Szene eins: Eine Frau geht auf die Straße. Sie verlässt das Haus. Sie bringt Kinder zur Schule. Sie geht zu ihrem Arbeitsplatz Das ist ihr Alltag. Szene zwei: Eine Frau geht auf die Straße. Es ist Abend. Sie wird belästigt. Sie muss sich zur Wehr setzen. Der öffentliche Rat, der ihr unaufgefordert erteilt wird, lautet, sie solle doch die Straßenseite wechseln, wenn sie betrunkene Männer auf sich zukommen sieht. Szene drei: Eine Frau geht auf die Straße. Die Straße ist ihr Arbeitsort. Hier findet sie ihre Kunden. Szene vier: Eine Frau geht auf die Straße. Sie verlässt das Haus. Sie ist auf dem Weg zu einem Protestmarsch. Sie kämpft für die Rechte von Frauen. In jeder dieser vier Szenen erfahren wir, dass eine Frau auf die Straße gegangen ist. In jeder dieser vier Szenen bedeutet dies etwas anderes. Auf die Straße gehen Sich in Bewegung setzen. Das Haus verlassen. Aufbrechen. Weitergehen. Je nachdem, wie ein Text, in dem diese Sätze vorkommen fortgesetzt wird, können diese Sätze höchst Unterschiedliches berichten. Diese Mehrdeutigkeit des Auf-die-Straße-Gehens, dieser enge Zusammenhang zwischen der Dimension des Alltäglichen und der Dimension des Politischen, es könnte ja dieselbe Frau sein, die zur Arbeit geht und die zur Versammlung geht, betrachte ich als Einladung, mehr noch als Aufforderung, die Aufmerksamkeit auf das Wissen und das Gehen zu lenken. Lässt sich von einem Wissen des Gehens sprechen? Wie lässt sich das Wissen des Gehens in Schritte der Forschung übersetzen? Welchen Auftrag für die Forschung erteilt uns der Akt des Auf-die-Straße-Gehens, der die Verhältnisse zwischen dem Alltag und der Politik auf der Ebene der Sprache in ein so enges sprachliches Verhältnis rückt? Wie könnte sich das Gehen mit dem Wissen über die Stadt verbinden? Was würden wir erfahren, was würden wir lernen, was würden wir wissen, wenn wir dem Gehen zuhören könnten, wenn wir die Schritte in Worte verwandeln könnten, um uns in die Geschichte der Körper, die sich in einer Stadt bewegen, die eine Stadt bewegen, hineinzuversetzen? There has been a significant decline in active travel and a massive increase in the use of car dependent travel in many countries during the past two decades. Evidential risks for people’s physical and mental health problems are correlated with this increased use of motorized travel. These health related problems range from overweight and obesity to increased air pollution. In response to these rising concerns health professionals, traffic planers, local authorities and others have introduced a variety of initiatives to counterbalance the dominance of cars for daily journeys.
However, the nature of travel behavior change interventions, which aim to reduce car use, are very complex and challenging regarding their interactions with human behavior. To change travel behavior at least two aspects have to be taken into consideration. First, how to alter attitudes and perceptions toward the sustainable and healthy modes of travel, in competition with experiences of private car use. And second, how to make these behavior change processes irreversible and sustainable. There are no comprehensive models available to guide policy interventions to increase the level of success of travel behavior change interventions across both these dimensions.
A comprehensive theoretical framework is required in the effort to optimize how to facilitate and guide the processes of data collection and analysis to achieve the best possible guidelines for policy makers. Regarding the gaps in the travel behavior change research literature, this paper attempted to identify and suggest a multidimensional framework in order to facilitate planning the implemented travel behavior change interventions. A structured mixed-method model is suggested to improve the analytic power of the results according to the complexity of human behavior.
In order to recognize people’s attitudes towards a specific travel mode, the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) was operationalized. But in order to capture decision making processes the Trans-theoretical model of Behavior Change (TTM) was also used. Consequently, the combination of these two theories (TTM and TPB) has resulted in a synthesis with appropriate concepts to identify and design an implemented travel behavior change interventions.

This is a syllabus of an introduction to the discipline of urban design whose goal is to provide students with the necessary skills to participate effectively in urban design studios and will include site, spatial and public domain analysis, map and plan reading, visual, verbal and written communication techniques, and basic computer-based three-dimensional modelling and numerical analysis. Students will be introduced to the objectives and principles of urban design by analysing a number of public spaces including the spaces between buildings as well as the public domain and urban conditions in Sydney.

