According to Eco (1976), a semiotics theory provides: (i) a method of investigating how sign-vehicles may function as signs, and (ii) a means of understanding how a sign-vehicle may be produced and interpreted. In contrast to Peirce's triads, Eco’s semiotic theory is defined as non-referential, that is, expressions might be used to refer to things, but they are derived from a culture and the content established by this culture (Guillemette & Cossette, 2006). Therefore, a sign may take on different meanings within different socio-cultural contexts. The example presented in figure 5 is based on Eco’s revised Katz and Fodor (KF) model (Eco, 1976), to show contextual (cultural) effects in generating a sign’s meaning for the sign ‘C’.
