en pleno siglo iv -multa et opulens civitas aevo vetusto, nunc aegena, nunc brevis, nunc ruinarum ager est (Ora Maritima, 265-270)-ha generado, pensamos, una percepción social y académica de una notable decadencia y abandono de la ciudad tardorromana. Y por ello, posiblemente, ha contribuido a desalentar el interés de los investigadores hacia las últimas etapas de la Gades preislámica.

Esta es la primera monografía de conjunto que se publica sobre Gades,
realizada por unos cincuenta investigadores de quince instituciones
públicas y empresas. En clave interdisciplinar, aspira a sintetizar la
relevancia atlántico-mediterránea de Cádiz en la Antigüedad Clásica.
Escrita en clave de alta divulgación, es resultado del evento cultural
Cádiz Romana 2025, promovido por el Ayuntamiento de Cádiz en el
marco del programa Orgullos@s de nuestra Historia, en colaboración

PROBLEMS OF TYPOLOGY AND CHRONOLOGY OF PONTIC AMPHORAE DATED TO THE 3rd – 5th CENTURIES AD FROM THE NORTHERN BLACK SEA REGION


The study is based on Pontic amphorae from complexes of the first half of the 3rd – first half of the 5th centuries, divided into four groups: Heracleian, Sinopean, Bosporan, and Colchian. Typologies by I. B. Zeest, S. Yu. Vnukov, D. Kassab-Tezgör, P. Reynolds, B. Bettger, and the author are used [Zeest, 1960; Vnukov, 2010, 2017; Sazanov, 2022, Сазанов, 2022, 2024; Kassab Tezgör, 2010, 2020; Renolds, 2005]. Contexts are examined chronologically.
First half of the 3rd century. Bosporan amphorae of Zeest types 72, 73, 75, 77, 84, Heracleian C IV D, and Sinopean B Snp I–II are characteristic (Fig. 1. 1–8, 21, 22, 28–2). Amphorae 72, 73, 75, 77, 84 appear in the mid/second half of the 2nd century and are well represented in mid-3rd century contexts. Bosporan amphorae Zeest 84/85 imitated Sinopean forms B Snp I-II [Sazanov, 2022, p. 230, fig. 3].
For the last quarter of the 2nd – mid-3rd centuries, Heracleian amphorae C IV D 1-3 (Fig. 1. 1–8) [Сазанов 2024, pp. 57–62] and Sinopean B Snp I-II (Fig. 1. 21, 22) [Kassab Tezgör, 2010, pp. 125–127, pl. 15; Vnukov, 2010, fig. 2, 9, 11; Vnukov, 2017, p. 107, fig. 5.2, 10, 11] are typical.
Heracleian amphorae C IV D1-3 and red-clay Zeest 84 have the highest frequency in complexes of this period.
Colchian amphorae are represented by type Kх I C 2 (Fig. 1. 37) [Vnukov, 2017, p. 109, fig. 5, 17].
First half of the 4th century. The Heracleian group is represented by a small number of C IV D 4 amphorae, dating to AD 260/270–310/320, and the absolutely dominant narrow-necked light-clay "F" amphorae (C IV F) in this group, generally dating to the early to third quarter of the 4th century, with their main production in the first half of the 4th century (Fig. 1. 9, 10) [Sazanov, 2024, pp. 62, 65, Fig. 13; Sazanov, 2011, pp. 325, 326].
The Sinopean group consists of A Snp I, B Snp I, C Snp I-1, 2 amphorae (Fig. 1. 17–20, 21, 23, 24). C Snp I absolutely dominates, with a general dating from the first to the third quarter of the 4th century, ending in the first third of the 5th century [Sazanov, 2022, p. 136]. The others are represented by incomparably fewer finds.
The Bosporan group is quite representative, including Zeest 72, Zeest 76, Zeest 84, Zeest 96/97 amphorae (Fig. 1. 28, 32–36). The appearance of large Bosporan amphorae Zeest 96–97 is characteristic. For the 4th century, five types of these vessels can be identified, four of which have distinct prototypes in Sinopean amphorae. One type was manufactured according to C Snp I or B Snp I standards (Fig. 1. 33) [Matukina, 2008, Fig. 1, 175; Vnukov, 2010, Fig. 2, 9, 12, 13], the second – B Snp II (Fig. 1. 34) [Matukina, 2008, Fig. 1, 176; Vnukov, 2010, Fig. 2, 11], the third – B Snp III (Fig. 1. 35) [Matukina, 2008, Fig. 4; Vnukov, 2010, Fig. 2, 10]. Only one type with a swollen body, on which the further development of Zeest 96/97 is based, appears to have no parallels in preceding Sinopean amphorae (Fig. 1. 36) [Matukina, 2008, Fig. 2, 3].
