Great concern arises from recreational noise exposure, which might lead to noise-induced hearing loss in young adults. The objective of the current study was to evaluate the effects of recreational noise exposure on hearing function in young adults. A questionnaire concerning recreational noise exposures and an audiological test battery were completed by 163 subjects (aged 18-30 years). Based on the duration of exposure and self-estimated loudness of various leisure-time activities, the weekly and lifetime equivalent noise exposure were calculated. Subjects were categorized in groups with low, intermediate, and high recreational noise exposure based on these values. Hearing was evaluated using audiometry, transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs), and distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs). Mean differences in hearing between groups with low, intermediate, and high recreational noise exposure were evaluated using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). There were no significant differences in hearing thresholds, TEOAE amplitudes, and DPOAE amplitudes between groups with low, intermediate, or high recreational noise exposure. Nevertheless, onethird of our subjects exceeded the weekly equivalent noise exposure for all activities of 75 dBA. Further, the highest equivalent sound pressure levels (SPLs) were calculated for the activities visiting nightclubs or pubs, attending concerts or festivals, and playing in a band or orchestra. Moreover, temporary tinnitus after recreational noise exposure was found in 86% of our subjects. There were no significant differences in hearing between groups with low, intermediate, and high recreational noise exposure. Nevertheless, a long-term assessment of young adults' hearing in relation to recreational noise exposure is needed.

The study was designed to extend our understanding of illness perceptions in patients with bulimia nervosa (BN). Seventy-eight participants with BN or BN-type Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS-BN) completed the Revised Illness Perception Questionnaire (IPQ-R) (Moss-Morris et al., 2002). Clinical variables were also assessed. Participants experienced their ED as chronic, with serious consequences and high associated levels of anxiety and depression. The disorder was attributed primarily to psychological causes. The results indicate the perceived severity of BN, and high level of associated distress. These findings highlight the potential for targeting illness perceptions in treatment.

The study of human responses to sound generally recognises the great importance of taking into account the diversity existent in sounds and acoustics environments, but it rarely adopts the same approach with respect to the diversity in human beings and their responses, providing results as averages meant to represent the ‘normal’ response, and disregarding discrepancies as ‘outliers’. In this paper, neurodiversity and autism is presented as part of the aural diversity factors that can lead to having different experiences of sounds, and an ongoing doctoral research project aiming at representing autistic people’s experiences of the acoustic environment is introduced. Differences in perception of sounds can entail different challenges and needs, that are not currently contemplated in acoustics and soundscape research. The authors believe that all these aspects ought to be considered to widen our understanding of the field, improve research and practice, and create acoustic environments that are not just designed for a limited part of the population.

In this article, we consider music and noise in terms of vibrational and transferable energy as well as from the evolutionary significance of the hearing system of Homo sapiens. Music and sound impinge upon our body and our mind and we can react to both either positively or negatively. Much depends, in this regard, on the frequency spectrum and the level of the sound stimuli, which may sometimes make it possible to set music apart from noise. There are, however, two levels of description: the physical-acoustic description of the sound and the subjective-psychological reactions by the listeners. Starting from a vibrational approach to sound and music, we first investigate how sound may activate the sense of touch and the vestibular system of the inner ear besides the sense of hearing. We then touch upon distinct issues such as the relation between low-frequency sounds and annoyance, the harmful effect of loud sound and noise, the direct effects of overstimulation with sound, the indirect effects of unwanted sounds as related to auditory neurology, and the widespread phenomenon of liking loud sound and music, both from the point of view of behavioral and psychological aspects.

Biometrics have been used in person authentication. However, conventional biometrics have a vulnerability to the identity theft, especially in user management systems. In order to prevent the identity theft, the effective way is to authenticate continuously. However, the continuous authentication requires unconscious biometrics. The authors have been studied to use brain waves as the unconscious biometrics. In conventional studies, the authors had used spontaneous brain waves; however, their verification performance was not so high. Thus, the authors propose to use evoked potentials by supersonic sounds, which cannot be perceived by human beings. In this paper, the authors examine the characteristics of evoked potentials by supersonic sounds and confirm that the spectrum in the α band is increased at the electrodes on the back of the head. This phenomenon could be used as an individual feature in person verification.