Il contributo vuole proporre una riflessione sull’uso delle immagini fotografiche nella ricerca urbanistica e nella interpretazione/pianificazione del paesaggio, con particolare attenzione per l’uso sociale delle immagini fotografiche come strumento di conoscenza del territorio, di condivisione del sapere tra differenti attori sociali e, in ultima analisi, come strumento di progetto. Il testo, dopo una breve introduzione al tema, propone una metodologia che unisce ed integra differenti approcci di analisi visiva e pianificazione partecipata (PPVM, Partecipate Photo and Video Mapping): campagne fotografiche e video, tecniche di photo-elicitation – che integrate a sistemi di georeferenziazione (GPS) permettono il collegamento tra informazioni ed analisi di tipo qualitativo a dati quantitativi e località specifiche. Queste costituiscono lo scenario nel quale si inserisce l’esperienza didattica e di ricerca condotta, e presentata – anche se limitatamente all’uso e all’applicazione di alcuni degli approcci visivi sopra citati – dalla quale emergono alcuni elementi su cui ragionare sia in chiave didattica sia per ulteriori approfondimenti di ricerca.

During the past two decades, the Gulf countries have experienced the most rapid urban growth in the world. The traditional societies in this region have been guilelessly opened on the market economy and western lifestyle. In spite the progress realized at many levels, these societies became victims of its consumerist style. This article aims to present an overview of the urban development in Oman since it started its ‘modernization’. This study is not only interested in how the country has been developing since its “renaissance” in the 1970s, but also how does this development appear, compared to its traits in the neighboring Gulf countries. Based on the assumption that urban research is a tool of analysis that can enlighten future decisions and actions in the domain of urban development, this study is also a critical review of the published research about the urbanization in Oman since the 1970s. This research showed that, although it shares several aspects with what the other Gulf cities have witnessed, urbanization in Oman was slower, less drastic and relatively more controlled. The scrutiny of the published research on this topic also revealed that the urban studies about Oman, and the GCC countries in general, were insignificant before the rise of leading cities such as Dubai, then Doha, to the international scene. It concluded that even if these urban studies have progressively broadened in their topics, disciplines and case studies, their effect on the new orientations chosen for the future developments in these countries remains negligible.

Il volume restituisce gli esiti di un lungo percorso didattico e di ricerca al quale hanno contribuito docenti, collaboratori, tutor, studenti, associazioni, enti. In particolare il volume contiene gli studi, analisi e scenari degli studenti che hanno frequentato il Laboratorio di progettazione urbanistica 2 e il workshop a sua conclusione nell’anno accademico 2013-2014.

Hanno collaborato al Laboratorio e alla costruzione di questo libro: Maurizio Bonizzi, Valentina Crupi, Luca Del Fabbro Machado, Mirko Pellegrini, Sebastiano Roveroni, Nicola Vazzoler. Eva Barbari e Marta Tosone hanno collaborato al workshop e alla mostra conclusiva. Contemporaneamente l'architetto Roberto Franco, dell’Associazione culturale ETRA, ha partecipato all’organizzazione degli eventi che hanno contribuito a costruire e rendere pubblico questo percorso di ricerca.

Le diverse esperienze che hanno reso possibile questa pubblicazione sono state promosse grazie al sostegno del Dipartimento di Ingegneria e Architettura e del Corso di studi in Architettura dell’Università di Trieste, allora coordinato dal collega Sergio Pratali Maffei, e grazie alla proficua collaborazione con il Comune di Monfalcone e con l’Associazione culturale ETRA.


Esempio di città contemporanea, Monfalcone, con il suo territorio, ha offerto agli studenti del Laboratorio di Progettazione urbanistica del Corso di studi in Architettura dell’Università di Trieste l’opportunità di confrontarsi con questioni di rilevante interesse urbanistico, legate alle dinamiche insediative, ai cambiamenti delle popolazioni, alla coabitazione negli spazi pubblici, alle modificazioni del sistema produttivo, al ruolo delle infrastrutture, alla prossimità tra spazi urbanizzati e risorse ambientali e agricole. Il libro restituisce immagini, riflessioni e proposte progettuali emerse da un’esperienza didattica e di ricerca orientata a prefigurare scenari di trasformazione e sviluppo futuro per il Monfalconese.

