Radical Imagination

A spate of avant-garde apocalypse films emerged towards the end of the twentieth-century in apparent response to the endless cycle of patriarchally conservative counterparts coming out of Hollywood at the time. In fact, such films as Geoff Murphy’s The Quiet Earth (1985, New Zealand), Don McKellar’s Last Night (1998, Canada), Lars von Trier’s Melancholia (2011, Denmark, Sweden, France, Germany), or Bong Joon-Ho’s Snowpiercer (2013, South Korea), to name only a few examples, stage a particularly anarchist-inflected set of apocalyptic themes. The recognition of this proclivity provides an opportunity to add a layer of understanding to their analysis that complements the dominant theoretical lenses through which film scholars have understood them and to explore the wider contexts of their cultural significance. And just as there is a distinct vein of apocalyptic philosophy that runs through an otherwise divergent history of anarchist theory, so too is there a noticeable vein of anarchist philosophy permeating the narratives of such apocalyptic films. My project is to recover lost and/or displaced notions of the apocalypse and put them in the service of developing an anarcho-apocalyptic analytical paradigm for film studies. This analytical vehicle will help to understand and evaluate an unfolding global ideology reflected in any apocalypse cinema that is imbued with anarchist-inflected sentiment and that significantly challenges a now deeply questionable patriarchal state-capitalist status quo.

Contemporary spatial design has evolved beyond mere physical environment arrangement, becoming a complex field where social relations and collective values are reorganized. Existing literature often confines democratic design to participation and governance processes, neglecting its creative and action-oriented capacities. This study aims to overcome this limitation by rethinking democratic spatial design through the concepts of "radical imagination" and "transformative hope," proposing a multilayered normative model. The article synthesizes literature from spatial theory, planning theory, and critical pedagogy to offer an original theoretical framework. Central to the study are radical imagination, which enables envisioning alternatives beyond the boundaries of the existing socio-spatial order, and transformative hope, which translates these imaginings into collective action. Based on these concepts, four fundamental democratic spatial design norms are structured: participation, solidarity, sustainability/accessibility, and common productivity. The article systematically analyzes how these norms, rather than remaining solely at a principled level, operate integrally with the conceptual tools and are translated into observable indicators in spatial practices. The developed model combines the complementary functioning of the norms with theoretical consistency, simultaneously integrates radical imagination and transformative hope into the model, and provides a structure testable through empirical research. In this regard, the study contributes significantly to the literature by emphasizing the creative, action-oriented, and transformative potential of democratic spatial design.

How can a public square become a site of transformation? In Paradoxes of Emancipation: Radical Imagination and Space in Neoliberal Greece, Dimitris Soudias, a political scientist specializing in political sociology and cultural economy, explores the emancipatory potential of everyday practices that emerged in the occupied Syntagma Square in 2011. Engaging deeply with participants’ narratives, he traces the evolution of their perspectives before and throughout the ‘years of crisis’ in Greece. Through careful observation and rich analysis, Soudias reveals both the possibilities and paradoxes of emancipation embedded within neoliberalism. Drawing from his own participation in the occupation of Tahrir Square in Cairo (2011) and driven by a desire to understand ‘the euphoria and hope associated with this experience’ (p. 28), Soudias conceptualizes ‘experience as intersectionally constructed’ (p. 20), seeking both to make sense of it and generate new knowledge. For scholars and practitioners, the book offers a vital resource for understanding how practices can transform subjectivities, suggesting that the extraordinary spatialities produced by contemporary social movements, through radical imagination, constitute terrains for envisioning alternative pathways.

Challenging binary notions of success and failure, the review highlights how the film cultivates radical imaginations by depicting anarchist activists navigating ideological conflicts, protest dynamics, and everyday resistance. However, the review also critiques the film’s limited engagement with gendered resistance, arguing that it reinforces traditional gender roles in activism. Despite these limitations, the documentary opens space for critical reflection and contributes to ongoing discussions on alternative political movements.