Colchian amphorae belong to types Kx I C 2, Kx I C 2-D 1 (Fig. 1. 37, 38) [Vnukov 2017, p. 109, Fig. 5, 17, 18]
Late 4th–early 5th century. The Heracleian group comprises types C IV F and C IV E, which dominated. It dates to the second quarter of the 4th–early 5th century (Fig. 1. 15, 16) [Sazanov, 2011, pp. 325, 326]. Sinopean amphorae include types C Snp I-1, C Snp I-2, and C-Snp II, dating to the second half of the 4th–first half of the 5th century (Fig. 1. 23–26) [Sazanov, 2022, p. 136, Fig. 9, 25]. Apparently, Sinopean production also includes amphora type Reynolds 45, second quarter of the 5th century (Fig. 1. 27) [Reynolds, 2005, fig. 45].
Bosporan production from Panticapaeum and Phanagoria is reflected in Zeest 96/97 amphorae [Gaidekevich, 1934, pp. 33, 84, fig. 44; Kobylina, 1966, fig. 7, 1–5; Sazanov, 1989, p. 47].
Amphorae of type Bottger III.1, late 4th–early 5th century, most likely belong to the production of one of the Pontic centers (Fig. 1. 40) [Bottger 1982, taf. 26, 316, 320].
Colchian amphorae are represented by type Kx I D I (Fig. 1. 39) [Vnukov, 2017, p. 109, fig. 5, 19].
The contexts and materials considered allow for the following datings of amphorae from the 3rd–5th centuries:
Heracleian Group. C IV D 1-3 – last quarter of the 2nd – mid-3rd century; C IV D 4 – AD 260/270–310/320; C IV F – early – third quarter of the 4th century; C IV E – second quarter of the 4th – early 5th century (Fig. 1. 1–16).
Sinopean Group. A Snp I – first half of the 4th century; B Snp I–III – late 2nd – first third of the 4th century; Reynolds 45 – second quarter of the 5th century (Fig. 1. 17–22, 27). Amphorae C Snp I–1 were produced from the early to the third quarter of the 4th century, C Snp I-2 – from the first quarter of the 4th century (after the start of production of C Snp I-1) to the end of the third quarter of the 4th century (Fig. 1. 23, 24). Amphorae C Snp II date to the second half of the 4th – first half of the 5th century (Fig. 1. 25, 26).
Bosporan Group. Zeest 72, Zeest 76, Zeest 84 – second half/late 2nd – first third of the 4th century; Zeest 73 – second half of the 2nd – first half of the 3rd century; Zeest 75 – first half of the 3rd century; Zeest 77 – late 2nd – first half of the 3rd century (Fig. 1. 28–32). Amphorae Zeest 96/97 appear in the early 4th century and continue their development until the second/third quarters of the 6th century (Fig. 1. 33–36).
Colchian Group. Kx I C 2 – late 2nd – first third of the 4th century; Kx I C 2-D 1 – first half of the 4th century; Kx I D 1 – first half/mid-5th – second quarter of the 6th century (Fig. 1. 37–39).
The obtained dates refine existing ideas about the chronology of amphorae from the 3rd–5th centuries

A través de los materiales arqueológicos recuperados durante las distintas campañas de excavación del oppidum ibérico de Cerro Lucena podemos conocer la evolución del consumo del vino por parte de su población y otras características de su alimentación, así como el ajuar relacionado con la misma. El completo estudio de los objetos y restos documentados en el yacimiento lo convierten en un referente para el conocimiento de la cultura ibérica en la zona norte de la Contestania durante el Ibérico Pleno y el proceso de romanización. Gracias a su largo periodo de ocupación podemos conocer los procesos y productos relacionados con la alimentación de sus habitantes y su evolución.

