Student Career Development Process

The study assessed the impact of social relationships on students' academic performance in secondary schools, Meru District Council, Arusha Tanzania. The following specific objectives: to assess the forms of relationships among students in secondary schools and their impact on students' academic performance; and to investigate on the effects peers, family, school, and neighbours on students' academic performance were studied. The study surveyed 504 secondary school students, and the data was analysed using descriptive statistics, Chi-square test for independence and one-way Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA. Findings revealed six forms of relationships among students including: Friendship, Peers, Acquaintances, Classmates, Support groups, and Romantic. The forms of relationships found to have a significant impact on students' academic performance. It was also found out that there are a significant effect of family, peers, schools and neighbours' interactions on students' academic performance. The study recommends that teachers pay attention on the kind of relationships among students because they may have both positive and negative outcomes, design guidance and counselling systems to guide students' social interactions; Schools should establish a mutual relationship between the school members and family members for the sake of understanding and follow ups of students both academic and behavioural progresses.

The theory of Cultural Capital states that students from “high culture” invest in scholastic pursuits and obtain returns in the form of academic achievement (Bourdieu, 1977). It was the intent of the researchers to replicate the study conducted by Geoffrey Moss (2005) within the context of a university setting with undergraduate Middle Eastern women. This small-scale humanities study highlights the cultural capital of Middle Eastern women and their undergraduate achievement. The data for the study was collected in two surveys handed to a random number of female students from a private university in Riyadh (KSA). The study gives a selected view of the context which includes family background and the importance given to academic attainment. Traditionally, Middle Eastern women have been viewed as not having invested into cultural capital. However, the results of this study have proven otherwise. Middle Eastern women do have cultural capital and likewise pursue scholastic activity.

The Indian government is facing a main challenge of youth unemployment for decades. Entrepreneurship is a frequent topic of discussion to many academicians and research scholars. The study sought to find out the factors affecting the management of women income generating projects. Literacy in general was reviewed in relationship to the success or failure of women income generating projects. The study was carried out using the ex-post facto design of study. The study targeted 100 women groups in the division. A sample of 86 women leaders were selected out of whom 50 answered the questionnaire correctly.The study established that women group leaders have very limited training in management skills, accounting and bookkeeping techniques. This limited the women’s access to credit facilities from banks and other financial institutions. The level of education was also a major factor because most of the women had upto Ordinary level of education. Majority of the members had either attained primary level of education or had no education at all. This study investigates the relationships between career decision-making constructs in terms of its three dimensions and the Big Five factors. Data were collected from a randomly selected sample of 230 high school students. Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to establish the relationship between the two sets of variables. Results indicate significant relationships between the Big Five factors and career decision-making constructs. Neuroticism was found to be negatively related with career decidedness; conscientiousness, extraversion, openness and agreeableness are positively and significantly correlated with career decidedness. Although the findings offer support of the usefulness of Big Five Model in career guidance, more studies of the general population are recommended to enable the model to be generalized.

This qualitative study aims to identify the motivations and constraints that undergraduate students experience in volunteering in different student-run organizations. The study applies models of volunteer function inventory and leisure constraints to the Egyptian context with focus on one private not-for-profit institution. The study highlighted the pivotal role of educational institutions in encouraging and implementing campus-based volunteering activities among students. The study identifies three groups of motivational factors to student volunteerism in this context: social motivation; personal enhancement; and career motivations. The study also identifies three constraints to student volunteerism. These refer to structural constraints; intrapersonal constraints; and interpersonal constraints. The study concludes with policy recommendations to increase and encourage student campusbased volunteerism in Egypt involving the Ministry of Higher Education, university administrations, and civil society organizations.

