After the draining of the Nemi lake in 1932 the ancient wrecks could be salvaged. (Photo Museo scienza e tecnologia, Milano). Alberti had been commissioned by Cardinal Prospero Colonna, who was interested in archaeol- ogy, to search for the wreckage with a raft and apnea (breath hold) divers in Lake Nemi in 1446, but had little success. Perhaps Guillery hoped to have more success than Alberti in - LIKC DO Mali, UuULiery was active around the Curia in Rome, and it is not unlikely that both met there. Both were interested in Roman history. - From Guillery’s prints, we can deduce a historical interest, and since he was travelling in sci- entific circles, he may also have come into contact with meth- ods of diving underwater. The writings of Mariano di Jacopo (called Taccola) and Francesco di Giorgio Martini, which de- pict diving apparatus with long snorkels, may have been known to him, and the dive at the sunk- en galley at Civitavecchia may have been as much of archaeo- logical interest as those in Lake Nemi. It is possible that Guil- lery himself was too old for the dives in Lake Nemi and found someone in De Marchi to do them on his behalf. - Guillery had reprinted the book Momus o del principle