The paper presents an analysis of pottery dated to 4th-9th centuries AD found in a well at Chersonesos (Crimea). Four chronological groups are defined: first half of the 4th, second half of the 4th-early 5th, c. 470-510/520 AD and the mid-third quarter of the 9th century AD. The well probably was originally backfilled in the period between c. 470 and 510/520 AD with the materials of Hellenistic and early Byzantine periods. Small additional backfilling in the middle-third quarter of the 9th century AD was probably caused by ground subsidence. Amphorae and red slip wares disaggregated by these chronological groups are considered. Corrections to traditional chronology of early Byzantine amphorae and red slip wares are proposed.

L'analisi dei contesti tardoantichi dello scavo dell'area del nuovo ospedale di Lucca, in località Arancio, permette di concludere l'itinerario nei paesaggi della campagna lucchese fra IV e V secolo d.C. iniziato quasi quaranta anni prima in località Corte Carletti di Orentano. La tipologia degli insediamenti individuati invita ad esprimere qualche ipotesi sulla struttura dei paesaggi, partando dall'evidenza iconografica – soprattutto di sarcofagi – del III-IV secolo d.C.

El Museo Cerralbo propone una conferencia divulgativa en la que Alejandro Quevedo, investigador del Instituto de Historia del CSIC y especialista en cerámica romana, resolverá estas y otras preguntas utilizando como punto de partida una de las ánforas de la colección del museo (Nº Inv.: 00903), inédita hasta ahora.
A través de una de una conversación participativa con el investigador, los asistentes tendrán la oportunidad de conocer este singular objeto y el porqué de su presencia en la colección del marqués de Cerralbo, así como los métodos científicos que permiten a los investigadores de hoy en día resolver las dudas en torno a este tipo de bienes arqueológicos.

Metal capsules in the shape of tubes with loops on their longer sides have been discovered as pendants in the graves of women and children at the Viminacium necropolises. Larger capsules made of silver and bronze were used as containers to hold rolled-up miniature plates made of silver or gold with inscribed magical messages or symbols (lamellae). If these specimens contained some herb or other organic and mineral substances, they are most comparable to bulla-shaped containers used for similar substances. Unlike bullae, which had a generally accepted shape and survived beyond antiquity, miniature tubular capsules are not only rarer but also chronologically limited. The specimens from Viminacium date to the late 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, when the city experienced its greatest economic prosperity and was a kind of "metropolis" in the central Balkans. The city's significance during this period attracted people from various parts of the Empire, bringing with them their customs, beliefs, rituals, and ceremonies, thus contributing to the expansion of a multicultural community.

The "rediscover" of Plastic vase (Magenta ware) from the wreck TSS4 of Torre Santa Sabina, stoared at the Museum F. Ribezzo in Brindisi, broadens the frame work of knowledge about the original function and the circulation of such objects within the Salento Peninsula in the Late Hellenistic Age. Hypothesis of this work is that they were used as containers for particular liquids distributed not in large amounts but, due to their own dimensions, in small quantities. Therfore beside the most supported theories, such as the containing of fine wine, potions and ointments, it is suggested that these vessels carried aqueous solutions and holy waters used for public and private ceremonies in the practice of rites and cults Egyptianizing or originating in the Eastern-Aegean Mediterranean and generically defined Alexandrian. La "riscoperta" del vaso Plastico (Magenta ware) proveniente dal relitto TSS4 di Torre Santa Sabina, conservato presso il Museo F. Ribezzo di Brindisi, amplia il quadro delle conoscenze sulla funzione originaria e sulla circolazione di tali oggetti all'interno della Penisola Salentina nella tarda età ellenistica. L'ipotesi di questo lavoro è che fossero utilizzati come contenitori per particolari liquidi distribuiti non in grandi quantità ma, a causa delle loro stesse dimensioni, in piccole quantità. Pertanto accanto alle teorie più accreditate, come quella del contenimento di vino pregiato, pozioni e unguenti, si ipotizza che questi vasi contenessero soluzioni acquose e acque sacre utilizzate per cerimonie pubbliche e private nella pratica di riti e culti egiziani o originari dell'Oriente-Mediterraneo egeo e genericamente definito alessandrino.

