Remote Access

This chapter describes a procedure for identifying high-level scientific equipment having the potential for remote instrumentation access, as well as the\break capacities of this equipment for integration into next-generation grids. The requirements of the user community for such kind of access are evaluated and analyzed. The information is implemented in a database that should be used as an interface between instrument OWNERS and USERS groups. This product could be considered as a prototype of future large-scale databases that will contain wide-structured information concerning remotely accessed instruments and services integrated into the next-generation grids.

Text clustering divides a set of texts into clusters such that texts within each cluster are similar in content. It may be used to uncover the structure and content of unknown text sets as well as to give new perspectives on familiar ones. The focus of this paper is to experimentally evaluate the quality of clusters obtained using partitional clustering algorithms that employ different clustering schemes. The optimal clustering scheme that gives clusters of better quality is identified for three standard data sets. Also, the ideal clustering scheme that optimizes the I2 criterion function is experimentally identified.

The emergence of new fields is forcing engineering educators to constantly reconsider both the content and means of delivery of modern curricula, which requires the conception, implementation and assessment of innovative pedagogical approaches and technical realizations. Many Internet-based tools are currently being introduced that promise to enhance the e ducational experience of on-campus students and expand the reach of unique educational offerings beyond the local campus. A laboratory approach based on remotely accessible experimental setups was developed and piloted at Stevens. This paper discusses the development of a scalable system architecture for remote experimentation, which enables the interaction of many users with a network of spatially distributed experimental devices. The paper concludes with an outlook on possible directions for future remote laboratory developments based on an assessment of the main advantages and shortcomings of the current system.

This article shares practical experiences in the application of electric heating systems in extrusion, injection molding, drying ovens, and boiler-type heaters. The discussion emphasizes the customization of heating elements, the implementation of digital PID controllers, and the importance of redundant safety protections. The study presents the architecture and selected functional assumptions of Radio System for Monitoring and Acquisition of Data from Traffic Enforcement Cameras (RSMAD). Ultimately, the system will be used for transmission and archiving image data of traffic offenses, but can also perform other duties related to traffic safety. Implementation of the RSMAD system will facilitate, inter alia, issuing the fine process and supervision of the traffic enforcement cameras network on Polish territory. Data transmission will be implemented using the networks based on GSM, UMTS or TETRA systems, and through the Internet. The study also discusses some aspects concerning the structure of RSMAD system security.

Any research institution needs to analyze their research output in terms of journal articles in SCI or SCImago Journal Ranking (SJR) Indicator. It is also essential at the same time to understand the library subscription quality. In this article, an attempt has been made to map the faculty and research scholarly journal publications and the library E-journals subscription. The current year articles publications by the academic staff and research scholars indexed in the SCOPUS database have been analyzed based on the full-text availability. The sources from where the academic staff refer and cite would like to publish their research articles. It is vital from the library point of view to study bibliometric analysis on their users' needs from time to time by understanding the reading and referencing habits. It is effortless to subscribe to more resources, but it is challenging to use them for users' academic purposes. To know the usage pattern and develop a library subscription strategy where > 90% of the library budget was invested in subscribing to E-Journals, and online databases, the usage of these resources matters the most. Gone are the days when traditional methods like subscribe and wait for your user to use these resources. It is imperative to understand what they want instead of bombarding with what we have for them. The methodology used here is straightforward, the SCOPUS Indexed articles published by faculty members and research scholars of the institution were analyzed using full-text availability from the library subscriptions and from open access resources. The majority, 77% of the articles have full-text availability, of which 43% are from library resources and 24% are from Open Access journals. There are 23% of published articles indexed in SCOPUS do not available in full-text for and these sources are not part of the library subscriptions. Out of all types of documents, the majority, 69.70% published in the form of articles. Science Direct is the major source for academic staff to publish their articles, followed by Springer Nature, and the third-highest source of publication is Open Access resources.

