"ABSTRACT:
    This study assumes the subject's pursuit of meaning is generally incapacitating and should be suspended. It aims to demonstrate how such a suspension is theoretically accomplished by utilizing Lacan's formulae of sexuation integrated with his work in discourse theory and topology.
    Part I places this study into context by examining scholarship from the established fields of hermeneutics, phenomenology, (post)structuralism, aesthetic theory and psychoanalysis in order to extract out their respective theory of meaning. These theories reveal that an historical struggle with meaning has been underway since the Reformation and reaches near crisis proportions in the 20th century. On the one hand this crisis is mollified by the rise of Heideggerian-Gadamerian hermeneutical phenomenology which questions traditional epistemological approaches to the text using a new ontological conceptualization of meaning and a conscious rejection of methodology. On the other hand this crisis is exacerbated when the ubiquitous nature of meaning is itself challenged by (post)structuralism's discovery of the signifier which inscribes a limit to meaning, and by the domains of sense and nonsense newly opened up by aesthetic theory. These historical developments culminate in the field of psychoanalysis which most consequentially delimits a cause of meaning said to be closely linked to the core of subjectivity.
    Part II extends these findings by rigorously constructing out of the Lacanian sexuated formulae a decidedly non-hermeneutical phenomenological approach useful in demonstrating the sexual nature of meaning. Explicated in their static state by way of an account of their original derivation from the Aristotelian logical square, it is argued that these four formulae are relevant to basic concerns of textual theory inclusive of the hermeneutical circle of meaning. These formulae are then set into motion by integrating them with Lacan's four discourses to demonstrate the breakdown of meaning. Finally, the cuts and sutures of two-dimensional space that is topology as set down in L'étourdit are performed to confirm how the very field of meaning is ultimately suspended from a nonsensical singular point known in Lacanian psychoanalysis as objet a. The contention is that by occupying this point the subject frees himself from the debilitating grip of meaning."

Une contribution de Jean-François Jeandillou était attendue, elle n'est
hélas jamais parvenue à la rédaction. Certains esprits facétieux ne
manqueront pas d'en déceler quelque trace improbable dans le présent numéro,
où plus d'une signature sent son pseudonyme. Mais nous nous garderons bien de
cautionner pareille spéculation.

Le rapport entre texte et image est sans cesse réactivé par la recherche actuelle, car ce sont par les textes que l’on peut appréhender quelles étaient les manières de voir, de comprendre et d’utiliser l’image au moyen-âge. Les relations intellectuelles qu’entretiennent avec l’image, artisans et spectateurs  ne peuvent qu’être perçues à travers la compréhension des représentations dont les écrits témoignent. Une double médiation, images, et images décrites ou évoquées par les textes, implique un double encodage, un double décodage, de multiples auteurs et de multiples narrataires. Autant de complexité a de quoi perdre l’historien de l’art.

Et pourtant, les deux moyens d’expression ont cela en commun qu’ils poursuivent inévitablement un but premier : la pertinence afin d’être compris. C’est la base de la communication. Ce sont les buts secondaires inhérents à chaque texte et chaque image qui, souvent, égarent le chercheur. Si l’on considère l’image, ainsi que le texte comme véhicules de significations propres, ils nécessitent obligatoirement d’être conçus en regard de codes préexistants. Que ces codes partagés soient basiques (parler la même langue) ou complexes (interprétatifs), ils supposent que le récepteur, le spectateur visé puisse en comprendre les significations.

La grande part d’inconnu est contenue dans l’implicite qui se transmet, entre l’objet et la signification qui lui est donnée au moyen-âge. Implicite qui n’est évidemment pas mentionné dans les écrits. Il peut être de plusieurs ordres, typologique par exemple, il est normal qu’un médiéval instruit  comprenne le sens d’une mention vétéro-testamentaire, (Epouse du Cantique des Cantiques) reliée à une représentation néo-testamentaire (Vierge Marie) . Le résultat en fait une figure de l’Ecclesia. L’implicite relève d’une compréhension commune et sans équivoque d’un même paradigme de pensée, si bien ancré qu’il est inutile de l’énoncer. Le problème que soulève cette question de l’implicite appartient à la problématique de la réception. Or on ne peut admettre que les images étaient comprises uniformément par le fait qu’il n’y ait pas de textes qui témoignent d’une réception . Il  est seulement possible, parfois, de dégager plusieurs niveaux de compréhension, selon le public, laïcs, clercs, moines, et selon le lieu des images, portails, chœurs, manuscrits... Et cela se complexifie, grâce à une polysémie, une superposition de couches herméneutiques  organisée en concordance. Cette attitude globale face au sens semble relativement bien ancrée dans la pensée médiévale.