L'intervento presenta le ricerche condotte nel 2023 e 2024 presso l'insediamento di età romana e tardoantica della Pantirola, svolte nell'ambito della ricerca dottorale dell'autore. Queste hanno preso le mosse dal ritrovamento, durante ricognizioni condotte dal Gruppo Archeologico Sermidese, di due exagia solidi, per la prima volta attestati in un insediamento rurale della pianura padana. In ragione della peculiarità di questa attestazione, si è tentato di comprendere la natura e l'articolazione del sito nel VI secolo attraverso il ricorso ad approcci quali lo studio dei materiali e il ricorso a indagini non invasive e un saggio di scavo.

The Rijksmuseum van Oudheden (RMO, the Dutch National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden) has longstanding ties with archaeologists in Limburg. But this relationship did not begin until some years after the museum’s founding in 1818. That was not only because RMO staff were not yet ready to start work in this area, but also because of the political situation. What is now the Dutch province of Limburg did not definitively become part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands until 1839. Shortly thereafter, in 1840, the first figurative spade was thrust into the Limburg soil, in the provincial capital of Maastricht. It was the start of a special relationship, mostly personal in nature at first but gradually becoming more institutionalised. Assistance came from many quarters, but so did opposition, because many people in Limburg were loath to see important finds leave their beloved province. These two contrary forces have been at work throughout the history of the relationship. Furthermore, periods of intensive interaction alternated with times when the RMO took little interest in the province. This chapter focuses mainly on Provincial Roman archaeology and describes the history of the relationship between the RMO and Limburg, breaking it down into several distinct stages.

The purpose of the current paper is to carry out a morphotype study of the set of loom weights from the Roman site of Iria Flavia (Padrón, A Coruña). Despite the presumable simplicity which is usually linked to this kind of pieces, its study responds, as it is in other productions, to a typological classification based mainly on its geometric shapes. The set presented is testimony to a domestic and textile activity not known in this site until the time of its discovery. As a novelty, the traditional morphological analysis is accompanied by the photogrammetric study of the loom weights, with the aim of providing new data to the research, in addition to promoting the conservation and dissemination of the pieces studied.

The excavations at Stanwick, Northamptonshire, were carried out by Historic England in advance of gravel extraction. Trenching covered over thirty hectares and the resulting assemblage of finds and bioarchaeological material remains the largest archaeological collection from the county. The fieldwork revealed a prehistoric ritual landscape and field systems succeeded by rural settlement dating from the early Iron Age through the Romano-British period. Activity at the villa continued into the fifth century AD. The site produced a nationally significant assemblage of 12 Iron Age and 3,730 Roman coins. This report presents the data, now structured for integration into the future project GIS, and sets outs its potential. It uses studies of selected areas to investigate variation across the site and the changing and evolving patterns of coin loss over time, and discusses wider parallels for the Temenos, constructed over a Bronze Age barrow. The study highlights the potential of these forms of analysis and demonstrate continuity and change within various Landscape Elements defined at the site.

