O objeto desta tese é a língua polonesa falada pelos polono-descendentes em duas colônias em Campo Largo (PR): a Col. Dom Pedro II e a Col. Revier. O problema central é a variação diatópica, levando em conta a topodinâmica da variação da língua emigrada entre as prováveis matrizes de origem no antigo território polonês, no final do século XIX, e duas comunidades na região Sul do Brasil. A hipótese, que subjaz a investigação aqui proposta, é de que, apesar da proximidade geográfica das duas colônias fundadas no ano de 1876, exista a variação diatópica associada à origem geográfica dos primeiros imigrantes das duas comunidades, sendo possível distinguir variantes chamadas aqui de [+galicianas] e [+prussianas]. Assim, o objetivo principal
é identificar e descrever, com base nas variáveis escolhidas, a variação da língua polonesa falada nessas duas colônias, segundo os fatores históricos, sociais e ideológicos que tiveram impacto na manutenção ou substituição das variantes originais. Para alcançar o objetivo proposto, a tese tem como base teórico metodológica as seguintes áreas: Dialetologia, Dialetologia Pluridimensional e Relacional, Contato Intervarietal e Linguístico, bem como a Sociolinguística. A
investigação dos aspectos mais sutis, referentes às relações espaciais e sociais localmente relevantes, baseia-se nos estudos de espaço e ideologias linguísticas, entre outros. Em termos metodológicos, a principal ferramenta da pesquisa é a entrevista que consiste em um questionário lexical e uma conversa semidirigida, aplicada em 58 participantes da pesquisa, divididos entre duas colônias. 48 entrevistados pertencem à amostra principal, enquanto 10 pessoas, nascidas em
outras comunidades, formam o grupo de controle.  No total, foram submetidas à análise quantitativa 22 variáveis lexicais, 4 fonético-fonológicas e 4 morfossintáticas, das quais todas demonstraram a relevância da variação diatópica e diatópica-cinética.
Esta última é inferida com base na autoidentificação das pessoas entrevistadas como <galicianas= ou <prussianas=, rótulos comumente usados nas comunidades e referentes à origem geográfica de seus antepassados. A análise das variações diageracional e diagenérica não demonstrou relevância desses aspectos, embora o
número menor dos dados fornecidos pelas gerações mais novas, principalmente na Col. Revier, possa apontar para um processo de substituição linguística da língua polonesa pelo português nas colônias sob estudo. Apesar da proximidade das duas comunidades, que propicia o nivelamento dialetal, a análise quantitativa demonstrou
níveis muito baixos de convergência entre as variedades originalmente trazidas das terras polonesas. A análise qualitativa dos relatos dos entrevistados desvelou a relevância da variação linguística no sentido de pertencimento a um grupo (galiciano ou prussiano), construído historicamente e ressignificado localmente pelos
entrevistados. A formação de uma autoidentificação em oposição ao outro, acentuada pelas diferenças linguísticas e as condições topográficas da região, criaram um solo fértil para as relações complexas entre as duas colônias, entrelaças com hierarquias das variedades linguísticas presentes na região. Assim, a relativa estabilidade das variantes originais ocorreu apesar da diferença de privilégio atribuído às variedades e
ao status socioeconômico de seus falantes, o que pode ter sido causado pelo processo gradual de substituição do polonês pelo português, o qual suplantou o processo da convergência dialetal.

The purpose of this chapter is (1) to describe the various factors - linguistic, but
also political, cultural, and historical - that conditioned the development of a
unique variety of English spoken by Miami's now-majority Latinx community
during the second half of the twentieth century through sustained contact with
Spanish, (2) to apply to this description the model of ethnolect development
proposed by Thomas (2019), (3) to provide a description of what is known
about the linguistic structures of this variety, and (4) to imagine how English
in Miami will respond to contemporary patterns of immigration that keep
South Florida in a constant state of change.

Language Attrition among Immigrant Teachers of Spanish is the first book devoted entirely to Spanish language attrition in all language areas and specifically among language professionals.

Based on original research awarded the ASELE-Routledge prize in 2022, this volume presents an interdisciplinary and pioneering study on native language attrition among Spanish L1 immigrants in Israel, though its insights can be easily applied in any immigration setting. It focuses on the challenges faced by immigrant foreign-language instructors teaching their L1 (first language). Integrating both quantitative and qualitative data, the study explores Spanish language attrition in a multilingual and multicultural context like Israel, offering innovative insights and suggestions for future research. Language Attrition among Immigrant Teachers of Spanish also contributes to the native/non-native language teacher debate from the unique perspective of attrition, proposing a workshop for teachers alongside its research findings.

