L'article invente en effet une procédure oraculaire en Gaule romaine sur la base d'une lecture toujours orientée, souvent forcée et parfois gravement erronée des sources disponibles. Tenter de retrouver des procédures coutumières dans l'empire romain est une démarche légitime, elle nécessite cependant, pour fournir des résultats convaincants, une prudence et une acribie scientifique 2 que nous ne retrouvons pas dans son article. Il serait possible de reprendre point par point, voire ligne à ligne, le texte en question pour en relever et corriger les nombreuses erreurs de méthode et les erreurs factuelles. The following thesis belongs in the field of philological studies with a focus on the Irish language, particularly that of the 1200-1400s and the text known as Agallamh na Senórach. This is a thirteenth-century prosimetrical work containing a number of larger poems demonstrated by other scholars to be extracted from external sources rather than written by the author of the main text. It has also been stated, as is discussed in detail in this thesis, that the smaller, single-stanza poems were compositions of the scribe of the prose. In light of this knowledge, this thesis shall observe the orthography, language usage and context of transcribed episodes from the earliest two manuscripts with the aim of establishing the relationship between the prose and small poems found in selected episodes of the work. Transcriptions and translations of the poems are provided by the author of this thesis and these will be used to discuss the possible origins of the poetry through a detailed analysis. This in turn has implications for the construction and purpose of the text itself within the corpus of Middle Irish literature, opening up numerous questions as to the reasons behind the composition of the text in the manner that it appears to have been created. Where this is a preliminary work on the topic, it aims at forming a base upon which further related work may build and discuss the tradition in more detail. i

Et parce que germanité est encore souvent associée à barbarité, le rituel est classé comme preuve irrationnelle. L'étude des defixiones permet de reconsidérer la question. Parce que le chaudron était chez les anciens Celtes le réceptacle de la vérité, il reçut dès le II e siècle ap. J.-C. des applications judiciaires dans l'île de Bretagne. S'était développée une procédure alternative à celle du gouverneur, des procès conduits dans les temples par lesquels était sollicitée la justice du dieu. Le chaudron opérait alors comme révélateur du verdict du dieu. Des temples, le rituel passa ensuite dans l'armée. Le chaudron fut intégré à la procédure conduite dans le cadre de procès mixte opposant un provincial à un déditice barbare. Mais dans le contexte politique de l'Empire absolu, le chaudron devint une épreuve, un équivalent à la torture qui permettait de contrôler l'accusation. C'est donc dans l'Empire que prit naissance l'ordalie du chaudron, que s'organisa une rencontre des traditions romaine et coutumière autour de l'idée de vérité. When we mention trial by cauldron by the name of ordeal, we already assess its Germanic roots. Because Germanic is still often associated to Barbaric, ritual is classified as an irrational proof. The question can be renewed by the study of defixiones. For the ancient Celtic populations, cauldron was the tool of Truth and for this reason, as early as the Second Century, it had judicial applications in Roman Britain. An alternative justice allowed trials in temples by which the justice of Gods was asked. for The cauldron allowed God's verdict to be revealed. From temples, ritual switched to armies. The cauldron took place in the procedure used for mixed trials, cases between provincials and barbarian soldiers. But in the Late Empire, the cauldron became a test, a sort of torture by which the accusation was investigated. In addition, it is thought that the Genesis of the ordeal of cauldron began in the Empire. Around the idea of Truth, Roman tradition and Barbarian custom was combined.

