Geleiras tropicais são sensíveis às mudanças climáticas, o que reflete em alterações na área de acumulação de neve (ACN). Este artigo objetivou elaborar um código livre de processamento de imagens para identificação da ACN para a série Landsat na Cordillera Blanca, Perú entre 1988-2023. Realizou-se a classificação automática através de índices espectrais e filtragens morfológicas pelo método Otsu para identificação da ACN. Validou-se os resultados através do mapeamento manual em imagens Landsat e Planet Scope. Os valores de correlação linear entre o método automático e manual foram ≥0,69. As diferenças entre as imagens Landsat e Planet para geleiras com morfologia bem definida foram <5%. Identificamos menores valores de ACN para o período de 1988-99, um aumento de 2000-09 e uma nova diminuição de 2010-2022 o que corresponde as taxas de retração de área total observadas, os anos de menores valores de ACN corresponderam aos eventos de El Niño.

Este estudo avaliou por técnicas de sensoriamento remoto, a cobertura de gelo nos Andes Bolianos em uma área piloto (cordilheira Três Cruces, localizada entre 67º22'-67º32'W e 16º47'-16º09'S). Foram examinadas as antigas posições frontais de algumas geleiras dessa cordilheira, pela análise de imagens satelitais, dados cartográficos, e pelo cálculo de mudança na espessura do gelo (diferenças de volume e elevação). O monitoramento foi efetuado entre os anos de 1975 e 2004 (29 anos) nas geleiras: Jankho Loma, San Enrique, Laramkkota, Malla Chuma, Campanani, Jacha Pacuni e c5250. No geral, a partir de 1975, as frentes das geleiras diminuíram em todas as direções, as retrações máximas e mínimas das frentes de gelo foram de 437 m (Laramkkota) e 181 m (San Enrique). O recuo médio das sete geleiras estudadas foi de aproximadamente 12m a-1. Nas áreas cobertas por gelo na cordilheira, em média, ocorreu uma redução de 18% em 29 anos, ou seja, aproximadamente-0,009 km 2 a-1. Neste período a geleira c5250 foi a que teve a maior perda relativa (cerca de 50% de sua área). Por outro lado, a geleira Campanani, de maior superfície, foi a que perdeu proporcionalmente menor área (6% do total). A análise dos modelos digitais de elevação indicou redução geral no volume de gelo durante o período, apresentando uma perda média de aproximadamente 1,55 m equivalente água a-1. A retração das massas glaciais da cordilheira Tres Cruces é consistente com o aquecimento atmosférico regional e com a redução generalizada das geleiras nos Trópicos.

Monitoring precipitation in mountainous areas using traditional tipping-bucket rain gauges (TPB) has become challenging in sites with strong variations of air temperature and wind speed (Ws). The drop size distributions (DSD), amount, and precipitation-type of a Parsivel OTT2 disdrometer installed at 4730 m above sea level (close to the 0 °C isotherm) in the glacier foreland of the Antisana volcano in Ecuador are used to analyze the precipitation type. To correct the DSDs, we removed spurious particles and shifted fall velocities such that the mean value matches with the fall velocity–diameter relationship of rain, snow, graupel, and hail. In this paper, we reanalyze the glacier mass balance on Glaciar Antisana 15α over the 1995-2012 period. Annual glacier mass balances were quantified on the basis of monthly glaciological measurements using an adaptation of Lliboutry's statistical approach. The geodetic mass balance was computed between 1997 and 2009 giving a cumulative balance of −1.39 ± 1.97 m w.e. and a slightly negative adjusted annual glaciological mass balance (−0.12 ± 0.16 m w.e. a −1). Despite a careful analysis of uncertainties, we found a large discrepancy between the cumulative glaciological and the geodetic mass balances over the common period, of 4.66 m w.e. This discrepancy can mainly be explained by underestimated net accumulation in the glacier upper reaches, which could be due to the peculiar climate conditions of the equatorial zone with year round accumulation, thereby preventing clear identification of annual layers. An increase of ∼70% in measured rates of net accumulation would be needed to balance the glaciological and geodetic mass balances; a hypothesis confirmed by estimated ice flux in the vicinity of the ELA. Consequently, the vertical gradient of precipitation may be higher than previously estimated and the accumulation processes (including the role of frost deposition) need to be carefully analyzed.

This IIED published research address the issue on the effects of climate change on glacier melting and on the hydrology of the La Paz Valley. It extensively describes the possible impact of climate change on water resources in the metropolitan area of La Paz and El Alto, and thus on water provision for urban domestic uses. Eighty per cent of the glaciers in the Bolivian tropical Andes are melting, much has already disappeared and the Tuni-Condoriri system, important for water provision in the cities of La Paz and El Alto will disappear towards 2025 and 2045. These studies also provide information related to the water balance (precipitation, consumption, water losses) in the water systems of La Paz and El Alto.