Center for Aging, with the support and commitment of the 28 colleges in the American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC), received funding from the Administration on Aging to support a program of faculty development in gerontology. This program provided training and technical assistance to faculty members of the AIHEC colleges and was designed to facilitate and strengthen the teaching of gerontological concepts at American Indian colleges. This project sought to build or enhance the local capacities of American Indian college educators to respond more effectively to aging issues among American Indian peoples. This project addressed three needs. First, the project responded to the need to increase knowledge about aging among American Indians. Second, the project responded to the need to extend gerontological information and expertise to American Indian communities. And third, the project responded to the need to improve and accentuate gerontological training for faculty in American Indian colleges. The most cost-effective way to respond to these needs is through upgrading the indigenous capacities of Pxisting and respected institutions of higher education serving American Indian peoples, the American Indian colleges. Specifically, faculty development was the means to provide needed information and develop expertise among American Indian college faculty who train students and paraprofessionals who deal with American Indian elders Nationally, little interaction has occurred between formal gerontological programs housed in universities with concentrations of gerontological expertise and resources and colleges that attempt to respond to the gerontological training and educational needs of clientele in their communities. We know of no effort to focus upon American Ind' z colleges in this fashion. In an attempt to bridge this gap we designed and conducted this nationally replicable collaborative project. The need to extend gerontological information is particularly important for the American Indian community because both the American Indian and the American Indian elderly population has grown substantially during the last decade. This rapid increase in the American Indian elderly population will continue during the foreseeable future. The American Indian population is the most rural of any subpopulation in the United States. As is typical of rural areas in general, resource problems afflict American Indian communities. Rural areas also lack gerontological expertise. Lack of access to gerontological expertise is an acute problem among American Indian elders living in rural/reservation environments and has a negative impact on their well-being. To make full use of available resources American Indian communities need to gain greater access to gerontological information and knowledge. Given the conditions of pervasive and chronic poverty among American Indians and a scarcity of resources, a massive relocation of AIHEC Faculty Development in Gerontology 11.111111E10, resources and gerontological specialists to these rural areas is unrealistic. Instead, this project has begun a feasible and cost-effective process of increasing gerontological knowledge, capacities and resources by upgrading the skills of people in indigenous, community-based programs. This project was designed to increase the capacity within the AIHEC colleges to develop and disseminate gerontological expertise in American Indian communities. Individuals trained in gerontology in general and American Indian aging in particular are one of the most important resources this project has begun to develop. Key to developing and sustaining the local nurturing of such expertise is the institutionalization of gerontology in American Indian colleges through faculty development. This project initiated a process to assist them in their efforts to develop quality training capabilities in gerontology. Isistent with their distinctive mission, this project focused on them because of their ique potential to extend gerontological expertise into Ina .n Country. METHODS We chose a collaborative design for this project and each activity was designed to support collaboration. This project grew out of prior and ongoing work condi acted at either KU or KSU. Over the past six years Dr. Peters and Ms. Stunkel at the K.SU Center for Aging have assisted 24 community colleges serving rural settings in the states of Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska in their gerontological curriculum and faculty development. We believed that, with appropriate modifications, this model would also be applicable to American Indian colleges. Much of the substantive content of the training program was created at KU. During the last decade, Dr. John at the KU Gerontology Center has been actively involved in education, instruction, and research relevant to American Indians. Because of his familiarity with American Indian aging issues and his established ties with the leadership in American Indian tribes, higher education, and the American Indian aging network of practitioners and academics, Dr. John played a key role in the design and implementation of the substantive components of the summer institute, the major focus of the project.

Is there a gender relationship between Holland's Personality types and choice of degree program among university student? Gender influence on the choice of a degree program was tested. The Holland's Self-Directed Search was used with 389 third year students at Kenyatta University. The results showed that gender was significantly correlated to the Holland personality types and the choice of degree programs. The results supports Holland's theory that gender predicts the choice of a degree program.

PurposeThis study responds to identified challenges of poor work-readiness of many graduates and the inadequate relation between education and work. Through students' perspectives, the study examines the extent to which selected South African universities are supporting their students in developing employability skills and the influence of such employability support on students' enhanced employability.Design/methodology/approachThrough purposive sampling, information was obtained from a sample of 402 final year students at two universities in South Africa. The sample consists of 600 students including both boys and girls. Questionnaire developed by the researcher is the technique used to collect the data. Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson coefficient of correlation are the techniques used to analyze the data. The result shows that the level of environmental awareness among students is low. No significance difference is found with respect to age and settlement in the environmental awareness level of the students. Conversely, significance difference was found in the environmental awareness of secondary school students belonging to different age group.

