The painting Gelders landschap by A.J. van Wijngaerdts, owned by the Boymans Museum in Rotterdam,... more The painting Gelders landschap by A.J. van Wijngaerdts, owned by the Boymans Museum in Rotterdam, suffered water damage due to a leak during construction activities elsewhere in the building. Research on the paint and varnish was performed prior to treatment of the damaged area. The varnish showed yellowing and minute cracks, which affected the appearance. The structure of the paint layer and cross sections showed that the varnish as well as the binding medium of the paint were in some clotted and permanently damaged by polluted water. It was also discovered that Wijngaerdts used synthetic ultramarine and Schweinfurter or emerald green. The irregular, darkened varnish also initiated a study into the use of, and views on, varnishes in the nineteenth century. It was discovered that most nineteenth century varnishes consisted of mastic resin, mixed with oil and sometimes other resins to improve their properties. Contemporary sources mention the brightness of Wijngaerdts' colours and also that the degree of detail in his images was considered very important. On this painting the appearance is affected in a negative way by the yellowed varnish. It was therefore removed with a mixture of isopropyl alcohol and acetone in a gel of 30/o Klucel G. After that the painting was retouched and re-varnished.
