Sustainable Town Planning

After decades of dispersion, the city returns to urban models that were set aside. The recent past is dotted with recurrences, rediscoveries and afterthoughts: architecture becomes aware that it may be worthwhile finding and exploiting knowledge historically consolidated and urbanism thinks about the compact city qualities and how to reuse brownfield sites. The economic crisis combined with a new and deep-rooted concern for the environment and resources have led Europe to promote the sustainable development of urban growth and leveraging the increased diffuse sensitivity, model districts are made in the adoption of new standards. New settlements are drawn on a fine-grained functional and social mix, designed so to give shape to social sustainability.
The social heterogeneity is one of the challenges of the new compact city: if equality of access is guaranteed, the next problem is the coexistence among neighbors.
