This e-learning experience has been recently researched by numerous scholars in different settings. To systematically investigate this experience, the study inspects into faculty members' perspectives towards e-learning and their suggestions to improve e-learning and integration in the Jordanian universities. A questionnaire was developed to gather data from 166 participants at the University of Petra. The findings show that the faculty members greatly value the presence of infrastructure for distance learning as they perceived the lecturer's proficiency and self-assurance in online learning. Besides, the study perceives students' skill and confidence with high engagement with online instructional materials. Yet, the crucial challenges arise from the lack of a solid interpersonal connection with students during remote education, and the discomfort level of prolonged use of mobile phones or computer screens has also been reported. Furthermore, faculty members recommend some changes, like improving the quality of digital platforms and tools; developing more diverse and comprehensive assessment methods; enhancing psychological and social support for students; and redesigning curricula. It is expected that the current findings will assist the University of Petra, instructors, and students to improve the skills needed for e-learning.

Understanding the Jordanians' congratulation helps people from different cultures to understand them adequately. This study aims to investigate the congratulation strategies written in the graduation notebooks for undergraduate students at Jerash university. The writers of congratulations, typically the students' friends, classmates, and professors, are requested by the graduated students to pen their congratulations in their graduation notebooks after they completed their bachelor studies at the English language and literature department. To analyze the data, the congratulation strategies will be identified and then classified. A qualitative method involving observations and memos was used to collect data from 10 congratulatory notebooks. The study revealed that the students employed various congratulatory strategies, including congratulatory statements, happiness clauses, compliments, good wishes, and the ability to attach presents. It also suggests a potential area for future research, which could investigate the students' reactions to the congratulatory text to evaluate the perlocutionary act of the students. Another suggestion for future research is that compering the Jordanians strategies of congratulation with other society strategies of congratulations to shed the light to the similarities and differences between them.

This paper aims to present a critical review of the advantages and disadvantages that result from integrating ChatGPT into higher education. This study designed an online questionnaire. The online questionnaires were shared with undergraduate students at three Jordanian universities: Applied Science Private University, Jerash, and Petra via WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, Email, and LinkedIn. According to this research, the advantages of CHATGPT are saving time, getting immediate answers to various questions, writing for projects and homework, aiding in language learning, unified feedback, further learning material, and greater accessibility of information. Of course, there are disadvantages too: less critical thinking, only partial language capacity, incomplete knowledge of subjects, developing dependency on technology, misinformation, data privacy, and biased responses. The study concludes by recommending CHATGPT as a useful source of information, but its users must be sensitive to limitations and possible inaccuracies about the subject matter; fact-checking procedures must be done to establish whether the material is correct. Further, great care must be taken when using ChatGPT professionally to protect sensitive and secret information.

To achieve this objective, a questionnaire was developed and the validity and reliability of the questionnaire were checked. A simple random sampling was used forming a sample of 400 students. The results indicate that the online learning infrastructure is an immense barrier that obstructs the utilization of online learning in Jerash University. Also, there are statistically significant differences in the barriers that faced students while they are using online learning based on gender and studying year variables in favor of female and students of first year respectively. Moreover, the results of the study revealed that there is an interaction between gender and teaching year variables. Finally, in light of the results, the study recommended that additional efforts from decision makers and teachers should be taken into consideration for the sake of online learning process improvement.

Linguistic modification in teacher’s talk is essential part of classroom interaction as it facilitates students’ understanding by reducing complexity of syntactic structures and the use of familiar structures and words. Data in this study were collected through classroom observation and informal chats with the teacher. 15 classroom observations were carried out during the First Semester of the academic year 2019/2020. When necessary, informal chats with the teacher took place at the end of observation session to get further clarification of what had happened in the classroom. The teacher talk can be described as having high frequency of self-repetition, exaggerated pronunciation, slower rate of speech, avoiding contractions, use of short sentences and phrases, paraphrasing, avoiding idioms and unfamiliar words, and pausing were marked in teacher talk. Phonological, semantic and syntactic modifications in teacher talk ensured input comprehensibility, avoided confusion and encouraged classroom participation. This study concludes that linguistic modifications in teacher talk are necessary to ensure input comprehensibility and support students’ engagement in classroom interactions. The Facebook posts are considered to be protest discourse, with ideological imprints of positive “we” in-group representations and negative “they” out-group descriptions. Utilizing a critical-discourse analysis method, this study reveals that Facebook posts were efficiently used to define the ethnonational identity of the participants and to describe their goals and activities, as well as to provide continual updates on the protests. The activists used linguistic strategies (e.g., rural terms, pronouns, and humorous posts). The activists purposefully used the indigenous dialect (i.e., the rural Jordanian East-Bank dialect) to express solidarity and address indigenous ethnic aspirations. Consequently, the success of the Fourth Circle protests can be summarized in three great achievements, which are: (1) Prime Minister Hani Mulki’s resignation; (2) cancellation of the income-tax law;...

