During the 1990s, archaeology moved to addressing theory-driven research questions. Consejo Naciona de Investigaciones Cientificas y Técnicas (CONICET-Argentina) researchers began to focus or understanding the capitalist expansion process and its connections to the daily lives of sealing communitie: in Antarctica (Senatore and Zarankin 1999; Zarankin and Senatore 2005). Organized by the Institutc Antartico Argentino, they conducted regional surveys and site excavations at Byers Peninsula on Livingstot Island during several fieldworks from 1995 to 2000 (Zarankin and Senatore 2007) (Figure 6). Subsequently international co-operation among Chilean, Australian, and Argentinian researchers resulted in sharec information, databases, publications, and joint fieldwork organized by INACH (see, e.g., Pearson et al 2008; Stehberg et al. 2008). During that period, more than thirty sealing sites were discovered and markec along the SSI coasts (Figure 7). Some of these were excavated and studied in detail, and they providec information about many diverse aspects of sealers’ daily experiences on land, and the relationships betweer sealing or whaling expeditions and capitalism’s globalization (e.g., Pearson and Stehberg 2006; Stehbers Figure 6.
