Scarabaeinae Taxonomy

Butterflies, dung beetles, and plant species richness and abundance in organic and conventional crops in three regions of Costa Rica. One of the main causes of biodiversity loss is related to agriculture increase and the use of chemicals. Organic farming has been proposed as a solution to biodiversity loss, for that reason we evaluated the species richness, abundance and composition of diurnal butterflies, dung beetles, herbs and trees in three different agroecosystems during 2009-2010 in Costa Rica. Organic and non-organic coffee shade (San José), vegetables (Alajuela) and Cocoa-banana farms (Talamanca) were selected to make comparisons of these biological groups. In each farm we established three transects to capture butterflies, 20 pitfall traps to capture beetles, two plots to count trees and two sub-plots to count herbs. The Cocoa-banana organic crops had higher species richness of butterflies and higher mean abundance than coffee shade and cocoa-banana crops. We detected a greatest abundance of beetles in organic farms of shade coffee and cocoa-banana. In the vegetable and cocoa-banana crops there was more abundance of herbs. Organic cocoa-banana had more trees species and they are more abundant than in conventional crops. Butterflies, herbs and trees were less similar in species composition between organic and non-organic crops; however beetles were more similar between systems. Organic shade coffee and cocoa-banana are providing a more diverse habitat and resources to butterflies than vegetables farms. The more complex plant structure, the shaded habitats and mammals present in shade coffee and cocoa-banana organic farms favor beetle abundance. In addition, beetles could be adapted to altered ecosystems. Organic farms can play an important role in butterfly and beetles conservation in countryside areas, and its benefits are influenced by forest presence and the manner in which farmers manage their land.

Species diversity and abundance of scarab beetles was studied from Assam, northeast India from 20072013. A total of 44 species of scarabs under 6 sub families and 21 genera were identified, out of which 41 species are new records. Majority of the phytophagous species belonged to the subfamily Melolonthinae and Rutelinae while the coprophagous species belonged to Dynastinae and Cetoniinae. Species profiling revealed that Apogonia ferruginea was the most predominant species and contributed 17.60 per cent out of the total number of beetles followed by Anomala chlorosoma (14.56%), Adoretus spp. (12.75%), Apogonia area (10.94%) and Sophrops irridipennis (10.63%) with peak population in the month of July (419.14). Multiple regression analysis with weather parameters revealed that beetle population was influenced by combined effects of maximum temperature, total rainfall and wind speed in all years with maximum variation in 2007 (78.66%) and minimum in 2012 (59.56%).

In their review of the subgenus Scarabaeus (Scarabaeolus) Balthasar, 1965 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae), Deschodt et al. (2015) described seven new species from Africa. One of these was Scarabaeus (Scarabaeolus) nitidus Davis & Deschodt, known by only twelve specimens from Botswana. This new name is preoccupied by Scarabaeus nitidus Linnaeus, 1758, a fact that was overlooked. The latter species has been known as Cotinis nitida (Linnaeus) since Burmeister (1842) placed the species in his new genus Cotinis. It belongs to the subfamily Cetoniinae of Scarabaeidae, is called the Green June Beetle, and is a common pest species throughout most of the eastern United States (Goodrich 1966; Woodruff 2008).

Melolonthinae and Rutelinae of Scarabaeidae (Coleoptera) are ubiquitous pests. Studies during 2013 and 2014 document the species diversity of white grubs in the sub-Himalayan and northern plains of India. Surveys conducted in four states, viz. Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan revealed high species diversity representing 65 species under 16 genera. The species richness, evenness and composition varied among the states. Higher species diversity was recorded in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh of the sub-Himalayan region when compared to Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan of the northern plains. The species abundance distribution followed log normal distribution in all places except Uttarakhand, where the curve skewed to the left due to overweight of species with low abundance. The species dominance and abundance patterns in different regions are presented. The new distributional records, Anomala pictipes Arrow and Popillia macclellandi Hope from Uttarakhand, Anomala propinqua Arrow and Popillia marginicollis Hope from Himachal Pradesh and Anomala stenodera Arrow from Uttar Pradesh are provided.