This paper explores the role of counselling in promoting better security architecture in Nigeria. It begins by defining counselling as the application of mental health, psychological, and human development principles through cognitive, affective, behavioural, and systematic intervention strategies. The relevance of counselling in nation-building is emphasized, highlighting how it can contribute to national growth and security. The modern concept of national security encompasses various dimensions, including social, economic, cultural, political, environmental, and technological factors. In Nigeria, security challenges such as ritualistic kidnapping, terrorism, banditry, religious conflicts, and clashes between farmers and herdsmen are discussed, with a particular focus on the relationship with religious differences. The causes of insecurity are attributed to factors such as porous borders, marginalization of minority groups, weak security apparatus, corruption, and external influences. Counselling is proposed as a solution to address these security challenges. The implications for counselling are discussed, particularly in relation to individuals suffering from depressive disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) due to insecurity-related incidents. It is recommended that counselling centres be established to assist individuals affected by these conditions, including security agents and kidnappers who may exhibit abnormal behaviours. The paper also emphasizes the importance of empathy in counselling, highlighting it as a technique used by counsellors to address clients' emotional states. The significance of security in economic growth, political stability, and ethnoreligious harmony is underscored, underscoring the increasing role of counselling services in achieving these objectives. Several recommendations are provided to address the security challenges in Nigeria. These include providing proper training for security agents, establishing skill acquisition centres to provide opportunities for youth employment, strengthening border control measures, ensuring transparent financial management of security funds, training more counsellors, and creating employment opportunities for counsellors across various communities in the nation. In conclusion, the paper stresses the importance of counselling in promoting better security architecture in Nigeria. By addressing mental health issues, fostering empathy, and providing support for individuals affected by insecurity, counselling can contribute to national growth and security. The recommendations put forth aim to improve security measures and create a conducive environment for the effective delivery of counselling services.

The secondary school students' background factors are important in the students' life and may determine the academic outcomes and the levels of self esteem. Self esteem is an important concept in child development and fluctuates as the secondary school student develops an overall view of themselves within the environment they are growing up in. This study sought to establish the relationship between the students' socioeconomic status and their self esteem and academic achievement in public secondary schools in Kericho County. This was an Ex Post Facto research that employed a Correlation research design, to determine whether there is a relationship between the students' socio economic status and their self esteem and academic achievement. The population was 9048 form four students enrolled in public secondary schools in the Kericho County from which a representative sample of 384 students and 17 class teachers was obtained. The schools that formed the study units were purposively selected to include only County schools and a stratified sampling technique was used to select the study units to ensure all strata (Single sex and mixed schools) in the population were represented. A questionnaire and an interview schedule were used to collect information on the students' background factors. A self-esteem inventory was used to collect data on self esteem of the students. The research instruments were piloted and tested to establish the reliability using the Cronbach's alpha and a reliability coefficient of 0.74 was obtained. Descriptive and inferential statistics (t-test and regression analysis) were used to analyze the data collected. The significant level was set at α =0.05. There was no statically significant relationship between students' family SES and their self-esteem. The study also establishes that although there was a slight difference in levels of self esteem between boys and girls the relationship was not statistically significant. There was no statistically significant relationship between student's family SES and their self esteem. The results imply that teachers need to pay more attention to the girls to ensure they maintained healthy levels of self esteem which would lead to improved psychological stability and better academic outcomes.

This article reports on the change in the career adaptability of participants exposed to an intervention programme characterized by career and selfconstruction principles compared to the change in participants who participated in standard, traditional career counselling lessons. Convenience and purposive sampling were used to select two groups (experimental and comparison of Grade 11 learners). Intervention occurred in both experimental groups. A mixed methods, quasi-experimental, pre-test/posttest comparison group design was used to gather data. Pre-and post-test scores obtained on the Career Adapt-Abilities Scale (CAAS) were analysed. The quantitative results suggested that the intervention programme did not improve participants' career adaptability compared to standard, traditional career counselling lessons as measured by the CAAS. Future research should include the use of measures of self-reflection and meaning-making to test the direct effects of experimental interventions.

