social movements as culture activists have found themselves bedeviled by audiences' tendency to assimilate their stories to the familiar, no matter what they actually say. This is one way in which activists struggle with the constraints levied by narrative. The other has less to do with narrative's form than with the conventions of its use and evaluation. Modern Americans view stories in diverse, indeed, contradictory ways: as authentic but also deceptive, universal but also idiosyncratic, and normatively powerful but also politically unserious. However, these views are patterned: Concerns about the credibility, generalizability, and value of storytelling are more likely to be triggered by some users and in some contexts rather than others. Narrative's power, in other words, is unevenly distributed. In this sense, culture may curb challenge less through the canonical limits on what kinds of stories can be imagined than through the social conventions regarding when and how stories should be told.

From the streets and squares to social movement studies: What have we learned?

In the editors' introduction they noted how the various mobilizations starting in 2011 raised important questions for social movement scholars. The various articles in this issue have explored the emergence, dynamics, and significance of the social mobilizations, contestations, and confrontations that started with the Arab Spring mobilizations and continue to this day. This concluding article is focused on three main aspects that emerge from the editors' dialogue with the different contributions. The first is the context, beginning with a political-economic account of neoliberalism, the various crises of legitimacy that it has fostered over the last three decades, and the role of new media (ICTs) in engendering these mobilizations, their coordination, and globalization. The second aspect focuses on some of the characteristics of this cycle of contention, mostly the actors and their networks, identities and the new practices of occupying public space. The third and last part represents an attempt to evaluate the general trajectory of these mobilizations over the last two years.

Like Arena, the sociology of social movements is fifty years old. As in social movement theory, the nature, structure, contexts, theoretical conflicts and consequences of social movement activity have been debated continuously in and by Arena. It would be difficult to do justice to the scope and intensity of Arena's intellectual engagement with social movements and the questions provoked by both new and old forms of collective action. Any investigation, by definition, would be partial and highly selective. One could choose the nuclear-disarmament movement, the feminist movement, Indigenous activism, the politics of the green movement or any example of the various nationalist struggles with social movement aims - such as those in East Timor, West Papua and New Caledonia - that Arena has covered or uncovered, often having been at the forefront of debate over the last decades. This essay moves in a slightly different direction. In order to examine key aspects of Arena's impact on our understanding of social movements, my comments will span contributions from the May 1968 events in Paris to the Occupy movement from 2011 on. Given the themes of beginnings and endings running through the publication over the last half a century ('the end of students', 'the end of social movements', 'goodbye to the sixties'), this seems like an apt way forward. My aims are threefold: first, to trace some interpretive shifts in Arena in relation to the emergence of 'the student' as a new revolutionary subject; second, to try to capture something very distinctive about Arena's publications - first 'Arena', the 'Arena Journal and Arena Magazine' - namely their blend of a transnational and an idiosyncratically Australian focus; and, third, to tentatively suggest that, like social movements themselves, Arena produces activist subjects through the processes of writing, interpretation, reading and related forms of cultural radicalism.

In their efforts to create change in the larger society, social movements generally try to influence public opinion, recruit members, and in some way put pressure on politicians or other powerful targets to institute legal and structural changes. In all of this, social movements are embedded in and deeply affected by a wider social, political, cultural, and physical environment that circumscribes their opportunities and strongly influences their actions. While certain aspects and functions of the environment within which social movements operate have been well researched, others have gone virtually unnoticed. In this article, we draw attention to an important component in the environment of a certain subcategory of social movements - a component which we call the scene - that has been severely undertheorized, despite its critical role in these movements' development.

In original essays and interviews, these radical thinkers from across Canada and beyond contemplate the birth of their own radical consciousness and the political and intellectual commitments that animate their activism.