Accanto ai lavori degli studenti alcuni testi di carattere più generale riportano i temi e le questioni emerse da letture e esplorazioni su questo contesto nell’ambito di una più ampia riflessione sugli strumenti di progetto e di governo per i territori contemporanei. Un percorso fotografico tra gli spazi pubblici di Monfalcone restituisce, da una diversa prospettiva, il racconto del quotidiano ricomporsi dei differenti modi di abitare la città. Nel loro insieme, le diverse parti del libro delineano un programma di lavoro aperto, teso a individuare ulteriori tracce e domande di ricerca che, anche attraverso fertili rapporti tra Università e territorio, possano costruire nuove visioni per città e società in evoluzione.

The starting point of this scoping report is that the rapid force of urbanisation is a powerful catalyst to advance all three aspects of a transition to sustainable development – social, economic and environmental – as set out in the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Develop- ment. The task of identifying catalytic actions, setting priorities is not simple, especially in poor and rapidly urbanizing regions. The multi-stakeholder process of addressing urbanization typically also requires devolu- tion and collaboration at all levels of the multilevel governance agenda – global, regional, national and local. The complex governance imperatives associated with urbanization and transformation for sustainable development necessitates new research and more effec- tive research-policy interaction.

Ce texte propose une critique pragmatiste de l’expérimentation dans la recherche urbaine, à partir du cas des urban living labs qui se sont multipliés récemment dans les métropoles européennes. Les auteurs partent d’une typologie des modes d’expérimentation pour privilégier un « expérimentalisme profond », associé au pragmatisme philosophique de Dewey et à la sociologie écologique de Park. Ils entreprennent alors un récit autocritique du Metrolab, un laboratoire de recherche urbaine, interdisciplinaire et appliquée, installé à Bruxelles. En examinant les pratiques d’expérimentation qui en ont jalonné l’expérience, ils rendent compte
de certaines situations problématiques, à différentes phases du projet, qui ont entravé l’enquête et éloigné les chercheurs de leur ligne pragmatiste. À la lumière de ce parcours fait de revers, qui illustre les difficultés d’une application pratique de l’expérimentalisme deweyen,
les auteurs concluent par l’esquisse d’une critique expérimentale du pragmatisme. Ils visent ici en particulier une rhétorique de l’action présente chez Dewey, et amplifiée par certains commentaires, qui conçoit sur un mode majeur tant les situations problématiques soumises à l’enquête, que ses possibles effets pratiques. À distance de ce pragmatisme héroïque, les auteurs défendent un pragmatisme modeste, dont l’enquête s’accommode du caractère parfois mineur des troubles qui la suscitent
et du caractère indirect, différé et imprévisible de ses conséquences pratiques.

Oluşumu Türkiye'nin kırdan kente olan yoğun göçün başlangıç yılları olan 1950'lerde başlayan Ankara'nın Tuzluçayır Mahallesi'nin, bu yıllardan günümüze (2014) kadar olan dönüşümünü ele alan bir çalışma. Tuzluçayır özellikle 1970'lerde Türkiye'nin geneline hakim olan politik atmosferin de etkisiyle hızlı bir biçimde politize olacak ve bu nedenle dışarıda "Küçük Moskova" adıyla anılacaktır. Bir yandan Sol- Sosyalist mücadele tarihinin Küçük Moskovası diğer yandan ise "mimli", "tehlikeli" bir mahalle olarak görülen Tuzluçayır'ın her iki anlamda da yaşamış olduğu sorunlar, değişim ve dönüşümler 80 Darbesi, Gezi Direnişi, Cami-Cemevi olayları gibi dönemsel olaylarla beslenerek ele alınmıştır.