And most importantly, how could one activate historical turns and their relevance for the current conditions within topical visual art? In the formalization of the distance inherent in each representation, Pisano specifically notices possibilities to arrive at a temporary, permanently repeating obstruction and liberation of the semiotic triangle of object-representation-subject. From the perspective of art, that could be a temporary claim of space for actualization of the conditions of life. Jeremiah Day's work LA Homicide departs from the website of the same name of the Los Angeles Times. On that site, the newspaper gives an historical account of facts and a statistical survey of the daily victims of street violence in the "global slums" of Los Angeles. Day deploys these historical data as a starting point, as a map and as an epic urban poem. He visits the crime scenes, photographs them, and provides them with handwritten comments. In combination with cinematographic observation, these texts produce a certain connection between brutal, historical reality and the topical Hollywood paradigm, that, resigned in a certain fatal consciousness, no longer believes in the narrative of the problem-solving capacity of human beings. Against this anthropological condition, artists can only place their own body, Day claims: a performative act entirely in line with Hannah Arendt's thought where action is understood as an autonomous activity in public space. Nicoline van Harskamp's project, Yours in Solidarity, demands attention for anarchism as a historical movement. To that end, Van Harskamp analyses and archives correspondences of a late twentieth-century Amsterdam protagonist. Yours in Solidarity consists of an archiving, textual presentation of original quotations articulating various aspects of the once personally experiences and spent moments of micro-politics. In addition, interviews are conducted with actors playing the authors of the letters. From our time dominated by a post-Fordist concept of performance and a neo-liberal context of prioritizing the economic realm, the actors speculate how they would re-think and re-activate an awareness of Hakim Bey's Temporary Autonomous Zone. The convergence of these three different approaches to autonomy (a sanctuary with idiosyncratic laws, an engaged intervention, a disciplining school) enabled the Amsterdam Pavilion to link and match its questions and issues with the knowledgeeconomic and institutional conditions and constituents of art education. It is precisely these three perspectives in their inextricable connection that articulate the institutional preconditions of the academy as a temporary autonomous zone. That is, the academy as an institutional zone no longer comprehending autonomy as an inherent conditio sine qua, but understanding it emphatically as a forced societally constructed possibility leaving space for rejecting the instrumentalizing diktat of efficiency. For example by presenting itself as an experimental, free space for critical research, artistic thinking, and non-conformist production of novel knowledge and alternative perspectives.

This study aimed to evaluate the teaching of patterns to students with
learning disabilities through STEM activities. The study employed a qualitative multiple case design, one of the qualitative research approaches. The participants were three students diagnosed with learning disabilities receiving
fully inclusive education in a third-grade classroom at a public school. The
data were collected through observations, interviews, video recordings, the STEM Skills Rubric, the Product Evaluation Form, achievement tests and analyzed using descriptive statistics and content analysis. The findings revealed
that STEM activities contributed to increased academic achievement among students with learning disabilities. The students could utilize their patterning
skills in mathematics and reflect their knowledge of science in the materials they designed. Additionally, they demonstrated proficiency in fine motor skills related to engineering, such as cutting with scissors and gluing. However, the students needed to improve in mathematical skills such as measurement and alignment and utilizing technology. The analysis of interviews conducted with the students at the end of the implementation indicated that the
students found the activities enjoyable. They reported experiencing the most difficulty while designing and drawing materials but derived the most enjoyment from coloring and creating patterns. The students also stated that they benefited from science, mathematics, engineering, and technology in their designed products. Based on the findings, further studies are recommended on using STEM activities in different mathematical topics or with various disability groups

In the presentation, the author discusses the procedural and organizational implications of the eventual privatization of enforcement services in Croatia and ex-Yugoslavia, arguing that the process of privatization is inevitable, but deserves a well-elaborate systemic approach.

Anthropology is often driven by a desire to improve society by "reducing suffering and improving the human condition" (Sluka and Robben 2007, 5). While this desire is near universal, this humanist impulse has taken on different forms as the discipline developed. The form of social activism in anthropology that we often see today can only be understood in relation to the forms of scholarship (and engagement) that preceded it. Ethnographic engagement has ranged from the desire to improve society through scientific understanding, to the desire to develop knowledge that can be put to use by policy makers, to an understanding of the ethnographer as an actor in their own right who can intervene directly in the field. Each of these ways of understanding the relationship between anthropology and social activism relies on a specific theory of knowledge. As such, as the dominant theory of knowledge in anthropology shifts, so too do the possible roles for the ethnographer as scientist, as witness, or as activist.

