Suivons les quais jusqu'à la gare d'Austerlitz. Nous prendrons le train pour Brive-la-Gaillarde. ... more Suivons les quais jusqu'à la gare d'Austerlitz. Nous prendrons le train pour Brive-la-Gaillarde. À l'arrivée nous attendra une micheline qui nous amènera à Figeac. Une « auto » nous fera franchir les derniers kilomètres qui nous séparent de Fourmagnac, petit village de moins de 200 âmes niché dans la campagne quercinoise. Une courte marche nous conduira à l'abord d'une maison de maître isolée à flanc de coteau, entourée d'un vaste domaine planté de vieux arbres. Levant les yeux, nous discernons au premier étage un homme penché à une fenêtre. Il semble contempler le paysage, à travers des lunettes à large monture : il voit l'arbre, il perçoit la chaleur du soleil, il entend l'oiseau... Il entend aussi les voix qui l'appellent, c'est l'heure du café. Il rejoint sa famille au salon du rez-de-chaussée : sa femme May, ses filles Isabelle et Anne, ses gendres. Il interroge ses petites-filles sur leurs découvertes de la matinée. Visiteurs invisibles, nous parcourons du regard la vaste pièce, ornée d'une multitude de tableaux aux couleurs allègres : paysages, bouquets, natures mortes, bateaux, nus féminins, promenades au bord de l'eau, jeunes femmes avec leurs enfants, conversations au jardin, portraits... Mais déjà l'homme à l'épaisse chevelure blanche s'est levé, il disparaît, il a retrouvé sa chère table de travail, il s'est remis à écrire. Ce n'est pas par goût du pittoresque que j'entame ainsi mon éloge de Bernard d'Espagnat. Pour ce savant recherché qui a parcouru le monde, Fourmagnac en est le centre. Pour ce physicien, ce philosophe, scrutateur de l'univers quantique qui ne livre à notre intuition rien qu'elle puisse reconnaître, qui plonge notre raison dans une perplexité sans fond et fait taire toute émotion autre que purement intellectuelle, la beauté du monde est une ressource vitale. Il la découvre, enfant, à Fourmagnac, au détour d'une promenade à bicyclette. Il l'évoque trois quarts de siècle plus tard, dans un manuscrit qu'il destinait à sa famille et à son successeur à l'Académie et que m'ont transmis sa fille Anne et son époux Renaud Bachy, ici présents. C'est la beauté du monde dont son père, le peintre Georges d'Espagnat dont nous avons aperçu à l'instant quelques oeuvres, capte les multiples facettes. C'est elle qui guide le fils, tout au long de ce qu'il appelle sa quête de l'Être : elle est pour lui à la fois donnée, signe et source de joie. Donnée, car nous en avons une perception immédiate ; signe vers une réalité ultime ; joie comme aliment d'une vie énergique et pleine, comme moyen de se rapprocher concrètement de l'Être.

One is that groups are often much better than individuals at dealing with certain situations or solving certain problems. The other is that groups are usually, and some say always, at best as intelligent as their average member and at worst even less than the least intelligent. Consistency would seem to be easily re-established by distinguishing between advanced, sophisticated social organizations which afford the supporting communities a high level of collective performance, and primitive, mob-like structures which pull the group towards the lower end of the achievement scale. But this reconciliation meets with some objections. The most familiar ones concern the mixed record of elaborate social systems, which are said to occasionally or even, according to some accounts, systematically produce wrong decisions, poor assessments, disastrous plans, counterproductive measures, etc. A more recent set of objections rests on cases where 'crowds', i.e. groups not organized in a sophisticated way, produce good results, in fact, results which better those of most, or even all, members of the group. Many such cases are collected in James Surowiecki's book The Wisdom of Crowds, which argues more generally in favor of an 'order out of chaos' view of collective thinking: whether sophisticated or simple, social organizations for the production of knowledge or problem-solving can benefit from the absence of certain individualistic constraints which are traditionally thought to foster excellence in cognitive tasks. This flavor of paradox is enhanced by Surowiecki's choice of phrase: at the surface level, 'wisdom of crowds' conflicts with the well-entrenched cliché of the folly 1 of crowds; but at a deeper level, Surowiecki seems to appeal to one frequent connotation of 'wisdom' which is precisely its paradoxical character. Whether Surowiecki actually intended to exploit this connotation is not entirely clear, as he uses 'wisdom', 'intelligence' or even sometimes 'knowledge'; and similarly, 'wise', 'intelligent', and even 'smart', interchangeably 2 .

(a) We do not yet have a mature science of emotion, or even a consensus viewin this respect we are more hesitant than Sander, Grandjean, and Scherer (henceforth "SGS") or Luiz Pessoa (henceforth "LP"). Relatedly, a science of emotion needs to be highly interdisciplinary, including ecology, psychology, neuroscience, and philosophy. (b) We recommend a functionalist view that brackets conscious experiences and that essentially treats emotions as latent variables inferred from a number of measures. (c) But our version of functionalism is not definitional or ontological. It is resolutely methodological, in good part because it is too early to attempt definitions.

We defend a functionalist approach to emotion that begins by focusing on emotions as central stat... more We defend a functionalist approach to emotion that begins by focusing on emotions as central states with causal connections to behavior and to other cognitive states. The approach brackets the conscious experience of emotion, lists plausible features that emotions exhibit, and argues that alternative schemes (e.g., focusing on feelings or on neurobiology as the starting point) are unpromising candidates. We conclude with the benefits of our approach: one can study emotions in animals; one can look in the brain for the implementation of specific features; and one ends up with an architecture of the mind in which emotions are fully accommodated through their relations to the rest of cognition. Our article focuses on arguing for this general approach; as such, it is an essay in the philosophy of emotion rather than in the psychology or neuroscience of emotion.
