While much has been written on Joy Division and the cultural impact and resonances of both the mu... more While much has been written on Joy Division and the cultural impact and resonances of both the music and their visual legacy (particularly in terms of photography and design), little has been written of the sparse moving image record that exists of them. This chapter takes an overview of the various instances that Joy Division were recorded onto film and video while they performed and locates these recordings with regard to both the mainstream broadcast television sector at the time and emerging alternative ‘independent’ media practices.

It aimed to bring theorists into contact with a range of sound practitioners and also to bring together (and into dialogue) a range of scholars already working on different aspects of sound, e.g., radio, video, sonic arts and electro-acoustic music.

Video: Nick Cope, Sound: Tim Howle Duration: 10.00 minutes Previous iterations of this work have ... more Video: Nick Cope, Sound: Tim Howle Duration: 10.00 minutes Previous iterations of this work have been called Flags, (1, 2 and 3) and as more layers of material have been added we have resisted forward propulsion. There is no real goal-orientation and the material can be described as ambient. This fourth incarnation of the work builds on a single monitor work originally presented at a festival celebrating the work of Cornelius Cardew featuring a single shot of Tibetan Buddhist prayer flags filmed on a hillside at Ganden Monastery, near Lhasa, Tibet. A second version of the work introduced another shot juxtaposed with the first from prayer flags shot by Namtso Lake, Tibet, additional sounds have been introduced that attempt limited levels of intervention that chime with the images. The exploitation of the inherent musicality of the images emphasizes timelessness and continuity through a quasi-improvisational approach, mirroring and counterpointing objects in the image. Breast cancer is a heterogeneous group of tumours with variable prognosis. It is the second leadi... more Breast cancer is a heterogeneous group of tumours with variable prognosis. It is the second leading cause of cancer related death among women.Hereditary breast cancers (HBC) showed around ten percent of the total burden of breast cancer. Most of the breast cancer cases found due to a BRCA germ line mutation. According to estimation, 15-20% breast cancer patients to have one or more 1st or 2nd degree relatives affected with breast cancer. The factors included the genotypic and phenotypic heterogeneity. Many studies found association of HBC with different carcinoma syndromes. The most common association is with ovarian carcinoma so known as hereditary breast ovarian (BO) carcinoma syndrome involving BRCA1 and 2 mutations. Some other factors like reproductive risk factors including age at diagnosis of breast cancer, pregnancy history, and twin history were also studied and were found associated with breast cancer risk. In this review it is reported that knowledge of genetics of hereditary breast cancers may contribute to identification of patient's increased risk of disease. These patients could be subjected to genetic counseling that can be definitely benefited from early diagnosis.

On the occasion of his installation ‘Whispering in the Leaves’ at the Sunderland Winter Gardens c... more On the occasion of his installation ‘Whispering in the Leaves’ at the Sunderland Winter Gardens commissioned for AVFest 2008, Sounding Out , the international academic conference on sound and the moving image, took the opportunity to interview Newcastle based and world-renowned sound recordist, experimental musician and sound artist Chris Watson about his work. From founder member of Sheffield-based electronic music pioneers Cabaret Voltaire, via sound recording work for Tyne Tees Television and the Royal Society of Birds, Chris has gone on to win a BAFTA award for his work on David Attenborough’s ‘Life of Birds’, working on numerous wildlife documentaries, radio programmes, music and sound art projects, films and computer games.
