Russian Avant-Garde

Dieser Beitrag untersucht die enge Verbindung zwischen Musik und Mathematik anhand eines neu entwickelten Drei-Achsen-Modells. Das Modell systematisiert die Schnittstellen von Klang & Muster, Rhythmus & Symmetrie sowie Harmonie & Frequenzen und bietet damit einen klaren Rahmen, um historische Entwicklungen von der pythagoreischen Harmonielehre bis zur algorithmischen Komposition der Gegenwart einzuordnen. Die theoretischen Konzepte werden durch ein eigens komponiertes Beispielstück praktisch illustriert, das die mathematischen Strukturen musikalisch erfahrbar macht. Neben der historischen Einbettung und theoretischen Fundierung wird aufgezeigt, wie das Modell in musiktheoretischer Analyse, algorithmischer Musikgenerierung und interdisziplinärer Lehre Anwendung finden kann. Damit leistet die Arbeit einen Beitrag zur vertieften Erforschung der mathematischen Ordnung in der Musik und eröffnet Perspektiven für zukünftige Forschung im Spannungsfeld von Musikwissenschaft, Mathematik und Informatik.

Предпринята попытка реконструкции генезиса концепта «новый советский человек» в русле коммунистической идеологии. Междисциплинарная исследовательская оптика позволяет анализировать развитие концепта «советский человек» на границе
между лингвистикой и историей сквозь призму художественного текста братьев А.Н. и Б.Н. Стругацких. В результате художественный текст рассмотрен здесь как семиотическая модель коммуникации, в которой отправитель текста и его адресат связаны между собой языком повествования в качестве объектов исторического анализа. Тема «нового человека» составляет историософское ядро творчества братьев Стругацких. Уже в ранних произведениях братья Стругацкие сформулировали магистральные характеристики концепта «советского человека» как человека труда (дела),
человека долга (жертвы) и человека науки (просвещения). Этот концепт претерпел в творчестве Стругацких существенную трансформацию. Анализ семиосферы романа «Град обреченный» (1975) показывает, что Стругацким удалось через знаковую систему образов проследить генезис концепта «советского человека», от революционера-разрушителя 1920-х годов к строителю-созидателю 1930-х; от человека-исполнителя («винтика государственной машины») 1940—1950-х годов до человека «развитого социализма» 1960—1970-х. Это, в свою очередь, позволяет обозначить как дефициты концепта «нового советского человека» (в первую очередь, его зависимость от идеологии), так и его вневременную витальность и привлекательность.

Книга «Стихотворения Голубчика-Гостова» впервые вводит в научный оборот полный корпус произведений автора, упоминания о котором еще недавно можно было встретить разве что на страницах библиографических справочников или в аукционных каталогах. Настоящее имя поэта, скрывавшегося под этим затейливым псевдонимом, было установлено лишь в 2021 году. Им оказался Лев Михайлович Гольдёнов -родившийся в 1892 г. в Константинограде Полтавской губернии, он был участником Первой мировой войны, находился в австрийском плену, после освобождения учился в Саратовском и Харьковском университетах, а в начале 1920-х гг. обосновался в Ленинграде, где и прожил всю оставшуюся жизнь. Гольдёнов скончался первой блокадной осенью -21 ноября 1941 г., могила его неизвестна (см.: Большухин/Замятина 2021). В первой половине 1920-х гг. вышли два небольших стихотворных сборника Голубчика-Гостова -«Фольклористы» (1922) и «Темы» (1924), оба они прошли незамеченными. О других литературных произведениях Гольдёнова ничего не известно -возможно, он прекратил свою писательскую деятельность уже в 1920-е гг., или же его неопубликованные тексты погибли во время блокады Ленинграда. Свободная возможность познакомиться с творчеством Голубчика-Гостова у любителей поэзии была и ранее: с 2010 г. электронная копия экземпляра сборника «Фольклористы» из библиотеки Университета Торонто доступна в Интернете 1 . Однако многочисленные «странности» его стихов способны поставить в тупик даже искушенного читателя. Авторская манера Голубчика-Гостова предельно энигматична: его тексты наполнены смысловыми лакунами, строятся на трудноуловимых «приватных» ассоциациях или же тематизируют неизвестные читателю автобиографические реалии. Monumental composition was the bedrock of the art programme of the Monumental Art Section of the Institute for Artistic Culture (Inkhuk) set up by Kandinsky in Moscow. It was duly developed (even though it had already been outlined in writings published in Munich between 1908 and 1912) in a series of publications, the principal one being the Russian edition of the article De la composition scientifique (1918), which appeared in the Der Blaue Reiter almanac. The issue of monumental composition was closely bound up with the conception of theatre as psycho-sensory spectacle, giving the most comprehensive expression to the idea of artistic synaesthesia or concomitant sensation, the total work ( Gesamtkunstwerk). By going beyond the formal restrictions of the respective arts, and combining word, colour and sound with form, movement and tone, theatre thus remained of paramount interest to Kandinsky until the 1930s.