This paper deals with the remote access to an Integrated Circuits (ICs) Automated Test Equipment (ATE) for both educational and engineering purposes. This experience was initiated in 1998 in the context of a French network (CNFM) in order to provide a distant control to industrial equipment to academic and industrial people. The actual shared resource is a Verigy V93K System-on-Chip (SoC) tester platform. The cost of such equipment is close to 1 million dollar, without taking into account the maintenance and attached human resources expenses to make it work properly daily. Although the sharing of such equipments seems to be obvious for education, the French experience is quite a unique example in the world. The paper introduces the context of industrial IC testing and justifies the introduction of labs in Electrical Engineering curricula. Practical information regarding IC testing and network setup for remote access are detailed, together with lab contents.

The future power system will integrate widely distributed energy resources (DER) interfaced by power electronics units, which may cause a reduction of the system inertia, resulting in non-compatibility with existing control algorithms and settings. Additional rotational-inertia can be provided to the system if many DER units combined with relative small storage units operate like virtual synchronous generators (VSG). This paper presents the measurement layer and the associated monitoring campaign needed for a VSG design and operation.

Remote system administration is usually performed according to the standard client-server model. However, important security and flexibility limitations, arising from the usage of a predictable access port for such a critical application, prevent a satisfactory trade-off between authentication strength and service availability. We illustrate an alternative solution, based on an additional system placed in between the remote server and its administrator. Our design ensures that the new component's role does not weaken the existing security mechanisms already in place, but it can instead enhance them, and provide a very effective decoupling between a server and its visible management ports.

The OSGi Alliance defines an open, modular, and scalable service delivery platform. The DPWS specification standardizes the process of consuming and exposing Web Services in a lightweight footprint. In our work, we provide a solution for the mutual integration of OSGi and DPWS. The approach adopts the mechanisms of distributed object systems. It employs OSGi-based service proxies and service skeletons.

The European network for Integrated Circuit testing education described in this paper addresses the shortage of skill in mixed-signal production testing by encouraging students at pre-and post-doctoral levels to attend innovative training courses in the field, jointly supported by industry. The objective of the present educational experience is to strengthen given leading educational centers in Europe, in the critical field of mixedsignal testing, with the active support and guidance of industry. The project is an expansion of the successful French experience on engineering test education which allows any distant student to have a remote access to oneand one only -test resource center equipped with up-todate/high-tech testers.

The Advanced Technology Program (ATP) collected a unique source of data from highly innovative firms beginning in 1993. These data follow the OECD's guidelines for collecting innovation data and provide important insights for understanding the innovation process within firms. Although the data are not representative of the population of firms, there is sufficient number of firms in the dataset to test hypotheses and to provide a starting point for calls for innovation metrics. Because of the confidential nature of the data, ATP worked with the National Opinion Research Center (NORC) to create a Data Enclave so that researchers could remotely access the ATP data in a secure environment. To initiate the use of ATP data in the Data Enclave, the ATP program funded researchers to undertake research projects that use ATP data. Other organizations have joined the Data Enclave, including the Department of Agriculture and the Kauffman Foundation.

Many scientists need to provide public visualization and exploration tools for the datasets they create. For instance, the Common Climate Project's (CCP) mission of building a website for sharing climate data required a tool to visualize that data. Unfortunately, although there are web sites that have custom built solutions, there are no widely available simple, Open Source tools for deploying a web application to facilitate exploring time series and spatial components of climate data online. So, as part of a Google Summer of Code Project, we developed an Open Source web based embeddable visualization application that extracts data from NetCDF files and then displays it in a variety of user specified ways. CCPviz has a highly modular architecture to maintain its flexibility because it was designed to handle many different types of data (paleoclimate, proxy, reanalysis, etc), and meant to be embedded in various websites. Data extraction, processing, and visualization are handled separately in an underlying library that relies on NumPy, SciPy, and Matplotlib. The server side code, which is written using the Pyramid web framework, then provides a RESTful interface to this library so that each URL can map to an image and so that the user has flexibility in how the images are generated. The tool also provides a minimal HTML/JavaScript GUI interface so that scientists can embed the viewer in their websites, but even the HTML, CSS, and JavaScript are heavily separated so that the interface can easily be styled to fit within a larger website. The software was developed using standard Open Source software tools on hosted Internet servers, making new code easily and frequently available for review and release. Python was used because the prevalence of Open Source libraries and frameworks for scientific computing, data visualization, and web development greatly simplified integrating the various layers of the project. Python was also used because the diversity of Python software facilitates the incorporation of new features or tools in the same family as CCPviz.