The process of career decision-making is an important experience in the adolescent´s period often manifested by decision-making difficulties. The study analyzes the influence of trait emotional intelligence (TEI) in the process of career decision-making, especially on career decision-making difficulties, career decidedness and career decision self-efficacy (CDSE) assessed in a sample of high school students during their 2 nd career choice orientation testing. TEI as defined by Petrides (2009) and CDSE as defined by Betz et al. (1996), representing more stable personality-related variables, were studied in the context of career decision-making covering both more stable variables (emotional and personality-related aspects of career decision-making difficulties as specified by Saka, Gati & Kelly, 2008) and more developmental variables (career decidedness as defined by Lounsbury & Gibson, 2011). The study aims at the trait EI prediction level (as a personality trait) assessed by Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire-Short Form (TEIQue-SF) created by Petrides (2009) adapted to the Slovak conditions by Kaliská, Nábělková and Salbot (2015) of career decidedness and career decision self-efficacy above the career decision-making difficulties by correlation and regression analysis. Career decision-making difficulties were assessed by the Emotional and Personality Career Decision-Making Difficulties Scale (EPCD; Saka, Gati & Kelly, 2008), career decidedness was assessed by Lounsbury and Gibson´s Career Decidedness Scale (CDS, 2011), career decision self-efficacy by the Career Decision Self-Efficacy Scale-Short Form (CDSES-SF, Betz et al., 1996). The research sample consisted of 322 high school students (average age: 17.7 /SD=.46/; 58.4% of females). Results proved that high trait EI is significantly positively correlated to decidedness, to career decision self-efficacy, and significantly negatively to all the factors and global level of career decision-making difficulties. Trait EI significantly predicts career difficulties over and above career decidedness and career decision self-efficacy. The results empirically support the relevance of both trait EI and career decision self-efficacy in the career decision process, with practical implications for diagnostics and intervention within career counseling, as a means to strengthen the effectiveness of the process of career decision making in career choice and in career development.

To address concerns about limited training of psychologists working in long-term care (LTC) facilities, the Psychologists in Long-Term Care (PLTC) organization published Standards for Psychological Services in Long-Term Care Facilities (Lichtenberg et al., 1998). The expanding evidence base for knowledge and skills, the increasing diversity of LTC residents, and the complexity of presenting problems have compounded the guidance psychologists need when providing services in this setting. In this article, the PLTC Guidelines Revision Task Force presents PLTC guidelines based on the original prescriptive PLTC Standards. The content of the PLTC Standards was updated and the format changed from prescriptive standards to aspirational guidelines. We begin with general guidelines regarding knowledge and skills in LTC (education and training. understanding of LTC systems. end-of-life care), followed by specific guidelines covering the basic psychological service activities in LTC (referral, assessment, treatment, ethical issues, and advocacy). The PLTC Guidelines are designed to provide direction for psychologists who work, or plan to work, in LTC and to guide continuing education pursuits. Public Significance Statement It has been 25 years since the publication of the PLTC Standards of Practice for Psychologists in Long-Term Care. The composition of the long-term care (LTC) population has changed, and the need for aspirational guidelines for psychologists to enter the LTC field has grown in increasing importance. The authors hope that these guidelines will serve as a guide to training needs and optimal mental health practice in LTC settings.

The purpose of this paper is to illuminate the challenges women head teachers encounter in advancing to school leadership. This study utilized the phenomenological approach, a branch of qualitative methodologies. Data collection methods involved semi-structured in-depth interviews and a participatory learning and appraisal workshop. This study reveals that the pervasive entrenched culture of patriarchy operates in various ways such as androcentrism, gender and sex stereotypes, sex discrimination and old boy networks at different levels of school organization, management and leadership and causes impediments to women’s advancement to school leadership. The study hopes to abate preconceived notions of women’s underrepresentation in school leadership and subsequently engender strategies to eliminate inequity. It fills the void in the available literature on women teachers and school leadership in Fiji and the Pacific region with implications for further research.

Table-for-Choice was perceived as more effective, but individuals' confidence in their choice was higher in the Circles-for-Choice condition. The authors present a 3-stage model-Prescreening, In-depth exploration, and Choice (PIC)-aimed at increasing the quality of the career decision-making process and its outcome. PIC provides a framework for a dynamic and interactive process that emphasizes the role of career counselors as decision counselors, whose aim is to facilitate an active decision-making process. The proposed model offers the advantages of systematic, analytical processing, while remaining compatible with individuals' natural way of thinking. The authors outline the implementation of PIC, discuss the role of intuition in decision making, and compare the PIC with the person-environment fit approach. This article presents a general model based on decision theory (e.g., Bell, Raiffa, & Tversky, 1988; Raiffa, 1968) that can be used as a practical framework for conceptualizing and improving career decision-making processes. We rely on decision theory because, as in other decision situations, there is an individual who must make a decision, there are several alternatives to choose from, and the individual has many considerations for comparing and evaluating the alternatives. We tested the associations among the career decision-making difficulties, the career decision status, and either (a) the career decision-making profiles of 575 young adults, or (b) the coping strategies of 379 young adults. As hypothesized, a more advanced decision status was negatively associated with both career decisionmaking difficulties (g 2 = .24) and the use of non-productive coping strategies (g 2 = .10), and positively associated with an adaptive career decision-making profile (g 2 = .05) and the use of support-seeking coping strategies (g 2 = .06). Productive coping strategies were not found to be associated with decision status (g 2 = .01). The results and their implications are discussed. Résumé. The famous economist, Joseph Schumpeter, described entrepreneurs as agents of innovation and economic transformation. Their projects are the source of new jobs, higher income and creative energy (McGraw, 2007).

