Late Antique Iconography

Theban tomb no. 84 was originally built for Iamunedjeh, first royal herald under the reign of Thutmose III, but already one generation later, it was appropriated by Mery, high priest of Amun under Amenhotep II and owner of TT 95. The change in the tomb owner’s identity is reflected in the inscriptions of TT 84: Iamunedjeh’s and his wife’s names and titles were often substituted by Mery’s and his mother’s. The decoration of the tomb reveals a complex picture with several stages and patterns of intervention. This paper, which was originally published in English in the Bulletin de l’Institut Français d’Archéologie Orientale in 2024, gives an overview of the different scenarios and investigates the rationale behind their distribution in the given spatial context. With the help of a detailed analysis of the available epigraphic data, the study aims at bringing us closer to some of the intentions and priorities of the actors who—as either decision makers or executors—were involved in the process of adapting the textual program of the tomb to its new owner’s identity.

The main purpose of this research consists in the study of the representation of the currus in two common themes in the sarcophagi of Late Antiquity with a biblical theme, namely the crossing of the Red Sea and Elijah riding a flaming chariot across the sky. A comprehensive analysis of all the evidence, in fact, allowed to count a total of just over thirty images connected to these transport vehicles and, therefore, to outline their main iconographic characters: these are small chariot, open on the back, equipped with two wheels and characterized by a semi- circular bank; the main differences, however, refer to the materials used for their coating (wood, leather, textile, wicker) and the number of the horses -two (biga) or four (quadriga)- used to tow the carriage. The skilled decorators of sarcophagi, for the graphic restitution of the chariots, recovered schemes and tricks typical of the figurative culture of the past, since the types depicted seem to find strict comparisons, now only for the morphological aspects now also for the decorative programs, with those used during the races in the circus and amply attested in the artistic documents of Antiquity (sarcophagi, mosaics, glasses, bronzes and ivories). On the other hand, the limited presence of archaeological findings -relevant, however, only to the metal elements of the wheels- and the absence of a chrono-typological seriation have greatly complicated the possibility of establishing chronological concordances between the specimens represented in these exclusive funerary monuments and the archaeological data.

The decollatio, the decapitation by the sword, was used since the earlier Christian age to kill people
who believed in Jesus Christ. At the beginning it was used only for people who had roman citizenship, then from
222 for the inhabitants of the Roma Empire. But the gladius became symbol of triumph for the believer, who offered
his own head to the executioner and had the opportunity of living the best experience: the imitation of Christ’s
model. Since the beginning of the 4th century, the gladius had an important role in early Christian iconography, in
martyrdom imagines, on the Passion Sarcophages, in particular concerning the decollatio Pauli.

In the spring of 2019, conservation work was undertaken on the decorative apparatus preserved in the catacomb of S. Eutizio near Soriano nel Cimino.
The fragments of the fresco with the painted inscription of Apra were recovered and set up on a new support, which returned perfectly legible, allowing us to validate the reading of the chronological elements indicated in it (consulate of Flavius Eusebius), the only pivotal point of the topographical reconstruction of the funerary complex linked to the figure of the martyr Eutizio. In fact, in connection with the Apra inscription is also the funerary mausoleum, whose frontal decoration has undergone general cleaning and consolidation. Here, too, in addition to confirming previous readings, faint chromatic traces add suggestive details that allow us to frame more clearly the derivation of the pictorial complex from models of courtly origin.

La ricerca eseguita tra il 2017 e il 2022 ha indagato lo stato conservativo dei mosaici nelle catacombe romane, focalizzandosi sui cimiteri entro il IV miglio dal circuito murario aureliano.
L’indagine ha contribuito a quantificare le decorazioni, contestualizzando gli interventi nella storia evolutiva dei complessi cimiteriali. Si sono identificate le ragioni della diffusione dei mosaici nel IV secolo e della loro cessazione all’inizio del V secolo (con qualche eccezione), facendo luce sui problemi legati alla conservazione degli apparati e mettendo in evidenza nuovi aspetti relativi ai procedimenti esecutivi e ai materiali impiegati, oltre che alla loro illuminazione.