The oppositional, yet often complementary, nature of the concepts of 'myth' and 'history' is explored in this expansive volume, which presents articles from prominent scholars in both medieval Celtic and Scandinavian studies. The collection's main aim is to offer new perspectives that challenge widely-held, entrenched views on mythological literature, hagiography, pseudohistories, and archaeology. The authors employ a wide range of innovative approaches to their respective topics, utilizing a number of the most current methodologies in comparative mythology, archaeology, political history, cosmology, and postmodern literary theory to achieve vibrant new insights into what might, at first glance, appear to be long-settled debates or oncevibrant discussions grown moribund through long neglect. The volume begins with editor Emily Lyle's introduction, which first addresses the relationship between myth and history as similar concepts that both concern information networks, but differ principally in their varying claims to fact and fiction. She goes on to compare the battle between Lug and Balor in the well-known medieval Irish text Cath Maige Tuired 'The [second] battle of Mag Tuired' and that of the fight between Thor and the giant Geirrod in Snorri's Edda. Along with providing a wealth of other comparative evidence, she proposes a cosmological approach to medieval narrative that reveals an older stratum of mythological elements undergirding the more explicitly Christian character of the medieval texts in question. The articles in the volume are arranged in two main categories under the headings 'Celtic tradition' and 'Scandinavian tradition'. The Viking invasion appears to function implicitly as the bridge between these related narrative traditions. The Viking connection is further suggested in the historical background to the first four articles in the Celtic section, which present different critical approaches to Cath Maige Tuired (hereafter CMT), a work that has been argued here and elsewhere to reflect the struggle between these two peoples within a mythological context. This paper explores the division of compensation in incidents involving fools found in the early Irish legal corpus, focusing mostly on two passages found in Bretha Éitgid.

This article introduces Corpus PalaeoHibernicum (CorPH), a corpus currently consisting of 78 texts in Early Irish (c. 7th–10th cent.) created by the ERC-funded Chronologicon Hibernicum (ChronHib) project by bringing together pre-existing lexical and syntactic databases and adding further crucial texts from the period. In addition to being annotated for POS, morphological and syntactic information, another layer of annotation has been developed for CorPH – ‘Variation Tagging’, i.e. a tagset that numerically encodes synchronic language variation during the Early Irish period, thus allowing for much improved research on the chronological variation among the material. Another new pillar of studying linguistic variation is Bayesian Language Variation Analysis (BLaVA), in order to address the challenge that “not-so-big data” poses to statistical corpus methods. Instead of reflecting feature frequencies, BLaVA models language variation as probabilities of variation.

This paper introduces the ongoing ERC-funded project Chronologicon Hibernicum, which studies the diachronic developments of the Irish language between c. 550-950, and aims at refining the absolute chronology of these developments. It presents firstly the project organization, its subject matter and objective, then gives an overview of the potentials and challenges in studying the Early Irish language. The project combines historical linguistic analysis, corpus linguistic methods and Bayesian statistic tools. Finally the paper explains the impact of this project in preserving the Irish cultural heritage and the lessons learned in the first three years.

Rekdal concentrates on an important honour motive in literature: how honour and shame are connected to the human face and bodily descriptions. Rekdal interprets the tale as an exposition of the meaning and implications of honour-price: The fact that the honour price of a person refers to a word for face underscores how central both face and façade are to honour and to shame; a king whose face is tarnished is no longer fit to rule his kingdom.

The paper attempts to compare the status of palatalization of consonants in Modern Irish and Polish within the phonological and morphological systems of the two languages. Irish and Polish have been selected from the Celtic and Slavic groups due to the fact that both have palatalized consonants. One function, which is connected with the palatalized / non-palatalized distinction is expressing lexical contrast, e.g. Irish cúis [ku:ʃ] ‘reason’ vs. ciumhais [kʲu:ʃ] ‘edge’ and Polish beli [beli] ‘roll, Gen.sg.’ vs. bieli [bʲeli] ‘whiteness, Gen.sg.’. Phonologically speaking, the term ‘palatalization’ is rather broad and ambiguous, as it subsumes two quite disparate linguistic situations. In the many social hierarchies of early Irish law, the word ollam (< PC *al-isamos) is often used to describe the position of ‘first’, and applies also to the hierarchy of kings. While in Old Irish the position of ‘(institutional) second, heir’ is expressed by ánṡruth and tánaise, Middle Welsh preserves the word eil ‘second, heir’ (< PC *al-yos), etymologically connected to OI ollam. The same meaning and etymology can be found in Lat. altellus (< *al-ter(o)-(e)lo-s), which was the epithet of Romulus as ‘second’ of Titus Tatius. Apparently, among the many words used in the Indo-European languages to name the ‘second after the king’, the words formed on PIE *h2el- are an Italo-Celtic isogloss.