Formicdubius Philips & Scholtz, 2000, a genus of South African scarab dung beetle, is synonymised with Haroldius Boucomont, 1914. All four African species of Haroldius, formerly in the genus Afroharoldius Janssens, possess trichomes. Trichome location and degree of development in the African species are discussed. Th e fi rst record of Haroldius modestus Janssens from Malaŵi is given.

Coleoptera is an order of insects commonly called beetles. The diversity of beetles is very wide. They are found in all major habitats, except marine and the Polar Regions. There are particular species that are adapted to practically every kind of diet. The family Scarabaeidae is the largest family of insects which contains more than 30000 species in the world. Many species are of great economic importance. Many species of beetles are serious pests of agriculture (Leptinotarsa decemlineata), forests (borers and miners), stored food, wood, leathers, furs, and fabric. Some of the phytophagous species are free feeders on foliage; some bore into the woods or fruits; some are leaf miners; some attack the roots and some feed on the parts of blossoms. The study area of Tenkasi district was divided into 10 various locations as follows Tenkasi, Courtallam, Five falls, Puliyarai, Kadayam, Senkottai, Kadayam, Alwarkurichi, Kadayanallur, Puliyankudi, Sankarankovil. A total of 30 species were observed from the study area. We collected 13 families of beetles and 2 orders. The species Opatrum sabulosum, Onthophagus taurus, Aphthona flava, Hydrophilus acuminatus, Oryctes nasicornis, Naupactus leucolona, Adoretus ictericus, and Bubas bubalus are notised more abundant in our study area. Chrysanthia geniculata, Pseudocneorhinus bifasciatus and Calligrapha multipunctata are rare beetles in our study area. Oryctes rhinocerous was one of the most dangerous pest beetles in agricultural lands. Dung beetles (Scarabaeidae), borers (Cerambycidae), ground beetles (Carabidae), leaf beetles (Chrysomelidae), ladybird beetles (Coccinellidae), bark beetles (Scolytidae), flat-horned beetles (Paussidae) and bess beetles (Passalidae) were most prominent families observed throughout the study. The beetle diversity was not found similar in different habitat types.

Bu çalışma, Türkiye-Ankara ili Kazan ve Çubuk ilçeleri arasında bulunan, önemli doğa koruma alanı olan, Kazan tepelerinin Scarabaeidae faunasının belirlenmesini amaçlamıştır. Altı farklı alanda, farklı zamanlarda kurulmuş çukur tuzaklarına yakalanan örnekler incelenmiştir. Tuzaklardan 4 altfamilyaya ait 50 tür ve alt tür seviyesinde takson tespit edilmiştir. Belirlenen tür ve alt türlerin Türkiye dağılışları verilmiştir. Çalışma sonucunda bu tür ile birlikte 22 tür ve alt tür Ankara ilinden ilk kez kaydedilmiştir.

The diversity and distribution of aquatic and semi-aquatic Hemipterans were studied from Amrabad and Kawal Tiger Reserve of the state Telangana. This report documents 38 species of aquatic and semi-aquatic hemipterans belonging to 22 genera and ten families from Amrabad and Kawal Tiger Reserve. Interestingly, 20 species were noted as additions to the state of Telangana. Two species Ranatra libera Zettel, 1999 and Rhagovelia sumatrensis Lundblad, 1933 were observed, where both species are new distributional records to peninsular India. Kawal Tiger Reserve (KTR) showed higher species diversity than the Amrabad Tiger Reserve (ATR) with respect to species richness. The present report is the first documentation from both tiger reserves on aquatic and semi-aquatic hemipterans from the state of Telangana.