Book review: The Radical Imagination

Alternate routes: a journal for critical social research, 2017

The authors of The Radical Imagination make a promise: to do research on social movements differently. The book is a presentation of " The Radical Imagination Project " which was initiated in 2010 by Max Haiven and Alex Khasnabish " to study, analyze, foment, broadcast and promote the radical ideas that emerge from social movements " 2 , in Halifax, Canada. To go beyond mere academic ethnographic research, the authors organized, in collaboration with the activist groups they were studying, film sessions, public talks and workshops. They also created a website that provides a wealth of information about the activities held during the project. The Radical Imagination Project's main goal was to explore the " radical imagination " (hereafter RI) that moved activists. It must be understood as a driving force in the dynamics of the present political moment. The uniqueness of Haiven and Khasnabish's definition is that they view the RI as a collective process emerging from the activities of the people involved in social movements. For them, activists perform RI; and, in return, RI drives them. It is an aspirational term that encompasses the ability to imagine the world, life and social institutions as they might be. In other words, it is the ability to think how things could be different through narrating where we come from, where we are now, and where we are going. This definition is built upon a theorization of the RI by Castoriadis and Stoezler and Yuval-Davis. Following these thinkers, the RI is " a volcanic substance " that is " constantly in motion under the surface of society " (p.6). It is also " shaped by our experience as embodied subjects " (p.7). Motivated with the will to understand how the RI works, the authors start with three observations: 1) social movements are convocations of the RI: members share a specific view of the world in a radical sense. As social movements are very diverse, the RI is the only aspect that social movements share in common; 2) social movements are animated by the movement of the RI; although all members do not share the same imaginary landscapes, the social movements are driven by tensions, conflicts and dialogues that animate these various " imaginative actors " ; and, 3) the researchers seek to " convoke " the RI. Rather than merely observing it, the researchers assume that their research and their writing are intimate parts of the way social movements reproduce themselves (p.8). 1 Sophie Del Fa is a PhD student in communication at University of Quebec in Montréal. The Power of Morality in Movements: Civic Engagement in Climate Justice, Human Rights, and Democracy, 2022

Adding to the growing literature on social movements as knowledge and theory creators, this chapter wants more social movement research to focus on the content of the political theories created by social movements, as an outcome of their morality. This chapter argues that prefigurative social movements create political theory through the interplay of their internal and external communication, their organization, and in their discussions of how and why to change the world: They are prefiguring political theory through their cognitive praxis. The chapter demonstrates how the literature on prefigurative social movements and Ron Jamison and Andrew Eyerman's concept of cognitive praxis, combined with a decolonial feminist approach to knowledge and theory, provides space for the political theory of social movements within social movement literature. This theory is inherently political as it is aimed to be a (temporary) guide toward the kind of world the movements want to see and argues why the world should look like that. The chapter briefly outlines how a Cartesian approach to science prevents us from viewing theory based on lived experience as theory, even though all theory is based on lived experience, and thereby explains why we have not taken the knowledge and theory created by social movements seriously for so long. To recognize social movements as political actors, we need to engage with the concepts, policy proposals, critiques, or new institutions that they are creating, and not only the mechanics around creating them. Consequently, we need to recognize social movements as the authors of the knowledge and theory they create and not take credit for "discovering" it. Lastly, from a decolonial approach, we should recognize that social movement research is relational and that the research process should involve the social movements themselves to make sure they also benefit from it, and view them as colleagues who are sharing their knowledge with us. Moving away from the more Cartesian view of science requires a decolonization of the entire research process, and in particular rethinking what this means in terms of authorship, ownership, and credit.

    The ability of individuals and groups to identify, assess, and pursue alternative possible futures is an essential component of their ability to deliberately and collectively respond to major sustainability challenges rather than experience unguided or forced change. Deliberately engaging in transformation processes inevitably requires imagination. We refer to imagination for transformations as interdependent cognitive and social processes that create representations of present and possible future states of the world that can inform public deliberation, policy, decision making, and behavior from the individual to the global scale. We contend that imagination is an essential capacity for securing ecological, social, economic, and cultural well-being in times of rapid and often unpredictable global change.     “I Have Been Born, Raised and Lived My Whole Life Here” – Perpetually on the Move While Remaining Still

    This article explores the story of Einar, a Faroese man who always lived within a 500-meters radius on the island of Suðuroy, who never felt “stuck” or “immobile” in the literal sense of the word. Studies have shown that staying is a process, as much as mobility; yet while mobility studies mainly show that imagination is an incentive to move, we argue that imagination may also actively support staying. Combining sociocultural psychology with mobility studies, we propose to explore the entanglement of symbolic mobility (a form of imagination) and various forms of geographical (im)mobility. Based on ethnographic fieldwork and hours of conversation, we present the case study of Einar’s life on his island. We follow the sociogenetic development of the island, and the expansion and contraction of the imaginative horizon over time.     Facing the rising sun: Political imagination in Black adolescents’ sociopolitical development

    Black adolescents occupy one of the most precarious and marginalized social locations of society, yet they remain vigilant against oppression. Indeed, Black youth have a vast history of political action and activism around domestic and global issues. Existing scholarship frequently examines the sociocultural and cognitive factors associated with Black adolescents’ political and civic engagement and related outcomes. Lost in these interrogations is an examination of the psychological processes that undergird adolescents’ sociopolitical visions. To address this gap, this conceptual analysis examines political imagination and its role in Black adolescents’ sociopolitical development. Political imagination is the cognitive space and process where people consciously distance the present moment to engage, explore, examine, and (de)construct sociopolitical worlds or realities.