Lo puedo sintetizar como un intento por dar una respuesta a cosas latentes en lo político, que luego fueron explotadas en lo real. Es de cierto modo una prueba de que estudiar si tiene un propósito es para comprender interpretativamente la historia.

COVID-19 pandemisi ve buna bağlı gerçekleşen karantinalar, küresel olarak pek çok riskli durumu da açığa çıkarmıştır. Bu nedenle COVID-19 pandemisi, Dünya Sağlık Örgütü (WHO) tarafından küresel bir halk sağlığı krizi olarak ilan edilmiştir. Pandemi önlemleri olarak, okulların uzaktan eğitime geçmesi, sosyal izolasyon ve ev karantinası uygulanması, ergenleri akranlarından, öğretmenlerinden, geniş ailelerinden ve topluluk ağlarından beklenmedik bir biçimde izole etmiştir. Bu durumun sonucu olarak ergenlerin yeni dönemde toplumsal yaşama uyum süreçleri önemli bir konu olarak öne çıkmaktadır. Bu çalışmada, post-pandemik dönemde ergenlerin uyum becerilerini etkileyen faktörlerinin belirlenmesi amaçlanmaktadır. Nitel araştırma desenlerinden fenomenolojik yaklaşım ile yürütülen çalışma kapsamında, 16 ergen ile derinlemesine görüşmeler gerçekleştirilmiştir. Çalışmanın sonuçları, yeni yaşam düzenine uyum, ruh sağlığı ve duygusal uyum, aile içi ilişkiler, arkadaşlık ilişkileri ve eğitim başlıkları altında beş farklı tema altında incelenmiştir. Ergenler, pandemi sırasında yaşadıkları sosyal izolasyonun, sosyal becerilerini olumsuz etkilediğini, okuldan uzak kalma ve belirsizlikler gibi sebeplerin psikolojilerini de olumsuz etkilediğini, pandemi sonrasında, arkadaşlık gruplarında değişiklikler yaşandığını ifade etmişlerdir.

Examines how the political forces around Donald Trump are often interpreted as an external attack on American democracy, and how the dynamism of these attacks is thought to emanate from various sites of white chauvinism. This article argues that such an interpretation is partial. The upsurge associated with “Trumpism” represents a distinctive contestation of an alternative type of white identity, one that has been elemental for a progressive form of neoliberalism. Although the neoliberal construction of white identification is distinctive, and indeed kinder, its material basis rests on a financialized form of social reproduction that promotes white advantage without outright discrimination. Yet, ongoing economic stagnation has unsettled this foundation, opening up possibilities for radicalization from the right. This paper thus reframes the emergence of today’s right authoritarianism as endogenous to the US political system.

Abstract: Egalitarian visions of the future typically portray harmoniously diverse societies, where divisions along racist, economic, and religious lines have been overcome. Such futures are (typically) also curiously free of disabled people. It remains a widespread assumption that a better future will be one in which disability (understood as an error or failure in individual bodies) has been eliminated.
Yet this assumption aligns with eugenics; itself an exercise in science fiction which aimed to manifest a vision of a purer, stronger, white supremacist future by eliminating supposed-inferior and defective strands of the human species. Does eugenics still limit our individual and collective
imagination? And if “all [social]organizing is science fiction” (Imarisha, 2015), how are our movements for social justice in the here and now affected by the distant futures we imagine?

Partimos do território contestado da literatura brasileira contemporânea (Dalcastagnè, 2012), caracterizado por um apagamento histórico de mulheres escritoras, principalmente mulheres negras, para abordar um agravante nessas discussões: a invisibilidade de escritoras trans, travestis e não binárias na contemporaneidade da literatura brasileira. Diante desse problema, o nosso objetivo é cartografar o devir-terra na literatura de ficção visionária de Jota Mombaça (2021). E, para isso, dividimos este artigo em três momentos. No primeiro, apresentamos o conceito “ficção visionária”, da escritora Walidah Imarisha (2016). No segundo, apresentamos o conceito “mundo ordenado”, da escritora Denise Ferreira da Silva (2019). E no terceiro momento, analisamos o movimento de transição à terra, da escritora Jota Mombaça, a partir de dois capítulos do livro "Não vão nos matar agora" (Mombaça, 2021). Essa análise está entrelaçada com o conceito de “devir”, no texto “A literatura e a vida” (Deleuze, 1997). Baseada nessas discussões, a nossa hipótese é que a literatura de ficção visionária de Jota Mombaça anuncia às minorias que virão uma revolução molecular, com vista à descolonização do mundo colonial, capitalista e neoliberal; o fim do mundo como conhecemos.

