During Varna I a majority of the buried population had access to items of different raw materials, while in the most elaborated burials only 6 different raw materials were represented (Fig. 6). In the following Varna II/III phase, the majority of the buried population was equipped with items made from only 1—3 different raw materials, while the most elaborated burials were equipped with up to 7 raw materials. Cramer (2005, 18) highlights, that the difference between a high consumption of prestige items by only a minor section of the population in combination with restricted access for the majority could lead to immense conflicts. Both effects (a reduced growth and a restricted accessibility of resources linked to increasing inequality) were proven fot Durankulak.