The cults of the ancient period in Illyria are known
and have been widely treated by various authors and
researchers, where one of the is the god of fertility.
He represents the god of male fertility, the fecundity
of nature and abundance. It is widely represented in
reliefs and statues, which are mostly accidental finds. 
His birthplace is Lapsek, a Greek colony. He was
rejected by the Olympian gods, for his physical and
moral ugliness. The data show that in the Hellenistic
period the cult of this god was widespread, and its
popularity even reached its peak in the Roman period.
From the observations and research done, it appears
that in Amantia, a total of seven statues and reliefs of the
goddess of fertility have been discovered. All appear to
be old, with long beards and moustaches, curvaceous,
short-bodied, with wavy hair, and most of them hold
a cornucopia in their left hand and expose their organ
(Fig. 1, 2, 3, 4). The differences between them are in
the facial features, where most of them are not well
preserved or missing the head. All seven are carved in
local limestone, all are worn on the upper body and are
Priapus Ithyphallic. The septums in the back are all
unworked. The territory of Amantia consists of hills,
surrounded by mountains and wetted by the Shushica
and Vjosa rivers. Amantia is historically known for its
developed agricultural character. In this way, there is
a need for a "divine" guardian of gardens, someone
who brings abundance, who is a protector of nature,
protects them from the thief, from the "evil eye". The
one who represented all these attributes was precisely
the god of fertility. In Amantia, the continuous and
uninterrupted trade relations with the Greek colonies,
Italy and beyond have already been documented
through archeological findings. It was through these
trade relations that some of these attributes were
adopted and appropriated, which were undoubtedly
interwoven with those of a similar local deity. It is
worth noting that the figure of the god is presented in
different materials in different places. If we were to
refer to Italy, it is found in bronze and terracotta, while
in the house of the Vetti brothers it is presented in the
form of mural art, where its body size and physical
appearance are distinguished. In Egypt it has been
found carved in limestone and marble. In Marseille it
is documented in wood material and not only, while
in Amantia and South Illyria it is made in limestone,
which means that it was made by a local craftsman.
Referring to other cases discovered in Apolloni and
Dimal, this "little god" appears as a "dwarf". The most
special is presented in the statue discovered near the
stadium of Amantia, where the statue is made in real
size of a dwarf, according to his myth. Through this
study, which brings additional information, the fact
that the god of fertility enjoyed great popularity in
South Illyria is reinforced, but this does not mean that
he was only an Illyrian god. As we discussed above,
he has the features of a local god, where the features
of the Mediterranean god of fertility are also reflected
and combined.
The ancient cults of Illyria, particularly the worship
of a fertility god, have been extensively studied by
various authors and researchers. This deity symbolizes
male fertility, the fecundity of nature, and abundance,
often depicted in reliefs and statues that were primarily
found accidentally. Originating from Lapsek, a Greek
colony, he was shunned by the Olympian gods due to
his perceived physical and moral deficiencies. Evidence
indicates that his cult flourished during the Hellenistic
period, reaching its zenith in the Roman era.
In Amantia, seven statues and reliefs of this fertility
god have been discovered, all of which exhibit
similar characteristics: they are depicted with long

The site of Çuka e Ajtoit is strategically located on an imposing hill overlooking the Pavla and Kalamas valleys a few kilometers from the present Greek-Albanian border. It is the main site of ancient Cestrine, the coastal region of ancient Epirus between Chaonia and Thesprotia. The site, noted since the beginning of the last century, is mainly known as a fortified center of the Hellenistic period, characterized by an imposing wall circuit
reinforcing the natural defenses of the impervious hillside. Since 2021, a new joint project between Sapienza University of Rome and the Albanian Institute of Archaeology has been active at Çuka e Ajtoit, aiming to shed
new light on the history and reconstruction of the site from a diachronic perspective. After systematic surveys during the first campaigns, excavation trenches in significant sectors of the site have been opened since 2022. Prominent among these is the so-called Palace, an imposing extra-urban complex along
the western slopes of the hill. This structure, consisting of multiple rooms and large open courtyards and already investigated by previous excavations, has traditionally been interpreted as a public building, a prytaneion, or a place related to the management of food commodities. Ongoing researches — both the updated survey of the site’s structures and excavations — increasingly delineate instead the complexity of its nature. In particular, 2023 excavations uncovered some stratigraphic contexts related to the abandonment of a Hellenistic nearby place of worship (3rd-mid-2nd century BCE). Based on the material it contained, its amount and characteristics, this deposit seems to be related to a public sacred space, rather than to domestic worship. The corpus of material is notable for the abundant presence of fragments of terracotta figurines, some even intentionally deposited in a cavity in the wall of the investigated structure. They are associated mainly with black-glazed pottery, together with other
ceramic classes (amphorae, coarse and common pottery). The paper focuses on ceramics from this deposit in relation to their specific context of discovery. When considered against the background of the repertoire of the regional Hellenistic pottery, some shapes found in the deposit are noteworthy for being attested elsewhere only in sacred or funerary contexts, or for the specific ritual use they may have had in sacred contexts. Moreover, many fine ware fragments, although attributable to a local production on the basis of their technical features, are distinguished from the regional morphological repertoire by some variants, details, and decorations not otherwise attested. Starting from the analysis of the votive pottery from the deposit found at Çuka e Ajtoit, the paper therefore aims to investigate the hypothesis of a local production specifically intended for sacred contexts, in an attempt to contribute to a better understanding of the material culture of this part of ancient Epirus.