Come può un modulo formativo, sviluppato nell'ambito dei percorsi in continuità e alternanza tra scuola e università, offrire l'opportunità per sperimentare nuovi modi per trasmettere conoscenze sulla città e sulla sua trasformazione? È questa la domanda che nel 2017 ha guidato le docenti di progettazione urbanistica del corso di studi in Architettura del Dipartimento di Ingegneria e Architettura dell'Università degli Studi di Trieste nell'organizzazione di "Esperienze urbane. Come esplorare e progettare gli spazi pubblici nelle periferie della città contemporanea". Il breve percorso didattico compiuto con alcuni studenti delle scuole superiori di Trieste, Udine, Gorizia e Monfalcone, supportati da loro giovani colleghi del corso di studi in Architettura, si è configurato come un processo di apprendimento fondato sul fare esperienza dello e nello spazio urbano. Lavorando all'interno di un quartiere di edilizia pubblica di Trieste, Borgo San Sergio, e mettendo in campo diversi approcci e punti di vista (dell'urbanista, dell'etnografo, dell'artista), per una settimana ci siamo interrogati su significati, forme e possibilità di riqualificazione degli spazi aperti pubblici. Ripetuti sopralluoghi, momenti di discussione e di rielaborazione critica hanno scandito le attività del modulo formativo, i cui esiti sono illustrati in questo volume. L'auspicio è che il nostro racconto possa essere utile a nuove esperienze, fornendo stimoli anche a chi insegna nelle scuole, a supporto di iniziative future sempre più integrate nei contesti e improntate alla collaborazione tra discipline, istituzioni educative, persone e attori territoriali.

When Henri Lefebvre published The Urban Revolution in 1970, he sketched a research itinerary on the emerging tendency towards planetary urbanization. Today, when this tendency has become reality, Lefebvre’s ideas on everyday life, production of space, rhythmanalysis and the right to the city are indispensable for the understanding of urbanization processes at every scale of social practice. This volume is the first to develop Lefebvre’s concepts in social research and architecture by focusing on urban conjunctures in Barcelona, Belgrade, Berlin, Budapest, Copenhagen, Dhaka, Hong Kong, London, New Orleans, Nowa Huta, Paris, Toronto, São Paulo, Sarajevo, as well as in Mexico and Switzerland. With contributions by historians and theorists of architecture and urbanism, geographers, sociologists, political and cultural scientists, Urban Revolution Now reveals the multiplicity of processes of urbanization and the variety of their patterns and actors around the globe.

This article discusses the crucial role of blogs in reporting topical materials yet to be adequately discussed in scholarly journals. A scoping study examined 31 samples from 4 types of blogging sources cited in 10 publications published in 7 journals in 2020. We identi ed four categories of blogs that include 39 community organisations, academics, practitioners, and community members who are readers of these blogs. We discuss the areas in which these blogs have a ected public discourse over COVID-19. We also show that the blogs are based on novel concepts that have not yet been subject to the peer review process.

Paint. Buff. Shoot. Repeat is a photographic project that zooms in on the
location and lifespan of street art and graffiti in the urban environment. It is a response to online image banks that often capture street art and graffiti with a focus on the image rather than its setting and arrange photo archives by artist, style or production medium. In opposition, this project uses the method of repeat photography to capture the transformative processes street art and graffiti go through and argues for the capacity of this method to reveal changes on city surfaces.

De ce trebuie să implementăm astăzi planuri urbanistice „expirate”, vechi de 60-70 de ani? Această contribuție va analiza politicile de planificare urbană din Chișinău implementate de administrația neo-liberală orașului după 1992 și impactul politicilor de privatizare ale sferei publice. Un alt aspect important este expunerea tendințelor de gentrificare din contextul politicilor neo-liberale din ultimul deceniu și impactul pe care acestea l-au avut asupra centrului orașului. Care ar putea fi alternativa la Bulevardul D. Cantemir? Definirea unui plan de acțiune preliminar adresat activiștilor societății civile pentru apărarea și protejarea zonei vechi a orașului și a locuitorilor acestuia.

Originally set off by sharp spikes in food prices, public displays of indignation toward governments around the world come to address social and political issues that are much broader than just the cost of basic necessities, and have, in the meantime, evolved to incorporate in their rallying calls the equally pressing demands for democracy, social justice and freedom. A look into the effects of Cairo's urbanisation on its food production.

