Irrespective of this neglect, it still remains the umbrella sheltering both human and material resources and the engine propelling the educational and research goals of any university. This paper explored the origin of academic library and the principles behind establishing the library as space and place in an academic environment. It also tried to point out different reasons for using the library by different people. Some implications of library as space and place were given and suggestion made for the appreciation of library building as an area of study in library and information science profession.

The apparent death of academic libraries, as measured by declining circulation of print materials, reduced use of reference services, and falling gate counts, has led to calls for a more "social" approach to academic libraries: installing cafés, expanding group study spaces, and developing "information commons." This study compares these social models with the traditional academic library, whose spirit is best understood as "communal." It argues that this communal spirit is unique, and greatly valued by academic library users. Efforts to create a more social academic library threaten this communal spirit, and may do more harm than good.

Стаття торкається проблеми запізнілого і розгубленого пояснення процесів у сучасній архітектурі на рівні архітектурної теорії. Аналізуючи природу соціо-культурного розвитку останнього десятиліття, зроблено акцент на феномені зміненого формату людської особистості рубежу ХХ-ХХІ століть, який розглядається як перспективна точка відліку тлумачення актуальних архітектурних явищ.

Based on a short evolutionary introspection of  skyscraper`s history, article shows how the relation of philosophical, social and industrial factors within each of historical periods led to the transformation of the high-rise building`s image from its occurrence in "Chicago School" practice up to its prospects for the twenty-first century.
Further development of architectural theory is incomplete without disclousure of the problem of image of XXI century`s high-rise building, in which industrial experience sublimates outlook of information society.The article concerns the "ideal" of the skyscraper or  high-rise building of the XXI century.
Рroposed analysis is based on interpretation of the category of "visual consciousness". The "visual consciousness" considers living space within a communicative social outlook that emerged under the influence of intense development of media in early XXI century. In this sense "visual consciousness", is considered as one of the main factors of architecture evolution in XXI century, and in the short run period will be implemented through the instruments of public expectations about architectural object and its characteristics.
At this stage of postmodern, neo-modern and neo-historical architecture experience a common aspiration to create a form-event, which thus replaces the typical for Modernism form-function. This changing of motivation is seen as the first reason for creating a new image of high-rise building in the twenty - first century.
Designing form-event instead of form-function automatically changed the perception of man's place in this environment. From a role of functional filler, he turned to the position of information recipient. The building again entered a time of communicative dialogue with the man, the lack of which was one of the biggest challenges of modernism, abstract immutability and whose crystal purity intensified understanding of earthiness and meanness vanities of man`s life. This, however, does not exhaust an anthropological dimension of transition from form-function to form-event. In some sense this transition touched the very basis of human existence because form-event, was able to re-fill the vacuum of intentionality and respond to basic needs of consciousness - to be directed to a specific image.
In addition to this, development of communication culture not just fill the "imagery" vacuum in human visual environment, but has launched a new system of consciousness formation. Within such a system, the consciousness not only got rich imaginative landscape, but this landscape was released from direct functional content dominance. This context can be described by metaphor from nineteenth century German philosophy formulated in short by Marx as a dyad between "kingdom of necessity" and "kingdom of freedom". But now, it has another focus: industrialism here is look like last stage of "kingdom of necessity" and informationalism - the first stage of the "kingdom of freedom."
Realization of this "event-consciousness" is characterized by a rich imaginative landscape whose contents are released from functional content and filled emotional and ethical nature ones. This understanding of "event- consciousness" is perceived as the second and main reason for creating the image of a high-rise building in the twenty - first century. Together, these two reasons set a future indications of high-rise building of XXI century, the main quality which are fragmentation and vertical segmentation, first signs of which are already intuitively present in a number of pilot projects, independently designed in different parts of the world.