This contribution interrogates the binary frameworks that traditionally underpin the analysis of tableware and
transport amphorae from the Late Hellenistic and Early Roman periods. Particular attention is given to ceramic
artifacts that, contrary to previous assumptions, cannot be confidently attributed to specific production centres,
but instead appear to result from manufacturing practices spread across multiple areas of the Mediterranean. By adopting an intersectional approach inspired by queer theory, the research moves beyond traditional typological
and stylistic classifications, questioning the rigid categories that dominate the study of ancient ceramics. The aim is
to propose new interpretations of ancient commercial networks and production contexts, challenging established
binary structures and opening up the discourse to the complexity and fluidity in the locations and workshops that
produced ceramics in the ancient world.

Production et diffusion d'une céramique culinaire de l'époque hellénistique à l'époque omeyyade (Coll. Mémoires de la Classe des Lettres III, Fouilles d'Apamée de Syrie 2)

The Antikythera shipwreck provides a rare chronological anchor in the history of Greek sculpture. The cargo, a massive haul of more than four-dozen bronze and marble statues, in addition to amphorae and portable luxury goods, was lost at sea c. 70–50 BCE, possibly later, along the north-east coast of the island of Antikythera. Previous research on the sculptural assemblage from the wreck has focused on the style and iconographic heritage of individual statues. This article examines the statuary as a gathered whole to isolate trends in material, size, and subject matter. The results suggest a main setting where some, maybe all, of the statues might have originally been displayed: the gymnasion. The statues were probably obtained through plunder or extortion, not normal commercial activity. The study concludes by considering where the statues might have been set up once they reached their presumed destination in Italy. It is shown that the statues were most appropriate for display in a lavish public building in Rome.

Historically, the Taşköprü Basin often has been understood to be inhabited before the Roman period by recalcitrant moun
tain tribes that were difficult to integrate into expansive states such as the Hittite and Achaemenid Empires. Archaeologi
cal surveys have tended to lend support to this understanding. The Kastamonu Project’s survey in the 1990s documented
centralization in the 2nd millennium BCE upstream of Taşköprü in the tributaries of the Gökırmak at Üyüktepe south of
Kastamonu and at Gavurevleri in the Daday Valley (Fig. 1)1.  Comparison of the ceramic assemblages from both settlements to assemblages from the Hittite heartland in the bend
of the Kızılırmak River and beyond, however, raised the possibility of the abandonment of the Gökırmak Valley during
the period of the Late Hittite Empire (14th – first quarter of 12th cent. BCE) as resistance to central settlements grew.
Archaeological visibility, particularly, the absence of ceramics dating specifically to the late empire as opposed to the
Middle and Late Bronze Ages (MBA 20th – mid-17th and LBA mid-17th – first quarter of 12th cent. BCE) more generally  at both settlements, however, hindered confidence in any conclusions about abandonment2. Similarly, earlier surveys
and the survey of the Pompeiopolis Project had documented several forts dating to the Achaemenid period ringing the
lowlands along the Gökırmak3. Without a central settlement on the river, the pattern of forts could be interpreted as
belonging to competitive tribal leaders in a landscape without an imperial administrative presence. Surprising finds
from the excavations of the urban center of Pompeiopolis on Zımbıllı Tepe and its environs in the summer of 2016,
although still plagued by the visibility of the Hittite Empire archaeologically and the preliminary nature of the research,
have altered our evidence for how the Hittite and Achaemenid Empires affected the settlement pattern of the Taşköprü
Basin and laid the groundwork for Pompey’s refoundation of Zımbıllı Tepe as Pompeiopolis and the subsequent Roman
reorganization of the landscape from riverside to mountaintop. Although Roman imperialism led to centralization at
the Zımbıllı Tepe – Taşköprü town center river crossing, both at this crossing and at its sister, the Aşağıçay confluence
crossing less than 4 km downstream, the Taşköprü Basin had experienced earlier periods of centralization on the banks
of the Gökırmak (Fig. 2).