Que penser des descriptions d’œuvres d’art au moyen-âge ? Les monuments fictifs ou réels, décrits dans la littérature médiévale ne sont pas forcément dessinables sur papier. La description d’œuvres, en tant que produit textuel, ne saurait être comprise directement comme élément informatif de l’aspect de l’œuvre. La représentation, tout comme la description, obéissent à des règles, des conventions. C’est un exercice périlleux que de tenter de transformer une description en image. Une telle tentative peut se lire, à propos des encensoirs tels qu’ils sont décris dans le Schedula diversarium artium de Théophile . L’auteur de l’article propose un dessin des deux encensoirs selon les explications de Théophile, mais reconnaît que la démarche pose un problème . Néanmoins, ce que confirme cette tentative de la recherche, c’est qu’il semble relativement difficile de se représenter l’objet par sa seule description textuelle.

C’est encore plus hasardeux d’affirmer que le rédacteur de la description ait bien vu l’image dont il parle . L’un des meilleurs exemples tiré de l’étude de M. Van der Grinten est celui d’un évêque de Ravenne qui avoue ne pas pouvoir dire quelles sont les quelques lignes poétiques sous les images, car il n’arrive pas à les voir clairement. Il a donc bien vu les images dont il parle. En revanche, notre accès à ce témoignage, évidemment textuel, se fait à travers un cadre très défini  : Agnellus décrit une iconographie courante, et ajoute une interprétation des détails de représentation, qui ne sont ni visibles sur la représentation, ni familière à la tradition. La différence entre voir et décrire s’illustre assez bien dans cette situation. Mais son témoignage est un cas isolé. La plupart du temps, il est impossible de prouver l’engagement personnel du rédacteur dans l’acte de voir, ce qui peut donc inclure une  médiation, voire plusieurs, comme un autre texte que le rédacteur aura copié, un autre témoin oculaire qui le lui aura raconté. A force de rajouter des intermédiaires, que reste-il, si ce n’est  de fortes tendances à la conventionnalisation de la description, peut-être au détriment de l’objet qu’elle est supposée décrire ? La description obéit à un code littéraire spécifique propre à l’époque, tout comme la compréhension d’un objet, ou d’un support de représentation répond à des codes préétablis. D’une manière générale, la description en soi ne saurait être objective, parce qu’elle émane d’une volonté de traduire linéairement une donnée visuelle simultanée. En tant qu’écrit, la description est un type explicatif de l’expression écrite, mais sa frontière avec le domaine narratif est indécise de base .

La réutilisation de sources antérieures dans les textes est aussi un phénomène problématique. Lorsqu’un auteur réutilise un élément descriptif, est-ce parce qu’il convient à la chose décrite, ou est-ce pour montrer son érudition ? Où encore, fait-elle partie d’une habitude de travail rédactionnel ? Cette réutilisation, probablement consciente, pourrait provenir de la pratique de la compilation et de l’apprentissage par cœur des textes. Certains topoi ont une très longue survie dans les textes. Ainsi, lorsque Baudri de Bourgueil (1060-1130), dans son poème à la comtesse Adèle , mentionne des fourmis grosses comme des chats vivants dans des sables aurifères, il est tentant de rapporter ces éléments aux Enquêtes d’Hérodote  qui rapporte les quatre mêmes éléments, des fourmis, de taille anormale, qui vivent dans le sable et en rapportent de l’or . Les sources réutilisées, transmises par les chemins les plus divers peuvent donc remonter très loin dans le temps, ce qui tendrait à prouver une certaine fixité, mais une très grande richesse, des associations qu’un médiéval peut concevoir.