Background: This study explored the potential role that gender and race play in influencing the career choices of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) college students. Objectives: This research aimed to explore the possible role that gender and race play in influencing the career choice of students enrolled at one of the country's public TVET colleges. Method: An exploratory qualitative approach was adopted for this study. A total of 33 students were randomly selected to form part of the study sample. A convenient sampling method was used to select a total of 33 students who participated from three campuses. Multiple data collection methods comprising semi-structured interviews and focus groups were used to collect data. Thematic content analysis was used to analyse the collected data. Results: The findings reveal that gender and race continue to play a significant role in career decision-making and career destinations of students. In particular, the results show that it is important to pay special attention to women in TVET colleges. Conclusion: The article concludes that career decision-making is an important topic in the public TVET college sector. It is important to look at the enablers and disablers of career decision-making, including gender and race. Contribution: The study contributes towards guiding TVET colleges on how to support new entrants with their career choices. It brings further insight into the potential role of gender and race in influencing the career choices of students enrolling at TVET colleges.

Kesiapan  mahasiswa  menapak  dunia  kerja,  dunia  usaha  ataupun  studi  lanjut  S2  bukan  hanya dibekali knowledgedan hardskill,  tetapi  juga  perlu  dibekali  dengan  soft  skill  dan  kematangan  kepribadian  Islam. Pengembangan  soft  skill  bisa  diselenggarakan  melalui  kegiatan  training.  Pesantren  Wisuda  merupakan puncak  dari  rangkaian  kegiatan  training  bagimahasiswa  STEI  Hamfara.  Akan  tetapi  belum  pernah dilakukan  evaluasi  training  secara  kuantitatif  untuk  mengetahui  respon  mahasiswa  peserta  training. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui tanggapan penilaian peserta training sebagai feedback. Program training Pesantren Wisuda mendapatkan penilaian sangat baik (85,48 %) dari peserta, sehingga perlu terus dikembangkan  dalam  perannya  memantapkan  penanaman  softskill,  memantapkan  menapak  bisnis  / profesi  dan  memantapkan  kepribadian  Islam  dalam  bisnis  /  profesi  lulusan  di  STEI  Hamfara.  Pesantren wisuda  memantapkan  calon  lulusan  untuk  menapak  bisnis  /  profesi  yaitu  kemantapan  langkah  bisnis  / profesi yang akan / tengah digeluti (4,25) dan kesadaran untuk terus belajar dan berinovasi dalam bisnis / profesi  (4,429).  Pesantren  wisuda  memantapkan  kepribadian  Islam  dalam  bisnis  dan  profesi,  terutama memantapkan  peran  dalam  mendakwahkan  dan  mempraktikkan  ekonomi  Islam  (4,643),  kesadaran berjamaah  /  kolaborasi  /  kerjasama  dalam  bisnis  /  profesi  (4,571)  dan  kesadaran  ketawakkalan  dalam menjalankan  bisnis  /  profesi  (4,556).  Pesantren  Wisuda  memantapkan  softskil  terutama  etika  mengasah berinteraksi  dengan  pihak  lain  (4,405)  dan  kemampuan  berfikir  kritis  (4,357).  Adapun  yang  perlu ditinghkatkan    adalah    pemantapan    soft    skill    kemampuan    problem    solving    (3,857),    kemampuan berkolaborasi  dengan  pihak  lain  (3,929)  dan  keterampilan  interpersonal  (interpersonal  skill)  (3,929). Students' readiness to enter the world of work, the business world or S2 further studies is not only equipped with knowledge andhard skills, but also needs to be equipped with soft skills and maturity of the Islamic personality. Soft skills development can be held through training activities. Pesantren Graduation is the culmination of a series of  training  activities  for  STEI  Hamfara  students.  However,  there  has  never  been  a  quantitative  evaluation  of training  to  find  out  the  response  of  the  students  participating  in  the  training.  This  study  aims  to  determine  the assessment responses of training participants as feedback. The Graduation Pesantren training program received an  excellent  assessment  (85.48%)  from  the  participants,  so  it  needs  to  continue  to  be  developed  in  its  role  of strengthening  the  cultivation  of  soft  skills,  establishing  business  /  profession  and  strengthening  the  Islamic personality  in  the  business  /  profession  of  graduates  at  STEI  Hamfara.  The  graduation  boarding  school strengthens  prospective  graduates  to  tread  business  /  profession,  namely  the  steadiness  of  business  steps  / professions  that  will  /  are  being  pursued  (4.25)  and  awareness  to  continue  to  learn  and  innovate  in  business  / profession (4,429). The graduation boarding school established the Islamic personality in business and profession, especially solidifying the role in indicting and practicing Islamic economics (4,643), congregational awareness / collaboration  /  cooperation  in  business  /  profession  (4,571)  and awareness  of  laughter  in  running a business  / profession (4,556). Pesantren Graduation strengthens soft skills, especially the ethics of honing interaction with other parties (4,405) and critical thinking skills (4,357). What needs to be improved is the strengthening of softskills for problem solving ability (3,857), the ability to collaborate with other parties (3,929) and interpersonal skills  (3,929).  Future  research  needs  to  be  sharpened  for  the  direction  of  entrepreneurship  development, professional business manager / banker professions, or readiness for academic pathways through further studies

