Sivrihisar Great Mosque which was built in 1275, is one of the well preserved Seljuks Pe-mans. During the restoration of the Sivrihisar Ulu Mosque in 2015, the soil/ sediment, stone/rock, brick/tile, mortar and plasters belonging to the mosque were examined in situ and studied in a scientific research project. Analyzes were carried out in the Materials Research and Conservation Laboratory (MAKLAB) of the Department of Cultural Properties Conservation and Restoration, Faculty of Fine Arts, Ankara Hacı bayram Veli University. This study aimed the characterizations of the building materials (except mosque wooden materials) archaeometricaly. In the scope of archaeometric investigations, physical, chemical and petrographic analyzes were conducted on the samples. Basic physical tests (unit volume weight, water absorption capacity, porosity and rock hardness tests) were applied to determine the strength of stone, brick and tile specimens. Stone and brick samples had a high total salt content. Stone and brick samples were found to contain high amounts of carbonate, low amounts of salts in phosphate, sulfate and chloride species. Petrographic analysis showed that the type of the structural rocks, limestones beside monzonite and reused marbles were used in the walls of buildings. Constructive stones have different properties depending their different locations with petrographic and physical features. The origin of the high soluble salt content of bricks and limestones were the soil reservoir where transferred to the surface of the stones by capillary reaction. Aggregate/binder composition evaluated with the mortars and plasters were quite different. Of mortars and plasters were coarse and rounded aggregate content of the nearby river bed and rounded structure, reflecting the local rock formations.

Öz: Hasankeyf'in aşağı şehir olarak isimlendirilen Dicle Nehri kenarındaki kesimi, Ilısu Barajı ve Hidroelektrik Santralı (HEPP) Projesi'nin tamamlanmasıyla büyük bir bölümü su altında kalma tehdidi ile karşı karşıya bulunmaktadır. Bu alandaki kültürel mirasın belgelenmesi, korunması ve kurtarılmasına yönelik bütünleşik kurtarma projeleri oluşturulmuştur. Çalışmanın konusunu oluşturan Sultan Süleyman Cami Minaresi de, yeni Hasankeyf yerleşiminde oluşturulan arkeopark alanındaki yeni yerine bütünüyle taşınarak baraj gölü suları altında kalma tehdidinden kurtarılmıştır. Sultan Süleyman Cami Minaresi'nde gerçekleştirilen söküm işlemleri sonucu farklı seviyelerinden elde edilen derz/moloz dolgu harç örnekleri, çeşitli analitik metotlar kullanılarak arkeometrik yönden incelenmiştir. Sultan Süleyman Cami Minaresi'ne ait harç örnekler öncelikle görsel olarak incelendikten sonra yerinde ve laboratuvar ortamında fotoğraflanıp kodlanmıştır. Arkeometrik çalışmalar kapsamında örneklerin fiziksel, kimyasal ve petrografik özellikleri belirlenmiştir. Harçların birim hacim ağırlıkları ve gözeneklilik özelliklerine göre dayanım özellikleri belirlenmiştir. Bazik ortam şartlarındaki örnekler yüksek oranda suda çözünen tuzlar (anyonlar) içermektedir. Örneklerin ana agrega içeriğini kil/silt boyutundaki agregalar oluşturmaktadır. Petrografik yönden kireç türü bağlayıcı içeren harçlar genel özellikleri ile benzer halde dört farklı alt grup halinde sınıflandırılmıştır. Örneklerin agrega içeriğinde mukavemeti artırıcı olarak tuğla kırığı da belirlenmiştir. PED-XRF analizi ile harçların dolomitik özellik taşıdığı anlaşılmıştır.