L’autre problème généré par la description, c’est qu’il n’est pas évident qu’elle serve un but en soi. Décrit-on vraiment au moyen-âge pour informer un lecteur d’un aspect extérieur d’un objet ? La plupart du temps, la description s’inscrit dans une intention. Raoul ne s’attarderait peut-être pas sur l’insigne d’Henri II s’il ne pensait pas matérialiser une certaine vision de cet empereur au moyen de cette description. Et si l’on reprend le texte de Théophile et des encensoirs, Marie-Thérèse Gousset est forcée d’admettre qu’il s’agit d’une description d’un encensoir idéal, car la profusion d’éléments iconographiques ne saurait tenir sur un tel support. Un exemple plus tardif, le Libellus de formatione arche (1128) d’Hugues Saint-Victor, décrit également une représentation idéale de l’arche de Noé . Cerner l’intention des textes proposant une description est donc essentiel avant toute analyse plus profonde des relations complexes que peuvent entretenir textes et images.

Un autre aspect, peut-être moins étudié, est la relation indirecte entre texte et image. Un texte peut se révéler discours imagé, dans le sens qu’il convoque des conceptions figurées, comme l’image du Christ devenant signe céleste chez Adémar de Chabannes . Ces conceptions figurées ont également une valeur en tant qu’images dans un texte, et peuvent être traitées en rapport avec l’évolution des objets concrets. Dans le cas d’Adémar, la convocation de cette image pourrait être interprétée en lien avec le culte grandissant de la croix  et le succès de l’objet concret du crucifix au XIème. L’établissement de ce type d’interprétations, croisant plusieurs domaines (texte, art, liturgie) à plusieurs niveaux (vision individuelle, élaboration dans le temps, généralisation sociologique) doit également être soumis à l’examen critique du rapport entre texte et image.
De la même façon, une image peut mettre en scène du texte, que ce soit des tituli, des initiales ornées, ou un incipit encadré. Leur rapport peut être également biaisé par bien des choses, et parfois ce biais est difficilement qualifiable. Dans le cas des chapiteaux de Cluny, deux tituli répètent deux fois le même thème sur deux faces d’un chapiteau . Qu’en conclure ? Une erreur du sculpteur, une ancienne ou nouvelle forme de représentation de cette iconographie ? Les difficultés d’utilisation de la combinaison texte et image sont sans fin.

Internet necessitates and Unicode facilitates multilingual typography on a scale never seen before. As a result, multilingual typesetting, something that used to be an obscure academic specialism, suddenly sprung to the limelight. Since printing with movable type originated in Europe in a Latin-scripted environment, other scripts still tend to be treated as a complement to Latin script and their measurements normalized accordingly. The challenge that designers are facing is to create computer typography that does justice to all scripts and cultures, according to their own standards. This makes it all the more relevant to come to terms with Arabic.

Images of books appear in art, advertising and commercial logos to symbolize learning, knowledge and wisdom. In religious and secular rituals around the globe, people carry, show, wave, touch and kiss books and other texts, as well as read them. Such images and rituals utilize the iconic dimension of texts. During the early twentieth century, Shanghai was the center of China's new media culture. Described by the modernist writer Mu Shiying as "transplanted from Europe" and “paved with shadows,” for many of its residents Shanghai was a city without a past paradoxically haunted by the absent past’s traces. In Shadow Modernism William Schaefer traces how photographic practices in Shanghai provided a forum within which to debate culture, ethnicity, history, and the very nature of images. The central modernist form in China, photography was neither understood nor practiced as primarily a medium for realist representation; rather, photo layouts, shadow photography, and photomontage rearranged and recomposed time and space, cutting apart and stitching places, people, and periods together in novel and surreal ways. Analyzing unknown and overlooked photographs, photomontages, cartoons, paintings, and experimental fiction and poetry, Schaefer shows how artists and writers used such fragmentation and juxtaposition to make visible the shadows of modernity in Shanghai: the violence, the past, the ethnic and cultural multiplicity excluded and repressed by the prevailing cultural politics of the era and yet hidden in plain sight.

Dans ce petit exposé, je présente et discute brièvement quelques phénomènes saillants entre d’une part l’écriture et la typographie et d’autre part l’image et le dessin dans la construction d’un texte, d’une œuvre, bref : d’un message. Ces phénomènes peuvent être ramenés, d’une manière ou d’une autre, toujours à deux grands rapports entre image et graphie, image et texte :
1) Une première question concerne la matérialité du signe graphique et du signe figuré, de l’image ainsi que les possibles transformations de l’un dans l’autre et vice versa.
2) Une deuxième question concerne plus particulièrement la fonction (sémantique, pragmatique, poétique, stylistique, …) que l’image et l’écriture – le texte – peuvent occuper dans la construction d’un message.