This chapter explores the largely uncharted territory of Soviet plant philosophy, proposing it as a new lens through which to view socialist culture and thought after the October Revolution. It introduces the concept of 'morphological materialism' as a vegetal alternative to the state doctrine of dialectical materialism (diamat), which dominated official philosophy in the Soviet Union from the 1930s onwards. My aim is to sow the first seeds of a new mapping of Soviet philosophy from the point of view of plants, suggesting that this can disrupt the monolithic image of Stalinist dogma and state ideology that still prevails in historiography.

PROLOGUE 11 PROLOGUE This treatise is a product of ten years of research, which focuses on the lost paintings of the leading avant-garde painter of the early twentieth century, Kazimir Severinovich Malevich (1879-1935). It follows their fate from Malevich's last two exhibitions -in Moscow in 1929 and in Kyiv in 1930. It contains discussions of archive documents that pertain to these lost paintings. Here we trace the path of these undocumented lost paintings after the Soviet Ministry of Culture purchased them between the years 1919-1923 and specifically on 50 rediscovered Malevich oil paintings. The history of these lost paintings intertwines with that of other Russian Avant-grade art works and Moscow politics. Since 2009 police forces of France, Germany and Israel have confiscated artworks of Russian avant-garde artists. These sudden police interest in modern art might seem strange for those that are not involved in the complex world of the art market. The following pages will shed light on this puzzle. The French Police Confiscate an exhibition of 180 Exter paintings In the May 2009 issue of The Art Newspaper of London, John Varoli reported that the French police had confiscated an entire exhibition of artworks attributed to the Russian avant-garde artist, Alexandra Exter, based on a complaint that all the 180 items on display were fake. The source of the complaint was the president of the Alexandra Exter Association, Andrei Nakov, who is known for his close relationship with the Russians. Four years later, on June 28, 2013, the CoRM (The International Chamber of Russian Modernism Forum) reported the French court had recognized the authenticity of one painting, and Nakov was ordered to pay damages. A similar but more dramatic report appeared in The Guardian, on July 3, 2013, with the headline: "Multi million-pound international art forgery ring busted, say German police." The report mentions arrests in Wiesbaden and the confiscation of German police confiscate 1000 Russian avant-garde paintings and drawings.

Gehörbildung wird in diesem neuen Studienbuch in einem sehr umfassenden Sinn verstanden, denn Ziel der Darstellung und der Übungen ist es, neben dem Blattlesen auch Gedächtnis und Hörerwartung zu schulen sowie zum »zuhörenden Musizieren« – sei es allein oder in der Gruppe, nach Noten oder improvisierend – zu bewegen und zu befähigen. Ein vernetztes, ganzheitliches Hören wird durch eigenes Singen, Spielen und Improvisieren gestärkt.

Im Fokus steht das Einüben eines kontrapunktischen und harmonischen Vokabulars, das sich an der Musik des langen 18. Jahrhunderts orientiert. Die Methodik lässt sich jedoch auch gut auf andere Epochen übertragen.

Gestützt auf ihre langjährige Lehrtätigkeit an verschiedenen Musikhochschulen sind die beiden Autoren überzeugt, dass dieser neue Zugang einer historisch fundierten Gehörbildung zentrale praxisbezogene Fertigkeiten fördert und eine vertiefte Auseinandersetzung mit der Musik ermöglicht. Mit diesem Ansatz erweist sich das Buch auch als ein idealer Begleiter im Musikstudium.

Эль Лисицкий (1890-1941)-художник, архитектор, конструктор и основоположник отечественного графического дизайна. В настоящее издание вошли его теоретические работы о супрематизме, культуре жилья, методах оформления книги, обустройстве выставочных пространств. Лисицкому были подвластны многие виды искусства-живопись, типографика, архитектура, фотомонтаж. В каждом он добивался значительных успехов и в каждое привносил радикальные изменения, разрабатывал новые приемы и техники, определившие искусство XX века. Создавая чертежи горизонтальных небоскребов, проуны, проекты коммунальных жилых ячеек, Лисицкий стремился преодолеть современную ему художественную традицию и утвердить новую культуру, принципы которой излагал в своих текстах-манифестах.

The book represents the largest collection of Chlebnikov's poetry in Czech translation to date. The translators have translated (with exceptions such as the palindromic poem) all of Chlebnikov's verse from the crucial period of the author's career (1908-1916). The intention was to introduce the Czech reader to the incredible variety of Chlebnikov's poetry, which, far from being limited to linguistic experiments and puns, shows the author's extensive knowledge in such far-flung fields as ornithology and mathematics, and reveals Chlebnikov's rich inner universe and vast range of thought.