Background. Macrocyclic lactones (ML) are effective in controlling endo-and ectoparasites in livestock. ML, specially ivermectin and moxidectin, have a typical pharmacokinetic profile of lipophilic molecules with slow degradation and when administered to livestock are excreted in the faeces almost unaltered. ML released into the environment, can cause lethal and sublethal effects on dung beetles (DB). Objective. To document the main scientific contributions of our research group to the awareness of the adverse effect of ML on DB associated with livestock environments under grazing systems. Methodology. The compilation of scientific articles from the studies carried out by a research group in the first 50 years of the FMVZ-UADY was carried out. Results. The studies have shown that ML (IVM-1%, IVM-3.15%, MOX-10%) in dung from cattle treated with injectable formulations had a sublethal effect on DB. For the species Canthon indigaceus chevrolati dung from cattle treated with injectable formulations of IVM (1% and 3.15%) and MOX (1% and 10%) do not produce lethal and sublethal effects. Faecal ivermectin residues may induce changes in attraction of some neotropical DB species to dung pats. Implications. Current ML application methods may have negative effects on the environmental services provided by dung beetles, and therefore need to be modified to minimize any impacts they might have on these vital members of tropical livestock systems. Conclusions. The review shows the adverse effects of ML on DB in the Mexican tropics; however, for the C. i. chevrolati, dung from cattle treated with IVM and MOX, do not produce lethal and sublethal effects, which suggests some type of tolerance Key words: Dung beetles; macrocyclic lactones; fecundity; survival; toxic effect. Syrphid flies frequently called as Hover flies established as effectual pollinators of plants. They exhibit a substantial morphological assortment within the family. To comprehend their diversity, a few isolated studies have so far been carried out in eastern and western Himalayas. This current paper includes a complete distributional scenario of Syrphidae recorded from India, an updated checklist consisting of altogether 69 Genera and 355 species along with their distributional array within the country have been reported here, however some species which were reported in earlier literature but due to lack of proper literature documentation they has not been documented in this current and updated checklist, namely, Syrphus agraensis Nayar & Nayar 1965, Scavea lunata (Wiedemann, 1830). In this present investigation the latest synonimisation and sub genus status as well the current nomenclature pattern has been taken into account. This study may find future applications in monitoring the conservational factors that may affect their distribution and/or diversity.

The data from the Dampa Tiger Reserve (DTR) (23 o 20' to 23 o 47' N latitude and 92 o 15' to 92 o 30' E longitude) situated in the district of West Phaileng, Mizoram, NE India revealed the occurrence of 55 thrips species belonging to 3 families, 5 sub-families and 40 genera. All the fifty-five species with the exception of Nagathrips crenulatus were collected and recorded for the first time from the state of Mizoram. Among these, 28 species placed in 21 genera belong to the suborder Terebrantia while 27 species clubbed in 19 genera are tubuliferans. In terms of feeding habit and habitat, 17 species are foliage invaders, 15 are flower inhabiting anthophilous species, 12 are fungal spore feeding mycophagous forms, 6 are gall inducing cecidogenous thrips, 4 are of grass dwellers and one is aquatic.

The present investigation was carried out to study the fauna of aquatic beetles of Koundinya wildlife sanctuary (India). A total of forty two species belonging to four families was recorded. The highest number of species was found in the family Dytiscidae followed by Hydrophilidae, Gyrinidae and Noteridae. All the species are recorded for the first time from the wildlife sanctuary and 9 species are new from the state of Andhra Pradesh.

Between the months of August 2003 and February 2004, I conducted a study about the dung beetles of El Goaltal, Carchi Province, Ecuador. Fourteen transects were established for the study (seven in highland grasslands or páramos and seven in altered forest) where pitfall traps were used, baited with human feces and carrion. In total, 2982 individuals belonging to 22 species were obtained. The general abundance was larger in secondary forests, with 4.4 times more captured beetles than in grasslands.

Resumen. Se describe una nueva especie del género Homeomastax de la subfamilia Eumastacinae, en el área limítrofe entre las regiones Andina y Orinoquía (departamentos del Meta y Huila) de Colombia. Debido a características únicas en la anatomía fálica la especie se plantea como un eslabón entre los géneros Erythromastax y Homeomastax, además la coloración exclusiva de la especie llevan a plantear la posibilidad de una nueva clasificación en la subfamilia. A new species of the genus Homeomastax of the subfamily Eumastacinae is described found in the border area between the Andean and Orinoquia regions (Meta and Huila departments) of Colombia. Due to the unique features in the phallic anatomy of the species, it is proposed as a link between the genera Erythromastax and Homeomastax; additionally, the exclusive colour pattern of the species may lead to a new classification of the subfamily.