Seit Anfang der 1980er Jahre setzt sich der in Straßburg lebende Philosoph Jean-Luc Nancy mit Fragen des Politischen und der Gemeinschaft, mit dem Mitsein und dem Zusammensein mit Anderen auseinander. Er lehnte es jedoch stets ab, seine Beiträge zum gemeinschaftlichen Sein als Arbeiten einer Politischen Philosophie zu verstehen. Anknüpfungspunkt war ihm auch nicht das, was gemeinhin als traditionelle Politische Philosophie verstanden wird, sondern es waren Autoren wie Heidegger, Schmitt, Bataille und Blanchot, mit denen er sich beschäftigte, um eine Ontologie des Mitseins zu schreiben.
Am Rande dieser Auseinandersetzung mit dem Mitsein, stellte sich Jean-Luc Nancy in einigen kleinen Vorträgen die Frage, was heute und vor allem morgen die Stadt (die Polis), der Ort der Politeia, sein kann.
Während die Politische Philosophie, aber auch die Phänomenologie und die heideggersche Fundamentalontologie, die Polis als einen Ort der Sicherheit, des Schutzes, der Geborgenheit oder des Wohnens beschreiben, so lässt Jean-Luc Nancy diese Begriffe fallen und wendet sich den Strukturen der Stadt zu, aus denen sie sich entwickelt hat und in die sie verschwinden wird. Jean-Luc Nancy beschreibt die Stadt weder als ein Wohn- oder Arbeitsraum, noch als ein Schutzraum. Mit der Urbanisierung der Welt, sobald alles urban wird, tritt die Stadt der Bürger und des Bürgertums ab, und wird zu einer ununterbrochenen Baustelle neuer Verbindungswege, Trassen, Verknotung und Verkettungen.

This presentation was developed in collaboration with Yani Vozos for a graduate course on Housing Development in the Urban Planning program at the University of Louisville.  An analysis of preexisting conditions of Louisville's historic Portland neighborhood is presented, alongside fiscal strategies, political tools and social resources for the preservation and revitalization of the residential housing stock. The authors recommend establishing an "artist relocation program" based on successes and lessons learned from a case-study example of a similar program called the Paducah Artist Relocation Program, which is also based in Kentucky.

"No hay otro conocer urbano que la acción de la ciudadanía". Casi bastaría con replicar el contundente título que Mariano Vázquez Espí le puso a su magnífica ponencia del año 2002103 para sintetizar el contenido de la siguiente reflexión, pues dicho título constituye en sí mismo un programa y una declaración de intenciones que suscribo en su totalidad. En su comunicación, Vázquez Espí partía de una reflexión epistemológica ("queremos conocer cómo es que conocemos") para pasar a plantearse los "límites de la técnica" ante el dilema de la toma de decisiones en el marco de una realidad intrínsecamente multidimensional en la que la obtención de soluciones "viables" es matemáticamente posible (mediante optimación vectorial), pero no lo es la selección entre todas las soluciones obtenidas, pues, como él planteaba: "¿quién escoge? ¿el técnico? ¿el azar? ¿hay diferencia?". Tras abordar el carácter "polivalente" del "sujeto de la ciudad", y hacer hincapié en la necesidad de "perder el miedo al conflicto", la exposición culminaba con un alegato a favor de una democracia participativa que ayudase a "que los nuevos sujetos sociales acaben por construir su decisión colectiva".

Half of humanity lives in towns and cities and that proportion is expected to increase in the coming decades. Society, both Western and non-Western, is fast becoming urban and mega-urban as existing cities and a growing number of smaller towns are set on a path of demographic and spatial expansion. Given the disciplinary commitment to an empirically-based analysis, anthropology has a unique contribution to make to our understanding of our evolving urban world. It is in such a belief that we have established the Palgrave Studies in Urban Anthropology series. In the awareness of the unique contribution that ethnography offers for a better theoretical and practical grasp of our rapidly changing and increasingly complex cities, the series will seek high-quality contributions from anthropologists and other social scientists, such as geographers, political scientists, sociologists and others, engaged in empirical research in diverse ethnographic settings. Proposed topics should set the agenda concerning new debates and chart new theoretical directions, encouraging reflection on the significance of the anthropological paradigm in urban research and its centrality to mainstream academic debates and to society more broadly. The series aims to promote critical scholarship in international anthropology. Volumes published in the series should address theoretical and methodological issues, showing the relevance of ethnographic research in understanding the socio-cultural, demographic, economic and geo-political changes of contemporary society.