Статья посвящена перепрочтению основных текстов, связанных с «авторской теорией» (А.Астрюка, А.Базена, А.Сарриса, Ф.Трюффо и др.). Одной из ключевых статей французской «новой волны» была вышедшая в 1954 г. статья Трюффо «Об одной тенденции во французском кино». В настоящей работе производится попытка прочитать этот текст с точки зрения его неявных историко-политических смыслов: фактически речь идет о послевоенной Франции, переживающей травму коллаборационизма и «превращающей искусство (коллективной) памяти в инструмент (индивидуального) беспамятства. В то, что позволяет (в равной мере и автору, и зрителю) не знать ничего ни о чем, кроме себя».

В современной музыкотерапии различают несколько форм воздействия на человека: рецептивный (или пассивный), активный и интегративный, когда пациент взаимодействует с разными видами искусств. В статье речь идет об интегративной форме воздействия на человека. Материалом служит практика автора в театрах и учебных заведениях (колледж, вуз) в России и США. Ключевые слова: целебные свойства музыки, музыкотерапия, музыкальный арт-проект, вокальные тренинги, звук и психофизический аппарат, звуковое действие, «гармонизация» личности, воображение, интегративная форма музыкотерапии.

The article raises the issue of the functioning of a stable group of characters and examines the manifestation of archetypal themes and images in the form of a structure which the author of the article defines as a group mask. The research reveals the phenomenon of group mask formation based on a mythologem. The mythologem chosen for the study is ‘the Guardians of Earth’.
It is concluded that through various eras and types of art, a group mask is transformed from primary characteristics of characters’ special abilities and functions to specification of psychological traits. A numerical marker loses its connection with the sacred meaning of numbers and becomes a marker of a mythologem and the psychological structure of a group. A mythologem is presented as a tool for identifying and interpreting various images and characters. In light of the mask-face dichotomy, the article touches upon the problem of perception of a face. Many characters without faces are proposed to be considered in line with the psychological data on special perception of faces. The image of the absence of a face in works of art is explored from the perspective of prosopagnosia. The connotations of depicting characters without faces are determined in the context of group mask research. The origins and transformation of a group mask in various eras and types of art are considered against the background of the existence of mythologems in modern audience perception. The article traces the intrusion of universal models in the language of popular culture and the emergence of novelty in the context of repeating universals. / В статье поднимается проблема функционирования устойчивой группы персонажей, особое проявление архетипических тем и образов в виде структуры, которую автор статьи определяет как групповую маску. Выявляется феномен формирования групповой маски на основе мифологемы. Для исследования выбрана мифологема «Хранители Земли».
Делается вывод, что групповая маска в различных эпохах и видах искусств трансформируется от первичной характеристики по особым способностям и функциям персонажей к конкретизации психологических черт. Числовой маркер теряет связь с сакральным смыслом чисел и становится маркером мифологемы и психологической конструкции группы. Мифологема представлена как инструмент отождествления и интерпретации различных образов-персонажей. В свете дихотомии «маска — лицо» в статье затрагивается проблема восприятия лица. Множество персонажей без лица предлагается рассматривать согласно данным психологии по особому восприятию лица. Образ отсутствия лица в произведениях искусства исследуется в ракурсе феномена лицевой слепоты. Коннотации образа персонажей без лица определены в контексте проблемы исследования групповой маски. Истоки формирования и трансформация групповой маски в различных эпохах и видах искусств рассматриваются на фоне бытования мифологем в современном зрительском восприятии, прослеживается то, как универсальные модели входят в язык популярной культуры, как образуется новизна в череде повторяющихся универсалий.

The article examines the textual structure of Old-Serbian business-legal documents in the context of implicit and/or explicit rhetorical conventions that arose when the western-Catholic and eastern-Byzantine diplomatic norms collided.

Against the background of Marinetti's visit to Russia, a review of the articles that deal with it in the Italian press is made. We focus on Zanetti’s article, published in the “Giornale d'Italia” on March 5th, 1914, in which Khlebnikov’s thoughts are effectively summarized despite the evident skepticism of the journalist. We then move on to the article by the Italian futurist Settimelli published in the journal “L’Italia futurista” in March 1917, in which Khlebnikov's ‘prophecy’ on the fall of an empire in 1917 is enthusiastically recalled and interpreted here in an anti-German sense. This is the beginning of the Khlebnikov myth in Italy, a myth, however, which will remain ‘buried’ for several years, until Poggioli first and then Ripellino took it up again and brought it to the attention of the cultured reading public in Italy. This process culminated in Ripellino’s translation of Khlebnikov's poems and his presentation of the poet and of his poetics in 1968. This publication profoundly influenced the reception of Khlebnikov and his myth in Italy.