This paper aims to illustrate some current research questions about the personification of the Jordan river in early Christian Art, especially in the scene of the Ascension of Elijah, by analyzing two sarcophagi from the late 4 th century AD. The Arles sarcophagus allows a reflection on the relationship with Graeco-Roman iconographical traditions whereas the Milano sarcophagus raises the question of its perception by its contemporaries.

Elements of Christian visual culture appeared in
various media in monumental and applied art during the late
antique period, from painted decoration in the catacombs,
through funerary monuments, to utilitarian objects such as
jewellery and lamps. The paper analyses the symbolic meaning
of fish and maritime motifs in the context of the late antique
visual culture of the Mediterranean and their meaning within
the Interpretatio Christiana, as well as the appearance of these
motifs on late antique lamps. Ten lamps with maritime motifs
or in the form of fish or dolphins are known from the territory
of the Central Balkans. Elements of decoration are considered
in relation to analogies, textual references, and the context of
the finds.

This article pays attention to the fact that no attested contemporary depictions of the Huns have been identified yet. It is so despite the fact that the Suda lexicon mentions the event when King Attila saw a picture in the imperial palace of Milan in 452 representing the victorious emperors and the defeated deceased Huns. According to the story, Attila re-painted the picture where the Roman emperors bringing sacks of gold are shown before his throne. This scene can be identified with the well-known submission scenes of late Roman triumphal monuments of Constantinople, but here, naturally, the Barbarians were depicted kneeling before the emperor(s). The author examined all these monuments (esp. the base of the Theodosius' Obelisk and the Arcadius' Column) and came to the conclusion that these Barbarians cannot be identified as Huns. On the other hand, it cannot be ruled out that the Eastern Barbarians (generally identified as Persians) depicted in the pedestal of the Arcadius Column were Huns. Studying the evidence of later ivory diptychs, the author suggests that there was no significant iconographic distinction between the bearded Persian male figures, the Huns and other nomad peoples. Most probably they were also depicted in trousers with Phrygian caps.

The houses in the cities of late antique Romagna are known from a long tradition
of studies and excavations, allowing a distinction between different construction
types, which correspond to specific social levels. The cities showing the longest continuity of the late Roman residential typologies are Ravenna, Rimini, Cesena  and Faenza. Even the floor mosaics document a persistence of a figurative repertoire common to the Mediterranean aristocracies.

Kirkegården og kirkegårdskulturen er fortsat under forandring. Der er-ganske paradoksalt-intet nyt i dette udsagn. Kirkegården er et spejl af samfundet, så tidens gang kan aflaeses på dette indhegnede sted. Det gaelder udviklingen indenfor kirkegårdens monumenter, beplantning og afdelinger. Flere af artiklerne i dette årsskrift aflaeser netop tidens spor på vore kirkegårde, fortaeller om enkeltmonumenter af saerlig interesse eller om en bestemt kirkegårds saerlige udvikling og historie.

