ABSTRACT Predicting weather and climate and its impacts on the environment, including hazards suc... more ABSTRACT Predicting weather and climate and its impacts on the environment, including hazards such as floods and landslides, is a big challenge that can be efficiently supported by a distributed and heterogeneous infrastructure, exploiting several kinds of computational resources: HPC, Grids and Clouds. This can help researchers in speeding up experiments, improve resolution and accuracy, simulate with different numerical models and model chains. Such numerical models are complex with heavy computational requirements, huge numbers of parameters to tune, and not fully standardized interfaces. Hence, each research entity is usually focusing on a limited set of tools and hard-wired solutions to enable their interaction. The DRIHM approach is based on strong standardization, well defined interfaces, and an easy to use web interface for model configuration and experiment definition. A researcher can easily compare outputs from different hydrologic models forced by the same meteorological model, or compare different meteorological models to validate or improve her research. This paper presents the benefit of a web-based interface for hydro-meteorology research through a detailed analysis of the portal (based on liferay-gUse) developed by the DRIHM project.

The paper presents a methodology to design and to develop personalizable educational content to b... more The paper presents a methodology to design and to develop personalizable educational content to be used by learning communities on the Web. As the cost of design and creation of educational materials for web-based courses is normally expensive and time consuming, there is an obvious advantage in exchanging course material between educators involved in the same field. To this end we are claiming that other than the adoption of re-use methodologies, a valuable saving is obtained by realizing content that best fits the actual needs of different students engaged in diverse learning scenarios. A methodology that couples re-use techniques with personalization methods is discussed and a layered modelling process is proposed. A system based on this model is considered, and some of its peculiar implementation aspects are highlighted. In particular, focus is placed on the benefits of using XML technology as a straightforward solution to our modelling requirements.

We describe the main lines of a teacher preparation model aiming to help teachers experience the ... more We describe the main lines of a teacher preparation model aiming to help teachers experience the opportunities and difficulties of using ICT (Information and Communication Technology) as a means for encouraging students to learn from and with peers. Based on our experience with in-service and pre-service teachers, we firstly discuss the levels of competence to be achieved by trainee teachers, putting them in relation with the training objectives. Then we introduce our model, and discuss the results of an experiment on the practical applicability of our ideas. With our work we intend to contribute to define innovations to be introduced in ICT training to support teachers in understanding how, and under what conditions, technology can support the emerging pedagogical practices that emphasise learner-controlled learning.

We present a distributed approach for Grid resource discovery, which combines a structured view o... more We present a distributed approach for Grid resource discovery, which combines a structured view of resources (single machines, homogeneous and heterogeneous clusters) at the Physical Organization (PO) level with a super-peer network connecting the various POs. The proposed architecture is modular and independent of the particular Grid middleware. After a general description, we present some implementation aspects which refer to the Globus Toolkit 4 as Grid middleware and to the JXTA platform to set-up the super-peer network. The system is particularly suitable for discovering resources for structured parallel applications on very large Grids.

Due to their complexity, the exploitation of Grid environments is not a trivial activity for many... more Due to their complexity, the exploitation of Grid environments is not a trivial activity for many users, and a key factor is to enable a simplified and transparent orchestration of resources and jobs. Particularly critical is the deployment of matching procedures capable to effectively meet user's requirements with resources offer. We introduce GREEN a management tool primarily devoted to the matchmaking process, based on a performance characterization of both resources and job requirements. Leveraging on a two-level benchmarking methodology, GREEN allows users to express performance preference through an appropriate extension to Grid submission and description languages such as JSDL and Glue. Operating at intermediate level between applications and Grid middleware, GREEN reduces the gap between users' needs and available resources thus enabling a seamless exploitation of the Grid.

In order to provide a better efficiency of computational jobs we propose an SLA-aware architecture. The core of this architecture is a scheduler relying on resource performance information. For performance characterization we propose a two-level benchmark that includes tests corresponding to specific e-Science applications. In order to evaluate the proposal we present simulation results for the proposed architecture.

Delivering cloud services with QoS requirements: An opportunity for ICT SMEs

The acknowledged success and diffusion of Cloud computing is due to its great potential in terms ... more The acknowledged success and diffusion of Cloud computing is due to its great potential in terms of improving companies' business model. Notwithstanding this opportunity, two main issues arise: the need of brokers supporting users in the selection of the most suitable offers, and the provisioning of dedicated services with higher levels of quality different from mere availability. This paper discusses the expected performance in a real-case scenario of a Cloud brokering tool delivering two services: e-Learning courses in virtual classroom and Risk Assessment evaluation, each with a specific set of nonfunctional requirements. The broker relies on the resources supplied by a hybrid Cloud infrastructure, allocated following different scheduling strategies, which dynamically select the proposals better satisfying the QoS requested by users. The objective is the execution of the highest amount of user requests along with the maximization of the profit of the private Cloud provider, in a context of posted price economic model.

An open issue to exploit Grid resources is related to job migration; possibly due to resource fai... more An open issue to exploit Grid resources is related to job migration; possibly due to resource failures (real or perceived ones) or to the violation of QoS, it may be required to migrate an entire job, or parts of it, to other resources and reschedule the job there. There are several research questions associated with the migration concept. The two most crucial ones are determination of metrics and conditions when to migrate, and the selection of the resource to migrate the job to. In this work, we propose to combine job migration with energy consumption indicators. The objective is to understand if it is possible to exploit the migration of jobs also to save energy. Thus the main question of this work is "Can job migration save energy?". In order to provide an answer, we define a simple model to evaluate the energy consumption related to Grid job migration. An adequate Grid infrastructure is assumed to actually enable job migration, and the proposed model will take into account the overhead arising from that infrastructure.

This seems particularly true for hybrid clouds that couple the scalability offered by generalpurpose public clouds with the greater control and ad hoc customizations supplied by the private ones. A hybrid cloud broker, acting as an intermediary between users and public providers, can support customers in the selection of the most suitable offers, optionally adding the provisioning of dedicated services with higher levels of quality. This paper analyses some economic and practical aspects of exploiting cloud computing in a real research scenario for the in silico drug discovery in terms of requirements, costs, and computational load based on the number of expected users. In particular, our work is aimed at supporting both the researchers and the cloud broker delivering an IaaS cloud infrastructure for biotechnology laboratories exposing different levels of nonfunctional requirements.