The article analyses the image of a rock musician in the late Soviet and modern Russian cinema. Having appeared on screen in the mid-80s, a rock musician character type immediately had a cult following. The image represented a hero of the then-new time, a singer of freedom, a bearer of a different, “correct” pro-Western worldview, starting from the appearance and ending with the philosophy of life, and a symbol of disagreement not only with the generation of fathers but also with the then-existing, “wrong” world order in general. A rock musician in the perestroika cinema was a typical rebel character who appeared in the world cinema at the turn of epochs. The author of the article formulates the cultural codes behind the representation of such a character type on screen, traces its transformation, and comes to the conclusion that the meanings behind a rock musician character type are gradually losing their immediate relevance in modern Russian cinema. / В статье анализируется образ рок-музыканта в позднесоветском и современном российском кинематографе. Появившись на экране в середине 1980-х годов, рок-музыкант мгновенно приобретает культовый статус. Это одно из воплощений героя нового времени, певец свободы, носитель иного, «правильного», прозападного мировоззрения, начиная от внешнего вида и заканчивая жизненной философией, символ несогласия не только с поколением отцов, но и в целом с существующим «неправильным» миропорядком. Рок-музыкант в перестроечном кино — типичный герой-бунтарь, появляющийся в мировом кинематографе на сломе эпох. Автор формулирует культурные коды, скрывающиеся за репрезентацией данного персонажа на экране, прослеживает его трансформацию и приходит к выводу, что смыслы, стоящие за образом рок-музыканта, в российском кинематографе постепенно утрачивают свою остроту.

Aside from its obvious influence on 20th century art in general, the Russian Avant-Garde was a precursor to many conceptual trends, not always directly related to our general notion of “Avant-garde”, but more as the fulfilment of its prophecies. This paper explores the legacy of the Russian Avant-garde through the prism of a multisensory study, involving haptics, optics, immersion and participation. Revisiting manifestos of the early 20th century in the context of contemporary theories of art and perception, the paper traces intersections and “dreams come true”. Inter alia, the paper also considers the problem of how to collect non-visual components of art from the viewpoint of contemporary museum practice.

Nikolay Alexeyevich Nekrasov, who had a very important place in the 19th century Russian literature, existed as a poet in the literary scene of his period, apart from his identity as a literary authority and publisher. Despite being an aristocrat, the artist, who grew up with slave peasant children, is closely acquainted with the problems and understanding of slave peasants, who were considered the lowest class of the Russian people. He integrated these experiences with realism, one of the widespread movements of his time, and tried to be the voice of these people who were ignored in their country. When we look at the poet's art of poetry, it will be observed that he breaks this line only in the verses he dedicates to women who are special to him. The heroes of these poems, written in a romantic and pessimistic style close to the old tradition, are three women who are very important to the author. First, we see the poet's mother, who had a bitter fate in the art of poetry and died at a young age. Then, we meet Avdotya Panayeva, a married woman with whom he had an illicit affair for many years. And finally, his wife, Zinaida Nekrosova, continued it. When the poems written about these three women are considered in general, great sadness, darkness, and longing are felt in all the poems he wrote to his mother. The poems dedicated to Panayeva, one of the women he loved, are the panorama of a relationship that continued with ups and downs for many years. Those dedicated to Zinaida were written more positively and lovingly because they coincided with the most painful years of the poet's illness and instilled hope in her.