that the figure known as the ‘Gaulish Mercury ’ and the later Germanic figure of Odin (and his cognates) not only have a common ancestry, but that the latter may have been in origin the former.1 While it has generally been accepted that Julius Caesar’s description of this ‘Gaulish Mercury’2 is probably the figure known as Lugus in continental inscriptions, cognate to Lug in Ireland and Lleu as well as Llewellys in Wales (Carey 2002, 99-126; Koch 1991, 25), and keeping in mind Bernhard Maier’s caveats on the matter (Maier 1996, 127-135), I would like to suggest that perhaps Lugus is one among many possibilities—both identified and unknown—for a deity with some of the characteristics of Caesar’s ‘Gaulish Mercury’. An exploration of several of the above-mentioned figures is necessary before proceeding further into this analysis. A handful of direct references to the existence of Pelagianism in the British church in the fifth century, another reference to Pelagianism in the Irish church in the seventh, and the use of Pelagius' works (one work in particular, often cited under his own name by Irish writers) have all raised the suspicion that from the fifth century on there may have been a distinctive British and Irish theological tradition, one of whose characteristics was that it was shaped by Pelagianism. The idea has been debated until recently in articles rather than in full-length monographs. Some authors have concluded that there was no commitment to Pelagian theology in Ireland, and no long-term serious dalliance with Pelagianism in Britain either, apart from whatever was going on in that short-lived episode in Britain when Germanus was sent (perhaps twice) to sort out an allegedly Pelagian church, or a Pelagian element in the British church. J.F. Kelly, for example, having studied the use of Pelagius' writings in Hiberno-Latin literature, and in continental writings with an Irish link, concluded: Available evidence links the Irish somehow to every known use of Pelagius by name in the early Middle Ages and to considerable anonymous use as well. There are a number of ways to explain this phenomenon. One way, however, not to explain it is as a Pelagian party or movement in the Irish church. Most of the Irish use of Pelagius was selective and for explication of certain passages. Nowhere was Pelagius used to exclusion of orthodox Fathers, especially not to his adversaries Augustine and Jerome. His use simply does not reflect Pelagian attitudes. 2 Kelly pointed out that all the known Irish uses of Pelagius' writings are those taken from his Expositiones XIII epistolarum Pauli, which contain only one seriously 'Pelagian' comment, that on Romans 5:15, which is not used by the Irish writers except once where it is cited and highlighted as erroneous: 'this is an answer to the lies of the heretics.' 3 In other words, though the Irish were happy to use Pelagius' commentary on the Pauline epistles, there is no evidence that they adopted Pelagian theology. Indeed the way they used Pelagius' commentary suggests that they were both aware of, and determined to avoid, his views on grace and nature. Il ne s'agit pas d'une édition du texte mais d'une enquête sur les circonstances de sa rédaction, sur son contenu et sur ce qu'il nous apprend de la situation politique en Irlande sous Elisabeth I re. 130 pages d'analyse, trois appendices, 9 pages de bibliographie, 36 de notes et un index nous font découvrir un manuscrit assez déroutant qui ne subsiste sous forme complète que dans la bibliothèque archiépiscopale de Lambeth et, sous forme fragmentée, à Trinity College, Dublin. 2 Le « Livre de Howth », environ 180 feuillets (recto verso, avec une dizaine de pages blanches) comprend deux parties : d'une part, un résumé de la « conquête » de l'Irlande depuis l'arrivée de John de Courcy et de la famille St Lawrence (sous Henry II) jusqu'à 1579, d'autre part, des miscellanées : extraits de textes historiques, de contes, de poèmes, des listes de géants, de propriétaires fonciers, de rébellions, d'événements surnaturels etc. La première partie elle-même est largement constituée par des emprunts à des annales ou chroniques (de Fabyan, de Hall, de Hussey, de Stow, de Holinshed) plus ou moins fidèlement retranscrites. À cela s'ajoutent des notes marginales apportant évaluations et commentaires.