A conception of practical works for teaching design and test of didital sircuits is given. The works cover essential topics in testing and diagnostics field. They are ment for improving the skills of students to be educated for hardware and SoC design in test related topics. Four designed practical works are described. All the training manuals can be accessed over Internet and therefore can be used by students at any time and any place. The works itself are based on the diagnostic software Turbo Tester that was developed at Tallinn Technical University. A brief description of the Turbo Tester is given along with several examples of possible problems it can illustrate and solve.

Induced partial saturation is an innovative soil improvement technique intended to mitigate earthquake-induced liquefaction. Historical records indicate that successive earthquakes may occur in high seismic areas. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of the response of partially saturated soils to sequential ground motions is of great significance for the rational design and execution of this method in engineering practice. In this study, a series of dynamic centrifuge experiments were conducted to investigate the impacts of sequential ground motions on the behavior of partially saturated soils beneath shallow foundations. Two different shallow foundation models with a bearing pressure of 135 kPa and 50 kPa were examined. Three seismic simulations, in order of increasing amplitudes, were sequentially applied to loosely-packed partially saturated sand models prepared with air injection technique. The assessment of the test results indicated that shallow foundations resting on saturated models of loose sand did suffer excessive settlements with each event, producing a large embedment of the foundation. However, much smaller settlements were recorded for partially saturated ground, and the level of the foundation embedment remained limited in this case. The deformation vector fields also indicated that different displacement mechanisms were observed for each successive event.

This paper describes the experiences using remote laboratories for thorough analysis of a thermal system, including disturbances. Remote laboratories for education in subjects of control, is a common resorted method, used by universities. This method is applied to offer a flexible service in schedules so as to obtain greater and better results of available resources. Remote laboratories have been used for controlling physical devices remotely. Furthermore, remote labs have been used for transfer function identification of real equipment. Nevertheless, remote analyses of disturbances have not been done. The aim of this contribution is thereby to apply the experience of remote laboratories in the study of disturbances. Some experiments are carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness in using remote laboratories for complete analysis of a thermal system. Considering the remote access to thermal system, "Sistema de Laboratorios a Distancia" (SLD) was used.

In this paper is presented a Distance Laboratory System (DLS), which is a distance laboratory focused in automatic control study developed in Universidad Central `Marta Abreu' de las Villas. The main objective of this laboratory is to permit the users to learn to adjust predefined controllers and to design their own controllers for testing them later over a set of physical devices through the Internet and to analyze their performance. The targeted controllers (designed by the users) can use S-functions created using C language, permitting the creation of complex controllers in an easy and fast way. The DLS uses MATLAB-Simulink for practice processing and the Real Time Workshop Toolbox (RTW) such as real time kernel. The DLS permits integration of new processes for carrying out controller tests. At present three devices are available: a DC motor and a robot manipulator in Cuba as well as an electropneumatic cylinder in Spain. Since the last year the DLS has been used in identification and control theory undergraduate courses in Universidad `Marta Abreu' de las Villas and Universidad de Cienfuegos in Cuba, as well as in postgraduate courses in Me Âxico in the fields of advances control theory and robot manipulator control.