The study also examines how the use of passive voice affects readers' attitudes towards political issues. The use of passive voice can lead to ambiguity, affecting the clarity of meaning by hiding the identity of the doer of the action. However, being vague about the doer of the action is primarily deliberate in political news to serve particular purposes. To collect data, the researchers refer to three newspapers, namely The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and The Guardian. Some articles discussing political issues were carefully chosen from those newspapers. The analysis of the results reveals that the passive voice is used in the selected political news reports to fulfill four main purposes; first, when the journalist emphasizes the action rather than the doer of the action, he omits by phrase, replacing it with marginal information. Second, when the subject of the sentence i...

By adopting an affordance perspective, this study emphasis on how local Jordanian communities harness the power of Facebook during the 2018 Dead Sea flash flood. Through using an interpretive approach, three affordances of Facebook were identified, namely, disaster warning, volunteer mobilization, and the coordination of response and recovery. Then, the researchers examined how these affordances helped the Jordanian communities to respond to disaster situations and achieve social outcomes during the floods. Based on the data analysis, it has been noticed that Facebook changed the way individuals; organizations, activists, and government respond and act to the challenges posed by a disaster. This study contributes to the emerging literature on the use of Facebook in natural disasters in the Jordanian context. There is a hope that this research could inspire more researchers about the use of e...

The current study aims to explain how pragmatics can facilitate an understanding of the speech communications and convey the intended meaning. Furthermore, the study shows how encapsulated (implicit) meaning in many phenomena of pragmatics may fundamentally influence the nature and the quality of translation between Arabic, and English languages. In this regard, the study demonstrates the pertinence of pragmatics theories for translators’ work by providing authentic examples of translation between Arabic, and English languages. It argues how a pragmatically oriented process can perform the balance in human communication to avoid breakdowns of communication.

This mixed-methods study aimed at examining the effects of the blended learning approach on Jordanian EFL learners' grammar performance. The study also aimed at investigating the attitudes of Jordanian EFL learners toward blended learning. To achieve the objectives of the study, it employed a quasi-experimental design (pre and posttests) followed by qualitative interviews. The participants were divided into two groups: experimental and control groups. Among the 28 students in the sample, those in the experimental blended learning group (n=13) were taught using Moodle while those in the control group (n=15) were taught using conventional methods. All the 13 participants in the experimental group were interviewed. The results of the posttest revealed that students in the experimental group outperformed students in the control group. Furthermore, the qualitative analysis results showed that blended learning had a positive impact on the learners' English grammar performance and that they were strongly satisfied and motivated to learn English using similar methods. It is concluded that blended learning could be used as an effective method of teaching English grammar in EFL settings. It is hoped that these results will help the university, faculty, and students to develop the skills necessary for blended learning.

This study seeks to clarify English learning beliefs among EFL students in Jordan, and to examine whether female and male learners differ in these beliefs. Horwitz’s (1987) Language Learning Beliefs Inventory (BALLI) was adapted to gather relevant data from 83 English major participants at a private university during regular classes. Frequency analysis and T-tests were then performed utilizing SPSS. The findings demonstrate that while Jordanian students are not sure about language difficulty, they are highly enthusiastic about learning the English language. Furthermore, female and male students only had significantly different results in two aspects of BALLI: 1) motivation and expectations and 2) difficulty of language learning. Hopefully, the results will provide constructive insights to lecturers concerning students’ beliefs about learn...

The data were elicited from 200 students from two Jordanian universities, Irbid National University and Jadara University. To deal with content analysis data, the researchers created a special scheme based on Searel’s taxonomy. Six speech acts were found in students’ status updates on Facebook: expressive, assertive, directives, God’s invocation, quotation and humor. Also the study findings evidently indicate that the cultural norms and religious background profoundly rooted in all participants can strongly affect their linguistic choices in their native language. It is hoped that the results would help those involved in teaching and learning Arabic as a second/foreign language.

By drawing on John Dewey's concept of habit formation, Baron believes that after years of constant use of Netspeak, language learners will naturally employ the features of this language into their formal writing practice . This would happen when language violations such as spelling mistakes and the misuse of punctuations or capitalization have become acceptable and fossilized in learners' formal writing activities. This study will present findings of a research, primarily aimed at investigating the fossilization of errors in writing among ESL (Malaysians) and EFL (Jordanians) learners due to the aforementioned phenomenon. Two research methods were employed: a questionnaire that was designed based on Selinker's theory of interlanguage and the factors contributing to the use of lexical features of Netspeak, and semistructured interviews. Questionnaires were administered to 300 participants; 150 Asian students from one public university in Malaysia (representing the ESL learners) and 150 Middle East students from the Irbid National University, Jordan (representing the EFL learners). This study managed to provide some valuable insights on the issues, by demonstrating some new perceptions and ideologies pertaining to the ignorance of language consistency in formal writing practice, resulting from a constant use of Netspeak in the online communication environment.