Ob strani pu{~a literarnosmerno opredeljevanje in se osredinja na Vodnikovo pesnjenje razodetja v njih, ki ga pripravlja poduhovljeno pesnjenje erosa v prvih dveh zbirkah. Pesnjenje v t. i. »novozaveznem ciklu« dose'e vrhunec v liku Jude I{karijota, ki izgubi tradicionalne poteze izdajalca Kristusa in postane, tako kot Kristus, lik razodetne drugosti. The paper deals with a corpus of poems with New-Testament motifs from an unfinished poetry collection by Anton Vodnik, Talitá, kumi, that was published recently in the second volume of his collected works (Zbrana dela). The question of defining the literary trend is left aside and instead the matter of Vodnik's poetry of revelation in the poems, which he prepared through a spiritualized poeticization of eros in the first two collections, is concentrated upon. His poeticization in the »New-Testament cycle« reaches its zenith in the image of Judas Iscariot, who loses the traditional characteristics of Christ's betrayer and becomes, like Christ himself, an image of revelation otherness. Статья посвящена феноменологическому анализу восприятия музыки на материале песен в стиле рок. Структура песни проще, чем структура классического музыкального произведения, но все результаты действительны для любой музыки при соответствующем усложнении. «Слушающий прибор» – компьютерная программа, переводящая звуки в нотную запись – воспринимает отдельные звуки. Но музыкальное сознание понимает музыкальную мысль. Оно группирует звуки в мотивы и фразы. Понятие музыкальной мысли имеет разные трактовки и нуждается в тщательном феноменологическом анализе, исходя из учения Гуссерля о конституировании смысла. Ф. Тэгг вводит понятие «музема» – единица музыкального смысла. Муземы имеют смысл только для понимающего сознания. К муземам разных уровней относятся мотивы и фразы, размер такта, ритм, структура цельного произведения. В мелодии могут встречаться «ключевые места», в которых концентрация музыкальной мысли максимальна. Они конституируются музыкальным сознанием и являются в значительной мере субъективными. Феномен ключевого места не специфичен для музыки, ключевые места встречаются в литературе, в философии. Их появление проливает свет на особенности актов понимания. Понимание музыкального произведения происходит во времени, и это позволяет сознанию разметить отрезок времени, расположить в нем умопостигаемую структуру. Мелодия – это осмысленное целое, которое имеет свою логику развертывания. Она охватывает отрезок времени и превращает его в нечто стационарное. Мелодию можно представить в виде рисунка, в виде схемы. Предмет музыки – свертываемость времени в такие структуры. Интересным примером музыкального восприятия и понимания является психоделический рок. При слушании психоделической музыки конституирующая активность сознания уменьшается, возникает измененное состояние сознания. Горизонт смысла сужается, пропадает протенция. Здесь следует вспомнить понятие «насыщенный феномен», введенное Ж.-Л. Марионом. Насыщенный феномен не допускает конституирования и усвоения. Психоделическая музыка видоизменяет горизонты будущих смыслов. В заключении статьи ставится вопрос о компьютерной музыке: будет ли она иметь для нас смысл? Пока на этот вопрос нет однозначного ответа.

Способ организации музейно-выставочного пространства является важным аспектом, позволяющим направить и отчасти предопределить эстетическую реакцию зрителя. Эстетическое восприятие имеет богатую междисциплинарную историографию – этой проблемой занимались философы, историки искусства, арт-критики и психологи: Э. Гомбрих, М. Блэк, Р. Арнхейм и др. Блестящие наблюдения высказали Н. Серота, а также К. Гровье. В связи с тенденцией принципиальной стилистической разнородности современного искусства, мы приходим к выводу о целесообразности научного кураторства, в основе которого лежит концептуальная идея выставки, подкрепленная традиционной искусствоведческой методологией, способствующая выстраиванию логики повествования. Примечательно, что куратор, оказывая влияние на процесс восприятия экспозиции, становится соавтором эстетического опыта
зрителя.

The way the museum and exhibition space is organized is an important aspect that allows you to direct and, to some extent, determine the aesthetic reaction of the viewer. Aesthetic perception has a rich interdisciplinary historiography – philosophers, art historians, art critics and psychologists have dealt with this problem: E. Gombrich, M. Black, R. Arnheim, etc. Brilliant observations were made by N. Serota, as well as 
K. Grovier. Due to the tendency of the fundamental stylistic heterogeneity of modern art, we come to the conclusion about the expediency of scientific curation, which is based on the conceptual idea of the exhibition, supported by traditional art criticism methodology, contributing to the construction of the logic of the narrative. It is noteworthy that the curator, influencing the process of perception of the exhibition, becomes a co-author of the aesthetic experience of the viewer.

We publish a previously unknown Aleksandr Tufanov’s letter, that reveals the details of the exhibition that was supposed to take place at the Institute of Art History. That letter makes clear that he played a key role in the implementation of this project. A list of exhibits is also provided, allowing to imagine the outlines of the failed exposition.

The article examines the textual structure of Old-Serbian business-legal documents in the context of implicit and/or explicit rhetorical conventions that arose when the western-Catholic and eastern-Byzantine diplomatic norms collided.

Mikhail Epstein (b. 1950) and Vladimir Sharov (1952-2018) became close friends in Moscow in 1980. Epstein emigrated in 1990 to become a professor of cultural studies at Emory University; in 1991 Sharov, trained as a historian of medieval Rus', published the first of his nine novels. With increasing urgency, both writers explored the myth, now backed by military force, that Russia is called to an apocalyptic, salvational global mission. This essay juxtaposes Epstein's quasi-novel The New Sectarianism (1993), with its plea for poor faith or "minimal religion," with the maximalist plots of Sharov's novels, peopled by NKVD informers, homespun visionaries, seekers and priests. When a philosopher writes a novel, or when an historian-turnednovelist formulates a political philosophy, how are we to balance the claims of these competing genres? The final segment discusses a highly antagonistic reading by the sociologist Dina Khapaeva of Sharov's final novel, which suggests that Sharov was emotionally complicit in the horrific events of the Stalinist era. An attempt is made to rebut this reading, and also to locate a way out for all parties that permits novelistic and philosophical art to be moral-but remain art. The essay originated as a paper presented at the 2023 ASEEES Convention, on a panel titled "Contemporary Russian Philosophy: Four Thinkers on Consciousness, Imagination, and Civilizational Crisis." The argument has been filled in but not updated, and its oral intonation retained.