A new technique is presented that allows an instructor to bring the hardware construction and the laboratory experiments into the classroom environment through the Internet. The technique also provides the students with the opportunity to do their entire design projects, including building the hardware and fully testing and debugging the system all from a web terminal. An experimental unit, called e-Lab, is prototyped and tested for variety of design examples. The present e-Lab consists of a Xilinx SPARTAN-3E FGPA development board interfaced with a laboratory PC through a National Instruments LabView and other I/Os such as RS232 serial port and USB ports. This allows the Lab PC to take over the entire control and monitor the board. Then with the use of Microsoft XP Remote Desktop all control and monitoring done by the Lab PC is transferred to the local PC through the Internet.

As part of a collaboration between the CLS, the University of Western Ontario, IBM and BigBangwidth a beamline remote access system has been demonstrated on the CLS VESPERS beamline and the alft x-ray facilities. This system utilizes web-browsers as a thin client that can be connected to servers at the CLS over conventional Ethernet or User Configuration Light Paths. The RBA system is based on the concept of a Service Oriented Architecture and provides access control, data acquisition, data storage and based visualization. More recently the system has been modified to permit experimental data to be streamed into third party analysis tools such as Quartz Imaging X-one. Remote access technologies encrypt data to enforce policies and ensure protection. Attackers leverage such techniques to launch carefully crafted evasion attacks introducing malware and other unwanted traffic to the internal network. Traditional security controls such as anti-virus software, firewall, and intrusion detection systems (IDS) decrypt network traffic and employ signature and heuristic-based approaches for malware inspection. In the past, machine learning (ML) approaches have been proposed for specific malware detection and traffic type characterization. However, decryption introduces computational overheads and dilutes the privacy goal of encryption. A multidisciplinary science experiment was performed in K-12 classrooms focusing on the interconnection of technology with geology and chemistry. The engagement and passion for science of over eight hundred students across twenty-one classrooms, utilizing a combination of hands-on activities to study the relationships between Earth and space rock studies, followed by a remote access session wherein students remotely employed the use of a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) to validate their findings was investigated. Participants were from predominantly low-income minority communities, with little exposure to the themes and equipment used, despite being freely available resources.  Students indicated greatly increased interest in scientific practices and careers, as well as a better grasp of the content as a result of the lab and remote access coupling format.

This research paper investigates the effectiveness of centralized control systems for managing multiple end-user computers from a single hub. Through qualitative analysis involving eight participants with diverse technical backgrounds, the study evaluates productivity differences between using no centralized remote access system versus implementing solutions such as Windows Server, TeamViewer, Microsoft Quick Assist, and Hyper-V. Using a within-subjects design, participants completed identical tasks across all five conditions while researchers collected data through semi-structured interviews, think-aloud protocols, observation notes, and task completion reflections. Results demonstrate significant productivity improvements with centralized management tools, with Windows Server Remote Access yielding the highest productivity score (13/15), representing a 333% improvement over the baseline condition (3/15). The paper examines how centralized systems reduce downtime through real-time troubleshooting, create consistent user experiences, enhance security compliance, and support remote work capabilities. The methodology employs thematic analysis following Braun and Clarke's sixphase approach to identify key productivity factors. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah merancang sebuah sistem jaringan VPN dengan teknologi Ethernet over MPLS (EoMPLS) pada PT. Nusantara Compnet Integrator guna menghubungkan dua lokasi yaitu Jakarta dan Surabaya. Metode penelitian yang digunakan untuk perancangan ini adalah metode analisa masalah melalui wawancara terhadap pihak perusahaan kemudian melakukan survey dan menganalisa permasalahan untuk mencari sebuah solusi yang tepat, studi literatur, serta melakukan perancangan dan uji coba sistem. Sistem telah diuji secara simulasi dan berfungsi dengan baik yang diharapkan dapat menyelesaikan permasalahan perusahaan tersebut. Dengan sistem yang telah dibuat, kantor pusat di Jakarta dan kantor cabang di Surabaya dapat saling terhubung menjadi satu Local Area Network dan ethernet frame dapat dikirim dari satu lokasi ke lokasi yang lain melewati jaringan MPLS.