Two Institute of Medicine (IOM; 2008, 2012) reports have underscored that the existing health and mental health workforces are woefully unprepared to meet the needs of older adults who by the year 2030 will be 20% of the U.S. population. This symposium discusses four projects that are consistent with IOM recommendations for building a more aging competent workforce. These efforts target different audiences and use different educational approaches. Hinrichsen reviews results of a survey of geropsychology specialists to identify foundational "exposure level" geropsychology knowledge competencies for generalist psychologists (based on the Pikes Peak Model for Training in Professional Geropsychology); and how they concretely inform the development of continuing education curricula. Phillips describes a program that introduces a geriatrics framework to internal medicine residents in a Dept. of Veterans Affairs healthcare system. Moye details a series of webinars ("Advancing Your Confidence as an Educator in Geriatrics and Gerontology") that builds skills in providing education and consultation for a group of webinar participants many of whom identified as specialists in their respective professions. Emery-Tiburcio outlines a free, on-line, interactive educational platform for healthcare providers, older adults, and families related to normal aging, health, dementia, and other topics. She further describes how this effort has informed development of learning activities for classroom and seminars. Hyer will provide an integrative discussion of these four presentations.

The need for clinical geropsychologists currently exceeds the availability, and this imbalance is expected to worsen along with the impending growth in the older adult population. Effective geropsychology mentoring may be helpful in meeting this challenge. However, little is known about mentoring within clinical geropsychology. The present paper reports on a survey of mentoring practices and needs. Findings indicate that a large majority of clinical geropsychology trainees and professionals at all levels have a mentor and that the contributions mentors make are highly valued. Among the needs identified by survey respondents was guidance for effective mentoring. Results of the survey suggest that efforts to enhance mentoring within clinical geropsychology may contribute to the goal of expanding the workforce to meet future needs.

Geropsychology is a vibrant field of scientific study, pedagogy, and clinical practice, and the need for more geropsychologists will only expand as the population ages. This study involved in-depth, semi-structured telephone interviews with 30 clinical geropsychologists about their training and current work. Qualitative coding of interviews was undertaken using an inductive coding approach. Results revealed four major themes: factors influencing entry into the field of geropsychology, the rewards of being a geropsychologist, competing demands on time and money, and barriers to involvement in leadership. These results suggest some possible points of intervention to attract people to the field of aging and promote their professional development and success.