The Museum of Modern Art has collected and exhibited illustrated books from its earliest years. In addition, through the inspiration of its founding director, Alfred H. Barr, Jr., who made the first of three visits to Russia in the winter of 1927-28, a year before the Museum opened in 1929, this institution has built an extraordinary collection of Russian avant-garde art in all mediums. It was, therefore, with excitement and gratitude that the Museum accepted The Judith Rothschild Foundation gift of some 1,100 illustrated books and 100 related works from this seminal period. Considered the finest of its kind in the world, this collection will now be available for future generations to be exhibited and studied in the context of nearly 400 Russian avant-garde works from the Museum's Departments of Painting and Sculpture, Drawings, Photography, Film and Media, Architecture and Design, Prints and Illustrated Books, and the Library. This publication, and the accompanying exhibition, proudly celebrate this momentous gift and also demonstrate to our audience the fundamental importance of the book medium in this moment of historic creativity. The idea for forming this collection of Russian avant-garde books came from Harvey S. Shipley Miller, Trustee of The Judith Rothschild Foundation. Knowing of the interest of Judith Rothschild, and that of her family, in this period, he set out to make a definitive collection with the purpose of donating it to an institution. Formed in an aston ishing burst of activity with the help of Jared Ash, The Judith Rothschild Foundation Curator, this collection is unique in its breadth and depth, and includes all the major books by such masters as Kazimir Malevich, Olga Rozanova, El Lissitzky, and Aleksandr Rodchenko, as well as publications in areas of special interest such as provincial mate rial, children's literature, architecture, and Judaica. In addition to the current exhibition and catalogue, the Museum's plans for this unique collection include a variety of initiatives. The first will be a Web-based catalogue raisonne with animations that display turning pages of the most important volumes. It is further hoped that a program for scholars will be established for collection-based research projects in art history, as well as related fields of literature and graphic design. Seminars for college students and Museum members are also planned to allow for the study of this material in the original rather than through slides. This exhibition and catalogue would not have been possible without the dedication and commitment of its co-organizers: Deborah Wye, Chief Curator of the Department of Prints and Illustrated Books, an ardent proponent of Russian avant-garde printed art, and Margit Rowell, former Chief Curator in the Department of Drawings and Guest Curator for this project, a widely respected scholar of the period. They, along with the team of Jared Ash Nina Gurianova, primary consultant; Gerald Janecek, consultant; Harper Montgomery, Assistant Curator; and the staff of the Department of Prints and Illustrated Books have brought this project to fruition in a remarkably short time with superlative results. On this occasion, I wish to convey my special thanks to Harvey S. Shipley Miller, the originator and tireless supporter of this project and a devoted friend of The Museum of Modern Art. A committed patron of the arts, Mr. Miller has shown his passion as a collector and his infinite imagination and intelligence in compiling this superb collection This exhibition and publication are testament to his vision and creativity.

Since launching a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24th, 2022, Russian authorities have provided several narratives to justify their aggressive actions and war crimes. According to the first, their war is only a response to the actions of the "Nazis"; therefore, the current war is a continuation of the Great Patriotic War in which Russia defeated Hitler. The second asserts the superiority of Russian culture over Ukrainian and explains the attack on Ukraine by the desire to protect the Russian language and culture on Ukrainian territory. Both of these narratives can be categorized as ressentiment, a term coined by Nietzsche that refers to a feeling of hostility towards an individual who is deemed responsible for one's failures or hardships. This reaction involves glorifying an idealized past and vehemently opposing anything associated with the freedom and cultural values of another. Russophone anti-war poetry written after February 24th, both in Russia and abroad, deconstructs these propaganda narratives and offers its own narrative strategy for talking about Russian history, which I term the poetics of "de-ressentiment." This essay analyzes anti-war poems by Russian-speaking poets and identifies the principles and tasks of de-ressentiment in the context of Russia's catastrophic policies. The paper explores how Russian-language anti-war poetry tries to find the right language to discuss the most traumatic topics in Russian history and proposes a total revision of Russian history and culture. This de-ressentiment revision should break free modern Russia's destructive focus on its past that deprives it of any future.