In our conference platform we stressed that questions about quality and good practices within artistic research must always be decided within the specific forums that this form of research invents for itself in the course of its own development process. The symposium intended to be such a forum. And in order to make the whole thing work, a significant and relevant link between artistic practice and reflection was established through the exhibit that framed the symposium. On show, at the exhibition Talkin' Loud and Sayin' Something! Four Perspectives of Artistic Research, were five participating artists/researchers: Sopawan Boonnimitra, Thai filmmaker, activist, and visual artist who defended an artistic dissertation at the Malmö Art Academy in 2006 with Sarat Maharai as her advisor. Jacqueline Donachie, Scottish artist, with roots in both Glasgow School of Fine Art and IASPIS. Jacqueline has developed research practices in dialogue with natural science and genetics, in a project funded by The Wellcome Trust.

O presente artigo trata do processo de demarcação da Terra Indígena Krῖkati, que se localiza no sul do estado do Maranhão. A partir de discussão sobre os conceitos de terra, território, territorialidade e (des)territorialização, propõe-se refletir sobre os sentidos e consequências da demarcação de uma Terra Indígena, entendida como um movimento que esquadrinha a T/terra segundo a lógica proprietária característica da perspectiva moderno-ocidental. Por meio de uma etnografia de laudos de identificação presentes no processo realizado pela Funai, pode-se acompanhar as ações engendradas pelos documentos para estabilizar as fronteiras e eclipsar a multiplicidade presente na(s) terra(s) indígena(s). Na análise ganha evidência e importância as ações dos índios (sua política) e seus impactos na constituição dessa(s) T/terra(s). Procura-se compreender o que os processos revelam e, portanto, o que eles ocultam sobre a constituição de uma TI, provocando uma reflexão sobre o papel dos antropólogos nos processos de regularização fundiária.

Can the current attitudes toward utopia be described as hollow space in the Blochian sense? The political debate is dominated by apocalyptic imagination which fuels populist movements but ultimately it does not have any emancipatory potential. Contemporary reflection on utopia can be either defined by a outopian attitude that is critical towards the status quo but sees alternative arrangements as no-places or as a contemplative utopia, that recognizes the need for utopian visions but cannot identify any political agency. Activism without utopian mental picture often disintegrates for lack of a unified goal and therefore cannot live up to its transformative potential. Retopia, the fourth attitude towards utopia could refocus the eutopian impulse and counter the apocalyptic imagination with a radical imagination that is based on the encouragement of political action. Politics is a confidence game and action inspired by retopian mental pictures could create a sense of an opening in the There is No Alternative doctrine that dominates the political sphere..

The ability of individuals and groups to identify, assess, and pursue alternative possible futures is an essential component of their ability to deliberately and collectively respond to major sustainability challenges rather than experience unguided or forced change. Deliberately engaging in transformation processes inevitably requires imagination. We refer to imagination for transformations as interdependent cognitive and social processes that create representations of present and possible future states of the world that can inform public deliberation, policy, decision making, and behavior from the individual to the global scale. Permaculture design is a concept that aims at transforming not only agriculture, but also city planning, architecture, development, etc. In short it aims to change human habitats. It is part of a new ecological paradigm that is currently spreading in popularity from the urban gardening movement to various other alternative movements such as the slow movement, sustainable architecture, etc. Permaculture design defines itself as building on systems theory (as formulated in particular by Howard Thomas Odum and Christopher Alexander). However I would like to propose that the afterlife of systems theory as expressed in the concept of permaculture, first developed by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren, should not only be sought in theoretical and analytical discourse. In Brazil, Indigenous peoples have occupied lands (an act they call "retomadas") and/or have demarcated by themselves their traditional territories ("autodemarcações"). Those practices date back to the 1980s and have intensified in a scenario of backlash against Indigenous rights. Besides, many rights violations carried out by the Brazilian State has endangered Indigenous ways of existence and threaten the protection of their territories. Thus, this research aimed to investigate how those practices, which are considered as political strategies of the struggle for rights, can be interpreted in the face of the state law. This article offers a methodological reflection on what it means to practise politically engaged ethnography with contemporary alter-European activists. While politically engaged research has a long history in the social sciences, it continues to present methodological and epistemological challenges to ethnographers who want their work not only to be academically rigorous, but also politically relevant. In this article, I build on scholarship conducted in collaboration with activists and social movements and what has come to be known as 'militant ethnography' in particular. Reflecting on three years of fieldwork with alter-European activists conducted between the UK's vote to leave the EU in 2016 and the European Parliament elections in 2019, this article suggests that engaged knowledge production, here, is as an ongoing process of contestation. The article introduces four conceptual pillars along which these epistemic politics may be negotiated, understanding the knowledges produced as contextual, corporeal, contradictory and collective.