"Abstract

This paper aims to show how Le Mirouer des simples ames, a theological treatise by the heretic beguine Marguerite Porete (†1310), constructs visual images to teach a specific set of doctrines to a public not necessarily clerical or educated. We should start from the fact that this book has no iconography in the traditional sense of the term, but the written text needs and claims ‘interior visualization techniques’ for its correct use. We will restore the perceptive historical context in which this book and its images were used and we will discuss the historical reception of the Mirouer as a didactic device. On the first place, we will focus on analyzing the ambiguous concept of ‘image’. On the second place, we will show how Marguerite incarnates doctrines into images by analyzing a concrete example. This will allow us to understand the position of the discourse facing its doctrinal-expressive tradition and to extract its ‘difference’.

Consciously acknowledged or not, by both creators and users, the man- made built environment is a potential symbol which creators and users can either ignore or recognize; not only a symbol but a metaphor.

              It is the intention of this monograph to validate, and, hopefully, encourage the intentional, controlled, and designed making of metaphors because building metaphors  are actual, real and consequential.  The matter of applying the technology and ideas to make such metaphors are abundant.  What is at question is the will and intention of using these resources. In other words, whether we intentionally make a metaphor or not, the building is a perceived metaphorically as a metaphor.

            Even if a builder intentionally aims at not making a metaphor the building is still perceived as a metaphor.  Creators of the environment perceive the created work. In different ways and for different reasons. These differences are in the effort, time and intensity of involvement with the creation and subsequent use of the work.

              The result of creator's efforts becomes a symbol and a metaphor, this phenomena is serious, important and with its consequences worthy of validating.  The creator, well-motivated or not, will be at the beginning with an idea and involved in the process of using technology to convert ideas into a reality.  The user, perceiving or not, is involved with the product of this process and for a much longer period of time., perhaps attaching to it  meaning, significance and importance often  different and unexpected by its author.

                When by chance, the importance and consequences of the authors concerns are successfully imparted and manifested in the work and perceived by the users we can observe that this phenomena is rooted in the author's own sensitivity and concern about what his context means to him and his family. What importance is the built environment in his own life and how would its improvement, change, or modification affect him. It has been personal, cerebral, and willful. The architect chose to do it and followed his decision by a sustained effort. Have architects ignored there right, authority and unwritten mandate by being careless about this creative goal.  The goal of making metaphors and symbols, and, if revived what would change?  Would they be more uplifted and would their lives improve? Would the perception of there lives improve?

Im Verlauf des Mittelalters, das als Projektionsraum für die restlose Andersartigkeit der Zahl, für eine Blüte neoplatonisch-symbolischer Sinnstiftung und für die Anfänge moderner Operationalität in der Geschichte steht, tritt eine antike, vormals allgemein verbreitete, so alltägliche wie gelehrte Praxis des Zahlgebrauchs schrittweise zurück. Dabei durchläuft sie den Prozess einer mehrfachen epistemischen Umkonfiguration. Vor dem Hintergrund ihrer anfänglichen prestigelosen Ubiquität wird sie in frühchristlicher Zeit theologisch aufgewertet, weiterentwickelt und breit dokumentiert, während sich ihr Verbreitungsraum sich in geographischer, sozialer und funktionaler und Hinsicht zunehmend verengt. Seit der Spätantike ist sie ausserhalb des monastischen Diskurses nur an den Rändern der Verschriftung greifbar. Seit dem 16. Jahrhundert findet sie noch einmal Eingang in die weltliche mathematische Literatur, um dann im beginnenden 18. Jahrhundert ganz aus der Mode zu kommen und zu verschwinden. Schon einen verbindlichen Namen hat sie nicht.