The purpose of this application, under Article 23.9.3 of the Code, is to conserve the specific name of the dung beetle Onthophagus rugulosus Harold, 1886 (Coleoptera: SCARABAEIDAE), a widespread species from East Asia, by suppressing the senior secondary homonym Elytridium rugulosum Heer, 1870, a fragmentary fossil from the Miocene of Spitsbergen, Norway, that was transferred to Onthophagus in 1977. A replacement name, O. spitsbergeniensis nom. nov., is proposed for the dubious fossil species.

The inventory of dung beetles in Colombia has a relatively long sampling history, represented in local checklist and occasional survey records. However, there is no diagnosis on the completeness and environmental representativeness of Scarabaeinae samplings both at regional and national levels. A study like this is essential to address questions related with the distribution of species as well as their responses to different disturbance scenarios. In this regards and based on the available taxonomic records of Scarabaeinae for the Ecoregion of the Eje Cafetero (Central Western Andes) the present study aims to estimate the reliability and thoroughness of the taxonomic inventories for this group, suggesting additionally potential areas where future samplings should be focused. Scarabaeinae surveys in the Ecoregion comprise 36 years of discontinuous samplings and the number of species increases linearly since 1990s. Nevertheless, the historical sampling covers only 4% of the ecoregion due to the marked spatial and altitudinal aggregation of the records. In addition, it has been detected a high level of uncertainty and taxonomic inconsistency between the local checklists, which reduces the reliability of the regional inventories. It is recommended that future surveys should be focused on inter-Andean valleys and on the eastern slope of Western and Central Cordillera. On the other hand, it is necessary to strengthen the protocols for the proper storage of data, also focusing efforts towards the taxonomic unification of local species checklists.

Information related to specimens of genus Pepsis (Hymenoptera: Pompilidae) kept in the Natural History Museum of the Universidad Pedagógica Nacional (Colombia) are included, which was computerized in Darwin Core Zoorbar ® database. 408 samples of the material, distributed in 25 species, were organized, registered, determined and photographed (222 females and 186 males). The most abundant was Pepsis montezuma (201 specimens, 49,26%), followed by Pepsis grossa (79 samples,19,36%). Regarding the geographic distribution, there are records in 20 departments of which the most represented is Cundinamarca (232 records, 56,86%) with the Municipality Guayabal de Síquima (27 records). Equally P. montezuma was highlighted in the altitudinal distribution (15-2850 m.) and it is followed by Pepsis grossa (20-2650 m.).