The guiding hypothesis throughout is that this dimension is constitutive of modern social imaginaries. From an analytical point of view, this book's objective is to show that a full understanding of these imaginaries requires characterizing forms of spatiality at work by differentiating their respective statuses. In order for such a proposition to be fully intelligible, there must first be a clarification of its terms and an introduction of the references it is based on. BETWEEN IMAGINARY AND IMAGINATION The social imaginary concept has held a very special place in social science vocabulary since Cornelius Castoriadis' works in the 1970s. At that time, the concept of the imaginary had already made inroads into the theories of existentialist philosophy with Jean-Paul Sartre (1940) in psychoanalysis, and then either discredited by authors such as Jacques Lacan ([1966] 2006) or overestimated by others such as Gilbert Durand (1960) in this context, and in literary studies, particularly in the Francophone world. Castoriadis' works brought about both an extension and a redirection. He did retain from psychoanalysis the idea that the

Puerto Rican politics is rapidly changing, with growing opposition to colonialism reflected at the ballot box, and moments of wider acceptance of confrontational tactics on the streets—including the 2019 Uprising that unseated then-governor Ricardo Rosselló Nevares. For many, the protests seemed to “come out of nowhere”: a new, generational phenomenon, “auto-convened” if not spontaneous. Even historically-minded observers struggle to find significant precedents dating back more than ten years. In contrast, my research among veteran activists reveals a longer trajectory of sustained agitational work around many of the issues voiced during the Uprising. Drawing on my conversations with key members of AgitArte, a Santurce-based radical arts collective founded in Massachusetts in 1997, I show how, during the two decades leading to the Uprising, this and other groups reinvented and mobilized much older radical repertoires to challenge the prevailing emotional habitus. When, in the summer of 2019, the legitimacy of the colonial elite became temporarily unmoored in the wake of disaster and corruption scandals, confrontational tactics and their related emotional registers were immediately available and read as appropriate by many among the disaffected—surfacing seemingly “out of nowhere.”

W HILE THE GENEALOGIES OF proindependence socialism in Puerto Rico-up to the 1970s or so-have been widely studied, in the present it is often treated as a closed tradition. Its heirs in the present-those who most openly continue to embrace its imaginaries-are simply ignored in the media and academic literature or, if considered at all, seen as hopelessly marginal remnants or tragically naive attempts to revive outdated political projects. When unexpected events, such as the 2019 Uprising that unseated the "unincorporated" territory's colonial governor, 1 disturb this picture, they are quickly reincorporated into dominant liberal narratives about an astute people wisely skeptical of utopian dreaming, who are momentarily pushed too far by corrupt leaders, or by the burdens of incomplete (but, presumably, completable) citizenship. In edgier analyses, such rebellions are generally seen as auto-convocado (self-convened) episodes in which radical traditions are framed as backdrop and not much else. 2 Meanwhile, those efforts whose imprint on such processes cannot easily be ignored are celebrated for their newness, creativity, and originality, with little to no

Interconnections is a volume of essays that undertakes an interdisciplinary exploration of the intersections of race and gender as key constituents of American identity and American history. Part of the book series Gender and Race in American History, issued by the University of Rochester Press, this collection aims, in the words of editors Carol Faulkner and Alison M. Parker, to "bridge the gap between well-developed theories of race, gender, and power and the practice of historical research." To begin with, the volume focuses on race and gender identities as simultaneously and mutually constructed and confluent; for this reason, it deliberately "blurs the artificial boundaries between the scholarship of race, gender, and American politics and between the fields of African American history, women's history, and mainstream American history." Secondly, it brings into the study of race and gender empirical historical research, thus moving away from the field of abstract theorizing into study of specific historical contexts that both shape and are shaped by actual gender/race experiences of individuals and groups (from 19 th and 20 th-century historical events such as the westward expansion and the Great Depression, to transgenerational responses to citizenship, marriage, motherhood, and sexuality).