Afyon tarihi kent merkezinde bulunan Ulu Cami'ye ait yapısal ve dekoratif malzemelerden (taş, tuğla, harç ve sıva katı, pigment, metal ve ahşap) oluşan örnekler, çeşitli analitik metotlar kullanılarak arkeometrik yönden incelenmiştir. Caminin inşasında kullanılmış olan taşlar yoğunlukla andezittir. Caminin cephelerinde ve minare kaidesinde kullanılan yapısal nitelikteki taşlar yakın çevre yerel kayaç formasyonunu doğrudan yansıtmaktadır. Cami ve minareden örneklenen tuğlalar özgün nitelik taşımaktadır. Caminin özgün taş/tuğla derz ve moloz dolgu harçları kireç ve kireç/kil karışımlı bağlayıcı içeriklerine sahiptir. Caminin özgün sıvaları günümüze malesef ulaşamamıştır. Caminin ahşap unsurları üzerinde yeralan pigment örneklerin renk bileşimlerini başta mangan (Mn), bakır (Cu) ve demir (Fe) olmak üzere gümüş (Ag), kalay (Sn), antimon (Sb), titanyum (Ti), vanadyum (V), neobyum (Nb), molibden (Mo) ve kurşun (Pb) oluşturmaktadır. Ahşap üzerinden örneklenen çivi/mıh örneklerin kimyasal yapısını da %97,26 ve %96,84 oranlarında demir (Fe) oluşturmaktadır.

The archaeometric exploration was conducted by surveying and sampling studies on the stone, and mortar samples from Akköprü in Ankara. Spot salt test and conductometric analysis were applied to get water soluble salt content of stone samples. The aggregate and binder part of the mortars were determined by the analyses of acidic aggregate & binder, aggregate granulometry, thin section optic microscopy and X-ray diffraction. In addition, the physical conditions of the stones were determined by some physical tests. The results of archaeometrical data showed that the constructive stone material was mainly andesite besides ignimbrite and dacite, and the original binder material was lime mortar. The study area is located within the borders of Tokat province, which is one of the richest provinces in Turkey in terms of gemstone diversity. The region has very high quality and various gemstone formations such as jasper, opal, chalcedony, agate, chrysoprase, which have both geological and commercial value. Metamorphic, magmatic, and sedimentary units from the Paleozoic to the present day crop out in the study area. While Paleozoic-Mesozoic Tokat metamorphics and Artova ophiolite mélange form the basement, the Almus formation, which is represented by Lower Miocene aged volcano-sedimentary rocks from the central parts of the area to the east, covers these units unconformably. There are several soils all around the world that collapse (experience significant settlement) when unusually subjected to amounts of water. Collapsible gypseous soil is one of the wide varieties of problematic soils. The gypseous ground can be found in dry and semi-arid areas. Here, gypsum deposits are common such as in Iraq. Gypseous grounds are considered as collapsible or metastable soils, considered any type of unsaturated soil, which reveals a radical rearrangement of soil particles and is disposed to a significant change in volume. Collapses occur when soils are wetted with water. This may additionally occur if soils are socked under loading [1, 2]. Gypsum is a hydrated calcium sulfate mineral CaSO4.2H2O having an intermediate solubility of 2.6.g/l at 25 ºC [3]. When the soil is dry, the gypsum in the soil structure functions as cement. Studying the properties of unsaturated soil with gypsum is a challenging problem in many geotechnical engineering applications, such as dams, strata under pavement, and foundations [4]. The field of soil mechanics in general, could be divided into a portion dealing with saturated soils and another dealing with unsaturated soils. Due to fundamental distinctions in their nature and engineering behavior, saturated and unsaturated soils must be distinguished from one another. In unsaturated soil, there are more than two phases, and the pore-water pressure is negative compared to the pore-air pressure. The main geotechnical problems connected to these soils are that when the soil gets wet, the pore pressure decreases, the effective stresses are concentrated, volume changes, and decreasing the soil's shear strength. Moreover, water can soften the soil particles' bonds, enabling denser packing. Negative pore-water pressures and ability desaturation could be influenced any soil near the ground surface that is present in a dry environment. The processes of remoulding, excavating, and recompacting soil also produce unsaturated material. These materials comprise a significant proportion of soils that are typically challenging to analyze within the framework of traditional soil mechanics. [5]. Suctions in unsaturated soils may vary greatly (from zero to 10 6 kPa), as a result of reactions to imposed weather conditions. If the suction pressure is considered, it is possible to understand better the engineering behavior of soils within an unsaturated state [6]. Ankara, Akköprü' deki inceleme ve örnekleme çalışması ile köprüye ait taş ve harç örnekleri üzerinde arkeometrik çalışmalar gerçekleştirilmiştir. Taşların bünyesinde bulunan suda çözünen tuzlar, spot tuz testleri ve kondaktometrik analiz ile elde edilmiştir. Harçların agrega ve bağlayıcı içerikleri, asidik agrega/bağlayıcı, agrega granülometrisi, ince kesit optik mikroskop ve X-ışını toz kırınımı analizleri ile belirlenmiştir. Ayrıca taş örneklerin fiziksel özellikleri uygulanan fiziksel testler ile belirlenmiştir. Gerçekleştirilen çalışma ile Akköprü' de ağırlıklı olarak kullanılan yapı taşının andezit ve yanında ignimbirit ile dasit, özgün bağlayıcının da kireç harcı olduğu görülmüştür. Akköprü'ye ait çimento içerikli harçların yakın dönem müdahalelerini yansıttığı anlaşılmıştır. Petrografik çalışmaların ışığında özgün yapısal örneklerin hammadde kaynağı açısından yerel formasyonu yansıttığı görülmüştür. Bazı taş örneklerin yüksek tuz içerikleri ve duraysız fiziksel durumları onların farklı derecelerde bozulma sürecinde olduklarını göstermiştir.