Sampling optimization for tropical invertebrates: An example using dung beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeinae) in Venezuela. The development of efficient sampling protocols is an essential prerequisite to evaluate and identify priority conservation areas. There are few protocols for fauna inventory and monitoring in wide geographical scales for the tropics, where the complexity of communities and high biodiversity levels, make the implementation of efficient protocols more difficult. We proposed here a simple strategy to optimize the capture of dung beetles, applied to sampling with baited traps and generalizable to other sampling methods. We analyzed data from eight transects sampled between 2006-2008 with the aim to develop an uniform sampling design, that allows to confidently estimate species richness, abundance and composition at wide geographical scales. We examined four characteristics of any sampling design that affect the effectiveness of the sampling effort: the number of traps, sampling duration, type and proportion of bait, and spatial arrangement of the traps along transects. We used species accumulation curves, rank-abundance plots, indicator species analysis, and multivariate correlograms. We captured 40 337 individuals (115 species/morphospecies of 23 genera). Most species were attracted by both dung and carrion, but two thirds had greater relative abundance in traps baited with human dung. Different aspects of the sampling design influenced each diversity attribute in different ways. To obtain reliable richness estimates, the number of traps was the most important aspect. Accurate abundance estimates were obtained when the sampling period was increased, while the spatial arrangement of traps was determinant to capture the species composition pattern. An optimum sampling strategy for accurate estimates of richness, abundance and diversity should: (1) set 50-70 traps to maximize the number of species detected, (2) get samples during 48-72 hours and set trap groups along the transect to reliably estimate species abundance, (3) set traps in groups of at least 10 traps to suitably record the local species composition, and (4) separate trap groups by a distance greater than 5-10km to avoid spatial autocorrelation. For the evaluation of other sampling protocols we recommend to, first, identify the elements of sampling design that could affect the sampled effort (the number of traps, sampling duration, type and proportion of bait) and their spatial distribution (spatial arrangement of the traps) and then, to evaluate how they affect richness, abundance and species composition estimates. Las fluctuaciones temporales de la diversidad, tanto taxonómica como funcional, permiten evaluar las dinámicas de los ensambles bióticos a diferentes escalas regionales y locales. Esta última, en particular, cuenta con un menor número de investigaciones que aclaren los patrones de dichos ensambles. El objetivo de esta investigación fue determinar las diversidades taxonómica y funcional de escarabajos coprófagos en dos periodos climáticos en un fragmento de bosque andino (escala local). Se utilizó un diseño de 10 trampas replicadas dentro de este ecosistema, cebadas con excremento humano. Las diversidades taxonómica y funcional se evaluaron mediante métricas de diversidad alfa y beta. Se recolectaron 2.199 individuos, correspondientes a 13 especies y nueve géneros. En el periodo de lluvia se registraron 11 especies y el 72 % de individuos, mientras que en el periodo de sequía se hallaron 10 especies y 28 % de individuos. La diversidad beta fue del 57 % (βsor=0,57), con un porcentaje de anidamiento del 33 % (βsim=0,33) y otro de recambio del 24 % (βnes=0,24). Se reportan siete tipos funcionales, donde el grupo de escarabajos paracópridos, de tamaño y patas medianas, fue el mejor representado. La riqueza funcional fue igual para ambos periodos (Fric=4,24), en tanto que la uniformidad y la dispersión funcional fueron menores en el periodo de lluvia (lluvia: FEve=0,29 y FDis=0,59; sequía: FEve=0,34 y FDis=0,75). Se encontró que la variación temporal en los regímenes de lluvias solo tuvo efectos sobre la abundancia, pero no sobre los demás atributos del ensamble de escarabajos coprófagos a nivel local. La congruencia entre las diversidades taxonómica y funcional muestra una complementariedad para entender mejor los patrones de diversidad y tomar mejores decisiones en términos de conservación.

Presentamos 13 especies del género Eurysternus (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Oniticellini) del departamento de Loreto – Perú. Registramos por primera vez para Perú a la especie Eurysternus ventricosus Gill, 1990. Además, proporcionamos fotos de los habitus y aedeagus y mapas de distribución de las especies encontradas en este departamento.

Canthon imitator Brown 1946 se registra por primera vez en el Municipio de Papantla, Veracruz, México. Este es el registro más meridional que se tiene de esta especie. Es un escarabajo estercolero rodador, diurno, abundante en el sitio de colecta de mayo a julio. Las hembras tienen sólo el ovario izquierdo con una ovariola. Ovipositan un solo huevo cada 4 a 5 días en una bola nido piriforme. Los machos tienen dos testículos, cada uno con seis folículos testiculares esféricos. El desarrollo hasta imago dura aproximadamente 30 días como en otras especies de Canthon estudiadas.