This present investigation, or activity of becoming Spinozist, begins with a fascination in a concept taken up towards the voluntary conclusion of Gilles Deleuze's life; the concept of a life. And in the midst of this concept we discover a further perplexing term, that of beatitude. Beatitude is the mode of being in which one achieves the maximum of active power or force of existing, and the minimum of reactive passions; the mind becomes a cause of its own ideas, and the body that of its actions in relation to an infi nite milieu. Beatitude, or what the Seventeenth Century Dutch philosopher Benedict de Spinoza also called the third kind of knowledge, is where one's essence comes to be most fully expressed in a world. Following Deleuze's Spinozist account, the question of a life, which attains absolute potential and absolute beatitude, installs one in the midst of a plane of immanence, which implies a mode of living or a way of life conducted as an affi rmative and ethico-aesthetic pursuit. We are in the midst of things, as Deleuze and Guattari are fond of telling us, and in being so unsteadily placed we discover ourselves in the context of certain contemporary political and ethical WHolland_Ch13_FPP.indd 247 WHolland_Ch13_FPP.indd 247

Gabriel Josipovici's novel The Big Glass reveals a multifarious fabric of rewriting. It first takes on an intertextual aspect since the text makes use of Marcel Duchamp's notes for his "Green Box" which accompanies his plastic work, the Large Glass. This first dimension brings to the foreground the notion of reiteration in two different ways. On the one hand, it is the idea of rewriting that comes into play for Duchamp's notes are reused and thus renewed by the novel. In this respect, Josipovici's fiction tackles rewriting as a dialectics of tension with the source of inspiration: a process of existing both on a par with and aloof from the hypotext, continuously hesitating between dependence and autonomy. On the other hand, the novel shows signs of intersemiotic transposition, drawing on Duchamp's work and imitating it with literary techniques. Both thematic intertextuality and formal intermediality contribute to the construction of a specific philosophy of time: the concept of "delay in glass" and the idea of chance are tokens of an intertextual as well as interartistic repetition. But then, the source of inspiration also serves as a prism through which the work of art comes into being. Staging prismatic patterns that Duchamp's work symbolizes permits to tinge the notion of rewriting in the novel with the idea of filtering or perceiving through. Hence repetition is that through which works of art are channelled. Indeed, the palimpsest seems to be akin to the delayed reception The Big Glass calls for. The protagonist of the novel, Goldberg, transcribes the notes of an artist, Harsnet. Repetition becomes as much a gesture of taking back as an act of redoing. From the very beginning Goldberg's scriptural activity hovers between reliable transcribing of a text and annotating, glossing, and interpreting it. The protagonist transcribes, but he also makes commentaries, and he even writes in a separate notebook, constructing yet another text. In this respect, rewriting becomes a practice consisting in writing through (filter, intermediacy) but also writing beside (Goldberg's notebook) or writing upon (margin, palimpsest). I wish to highlight this prismatic dynamics in Josipovici's novel by first examining the philosophy of time adumbrated with the help of the hypotext. Second, I focus on several degrees of repetition underlying the palimpsest activity, and ranging from the act of taking back (repossession) to the act of retouching or reconstructing (axiological level, hermeneutic level). Finally, I examine the idea of repetition as a stylistic device involving constant return, intermediacy or overlapping of narrative voices.

Resumo "A letra pintada" é uma pesquisa no campo teórico, que procura analisar as relações entre tipografia e a obra de arte, sobretudo no século 20, na complexa relação de realimentação, em que o elemento tipográfico é apropriado pela obra de arte, que por sua vez influencia o desenho deste. Interessa identificar os significados de uso do elemento tipográfico na obra de arte, tanto nas formas de seu emprego, que chamaremos de técnicas, como nas escolhas do próprio desenho deste elemento. Procura-se entender o fenômeno da incorporação do elemento tipográfico – e, portanto, da expressão escrita – pelas artes plásticas, que irá suscitar no espectador o conflito entre o olho e a mente, e este conflito, contemporaneamente, deve favorecer a mente; o que significa a absorção da linguagem verbal na obra de arte. Abstract "The painted letter" is a research in the theoretical field that analyzes the relationship between typography and the work of art, notably in the twentieth century, within the complex feedback process in which the typographic element is appropriated by the art work, whereas, on its turn, influences its design. Our interest consists on identifying meanings of use of the typographic element on the art work, as for its means of usage, to which we will refer as techniques, as for the choices of its own design. The search aims the understanding of the presence of the typographic element – therefore, written expression – within the plastic arts, that raises the contemporary conflict on the audience between the eye and the mind; meaning the absorption of verbal language on the art work.

This is a study on the notion of literary image. It focuses on several writers and poets (T. S.