This paper investigates the water volume changes in gypseous sand soils within the change in matric suction and under different stress levels. The present research aims to examine water entry into the soil with different matric suction under different levels of constant net normal stress (221, 442, and 885 kPa). The soil sample is collected from Al-Najaf city, Iraq. The main soil of the city is sand with different percentages of gypsum at different locations and depths. These experiments revealed a clear relationship between decreasing the matric suction (wetting)
and changing the gypseous soil structure, i.e., increasing the void ratio, and this behavior also depends on the net stress level. With the demolition of the voids under high-stress levels, there is a decrease in water volume change at zero matric suction (saturation). A comparison is made
between the predicted soil water characteristics curve (SWCC) for the soil with the investigated values. The results show a shifting, which may be due to the accuracy of the curve fitting or/and the effect of the loading and gypsum content. This new understanding should help improve
predictions of the impact of the load, gypsum content, and time.

Korumada amaç yapıların simgesel ve sanatsal değerleri ile birlikte fiziksel yapısını da muhafaza etmek ve sürdürülebilir olmalarını sağlamaktır. Bu bakışı yansıtan bir çalışma olarak Kütahya'nın tarihi kent merkezinde bulunan Ahırardı Cami, yapısal ve dekoratif malzemeleri arkeometrik açıdan incelenmiştir. 1876 yılında yapılan ve zaman içinde çeşitli müdahalelere uğrayan caminin farklı bölgelerinden örneklenen taş, tuğla, sıva, harç ve çini örneklere fiziksel, kimyasal ve petrografik analizler uygulanmıştır. Arkeometrik çalışmalar kapsamında taş ve tuğla örneklerin fiziksel özellikleri temel fiziksel testlerle, aynı örneklerin suda çözünen tuz miktarı ile tuz (anyon) türleri de kondaktometrik analiz ile belirlenmiştir. Harç ve sıvalarda agrega/bağlayıcı ve agregada tane boyutu dağılımı (granülometrik) analizi uygulanmıştır. Yapısal örneklerin tümünün petrografik özellikleri, ince kesitleri üzerinden optik mikroskop analizi ile belirlenmiştir. Caminin yapımında kullanılan taşlar yoğunlukla ignimbirit kayaç türündedir. Taşlarda olduğu gibi tuğla örneklerin petrografik analizleri de volkanik kökenli yapıya sahip olduklarını göstermiştir. Agrega/bağlayıcı bileşimleri incelenen harç örnekler 2, sıva örnekler de 3 grup altında sınıflandırılmıştır. Tümü onarım örneği olan harç ve sıvaların bağlayıcı içeriğini çimento/kül, kil/kül karışımı bağlayıcıların oluşturduğu belirlenmiştir. Agrega/bağlayıcı içerikleri oldukça benzeşen onarım harç ve sıva örnekleri yakın dönem onarımlarını yansıtmaktadır ve caminin özgün harç ve sıvaları bu süreçlerde yok olmuş durumdadır.