The paper reports on assemblages of funerary offerings from the graves
in the necropolis of Kepoi, an ancient Greek city on the Taman peninsula. These assemblages contain glass vessels of Mediterranean group I made using the technique of coreforming. Three alabastra, an amphoriskos and an oinochoe come from four graves, two of them (graves 29 and 69) are dated to the second quarter of the 5th century BC, one grave (grave 140) is dated to the turn of the second quarter of the 5th century BC, and one grave (grave 189) is dated to the fourth quarter of the 5th century BC. In two cases the dates of the core-formed vessels based on the typological features perfectly match the chronology of the graves dated using ceramic imports and weaponry; in another two cases the dates have been mutually adjusted within the quarter of the century. All types of core-formed vessels found in Kepoi are known in the cities of the North Pontic region where they were spread to a different extent. The highest concentration of such
vessels has been found in eastern Greece, especially, in Rhodes, where, presumably, the largest centers where such items were produced were located. On the whole, this model of distribution is characteristic of all vessels attributed to Mediterranean group I. It is in Rhodes where workshops specializing in the production of such vessels, including those
from Mediterranean Group I, have been discovered so far.

Проанализирована кандидатская диссертация Л. М. Осипова «Вооружённые силы Римской империи на Черноморье (I–III вв. н. э)». Диссертант, закончивший Императорский Московский университет в 1912 г. и не имевший с тех пор опыта научной работы, спустя 30 лет после окончания университета представил на диспут свою диссертацию. Получившийся труд включал в себя две как бы независимые части. Одна часть отражала представления выпускника дореволюционного университета – была фактографической и не несла отпечатка идеологии. Другая же являлась скорее иллюстрацией выдвинутых в военное время пропагандистских положений, которые предполагали неизбежность поражения фашизма и возвеличивание героического прошлого советского народа. Двойственный характер диссертации объясняется двуэтапностью процесса написания работы, в ходе которой у Л. М. Осипова сменился и научный руководитель, а также началась война.

-Rund zwei Kilometer südlich des modernen S tadtkerns Groß-Geraus im Norden des Hessischen Rieds entstand in der Flur ..Auf Esch" um das Jahr 75 n. Chr. ein römisches Kastell mit einem angrenzenden Lagerdorf. Dieses entwickelte sich bis zum Abzug des Militärs um 115/120 n. Chr. zur größten geschlossenen S iedlung S üdhessens. S ie bestand, in reduziertem Umfang, bis in das 3. Viertel des 3. Jahrhunderts weiter. Wirtschaftliche Grundlage des verkehrsgünstig gelegenen Vicus war zu aller Zeit der Handel und in begrenztem Umfang die Güterproduktion. Das umfangreiche archäozoologische Material gewährt zudem wichtige Einblicke in die S ozial-, Ernährungs-und Landwirtschaftgeschichte einer S iedlung am Rande des römischen Imperiums. Chronologische Entwicklungen zeigen sich dabei vor allem in Bezug auf die Jagdgewohnheiten und die Rinderzucht.