Virtual laboratories may mean simulation or remote control. In our case we have implemented a remote control laboratory. It needs different systems in order to be managed efficiently: not only measuring instruments but also switching matrices, web servers, video servers and data bases. For a successful virtual laboratory the users need to be as comfortable as if they were in the real laboratory. A reference model for high performance virtual laboratories is outlined using standards from three fields: OSI levels for interconnecting computers, instrumentation and measurement hardware and software (control drivers) and web server management. A performance improvement in virtual laboratories is introduced using time domain multiplex for user control of the laboratory: different users can access the same instrument at the same time as if they were the only user for that instrument. Finally an implementation of a microwave virtual laboratory is presented.

The rapid growth of cloud computing technologies has presented academic libraries with novel prospects to augment their operational efficiency, resource management, and service delivery. This paper explores the use of cloud computing in academic libraries, emphasizing its advantages, difficulties, and possible long-term effects. The study investigates how cloud-based solutions eliminate the need for onpremises infrastructure, streamline access to digital collections, and promote collaboration between institutions. Academic libraries may now provide scalable storage, improved data security, and remote resource access thanks to cloud computing, which helps to meet the increasing need for virtual learning environments. The research also emphasizes cloud-based library management systems that streamline the cataloging, acquisitions, and circulation procedures, such as integrated library services platforms. Notwithstanding these benefits, the report notes drawbacks such as worries about data privacy reliance on outside service providers and the requirement for personnel to possess the necessary technical abilities. The study concludes with recommendations for overcoming these challenges and optimizing the benefits of cloud adoption in the academic library setting. The findings suggest that while cloud computing offers numerous advantages to academic libraries, careful consideration of data governance and staff training is essential for successful implementation.

There is a widespread consensus that aims to the flexibility of the subjects, both in terms of times and places when and where they are taught as one of the main factors that increase or enhance their appeal for students. The deployment of a new remote access platform tailored to the specific needs of students in a course on digital electronic systems based on microprocessors has enabled them to enjoy greater flexibility by offering them the ability to complete remotely, in a different time and place to the university, the proposed practices (PBL) simultaneously with the lectures. This remarkable improvement, endorsed by the results of a survey among the students, has had a particularly positive impact on the impression students have of the subject, and has contributed significantly to improve its assessment and the participation in it.

The systems of automatic words recognitions are not stopping to evolve and to present significant performances. In this paper, we present a treatment of speech intended to the cochlear prostheses. The technique used for this approach is the subbands speech recognition, the general principle is to split the whole frequency domain into several subbands on which statistical recognizers are independently applied. We also study which information is really used to recognize speakers. Nevertheless, the extent of the calculations is very important and complex in particular to the classification phase. We are interested to the sturdiness of the parameterisation technique cepstral coding and to the classification by the HMMs models.

We are proposing a new remote access system that allows for laboratory experiments to be performed remotely in the classroom or anywhere an internet terminal is available. The system specifically employed is aimed at courses of digital design using FPGA platforms. It is a powerful tool that allows for instruction with experiments and design examples in the classroom and gives students full access to laboratory equipment and an FPGA platform remotely from an internet terminal. Remote work has changed the modern workplace landscape, bringing flexibility and demanding security in remote
access to corporate resources. Apache Guacamole is a clientless remote desktop gateway that responds to this
demand. It provides users with remote access without software installation on the client side. Hence, it is an almost seamless
experience across various devices and platforms, greatly enhancing accessibility and usability for remote
teams. The paper covers various use cases of Apache Guacamole in Remote Work Environments, focusing on security, ease of
deployment, cross-platform support, and scalability. With examples, this paper sheds light on how Apache Guacamole supports
multi-tenancy, collaboration, and strong administrative controls and empowers organizations to overcome some common
challenges encountered with remote work.
