ownership economy. Thus, we frame both technological innovations and societal shifts, aiming to discuss the future of transport as a socio-technical construction, far beyond the commercial and economic debate. In the conclusion, we report briefly on how two conflicting elements are now relevant for the future of transport, namely inertia and innovation: both can play a significant role in opening up different transport regimes in the future, or tying us to a repletion of old patterns. This special issue of The Journal of Transport History focuses on the history of shared taxis, aiming to uncover the complex and partly forgotten history of this service. Parallel to the rise of the passenger car in the twentieth century, taxi services developed (or shifted) from using horse-drawn carriages to using automobiles. In urban transport, taxis services are defined as filling the gap between systems of urban mass transport and the development of motorized individual car ownership. Historical analysis of the taxi business is limited to few places only, 1 such as the well-organized taxi service in Manhattan, recently investigated by Graham Hodges. 2 In contrast to this geographical limitation, the global scope of the special issue covers case studies in Africa, Latin America and Europe. Taxi services, and, to a greater extent, shared taxis services, have been a long neglected field of research. In general, most aspects of the history of taxi services are still unwritten. While both individually owned and individually used motor vehicles, as well as public mass transport, have attracted much scholarly attention, taxis services have been seen as marginal. Historically, most urban mass transit companies were large, hierarchical and powerful and displayed great political influence. In order to keep their strength, they fought competitors and eventually gained a monopoly, crowding private bus lines and shared taxis out of the market. 3 In the 1930s, the private light railway company in Hamburg even crowded out bicycle traffic in the city to secure its profits. 4 This led both to a damnatio memoriae for the taxi service in general and the rise of the shared taxi experience in particular. While uncertainty, incertitude, unknown and nescience is not only an accepted but favoured attitude within scientific debates, it is less allowed in science communication to and with society. In science communication, still affirmative messages are expected and thus delivered. The societal expectation against scientific messages obviously was and is transformed into an inner expectation of scientists against themselves. The paper-after giving an overview on the lively discussion about scientific uncertainty and nescience (landscapes of uncertainties)-presents a new tool for the communication of scientific uncertainties in "Maps of Uncertainties". These maps are a new inverse form of infographics, which shall allow a different communication of uncertainties and thus a different science-society-relation. Developing innovative and marketable products and services and maintaining innovation capacity are basic prerequisites for a company’s economic success and present implicit challenges in the adaptation to twenty-first-century needs. These success factors are put at risk by silo mentalities and by insufficiently pronounced cross-departmental knowledge transfers. The rapid adoption of ridesourcing poses challenges for researchers and policymakers in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), as it is an evolving new transport mode, and there is little research explaining its effects on mobility behaviors in this region. There is a concern that ridesourcing, which offers convenient and relatively cheap door to door services, encourages citizens to replace their sustainable travel modes, like walking, with car use. This effect has been studied relatively well in metropolises of the West, but less in the MENA agglomerations. This paper investigates whether regular use of ridesourcing impacts the walking mode choice in Cairo and Tehran. The analysis uses the results of 4926 face-to-face interviews in these two cities to compare the preference for using a vehicle instead of walking between regular users of ridesourcing and other motorized modes, including public bus, urban transit rails, private car, and traditional taxi. Despite the growing share of ridesourcing services in cities, there is limited research about their impacts on other transport mode choices in the large cities of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). There is a debate about whether ridesourcing affects the frequent use of sustainable modes like public transport. This study uses the results of a large-scale series of face-to-face interviews in Tehran and Cairo to study the relationship between the regular use of ridesourcing and the frequency of public transport use. Descriptive statistics and logit regression are used to analyze this association. The findings indicate contradictory correlations between the regular use of ridesourcing and the frequent use of public transport in Tehran and Cairo. The regular use of ridesourcing has a positive correlation with the probability of frequent public transport use in Cairo. Regarding the sharp growth rate of ICT (information and communication technology)—based mobility services like ridesourcing, it is essential to investigate the impact of these new mobility services on the transport mode choices, particularly on active mobility modes like cycling. This impact is more important in the MENA context (the Middle East and North Africa), where cycling does not constitute the main mobility mode in the modal split of most MENA cities. This paper studies the relationship between the regular use of ICT-based mobility services like ridesourcing and the tendency to cycle to near destinations. This paper contains the analysis of 4431 interviews in two large cities of the MENA region (Cairo and Tehran). Der Beitrag beschaeftigt sich mit den Hintergruenden, Zielsetzungen und Inhalten des derzeit im Aufbau befindlichen Forschungs-Informations-System Verkehr, Staedtebau, Raumordnung und Wohnungswesen (FIS). Hauptziel von FIS ist es, zu den wichtigen und aktuellen Fragen der politischen Handlungsfelder Verkehr-Bauen-Wohnen den Stand und die Positionen der Forschung in uebersichtlicher Form zu praesentieren. Damit soll der Zugriff auf das kontroverse aktuelle Forschungswissen erleichtert und dessen Anwendbarkeit im politischen Alltag verbessert werden.