The genus Bolboceras Kirby, 1819 (Coleoptera: Geotrupidae: Bolboceratinae: Bolboceratini) currently contains more than 20 species, which are distributed from Lebanon in the Palaearctic region and eastern Africa through Pakistan, India, and Myanmar in the Oriental Region (Král et al. 2006; Krikken 2011, 2013a, 2013b; Nikolajev et al. 2016; Gupta & Chandra 2016a, 2016b). Species groups can be identified using the following characters: the shape of laterally rounded eye canthus with anterior protrusion, presence of interocular ridge, quadrituberculate pronotum, medially marginate pronotal base, elytral stria 1 not reaching the base, mesocoxae separated by a simple (non-hooked) meso-metaventral process, lack of grooves on outer side of last lamella of antennal club and limited sexual dimorphism (Krikken 2013a).

Uno de los grandes problemas que enfrentan los valles geograficos y, en general, las cuencas de los rios, es la continua deforestacion y el cambio de sus coberturas vegetales para el establecimiento de monocultivos y ganaderia extensiva. Para cuantificar estos grados de perturbacion, uno de los grupos utilizados como bioindicadores son los escarabajos coprofagos, importantes en la evaluacion de la intervencion humana y el monitoreo de la biodiversidad. Se muestrearon dos localidades de la vertiente hidrografica del rio Dagua (cordillera occidental, Valle del Cauca), la primera ubicada en el municipio de Restrepo y la segunda en el municipio de Dagua. Resumen: La expansion de la frontera agricola pone en riesgo la biodiversidad. Por lo tanto, existe la necesidad de entender los factores y procesos que influyen en la respuesta de las especies a los cambios a escala del paisaje. En paisajes agricolas, los remanentes de habitat cumplen un papel importante en el sostenimiento de varios taxones, sin embargo, se conoce poco de su valor para los escarabajos coprofagos (Scarabaeinae) a esta escala. The highest number of species was found in the family Dytiscidae followed by Hydrophilidae, Gyrinidae and Noteridae. Here we present the first distribution record for Eurysternus foedus in the Macizo de la Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta province (Magdalena, Colombia) as the result of species inventory in the RNN El Congo, Municipio of Cienaga. Even though this specie is widely distributed it had not been previously collected in any of the recent studies developed in the region. The highest density of organisms collected was the phylum Arthropoda, in which the class Insecta was the one with the highest percentage (65.1%) and the lowest was Adenophorea the phylum Nematoda (0.3%). Dunnett's test showed that no significant differences in diversity (p = 0.5 and 0.4) and density (p = 0.8 and 0.4) between the plantations. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) indicated that only eucalyptus plantation showed a positive correlation between the density of macroinvertebrates and variables such as basal area and diameter at breastheight, and that in all three sites was positively correlated the diversity index of Hill with the contents of K, Ca, Mg, MO and N. We conclude that both plantations have similarly heterogeneity so resembling secondary forest, which was reflected in the diversity and density of soil macroinvertebrates.

Se analizó el espectro trófico de una población del escarabajo rodador Sisyphus schaefferi, una especie en fuerte aumento poblacional en el área de estudio, una serranía del Noroeste de Italia. Las observaciones de campo y un estudio experimental demuestran por primera vez en un Sisyphini la existencia de la micetofagia, principalmente en boletáceos. Se incluyen algunas reflexiones acerca de la relación del cambio climático y el reemplazo de las fuentes alimenticias con el gran incremento demográfico de esta especie.

Presentamos 13 especies del género Eurysternus (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Oniticellini) del departamento de Loreto – Perú. Registramos por primera vez para Perú a la especie Eurysternus ventricosus Gill, 1990. Además, proporcionamos fotos de los habitus y aedeagus y mapas de distribución de las especies encontradas en este departamento.

Creophilus flavipennis (Hope, 1831) is reported from Taiwan island and Lutao Island for the first time. Based on iNaturalist data, new province records of the species from Hong Kong, Macao and Hainan in China are also provided. Finally, the recent records of C. flavipennis in East Asia are briefly discussed.

The study was conducted in Sahaspur, Dehradun (Uttarakhand) in the month of October 2016-March 2017. The present study incorporates Faunistic record of 16 species of scarab beetles belonging to 9 genera, 2 subfamilies (Scarabaeinae and Aphodiinae) and 1 family (Scarabaeidae) of superfamily Scarabaeoidea of order Coleoptera.