Background: Diabetes is a common health problem among Malaysians as the statistics showed that the country has been listed among those with high number of diabetic patients in the population. While the Ministry of Health Malaysia is actively playing their roles in preventing the disease, there is still a continuous increase in the number of new diabetics each year. Diabcare Malaysia 2008 study showed deteriorating glycaemic control of the diabetic patient and poor adherence to diet, exercise, and self monitoring of blood glucose (Mafauzy; 2011). As diabetes may causes a lot of health complications, preventing the disease seem very crucial and practical in the long run (Mustaffa, 2004). Objective: To evaluate the level of diabetes awareness in central region of Kota Bharu, Kelantan, and to identify factors that influence this awareness. Methods: A total of 150 respondents were interviewed through a predesigned questionnaire. Verbal consent was taken before administering the questionnaire. The following questions were asked in the questionnaire: name, age, gender, address, educational status and attitude towards diabetes awareness. Chi-square test was employed for association analysis using SPSS version 16. Results: Out of 150 subjects, 49.33% were male and. the educational level of the study population was high, with 54.67% of the having diploma and degree level. The knowledge on diabetes was high (79.33%) and majority of the knowledgeable respondents (24.00%) were aged between 21-30 years. There was a significant association between high knowledge on diabetes with level of educational background (p<0.01). Most of respondents (66.0%) showed good attitude toward diabetes awareness. About 33.30% stated that they never check for blood glucose level due to busy with work. Significant associations were found between good attitude toward diabetes with education level. (p<0.01).and with employment status (p<0.01). Conclusions: Study findings indicate that individuals with high educational level, currently employed status and aged between 21-30 years were more likely to have high level of knowledge about the disease and good attitude toward diabetes awareness.

There is a growing concern about the number of junior investigators in nursing committed to gerontological research. A rarity of nurses conducting research already exists since only 0.6% of the 2.2 million employed registered nurses in the US have a doctoral degree in nursing or a related field. This limited scholarly resource challenges junior investigators to identify appropriate programs to receive training and mentoring in gerontological research. Yet, this limitation can be addressed by an intensive summer program intended to mentor junior investigators in the development of gerontological research. This article discusses the feedback of 8 junior investigators participating in a week-long intensive program for gerontological research. Participating in this intensive summer program provided opportunities for the junior investigators to develop mentoring relationships and receive useful feedback with directions to develop research careers.

Indian Government is offering numerous incentives and has introduced various schemes to promote women entrepreneurship. The RAISE Family Caregiving Advisory Council, created under the Recognize, Assist, Include, Support, and Engage (RAISE) Family Caregivers Act (2018) has been tasked to support the Secretary of Health and Human Services in developing a national family caregiving strategy. This presentation reports on research commissioned to support the activities of the Council, which aimed to engage a broad range of stakeholders in identifying concrete strategies to carry out the Goals identified as critical to supporting family caregivers. One priority was to engage with organizations representing the diversity of family caregivers, including groups working with Blacks, Indigenous people, Asian-Americans, Pacific Islanders, and other people of color, along with groups such as faith organizations that work with under-resourced communities. That is the Question! "Sir, does your (emphasis not mine) company have a job for someone like me?" "I'm sure something could be worked out, what are you majoring in?" "Mathematics", "I'm pursuing a Masters in Physics…", "Political science…", "Economics…", "Education...", "Chemistry…" This is the introductory conversation that I had with a number of students in a job fair recently organized by a renowned university, where I was representing my company as a potential employer. Sadly, in our line of business, there isn't an application of these sciences. Seeing the heartrending looks of abject dejection on their faces, I engaged them in prolonged conversations trying to cheer them up, and to explain to them the importance of their respective subjects, giving some advice where I could, some mentoring, and a lot of encouragement.

The secondary school students' background factors are important in the students' life and may determine the academic outcomes and the levels of self esteem. Self esteem is an important concept in child development and fluctuates as the secondary school student develops an overall view of themselves within the environment they are growing up in. This study sought to establish the relationship between the students' socioeconomic status and their self esteem and academic achievement in public secondary schools in Kericho County. This was an Ex Post Facto research that employed a Correlation research design, to determine whether there is a relationship between the students' socio economic status and their self esteem and academic achievement. The population was 9048 form four students enrolled in public secondary schools in the Kericho County from which a representative sample of 384 students and 17 class teachers was obtained. The schools that formed the study units were purposively selected to include only County schools and a stratified sampling technique was used to select the study units to ensure all strata (Single sex and mixed schools) in the population were represented. A questionnaire and an interview schedule were used to collect information on the students' background factors. A self-esteem inventory was used to collect data on self esteem of the students. The research instruments were piloted and tested to establish the reliability using the Cronbach's alpha and a reliability coefficient of 0.74 was obtained. Descriptive and inferential statistics (t-test and regression analysis) were used to analyze the data collected. The significant level was set at α =0.05. There was no statically significant relationship between students' family SES and their self-esteem. The study also establishes that although there was a slight difference in levels of self esteem between boys and girls the relationship was not statistically significant. There was no statistically significant relationship between student's family SES and their self esteem. The results imply that teachers need to pay more attention to the girls to ensure they maintained healthy levels of self esteem which would lead to improved psychological stability and better academic outcomes.