The theoretical framework of this research delves into the complex and multifaceted relationship between music and painting, particularly in the context of synesthetic experiences. The confluence of music and painting has given rise to thought-provoking theories and discussions about the
interconnectedness of these two artistic realms. This article aims to provide a conceptual framework for understanding paintings of music. The article addresses the commonalities and differences in the creative techniques and visual interpretations of Wassily Kandinsky and Sushil Mishra's portrayal of Western and Indian Classical music. Through the comparative analysis of Kandinsky and Mishra's approaches to depicting music in their art, it becomes evident that the intersection between music and painting can lead
to a diverse spectrum of emotional and sensory experiences, engaging the readers in a profound connection to the art forms. The study suggests that these experiences are both for the creators and the audience, making the research more relatable.

Veronika Pfeilschifter provides an in-depth reflection on Ilya Budraitskis’ Dissidents Among Dissidents: Ideology, Politics and the Left in Post-Soviet Russia (Verso Books, 2022), elaborating on how Budraitskis’ study can be positioned in larger debates regarding dissidents and the philosophical underpinnings of political violence.

If I weren't a Jew (with the content that I give this word), I would never have become an artist, or I would have become a very different one. " Thus Chagall concluded his  "Bletlakh" (Leaflets) on Jewish art in , written in Yiddish for Shtrom (Current), a newly founded literary-artistic journal in Moscow whose aim was to unite modernist Yiddish writers in post-Revolutionary Soviet Russia. The short-lived journal (published between  and ) endeavored to reaffirm its contributors' secular Jewish identity in a modernist form. The inclusion of Chagall, who, since his return to Russia from Paris at the eve of World War One, had proved himself a leading artist in combining Jewish particularism with the universal avant-garde, certainly befitted this aim.  Chagall's retrospective attitude towards his life and art as expressed in "Bletlakh" would eventually culminate in his well-known autobiography, My Life, which he had already begun much earlier. According to Franz Meyer, Chagall's biographer and son-in-law, Chagall had begun writing memories of his childhood years as early as , when he left his hometown Vitebsk to study art in Paris. Additional details were added between  and  when Chagall returned to Russia amid the upheaval of World War One. In , at the age of thirty-five and on the verge of leaving his homeland for good, Chagall continued writing, now feeling the necessity of capturing the uniqueness of his life experience, which encompassed major challenges to Russian Jewish life in the first twenty years of the twentieth century: modernization and secularization, struggle and the hope for equality and inclusion, and ensuing disappointments.  Chagall also preserved his memories in art. Thus, in -, sensing the rupture his first departure from home would create, he created a series of crude childlike drawings entitled "Souvenirs" depicting family scenes from Vitebsk, the town of his birth, and from Lyozna, where his grandparents and uncles lived (fig. ). Such scenes were meant to soothe the longing and homesickness he felt while struggling as a young and still-unknown artist in Paris. They also provided ideas for future paintings.  These autobiographical illustrations culminated in a set of twenty etchings Chagall created in  in Berlin, after he had left Russia for good.  These were later included in his memoirs. The strong autobiographical element in Chagall's early art also defines its Jewishness. Chagall's stemming from a Belorussian Jewish family, his active part in the shaping of a new Russian Jewish culture, and his sensitivity to the fate of Jewish lives during the turbulent era he lived through, invites us to view his art through a "Jewish lens. "

ASEES is a refereed journal which publishes scholarly articles, review articles and short reviews on all aspects of Slavonic and East European Studies, in particular, language, literature, history and political science, and also art and social science. Articles should have a maximum length of 8,500 words and review articles 4,000; they should be submitted to the editor electronically, preferably in .doc (Microsoft Word) format. All articles submitted for consideration should conform to the style guidelines set out in the ASEES web page. ASEES replaces Melbourne Slavonic Studies, founded in 1967 by the late Nina Christesen, which ceased publication with Volume 19, 1985. Back issues of most volumes are available for A$20.00 per issue plus GST.

The plot 'Vyborg and cinema' seems to be well studied, but only a few people know that Alexander Mnushkin, one of the greatest and more influential producers in France who was called 'Alexander the Great' by his friends-cinematographers, spent his childhood in Vyborg in the beginning of the 20th century. His family lived in Vyborg for 8 years, and it was in Vyborg where Alexander was admitted to school. However, in 1916 the Mnushkins moved to Petrograd. The article continues the series of the publications called 'Marginalias of Vyborg'.

Članek obravnava vojno in mir kot dve temeljni podobi Tolstojeve povesti Hadži - Murat. Analizira ju skozi prizmo grškega pojma polemos (vojna ), ki obe ti nasprotji obravnava dialoško in celostno, ne pa binarno oz. opozicijsko; polemos razkriva smiselno podobo vojne, ki vključuje mir kot neizogibnega "drugega", ob tem pa je v članku velika pozornost namenjena ideološkim, nacionalnim in resentimentnim (etičnim) utemeljitvam problemov vojne in miru ter zatiranja in upiranja.