I was honored to be part of a special by-invitation-only conference organized by the Social Science Research Council [SSRC] in Brooklyn on “The Decent City.”  Many of us were puzzled by the title, which felt simultaneously vague and not aspirational enough.  Ira Katznelson, President of the SSRC explained it thusly:  “The term is meant to imply a site of reflection, research, and policy in a zone between more utopian reflections on the one side, and highly-focused instrumental policy considerations on the other.  Substantively, it connotes cities in which built environments and the organization of space diminish and soften various dimensions of inequality and promote relations among diverse populations that are neighborly.”

This interview is part of the PhD thesis “The Paradigm of Complexity in Architectural and Urban Design" (Jon Arteta, Universidad de Alcalá, Madrid, 2017).

Urban transport and urban sustainability is now a major concern in today’s world. All the major cities around the world are trying to be more sustainable. With the passage of time the population increases and also the demand for public transport has been increased, which results in growth of automotive vehicles in Kolkata city which directly influences negative externalities of transport. Kolkata city is one of the cities in India which experiences rapid growth of automobile vehicles. The objective of this article is to find out the problems of Kolkata city because of the enormous growth of automobile vehicles. Side by side effort has been done to find out few strategies to minimize the problem. To find out the problems of Kolkata city remote sensing method and statistical techniques have been used. This study reveals that growth of automobile vehicles leads to increase in the temperature of Kolkata city, increased rate of pollution, creates traffic congestion etc.  Few policies like taxation, subsidies on public transport and increase in price in private vehicles can be applied to regulate the growth of automobile vehicles in Kolkata city. This type of study is very much helpful for the transport planning and management of an area. The techniques used in this study can also be applied in the other areas also. This research will throw a new light on the future research regarding transportation research and development.

“Re-imagining Cities,” a joint exhibition by the City Form Lab of the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) and the Urban Design Module of the Future Cities Laboratory (FCL) Singapore-ETH Centre (SEC), highlights the importance of academic engagement and international knowhow to the planning of Singapore.

The Future Cities Laboratory from the Singapore-ETH Centre showcases the analyses and proposals on the three sites of Farrer Park, Lavender and Ophir-Rochor in the Rochor+ area of Singapore as well as zooms into a specific urban public space typology in The Backlanes project. The projects touch on timely topics such as gentrification, HDB reuse, and densification as well as migrant public space, pedestrian and traffic flows. The urban potentials garnered from specificities of the urban sites and typologies are employed to enhance the qualitative development of high density living in the increasingly globalized and rapidly changing Singapore.

With more than 60% of the world population living in urban areas, cities are becoming at the centre of attention in academic institutions and government organizations. However, there appears to be a continuous fragmentation in the types of knowledge developed where issues or concerns are always addressed in isolation and many factors critical to a comprehensive understanding of cities towards creating better urban environments are oversimplified at best or ignored at worst. Therefore, the thrust of this paper is to demonstrate the thought processes involved in instigating frameworks, raising questions, and establishing objectives for responsive city research. It aims to present two triadic agendas that untangle the essential components of city research; the first is the Lefebvrian triadic conception on the production of space and the second is the triadic perspective of lifestyles theories for understanding housing developments, typologies, and choices. Contextually, while the theoretical underpinnings of these agendas are developed based on a body of knowledge generated in the context of the Western world, their conceptualisation is adapted to grasp and examine key unique particularities of selected emerging (and globalised) Arab cities in the Gulf region. Calling for the need for a trans-disciplinary thinking paradigm for city research, the two agendas adopt an integrationist approach that is amenable to understanding the urban realities of these cities.

o p e n i n g t h o u g h t s The silver sedan screeched to a stop inches before me as I dashed across the well-marked crosswalk. After catching my breath and turning to catch a glimpse of the Portuguese driver who had nearly killed me, I remembered the word for " run over " —atropelar—which I had just looked up yesterday, after seeing it mentioned numerous times in the local newspaper. Suddenly a series of stories I'd barely glanced at the past week made sense, and I made a mental note to pay more attention to what I now suspected might become a theme in my stay in this city—and that, I worried, might even be a theme endemic to the Portuguese psyche. After twenty-fi ve-plus years living among, working with, and writing about the Beng, a small, rural, " animist " community in the rain forest of Côte d'Ivoire, I recently began research in a radically diff erent space—the Euro-pean capital city of Lisbon—as the jumping-off point for a new research project with Cape Verdeans, a deeply diasporic population dispersed across Africa, Europe, and the Americas. Some anthropologists move easily from one fi eldsite to another; that was not my profi le. Loyalty had kept me attached to the Beng long after the point when I could visit them safely, and a good decade of indecision had kept me from committing to a new fi eldsite. My hesitations had both scholarly and personal foundations. In this chapter, I use my own case to think through broader trends and themes that characterize our disciplinary expectations for the model professional career.