Gypseous soil is one of the most problematic types of collapsible soils which is affected by many geotechnical factors. The most important factors are the effect of loading and wetting and their relation to soil density, especially when the soil at unsaturation condition. Suction pressure is the main criteria in determining the deformation behaviour of unsaturated collapsible soil when these soils distributed in arid or semi-arid region. In this study, disturbed sample of sandy soil of more than 70% gypsum content is taken from Al-Ramadi city western of Iraq. The task of characterizing an unsaturated soil is a very hard one, unlike the classics hypothesis like 100% of saturation are not considerable now. This work focuses on obtaining and simulating the soil-water characteristic curve for unsaturated soils from: Sagua la Grande, Formation Capdevila, Cienfuegos and Mariel, located in four provinces of Cuba. The estimation of the characteristic soil has different purposes that can be used to obtain various parameters which are important in the description of unsaturated soils. The permeability, shear strength and volumetric behavior are soil properties that are affected by the suction variation. For each soil case study, the characteristic curve is obtained using the filter paper test laboratory. The simulation is performed through Van Genuchten, Fredlund & Xing, and Gallipoli methods, that are empirical models and the curve is hyperbolic shaped. The statistical analysis helped to determine which of the models fit the properties of soils described by the experimental values.

This paper presents the results of laboratory experiments on the effect of matric suction on the compressibility of unsaturated gypsum sand soil under various types of loading. The soil samples were obtained from Al-Najaf city in Iraq with gypsum contents of 14 %, 22 % and 29 %. A wetting-process tests were conducted in a modified triaxial cell on these soil. This procedure likes when a structure has been constructed and the degree of saturation of a foundation soil is increased (decreasing in matric suction). Four matric suctions were adopted; 100, 60, 30 and zero percentages of initial matric suction under two different mean net stresses; 100 kPa and 200 kPa. The changes in the degree of saturation may be due to rainfall, water table rising and/or leaking of sewage and water pipes. The results from this path revealed that the volumetric strains are increased with decreasing of the matric suction and increasing of the gypsum content.

This research work studies the effect of the disturbance, & gypsum content on the behavior of soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC). Tests were conducted to determine SWCCs covering nearly the entire range of soil suction (0 - 106) kPa, for three soil samples selected from MOSUL city: Al-Jammia, (J), Al-Gabat, (G), & Al-Muhalabia, (M). The study also was carried out on soil G after the addition of (5, 10, 20 )% of gypsum content.
Results indicated that the shape mode of SWCC remained the same for all the studied cases with the occurrence of a change including an increase in the water holding capacity & air entry value due to disturbance & gypsum content. A mathematical model for SWCC was found for all studied cases using (Fredlund & Xing, 1994) equation Model, with aid of FORTRAN program, the parameters of mathematical model were analyzed statistically, the values of R2 ranged from (0.9946 - 0.99989), SSR(0.1876 – 6.8641).

Bu proje kapsamında yeralan Er Rızk Camii Minaresi de yeni Hasankeyf yerleşiminde oluşturulan arkeopark alanındaki yeni yerine bütünüyle taşınanarak baraj gölü suları altında kalma tehdidinden kurtarılmıştır. Er Rızk Camii Minaresi taşıma çalışmaları kapsamında farklı seviyelerinden elde edilen taş ve derz/moloz dolgu harç örnekleri, çeşitli analitik metotlar kullanılarak arkeometrik yönden incelenmiştir. Er Rızk Camii Minaresi'ne ait taş ve harç örnekler öncelikle görsel olarak değerlendirildikten sonra fotoğraflanarak belgelenmiş ve kodlanmıştır. Arkeometrik çalışmalar kapsamında taş ve harç örneklerin fiziksel özellikleri temel fiziksel testlerle (birim hacim ağırlığı, su tutma kapasitesi ve gözeneklilikleri), suda çözünen tuz miktarı ile pH değerleri de kondaktometrik analiz ile belirlenmiştir. Harç örneklere, agrega/bağlayıcı ve agregada tane boyutu dağılımı (granülometrik) analizi uygulanmıştır. Örneklerin petrografik özellikleri, ince kesitleri hazırlanıp optik mikroskop analizi ile, kimyasal özelikleri de PED-XRF analizi ile belirlenmiştir.