Стаття торкається проблематики пошуків способів трактування сакральної будівлі в рамках модерністської проектної мови, які були характерними для українсько-візантійської традиції другої половини ХХ століття. За основний матеріал статті взято практику проектування церков у Західній Україні пострадянського періоду та творчий спадок одного із провідних архітекторів української діаспори Радослава Жука. The basic material of the article is based on practice of church design in post-Soviet West Ukraine and creative legacy of Radoslaw Zuk one of the leading architects of the Ukrainian diaspora.

НАРОД І ВЛАДА В ГАЛИЧІ ЯК ЗРАЗОК «ВІЗАНТІЙСЬКОЇ РЕСПУБЛІКИ» Стаття пропонує інтеґрувати політичну історію Галича рубежу ХІІ-ХІІІ ст. в сучасний візантиністичний дискурс із властивим радикальним переосмисленням уявлень про категорії «леґітимности» владних інституцій Східної Римської імперії. На відміну від Західної Європи, яка після падіння Риму під натиском варварських племен адаптувала принцип особистісного «божественного права», за якого влада була особистою власністю певного володаря, Візантія зберегла республіканське ментальне поле й уявлення про владу як власність народу (лише делеґовану певним особам). Ключовою категорією державотворення візантійського типу виступає поняття «політеї»-множини, яка є джерелом «базилеї»-царствености. Автор підкреслює виняткову близькість Галича до Східної Римської імперії. Обґрунтовується пропозиція сприймати політичну систему Галича ХІІ-ХІІІ ст. як виборну республіканську монархію візантійського типу. Це дозволяє переглянути традиційно антагоністичну картину політичного життя Галича як протистояння державотворчої основи персоніфікованої у князях та їхній владі і деструктивної основи, вкладеної у літописних «галичанах», «галицьких боярах» та ін. Це свого роду приклад найзрілішої реалізації республіканської культури, акцептований із його греко-римських джерел, поєднаних із традиціями давньослов'янської спільнотно-вічової культури. Окреслено три етапи еволюції Галицької політеї ХІІ-ХІІІ сторіч: а) слов'янсько-візантійський; б) візантійський і в) візантійсько-франкський. Розглянуто роль географічного розташування Галицької політеї, котра, з одного боку, онтологічно пов'язувалася з лаократією Нового Риму, а з другого-стала прикладом, а можливо, і першоджерелом, демократичних змін у країнах-сусідах Угорщині («Золота булла») та Польщі, які зазнали часткового розмивання парадигми особового «божественного права» латино-європейського типу.

Мета статті: виявити особливості ідилічних мистецьких сюжетів, пов'язаних із німецькою, єврейською та українською національною наративістикою. Здійснити спробу оцінка їх мотивуючого механізму. Методологією дослідження є застосування ідейно-сюжетного аналізу, методів порівняння і узагальнення. Наукова новизна полягає у розширенні розуміння сюжетного змісту деяких творів німецького, єврейського та українського мистецтва, в контексті їх націє-творчої мотивації. Висновки. Період творення модерних націй став великим викликом для мистецтва. Воно мало взяти участь у творенні мотивуючих емоцій, метою яких була солідаризація та зміцнення нових національних ідентичностей. Потенціал цих емоцій мав знаходитись на дуже високому рівні, адже нову ідентичність часто доводилось утверджувати за несприятливих умов. Важлива мотивуюча роль належить творенню образу «ідеального буття», доручення до якого обіцяла нова спільнота. Відтак, націє-творча сюжетність, так чи інакше, пов'язана із сакралізаційними настроями. Німецький живопис в добу романтизму оперував картинами ідилії, в якій, однак, присутні спогади про середньовіччя як епоху ще більшої перфектизованості. Так виникав мотивуючий потенціал «повернення» до епосу минулого. Для єврейської художньої культури характерною є традиція пов'язувати ідеальне буття зі священним містом Єрусалимом «повернення» до якого також творить мотивуючий потенціал. В українському мистецтві також присутні сюжети природної ідилії, але ситуація «ідеального буття» пов'язаного із внутрішнім станом людинивоїна «козака Мамая», яка, здобувши особисту свободу, використовує її для творчості. В результаті проведеного дослідження встановлено, що ідилічні сюжети, пов'язані із творенням модерних національних наративів у німецькому, єврейському та українському живописі, мають ряд спільних та відмінних рис. До спільних рис варто віднести присутність сакрального змісту та солідаризації навколо нього спільноти. Відмінними рисами є різний вектор спрямованості мотивуючого сюжету. В мистецтві, пов'язаному із німецьким наративом ідеального буття, він епохо-центричний, з єврейським наративом-місто-центричний, з українським-антропоцентричним.