Lande, som ligger ved havet, må i sagens natur have en maritim tradition. Sådan lyder i hvert fald myten, men er det rigtigt? Redaktøren af dette bind har sat sig som mål at opspore det maritime i Slesvig-Holstens økonomiske og sociale historie (s. 7), noget, der ikke tidligere er blevet behandlet videnskabeligt. Bogen indeholder 14 bidrag. Indledningsvis beretter Bo Ejstrud om Gredstedbro-skibet. Selve skibet blev i 1945 både fundet og ødelagt ved gravearbejde i Kongeådalen, og der er kun tre stykker tømmer tilbage, som efterfølgende blev udstillet på museet i Ribe. Skibet er fra før-vikingetiden, højst sandsynligt fra det 7. eller 8. århundrede. Bo Ejstrud begraenser sig dog ikke til beskrivelsen af dette arkaeologiske fund, som i sig selv er spaendende nok, idet han bruger skibet som udgangspunkt for en analyse af kulturelle kontakter omkring Nordsøen baseret på arkaeologiske indsigter. Idéen er ikke ny, men forfatteren bruger en ny metode, den såkaldte Jaccard-Koef icient, for at beregne ligheder og uligheder mellem regioner. Resultatet er, meget kortfattet, at handels-og kulturforbindelser indtil 1000 frem for alt fulgte kysten og kun meget sjaeldent sprang over det åbne hav. I det følgende bidrag beskriver Detlev Kraack byernes netvaerk i Slesvig, Stormaren, Ditmarsken og Holsten fra middelalderen til den tidlig moderne periode. Hertil bruger han en del forskellige perspektiver, fra bydannelse over geogra iske overvejelser til "tilbagetraekningsstrategier" for slaviske søfarere og epita ier af rådsherrer fra Flensborg. Måske fordi undersøgelsens base er meget bred, har forfatteren svaert ved at komme til et klart resultat. I denne henseende har Sylvina Zander en noget lettere opgave. Hendes mindre undersøgelse af iskernes ret og pligt til at holde loden Trave isfri er et lille kabinetsstykke, som giver et livligt indblik i hverdagen i en nordtysk handelsby mellem 1700 og 1900. Det samme gaelder bidraget af Dieter Pust om Grønlandsfarere fra byen Flensborg, som giver et omfattende indblik i et saerdeles spaendende miljø. Martin Rheinheimer er repraesenteret med to artikler. Sammen med Jakob Seerup kortlaegger han et indtil nu ukendt netvaerk af styrmaend i den danske låde i 1700-tallet. Artiklen forbinder på forbilledlig vis almindelige baggrundsstudier med studier af enkeltpersoners skaebne, hvorved det bliver klart, at maend fra Emmerlev og Schackenborg i saerlig grad dannede rygraden i datidens danske låde. Denne rigt illustrerede bog praesenterer ny og vaerdifuld viden om den romerske kejsertids designmetoder. Disse principper er ofte af ret simpel karakter og baseres på praktiske geometriske metoder og moduler tegnet ved hjaelp af blot passer og lineal. Bogen består af en indledning, syv kapitler, tre enkeltstudier, to indekser, et generelt indeks og en illustrationsliste.

In his last work  "Les voies de la creation en iconographie chrétienne: Antiquiteet Moyen Age", Paris 1979, Andre Grabar did an in-depth analysis of the intellectual and semiotic value of images, and established the clear distinction which separates the Greco-Bvzantine from the Latin-Western tradition with respect to the value of their use (psychological and pragmatic) and to norms (to the code). Grabar then stressed the special creativity or
'iconographical originality’ of western art, which concentrated on sign-symbols rather than narrative images, brief citations of scriptural places destined to convey the message of salvation through symbolic — rather
than representational — means. Based on this, the textual analysis of the famous slab Two Lambs with Jewel-Studded Cross from the Theodolindean
basilica of St. John the Baptist in Monza (beginning of the VII century), reveals that the slightly perceptible incision coming out of the mouth of the lamb on the right (Biblically, «who comes from the Orient») and which touches the central disc of the cross is not arbitrary, nor is it a whim of the
sculptor; rather, it is a sign-symbol in which the figure of the lamb rises cotextually to the 'apocalyptic' figure of the Agnus Dei, «lamp» (Rev. 21) of the heavenly Jerusalem in the radiant vision that the Angel shows John at the end of Revelations. All of this has a pronounced semantic dissimilarity
with respect to the contemporary Coptic pictorial text representing the Two lambs with Jewel-Studded Cross, but a complete iconographie similarity and semantic homology with the Agnus Dei in the center of the Heavenly Jerusalem in the illuminated Revelations of Saint-Amand. It is a confirmation, then, at the middle of the X century, not only of the special nature of western
iconographical tradition inspired from apocalyptic figure, but also of the model providing role played by the Book of Revelations in the western figurative code, in the non-millenarian lectio of Eusebius of Cesarea, and according to the original message of the small book of John as reconstructed in a recent exegesis (Eugenio Corsini, "Apocalisse prima e dopo", Turin 1980).