This article examines the characteristics of the Fomoiri in Irish mythological literature--particularly their being one-eyed, one-legged, and one-handed or one-armed--and rather than positing a proto-Indo-European or native Irish origin for these physical motifs, instead suggests that these characteristics may be derived from Isidore of Seville&#39;s Etymologiae , which contains a catalogue of the &quot;Plinian races&quot; of classical mythology and pseudo-ethnography within it.  All of the Fomoiri&#39;s characteristics can be compared to the physiological forms of the Giants, Sciopods, Cyclopes, and Blemmyae from the canonical list of Plinian races.  Further omparison of Irish accounts of cynocephali (dog-headed humanoids) within texts like Lebor Gabala Erenn are also likely derived from Isidore.

An Old Irish rimeless poem recording a verdict by the legendary judge Fachtna is represented in various textual traditions. It is cited in glosses to early Irish law, in commentary to Amra Coluim Chille and in two lemmata in Sanas Cormaic. This paper provides a critical edition of the poem, and analyses it in conjunction with the accompanying narrative prose and verses, in order to illustrate the complex relationship between the various textual traditions. The discussion may further our understanding of the intellectual background of the medieval literati and the growth of medieval Irish law tracts. 1 An earlier version of this paper was presented at the XII International Symposium of Societas Celtologica Nordica 2012, held in Helsinki. Cet article s'interroge sur les représentations que l'Irlande propose d'ellemême à l'ère du Tigre celtique et plus particulièrement au moment de la prise de conscience des transformations dans le courant des années quatre-vingt-dix. Il revient sur les commentaires qui suggèrent que l'Irlande est entrée brutalement dans l'âge post-moderne sans avoir fait l'expérience d'une réelle modernité. L'auteur nuance cette position en insistant sur les parallèles entre l'Irlande et le monde occidental depuis le xix e siècle et en défendant l'idée que le concept de modernité aiguë défini par Giddens est plus opératoire dans le contexte étudié.

The Rwa, bantu farmers of Mount Meru (Northern Tanzania), remain very afraid of curses, in spite of the efforts of christian denominations to wipe away this belief. When normal procedures fail to solve a dispute, this fear of curses will help bring a wrongdoer forth. A public ritual called “to break the pot”, performed by a specialist, launches the curse. Then the wrongdoer most often acknowledges his misdeeds and pays compensation for them, and another ritual will “cool down” the curse in order to stop its actions. This article describes the circumstances which lead to the launching of this ritual, the way it is enacted, and discusses the reasons for its efficiency.

In contrast to modern Western society’s treatment of plants as non- sentient beings to be used or killed at will for our own benefit, the complex legal system used in Ireland from prehistory up until the 17th century delineated penalties for mistreating trees that were not dissimilar to the penalties for mistreating other humans. The early Irish relationship with trees as described in Brehon Law and extant lore was not only utilitarian but also deeply spiritual and tied to the peoples’ identity. Brehon Law provides an example from European history that illustrates traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) and animistic relationships with the more-than-human world of nature. This paper explores some ecopsychological and environmental benefits of applying its principles today.

Traduit du vieil-irlandais par Damien Labadie Longin est identifié, dans la tradition chrétienne, à deux personnages mentionnés dans les Évangiles : le centurion qui reconnaît, au pied la Croix, la divinité de Jésus (Marc 15, 39) et celui qui perce le côté du Christ (Jean 19, 34). Considéré comme le premier évangélisateur de la Cappadoce, Longin (nom venant probablement du grec λόγχη, « lance ») fut martyrisé par le gouverneur de Césarée de Cappadoce, Octavius, au cours du I er siècle (son natalicium est fixé au 15 mars dans le calendrier romain). Bien qu'il soit un personnage légendaire, Longin tient une place importante dans la piété et l'art chrétiens, comme en témoigne l'imposante statue qu'en fit le Bernin dans la basilique Saint-Pierre de Rome. Des hagiographes latins, notamment Rabban Maur et Jacques de Voragine, rédigèrent sa Vita, dans laquelle sont narrés sa prédication et son martyre. Dans un recueil irlandais médiéval de Vies de saints, le Leabhar Breac (XIV e s.), est également conservée une version en irlandais ancien de sa passion (Páis Longínuis). Nous reproduisons, commentons et traduisons un extrait de ce texte, dans lequel sont présentés sa conversion à la Croix, sa vocation monastique et son enseignement en Cappadoce, où il attira nombre de fidèles à la foi.