Career decision is a critical and crucial decision for human life, organizational stability and economic growth of a country. Career decision differs with the time based on several factors which lead to organizational commitment and job satisfaction. Identifying the factors affecting career decision also helps to develop entrepreneurship that can create new employment opportunities of a country. This Study examines the factors affecting career decision among university students and professionals in Bangladesh. After examining 11 dimensions from personal characteristics of decision making, 5 dimensions have been observed significantly influencing career decision making in both of the level of study and work life. Factor analysis has been used to identify the factors that influence career decision and to reduce the unnecessary factor. Correlation is also used to identify the most highly correlated factor. On the other hand, some job related factors also have been justified for influencing career decision making according to their priority. Simple descriptive statistics has been used to measure the degree of influence of job-related factors. General Linear Model is also used to examine the differences of career decision making depending on the job related factors. Non probability random sampling has been taken as a sampling technique for collecting data. Sample size for this study is 212 respondents, 106 respondents from graduate students of universities and 106 respondents from service holders. It is observed that career decision has been significantly influenced by pay, family influence, location, job security. Types of work, personal satisfaction, work environment, opportunities for employment have no significant impact on career decision.

There is an alarming supply and demand gap for geropsychology expertise within the United States. Health policy experts called for increasing geriatric mental health competencies for all mental health providers, including within Veterans Health Administration (VHA), to address this problematic gap. The VHA Geriatrics Scholar Program (GSP) Psychology Track was developed because there were no commercially available trainings in geropsychology for licensed psychologists. Developing the GSP Psychology Track was based on an evidence-based educational model for the VHA primary care workforce; and included a stepwise curriculum design, pilot implementation, and program evaluation. More than 300 individuals have earned doctoral degrees in gerontology since 1993, yet little is known about their training, professional placement, and contributions to the field. Given this lack of information, the authors sought to define the emerging mass of doctoral gerontologists. In this study, the authors analyzed results from the 2014 Gerontology Education Longitudinal Study survey sample of 84 individuals who earned a doctoral degree in gerontology between 1993 and 2013. Results revealed doctoral gerontologists completed training requirements that were consistent across eight programs offering doctorates in gerontology. The authors also found doctoral gerontologists have been successful in securing jobs in academic and nonacademic organizations, creating gerontological knowledge, and translating their work into other fields. The authors concluded by considering how the successful integration of doctoral gerontologists might continue, and they propose directions for future research.

This article reports on the Gerontology Doctoral Student Assessment Model (GDSAM), a comprehensive web-based system premised on developing an evaluation mechanism attuned to the special requirements of advanced graduate education at the doctoral level. The system focuses on longitudinal tracking of selected dimensions of intellectual, professional, and personal progress. This involves interlocking elements of online personal dossier development, student self-rating assessment, faculty assessment of student progress, and a means of communicating interactive and iterative feedback among students and faculty. Preliminary findings from initial data collection using the assessment system indicate that students who have completed and passed their qualifying examinations are more confident in their ability to articulate diverse ideas in professional settings, work in direct contact with research participants, present research findings to scientific audiences, and adjust to the rigors of doctoral education. Additional feedback from participants in the system suggests that, although important ethical issues of confidentiality and appropriate use must be recognized and monitored, the GDSAM has strong potential to provide an appropriate assessment tool at the doctoral level. Implementation of such a system throughout doctoral education in gerontology provides a unique opportunity for tracking the impact and effectiveness of doctoral education in an emergent field as additional programs come on line. Within the broader field of higher education, the initiative to develop comprehensive models of program evaluation and tools for the dynamic assessment of student progress has gained momentum. The development of e-portfolios, a web-based system allowing for collection of scholarly works, and a system for both faculty and student reflection on strengths and weaknesses, has provided a rich resource for individual and programmatic development (Miller & Development and implementation of the initiative upon which this paper was based was facilitated by the University of Kentucky Office of Assessment Quality Enhancement Program Grant # CIP 30.1101; PCS 046. With the rapid aging of the population, the need for gerontological educators to identify pedagogical strategies to increase interest and prepare students continues to grow. Literature on gerontological pedagogy has shed light on the success of high-impact practices, creative assignments, pedagogical interventions, and even different course modalities when it comes to effectively delivering gerontological content and engaging students. Additionally, the Academy for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE) provides a wealth of suggestions for creating and implementing effective gerontology courses and assignments.