Papa Pio XI nell'anno 1924 poté assicurare alla S. Sede la proprietà della Vigna Chiaraviglio situata verso S. Sebastiano, fra le vie Appia Antica e delle Sette Chiese; il quale terreno completò tutta l'area già nell'altra parte proprietà della S. Sede che si estende alla destra della Via Appia Antica dal "Quo Vadis?" a S. Sebastiano e sotto la quale si sviluppa la grande necropoli di S. Callisto. Nello stesso anno si gettarono in una zona del terreno acquistato le fondazioni di quella "Casa delle Catacombe" che si erigeva perché divenisse centro per quanti si recassero a visitare e a studiare la rete dei Sacri Cimiteri esistenti nella zona Appio-Ardeatina. Mentre per fondare il lato S-E del fabbricato non si incontrarono difficoltà speciali e si attraversarono strati compatti di tufi antichi, nel resto e specialmente nel lato verso S. Sebastiano si sfondò con i cavi in un gruppo di gallerie cimiteriali non ancora conosciute (fig. 1). Le necessità del lavoro portarono allo sterro di esse, sterro quindi limitato alla zona circoscritta dal fabbricato; qualche frana avvenuta esternamente nel terreno in rispondenza di antichi lucernari, ha peraltro condotto alla necessità di estendere considerevolmente lo sterro, si che ora la rete si presenta abbastanza vasta e completa" 1. Questa la cronaca di Francesco Fornari, allora Direttore dell'Ufficio tecnico della Pontificia Commissione di Archeologia Sacra, che propose, immediatamente, l'interrogativo più urgente: "Il problema più interessante che si prospetta è quello di sapere se la rete in questione faccia gruppo a sé, o sia in comunicazione con S. Callisto o lo sia con S. Sebastiano. Lo stato attuale dell'esplorazione non ci permette di dare una risposta sicura" 2. Ma, il Fornari escluse il collegamento con S. Callisto (troppo lontana), mentre percepì che alcune gallerie "si protendono verso S. Sebastiano: perciò la ipotesi terza sembra la più probabile, anche per questioni di vicinanza" 3. Per il resto, il Fornari descrive testualmente il monumento, rilevando poche peculiarità, fatta eccezione per la tipologia delle tombe "multipiano" all'interno degli RACr, 97 (2021), pp. 261290.

The article is about a text which was found in 1989 by Natalia Okhotina in a miscellany in the Department of Manuscripts in the Russian State Library. It is written in the 16th century before 1570 on contemporary paper consisting of 22 folios. It provides a detailed account of the history of the monastery from its foundation in the late 14th century to the reign of Ivan Groznyi. Its appearance coincided with a fairly heated debate on the date of the foundation of the monastery, located in the northern part of Lake Ladoga: in the 12th century or 1329 as claimed by one source, which also gave precise and correct dating of two other monastery-foundations, Konevitskii Monastery likewise in Lake Ladoga (1393) and the famous Kirillo-Belozerskii Monastery (1397) – some Orthodox ecclesiastics have even claimed a much earlier date, though. According to the Tale the monastery was founded when Ioann II was Novgorodian Archbishop (1388-1415) which, if 1329 was a result of a scribal error, suggests 1389 as the most likely date of the monastery’s foundation. According to the Tale the monastery was founded amidst pagan Karelians on the island, who had to be fought off with the help of Novgorodian military forces. The aim was to convert the Karelians to Orthodox Christianity presumably in order to stop Karelians to opt for Swedish rule. The Tale offers a detailed account of monastic life; the introduction of cenobitic monasticism; early formation of Karelian hagiography.