Drawing on immersive ethnographic fieldwork at three events in Scotland, all grounded in ecological sensibilities and focusing respectively on alternative medicine, music and reviving seasonal celebrations, this article illuminates aspects of what we call 'festive commoning'. We ask: how, and to what extent, were commons 'against and beyond' capital produced in these gatherings? We re-read a history of resistance to festive autonomy in this light, as a continuing struggle against capitalist enclosures of time, space, knowledge, history and being in the world. We argue that alternative grassroots gatherings can produce a 'festive commons' that resists such enclosures, including breaking down divisions between self and other, human and non-human beings. Such processes generate collective joy, and enliven the radical imagination. Experiencing festive commons is not only an aspect of the pleasure valued in some radical traditions, but also makes another world possible, even if only a temporary one.

The Zapatista movement that began in Southern Mexico in 1994 continues to offer a sharp break from the common politics of indigenous communities in North America. In order to develop an understanding of this break, this article contrasts the different conceptions of place and citizenship within the Zapatista movement to those within Canadian multiculturalism. This allows one to see the ways in which colonial representation over space work to redirect conceptions of citizenship from place into the hegemonic ordering of the State and capital. Through this exploration the relationships between conceptions of citizenship, representation over space, and colonial hegemony are presented.

In the forthcoming future I do not see any predictable form of subjectivation, of resurrection of consciousness and emancipation: the social civilization is over, the Neoliberal precarization of labor and the media dictatorship have destroyed the cultural antibodies that in the past made resistance possible. As far as I know. But what I know is only what I can see from my limited point of observation. The limitations of knowledge present the only potential for ethical imagination in the present age of catastrophe.

In his seminal piece on the role of imagination in social science research, Bowman (1936) reminded researchers that the purpose of a research report is to "implant pictures or conceptions in the reader's head like those which the investigator has in his" (p. 635) as a reader is unable to directly observe evidence described by researchers. Thus, the research report becomes the "intermediary between the imagery of the writer and that of the reader" (p. 635). The articles in this issue not only do that, they also assist in "awaken[ing], enliven[ing], and convok[ing]" the radical imagination of the reader (Khasnabish & Haiven, 2017, p. 2). On the surface, researchers who operate from their radical imagination are able to imagine social institutions (and life within) not only as they are but how they might be. Furthermore, this type of researcher arrives as a "critical, reflexive agent" and works in solidarity with social movements to build capacity for resilience in the transformative struggle (p. 2). The studies that appear in this issue radically reimagine the ways in which research can reposition people and ideas to create new and more inviting spaces for literacy. In the first article, Tanner relies on narrative scholarship to tell and interpret a story related to his nontraditional literacy pedagogy as a high school teacher. He invites the reader to consider the improvisational nature of his pedagogy that allowed a particular artifact to emerge and analyzes his intra-action with the artifact as a pedagogical event. Using critical Whiteness studies, he examines his administration's reaction to the artifact and encourages the reader to consider the potentialities and pitfalls of teaching "to the unexpected." Brooks's article examines the alternative English spelling practices of Jamilet, a student who is considered to be a long-term English learner. Brooks's work draws on a theoretical framework that integrates a social perspective on spelling with a rejection of idealized conceptions of bilingualism. Brooks encourages the reader to consider Jamilet's alternative spellings as representative of the depth and extent of her knowledge of the English language and to explore the role of raciolinguistic ideologies in the curricularization of English. Sciurba's article explores the ways in which youth in an urban school situated themselves as individuals as well as readers. Her analysis led her to two forms of textual relevance for the youth: empathetic and sympathetic. Sciurba builds upon theories of intersectionality and reader response to argue for the acknowledgment of the multidimensionality of readers' identities and their meaning-making processes as potential spaces for youth empowerment. Moses and Kelly's article examines the ways in which first graders (who were initially positioned as "struggling readers") took up literacy practices to reposition themselves in their classroom as capable, competent readers.
