Scholarship exploring digital data and digital identity in the cinematic industry, and more specifically in cinema-going, is very limited. Therefore fact-finding, semi-structured expert interviews were conducted with professionals working in cinema exhibition in order to establish how digital data is used within the cinema exhibition industry. This paper is part of a bigger project on mapping the contemporary cinema-going experience involving digital activities, interactions and platforms. It concentrates on highlighting the differences among different data-related practices and strategies depending on the type of cinema as well as creating a map of which data is collected, how, why, and what is its value for the exhibitionists. Furthermore, it also distinguishes the visions and aspirations between art house cinemas and chain commercial cinemas with regards to how the integration of digital technologies and the use of data towards the profit of the audience, can eventually enhance the contemporary cinema-going experience. Last but not least, it presents not only the differentiations and similarities on an organisational structure level but also the diversity of data handling within each institution and its staff.

Until now, the cinema-going experience has been mostly discussed in Film Studies, from either a historical or industrial and architectural perspective. There has been some research on the contemporary cinema-going environment (Atkinson, 2014) but it’s limited when it comes to technology and digital data with regards to the experience itself. This project is looking at moviegoing rituals by adopting a Human- Computer Interaction approach, where technology and design are based on the actual needs and thoughts of the audience aiming to enhance their experience.
This paper explores the position of cinema-going within digital culture as audiences designed it. It presents cinema audiences’ perspectives on the experience of cinema-going rituals and how the data produced each time they engage with a cinema either physically or digitally could be aggregated to benefit the user. This proposal will use results of a participatory design workshop where participants were asked to do data mapping and based on it proceed with sketches and low prototype designs of how this data can be used to improve their moviegoing rituals.

Combining methods from the fields of Human Computer Interaction and Film Studies, we conducted two workshops seeking to understand cinema audiences' digital practices and explore how the contemporary cinema-going experience is shaped in the digital age. Our findings suggest that going to the movies constitutes a trajectory during which cinemagoers interact with multiple digital platforms. At the same time, depending on their choices, they construct unique digital identities that represent a set of online behaviours and rituals that cinemagoers adopt before, while and after cinema-going. To inform the design of new, engaging cinema-going experiences, this research establishes a preliminary map of contemporary cinema-going including digital data and platforms. We then discuss how audiences perceive the potential improvement of the experience and how that would lead to the construction of digital identities.

The aim of the project was to explore how organisations can give more control over the data that individuals share when conducting personal data transactions. We focused on personal data sharing and trust via user experience (UX) design and prototyping methodology. This report describes the process we followed along with findings, and concludes on how the outcomes encouraged us to further develop the tested ideas. Our main research question was: How can transparency and users' trust in organisations collecting personal data be improved? Is the idea of a 'consent receipt' a suitable tool for doing this?

Researching the transparency of personal data sharing: designing a concert receipt

We focused on personal data sharing and trust using user experience (UX) design and prototyping methodology. The motivation of this project was to help citizens understand why we capture their personal data, how it benefits them, and evaluate the idea of a consent receipt. A consent receipt being a receipt that tracks a user’s consent by making a record of it, just like a regular receipt is used to track purchasing of products. Consent receipts allow: users to understand the data their share, where it goes, who has it and why users and organisations to keep a proof of consent and enable consistent consent practices organisations to simplify terms and conditions. Following this, we wanted to leverage the consent receipt standar...