The Polish version of the Chapter of the “Lexicon of Central and Eastern European Avant-Gardes,” published by Polish Theatre Institute and Performance Research Books, offers the first comprehensive view of the decentralized history of European historical avant-gardes, featuring special chapters on the Slovenian theatrical avant-garde (including figures like Ferdo Delak, August Černigoj, and publications such as Novi oder and Tank, as well as Slavko Grum and the workers’ theatre): This chapter dedicates to the city of Triest as a nucleus of the historical avant-garde movements, futurism and constructivism.  It explores various aspects of Central European avant-garde theatre in and around Triest in between the two World Wars, including programs, projects, and achievements of the theatrical avant-garde, which faced similar historical threats of marginalization and, in many cases, literal colonization and conquest.

W trzech pierwszych dekadach XX wieku działalność słoweńskich artystów awangardowych była rozproszona między kilka ośrodków (Ljubljana, Novo mesto, Triest i Gorizia) i państw-Austro-Węgry, Słowenię, będącą częścią Jugosławii, i Włochy. W niniejszym rozdziale omawiam przypadek "kosmopolitycznego" miasta Triest, jego specyfikę i wpływ, jaki wywarło na słoweńskiej awangardzie oraz na interakcjach z artystami z sąsiadujących wschodnich ośrodków tj. Gorizii, Ljubljany, Zagrzebia, Novo mesto i Belgradu.

Wystawy Henryka Berlewiego w salonie automobilowym Austro-Daimler oraz grupy Blok w salonie automobilowym Laurin & Klement były pierwszymi manifestacjami konstruktywizmu w Warszawie. Oba pokazy zostały otwarte w marcu 1924 r. i gloryfikowały niedoścignione dzieło kolektywnej organizacji pracy, jakim był samochód. Niniejszy artykuł analizuje znaczenie działań artystycznych warszawskich konstruktywistów wobec zagadnień budowy i produkcji samochodów w kontekście lokalnym i międzynarodowym. Ich wczesne postulaty i eksperymenty w większym stopniu były zorientowane na kwestie produkcji maszyn niż na radykalne przemiany społeczne i rewolucyjne dążenia walczącego proletariatu. Oparcie twórczości na racjonalnym podziale pracy ukazywało niespójne postrzeganie roli artysty wewnątrz grupy Blok zarówno jako twórcy-inżyniera, jak i wytwórcy-robotnika. Wnioski z przeprowadzonej analizy ukazują dzieje Bloku wiodące od fascynacji kwestiami metodycznej organizacji pracy do organizacji przestrzeni dla rezultatów tej pracy.

Аннотация. Статья посвящена анализу текстов пьес А.Н. Островского как исторических источников в рамках репрезентации феномена повседневности. Анализ литературных произведений позволяет реконструировать множественные элементы структуры повседневной жизни столичных и провинциальных городов России второй половины XIX в. В контексте реконструкции структур повседневности, в которых существуют герои пьес «Бесприданница», «Свои люди-сочтемся», «Доходное место», «Гроза», «За чем пойдешь, то и найдешь», широко представлены элементы повседневности, касающиеся семейных ценностей и национальных традиций, культуры питания, отношения к деньгам и бедности, особенности труда и отдыха, времяпрепровождение. А.Н. Островский в своих пьесах рисовал типичные образы своих современников и ту жизнь, частью которой был он сам и с которой соприкасался самым тесным образом в Москве, Петербурге и провинциальных городах. Герои пьес лишены шаблонности, это живые люди, живущие не в воображаемой, а вполне реальной обстановке, говорящие на языке своей социальной группы, имеющие своевременные мысли и рассуждения. Все это позволяет соединить разнообразные элементы, описывающие повседневную жизнь, в целостную конструкцию повседневности пьес драматурга.

V prispevku so obravnavane osnove, procesi in funkcije mitičnih transformacij v pesniškem ciklu Odisej Gregorja Strniše. Doumevanje preteklosti nam da zaznati deridajevsko igro razlik, dvoumnosti, subjekt Strniševe poezije pa odkriva potepuško izkušnjo humanitete kot izkušnjo izven tradicionalnega metafizičnega diferenciranja življenja in smrti. Strniševa nova mitologija omogoča, da se podobe starodavnih svetov ponovno vzpostavijo s pomnoženimi perspektivami, da se to posreduje s pomočjo kompleksne optike spoznanj o preteklosti in da se tako določi izkušnja 20. stoletja. Nov mitični svet Gregorja Strniše predstavlja skrivnostno dimenzijo, v kateri so znaki nevidnega istočasno tudi namigi in skrivajo ne le eksotičen pomen preteklosti, ampak tudi mračno ontološko izhodišče seštevka preteklih dogodkov in zgodb o njih.