This issue marks the beginning of a new year for Archnet-IJAR. A considerable effort has been put to position the journal among other distinguished journals in the field. After a year, the three issues included in the first volume accommodated 23 research paper and 14 reviews and trigger articles. While research papers  are  refereed  by  the  independent panel  of  reviewers  who  are  well  versed  in their areas of specialization and expertise, the reviews and trigger articles are reviewed by the editor based on relevance and the targeted reader. As a result of this effort and the rigorous review process, Archnet-IJAR is now standing among the leading periodicals in architecture, planning,  and  built  environment  studies.  This is reflected in the recognition the journal has received over the past year.

What was a pleasing news piece I received this year is a message responding to my request of including Archnet-IJAR in the Avery Index of Architectural Periodical at Columbia University, United States. After conducting the necessary reviews Mr. Ted Goodman, the general editor of  Avery  Index  mentioned:  I  am  happy  to say that we will add your journal to the Avery Index. It fits in perfectly with our strategic goals of increasing global coverage and indexing online journals.” Starting from January 2008, Archnet-IJAR became part of the Avery Index of  Architectural  Periodicals,  and  is  aspiring to be part of other indexing.....

……I now return to where I began; the efforts undertaken to establish Archnet-IJAR over the past year resulted in attracting both a large body of readers while distinguished professors and scholars started to contribute their work. In this issue, a considerable number of giants in the fields of architecture and human environment interaction offer their thoughts and words of wisdom out of decades of experience in teaching and research. There are great contributions from authorities such as Amos Rapoport; Henry Sanoff; Jack Nasar; Nikos A. Salingaros and Kenneth G. Masden
II; Roderick Lawrence; Wolfgang Preiser; and Xinhao Wang. High quality contributions from younger committed scholars include those of Ceridwen Owen; Ashraf M. Salama; Yasser Mahgoub; Magda Moustafa; and M. Salim Ferwati and M. Alaa Mandour. Metaphorically, one can argue that in this edition of Archnet-IJAR different generations meet to reflect on their experience, interests, and concerns. Amos Rapoport offers some further notes on culture-environment relations based on four decades of exploring and synthesizing ideas from different fields toward a more responsive interpretation of culture as it relates to the everyday physical environment. Referring to his latest book: Culture, Architecture, and Design (2005) as his “last word” on the subject, Rapoport relates some of the concepts……

This paper aims to reveal the impact of film festivals as powerful political weapons today, challenging the conservative and neo-liberal ideologies. The reason behind this challenge is the availability of films from around the world, the multiplicity of events and protests attached to the film festivals and their ability to create collectivity and solidarity. My film festival ethnography during the Istanbul Film Festival shows that the rise of the
Islamist/neo-liberal ideology and the policies of the current government in Turkey, especially related to the urban structure and movie theatres, initiated wide-ranging political activism from the public, including the Istanbul Film Festival audience. From 2010 onwards, the Istanbul Film Festival audience started to take political action and created social protests against the demolition of the Emek movie theatre, which was one of the last remaining large format movie theatres in Istanbul. This audience also participated in the much larger uprising of the Occupy Gezi Park. The political activism of the Istanbul Film Festival audience transformed their engagement with the film festival. In this research, film festivals are discussed as sites of resistance but also parts of the capitalist market economy.

Shanghai continues to encounter the stresses and opportunities of a rapidly urbanizing country – even as urban planning has changed from being a high socialist provider of social goods and welfare to a supporter of China’s expansion through the new “reform and opening up” market economy. In this course, we will explore the economic, political, and cultural roles of cities, with a special focus on Shanghai. In order to understand Shanghai in a theoretical context, two sets of readings will be introduced for each topic: classic writings in the field of urban studies/planning/sociology, and writings specific to Shanghai. This theoretical context will be heavily supplemented by a series of hands-on field trips.

