Modern Russian historiography

From the very beginning of its history, the relatively short-lived estate culture was keenly self-aware of its transient nature and toyed with the theme of Apocalypse in literature. Historically, the decline of the estate in the course of the century and a half was a subject of literary reflection that as if prefigured what would happened in 1917. However, the widespread destruction of the estates in 1905 coincides with the first renaissance of the estate culture in the 1900-1910s. The estate culture experiences another-this time virtual-renaissance after 1917, in the literature of Russian emigration. Nostalgic of the past, this literature engages in myth-making as it invents the estate as the Invisible City of Kitezh of a sort. The virtual reconstruction fosters the desire to physically reconstruct the estate as it does a German playwright Karl Sternheim in the newly acquired estate "Claire Colline"-Yasnaya Polyana. Sergey Rakhmaninov follows the lead as he buys a piece of land on the shores of Firwaldstadt Lake and tries to recreate the spirit of the Tambov estate Ivanovka where he spent his childhood years.

This polemical essay contains a number of observations concerning the criticism of Mikhail Bazanov to previously published article of the authors about the two paradigms in modern Russian historiography (2014). In spite of some moments of inconsistency, an incorrect citation and inaccurate transmission of ideas of the authors from Bazanov, authors express hope for further fruitful disсussion.