Architectural and urban organization of Przemyśl in the era of Kievan Rus' remains a little-studied topic. Significant changes that city has undergone throughout history have almost completely leveled the spatial structure of the first centuries of its history, when it was the capital, and later, the second most important city in Halician Rus'. One of the few covered topics are the identification and localization of religious buildings of the X-XIV centuries. Sometimes, data about them is obtained from small crumbs of information preserved in medieval sources, as well as in archaeological materials. The article is devoted to the systematization and analysis of materials related to the mentions and localization of a number of churches in one of the suburbs of Przemysl called Zasanie (Zasiannia). The coordination of archaeological, cartographic and written data made it possible to more accurately determine the location and chronology of the occurrence of some objects that may date back to the Old Rus` time. Based on the chosen method of comparative analysis of written, cartographic and archaeological data, an attempt was made to territorially and chronologically locate the churches of the Eastern Rite of the Zasanie district in Przemyśl, which are mentioned in a number of historical sources. The study analyses a holistic vision of the city of the future, which is scattered in various documents and programmes of the European Union. The research relevance is predefined by the need to create a holistic vision that can act as an attractive representative of all current urban values in the mass culture and promote the qualities of environmental friendliness, inclusiveness, cohesion, sustainability, self-sufficiency, etc. The research aims to outline a holistic vision of the city of the future supported by EU documents necessary for the crystallisation of its historical identity. The research results were obtained by using the synthesis method. This study proposes to synthesise the following main conceptual groups of the discourse around the city of the future aimed at the ideals of optimal density, renewable self-sufficiency, techno-biosphere symbiosis, participatory cooperation, social cohesion, and multi-age valorisation. Each of these groups is first considered separately as a field of scientific attention, its main characteristics are given and evaluated in terms of usefulness for improving the urban environment. Next, an attempt is made to combine these groups employing a comprehensive analysis, the methodology of which is aimed at identifying common content nodes in the concepts and tools of each group. Subsequently, they are combined into a common conceptual system, an essential feature of which is the expansion of the interpretation of the features of each group as part of the features of other groups. This allowed to avoid the division of the current discourse around the image of the city of the future into different sectors and to work more effectively with the implementation and promotion of the values of the city image, which is supported by official documents of the European Commission, which is relevant for Ukraine, which seeks EU membership. The aim of the article is to reveal the tendency to use images of the Constantinople capital's architecture in the projects of sacred buildings in Galicia at the beginning of the XXI century. Under the hieratopy of New Rome means the special status of Constantinople - the sacred center of the World Christian (Roman) State. After the fall of Constantinople, the image of New Rome became available for reproduction in previously remote corners of the Byzantine world, including in the construction of the identities of certain modern nations formed in the nineteenth century. As a result of the analysis of descriptive, iconographic and cartographic material, the location of several non-existent temples of the Eastern Christian tradition in Przemyśl was determined and clarified. According to research, St. Trinity Church was located in a rectangle close to the square, now occupied by a residential building on Y. Slovatsky, 13 street (the so-called "rabbi's house"). Based on descriptions and cartographic materials, it is established that the locating of St. Michael Church on Pidzamche should consider significant changes in relief, which are associated with natural and anthropological factors.