Taking full advantage of Shanghai as our laboratory (and nice summer weather), at least seven field trips will be organized as part of this course. Students are expected to have read the required reading before embarking on each field trip. With the context derived from the readings in mind, we will put what we see in context and discuss our experiences in the field in conjunction with the readings at the end of each field trip, usually at the location of the field trip itself. Each student will be required to keep a journal, take photos, record videos, and keep track of places that they visit. A customized pocket map of Shanghai will be ordered for each student to fit each student’s needs. At the end of each visit, students will write a 1-2 page summary of their experience in conjunction with the readings and share with the class in a class blog, which will be counted toward the final grade of the course.

The goal of this course is to introduce students to urban studies and planning – a broadly defined field of interdisciplinary study – as well as to help students develop their critical observation, analysis, and thinking skills regarding the urban environment. This course will introduce students to key concepts in architecture, urban planning, and development through deep experiential, sensory, and historical study and engagement with Shanghai as a place, space, and urbanity. In addition to taking full advantage of Shanghai as our laboratory for the said purpose, emerging out of a process of enquiry and discussion about the city, this course will engage students with critical thinking, constructive debates, and exploratory writing, on various platforms; all of which will serve as the foundation on which the course’s evaluation will be based.

Cities have always been arenas of social and symbolic conflict. As places of encounter between different classes, ethnic groups, and lifestyles, cities play the role of powerful integrators; yet on the other hand urban contexts are the ideal setting for marginalization and violence. The struggle over control of urban spaces is an ambivalent mode of sociation: while producing themselves, groups produce exclusive spaces and then, in turn, use the boundaries they have created to define themselves. This volume presents major urban conflicts and analyzes modes of negotiation against the theoretical background of postcolonialism.

Exploring the spatial coupling relationship between cultural relics and historic sites and their surroundings can provide reasonable suggestions for the layout and development of commercial facilities and hold crucial significance for improving the management and maintenance of cul-tural relics and historical sites, as well as enhancing their attractiveness to the public. We chose District III of Shaoxing City as the research area based on the point of interest and road network data. This study analyzed the scale and accessibility of cultural relics and historic sites (CRHSs) as well as their surrounding commercial facilities, and then objectively evaluated their spatial layout and coupling relationship by employing kernel density estimation, standard deviation el-lipse, network analysis, inverse distance weight and the spatial correlation analysis method. The results show that: (1) from the perspective of spatial layout, the distribution of CRHSs has a posi-tive and strong correlation with the distribution of road networks; (2) there are noticeable varia-tions in the number of industrial facilities surrounding various CRHSs, closely related to the pro-tection grade of CRHSs; (3) the accessibility of commercial facilities surrounding CRHS varies significantly—commercial facilities surrounding CRHSs located within central District III of Shaoxing City have good accessibility, whereas those of the peripheral areas have comparatively poor accessibility; and (4) the accessibility of commercial facilities surrounding CRHSs in differ-ent administrative districts varies, showing an extremely uneven pattern.

“Trakiya” is a typical plattenbau residential neighbourhood, planned and executed during the 1970s and 1980s. Built in accordance with the modernist urban planning principles and the social engineering approach, nowadays it houses more than 60 000 people. During the past 25 years it has undergone a major transformation from an avoided notorious districts into one of the most preferred neighbourhoods to live in, attractive with its vast green spaces, good transport, health and social infrastructure and pleasant urban microclimate.
The aim of the paper is to explore this transformation into district preferred for raising children, and to provide an in-depth look at the interrelations of the developed medical infrastructure, local socio-cultural practices of its inhabitants and the way of creating healthy and vivid urban environment.
The information was gathered as a part of a large-scale interdisciplinary study, conducted from February until October 2016 for One Architecture Week festival. The author has developed a special research methodology. It included field surveys, desk research, quasi-representative sociological survey of 477 people, meetings with residents of the neighbourhood and representatives of the local Municipal administration, maps and schemes production. Among the studied more than 40 urban environment elements and sub-systems were the green spaces, sports facilities, medical infrastructure, social practices and demographic profile, schools and kindergartens, etc.
The results showed that the local communities are the key-players in turning the notorious area into vivid and healthy district. Today Trakiya is attractive for young families to raise their children for its numerous of medical and social services, multiple kindergartens, schools, playgrounds, parks, and open-airs sports facilities. Among the drawn conclusions are the strong and weak sides, the threads and the potential for developing sustainable community and healthy urban environment, and the potential to address global issues by good local examples.
