Surgical Treatment in a High-Risk Pulmonary Embolism: Case Report

We present the case of a 35-year-old woman who had a high-risk pulmonary embolism (according to E... more We present the case of a 35-year-old woman who had a high-risk pulmonary embolism (according to ESC risk stratification for pulmonary embolism) after she had undergone a Caesarion section. Postoperatively, she presented with acute left lower limb pain, swelling and erythema. A diagnosis was made of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) of the ilio-femoral and popliteal veins. She was started on anticoagulant therapy, which proved to be inefficient, the patient developing a left calf and thigh oedema and shortness of breath. A CT scan revealed high-risk embolus located in the right atrium and through the tricuspid valve. The decision was made to refer her to a cardiovascular surgeon. During her preoperative evaluation, the patient became hemodynamically unstable and was rushed into the operating room, severely desaturated, bradycardic, without consciousness, with severe hypotension. The paper describes a laboratory board made by the authors to study the power electronic converte... more The paper describes a laboratory board made by the authors to study the power electronic converters whose topology is a simple half bridge structure with power transistors and recovery diodes. The board is conceived to be easily integrated in a reconfigurable laboratory setup and includes a half bridge IGBT module, a double MOS gate driver and a PWM modulator achieved with a microcontroller. Using the microcontroller program it can be changed the PWM control technique, depending on the studied converter type, chopper or single-phase PWM inverter. Also, it can be sets the converter switched frequency, the dead time value of the complementary PWM control signals and can be adjusted the duty ratio of the transistors. The last value can be manually changed with the help of a potentiometer or can be changed via a serial communication line. Based on this facility, more identical boards can be simultaneously used in a control area network (CAN).

Scurtă prezentare a imunoterapiei cu inhibitori PD-1/PD-L1 în cancerul pulmonar fără celulă mică (NSCLC)

Lung cancer, particularly the NSCLC type (non-small-cell histology being more frequent), represen... more Lung cancer, particularly the NSCLC type (non-small-cell histology being more frequent), represents a major health issue due to its high mortality. As a result of the researchers’ efforts to understand the molecular biology of this particular type of cancer, new therapies have emerged, including immunotherapy. In this short review we highlight the main studies that led to the integration of immunotherapy in the first- and second-line therapy of advanced NSCLC in clinical practice. We also present the main combinations of systemic therapy in which immunotherapy was included. We highlighted the combination of immunotherapy and radiotherapy in NSCLC. The conclusion is that immunotherapy has brought an important change in the therapeutic paradigm of non-small-cell lung cancer.

Transcription factors (TFs) recognize specific DNA sequences to control chromatin and transcripti... more Transcription factors (TFs) recognize specific DNA sequences to control chromatin and transcription, forming a complex system that guides expression of the genome. Despite keen interest in understanding how TFs control gene expression, it remains challenging to determine how the precise genomic binding sites of TFs are specified and how TF binding ultimately relates to regulation of transcription. This review considers how TFs are identified and functionally characterized, principally through the lens of a catalog of over 1,600 likely human TFs and binding motifs for two-thirds of them. Major classes of human TFs differ markedly in their evolutionary trajectories and expression patterns, underscoring distinct functions. TFs likewise underlie many different aspects of human physiology, disease, and variation, highlighting the importance of continued effort to understand TF-mediated gene regulation.

Comparison of ChIP-seq Data and a Reference Motif Set for Human KRAB C2H2 Zinc Finger Proteins

KRAB C2H2 zinc finger proteins (KZNFs) are the largest and most diverse family of human transcrip... more KRAB C2H2 zinc finger proteins (KZNFs) are the largest and most diverse family of human transcription factors, likely due to diversifying selection driven by novel endogenous retroelements (EREs), but the vast majority lack binding motifs or functional data. Two recent studies analyzed a majority of the human KZNFs using either ChIP-seq (60 proteins) or ChIP-exo (221 proteins) in the same cell type (HEK293). The ChIP-exo paper did not describe binding motifs, however. Thirty-nine proteins are represented in both studies, enabling the systematic comparison of the data sets presented here. Typically, only a minority of peaks overlap, but the two studies nonetheless display significant similarity in ERE binding for 32/39, and yield highly similar DNA binding motifs for 23 and related motifs for 34 (MoSBAT similarity score > 0.5 and > 0.2, respectively). However, identification of regulatory elements has been limited, as DNA-binding motifs are known for only 71 of the estimated 763 sequence-specific transcription factors (TFs). To address this problem, we performed protein binding microarray experiments on representatives of canonical TF families in C. elegans, obtaining motifs for 129 TFs. Additionally, we predict motifs for many TFs that have DNA-binding domains similar to those already characterized, increasing coverage of binding specificities to 292 C. elegans TFs (∼40%). These data highlight the diversification of binding motifs for the nuclear hormone receptor and C2H2 zinc finger families and reveal unexpected diversity of motifs for T-box and DM families. In particular, the topology and the waveforms of a two-phase DC/DC bidirectional converter with coupled inductances are presented. The currents ripples for two converters sub types, with uncoupled and coupled inductances, were calculated. The mathematical results for these converters were compared to each other and further with the experimental results.

However, for most C2H2-ZF proteins it is unknown whether they even bind DNA or, if they do, to which sequences. Here, by combining data from a modified bacterial one-hybrid system with protein-binding microarray and chromatin immunoprecipitation analyses, we show that natural C2H2-ZFs encoded in the human genome bind DNA both in vitro and in vivo, and we infer the DNA recognition code using DNA-binding data for thousands of natural C2H2-ZF domains. In vivo binding data are generally consistent with our recognition code and indicate that C2H2-ZF proteins recognize more motifs than all other human transcription factors combined. We provide direct evidence that most KRAB-containing C2H2-ZF proteins bind specific endogenous retroelements (EREs), ranging from currently active to ancient families. Analyzing feature consistency using dissimilarity matrices

In this note, we present three methods to discover the most consistent features in the World Atla... more In this note, we present three methods to discover the most consistent features in the World Atlas of Languages Structures (WALS). These methods measure the fit between each individual WALS feature and the overall dataset of all features combined. Features that show a strong fit to the overall dataset are hypothesised to be more central for the structure of human language than those features that show a weak fit. The three techniques we will use are based on (i) Mantel′s congruence test (MANTEL 1967), (ii) the evaluation of feature coherence relative to the overall dataset, and (iii) the comparisons of ranks. All three methods attempt to identify those features that fit best to the dataset in its entirety, though it turns out that they do not identify exactly the same features. Still, we are able to give some indications of the kind of features that appear to be most promising for future research. Finally, we investigate whether such highly consistent features might be suitable to uncover genealogical relationships between languages.

The purpose of the present study was to develop an exercise simulation called BringItOn, which is targeted towards individuals who need to increase their physical activity for health, recovery or rehabilitation. BringItOn is a video-based simulation in which individuals use a Kinect system to capture their movements as they exercise.