This volume is an essential resource for researchers and postgraduate students of applied linguistics with a specific interest in language attrition or sociolinguistics. It will also be of interest to foreign language teachers and teacher trainers.

In this article, we use quantitative and qualitative methods to explore the genderrelated experiences and perceptions of Eritrean asylum-seekers in their linguistic encounter with Israeli society. Focused on the Eritrean community in the city of Rehovot, our findings suggest that men and women experience different communicative situations due to the domestic division of labor, and that women tend to perceive themselves as less dependent on language mediation or assistance than men when using basic services such as health and child education. In the absence of language assistance from Israeli institutions, traditional gender roles impose more challenging contexts of language socialization on women. Women are expected to take the children to health services and interact with kindergarten and schoolteachers, and, while they experience greater hardships than men by facing difficulties in these trying situations, they develop linguistic resourcefulness by participating in a broader range of communicative interactions with Israeli service providers.

An important sociolinguistic characteristic of urban contact dialects is their association with multiethnic neighbourhoods, where "ethnicity" should be understood as a social category, constructing groups that are believed to share a common descent-typically geographically associated-and culture (e.g., Moran 2014; Fought 2002). These dialects typically emerge among young people who grow up in a mixed urban neighbourhood where a substantial part of the older generation (e.g., speakers' parents or grandparents) have immigrated to the city from rural areas and/or other countries. These locally born speakers, then, find themselves as part of a new, multiethnic urban generation that has access to a wealth of different dialects and languages as part of the broader cultural heritage in their peer group. 1.A. This article explores the contrasting yet evolving roles of women in Islamic and English traditions. It provides an in-depth analysis of how religious doctrines, cultural practices, and legal frameworks shape women's status within these societies. In Islamic tradition, the Qur'an and Sharia law offer specific guidelines on women's rights, but cultural interpretations have often led to restrictive practices. Meanwhile, English tradition has seen a shift from Christianity-influenced gender norms to a more secular legal approach, driven by social movements advocating for gender equality. Through a comparison of religious texts, historical examples, and modern reforms, this article highlights both the differences and the shared challenges in achieving gender equality in these two traditions. The evolving roles of women, influenced by both religion and culture, demonstrate the complexity of gender norms and the potential for future progress in both societies.

School-community partnerships aim to improve students' educational experiences by combining the resources and expertise of schools and community organizations. These collaborations involve various activities, such as academic assistance, health and social services, and family engagement programs, which support students' academic achievement, social growth, and overall well-being. Despite the significant advantages, such as better academic outcomes and improved social-emotional development, challenges like aligning diverse stakeholder goals and ensuring sustainable funding remain. To overcome these obstacles, it is essential to establish clear communication, strategic planning, diverse funding sources, effective evaluation methods, and a culture of mutual respect and collaboration. By addressing these factors, school-community partnerships can create a supportive and enriching educational environment for all students.

Institutional spaces like schools provide opportunities for language preservation. They also help redefine integration in community-defined ways. Limited budgets may place educational positions in jeopardy and if school counseling positions become jeopardized, then school counselors must communicate their role and impact more effectively. However, school counselors may lack training and experience in professional self-advocacy practices, and advocacy efforts may be undermined by role confusion experienced by both counselors and the educational professionals surrounding them. This article describes one model of professional advocacy framed by Bronfenbrenner&apos;s Ecological Systems theory that may be used by school counseling leaders to plan systematic advocacy efforts that engage individual school counselors in united professional advocacy strategies.

Resumen El artículo aborda cómo la enseñanza de las lenguas constituye una de las funciones clave de la escolarización. Los progresos de las didácticas de las lenguas han contribuido a mejorar su enseñanza. La concepción de que era suficiente conocer bien una lengua para enseñarla ha dado paso a una reflexión sobre su significación y a la certeza de que el proceso de enseñanza y aprendizaje implica conocimientos actualizados y una especialización rigurosa. Es necesario conocer las variables sociolingüísticas, pedagógicas y políticas que entran en juego. La sociolingüística y lo sociolingüístico están vinculados a los procesos de enseñanzaaprendizaje en la adquisición de lenguas a nivel social, nivel en el que se determina la política de enseñanza de lenguas de una comunidad; a nivel cultural donde la lengua es el instrumento de relación entre el individuo y el ambiente; a nivel comunicativo donde la lengua es un mecanismo básico de interacción y a nivel lingüístico.

The study examined the association between immigrants’ adaptation—as reflected by host-country language proficiency (based on self-ratings)—and their children’s psychological well-being in two countries: Germany and Israel. The findings stressed the importance of children’s gender in the study of parent–child dyads. Our separate analyses of boys’ and girls’ subsamples revealed results that were undetected when we analyzed the subsamples of both genders together. Specifically, we found that self-reported paternal proficiency in the German language was positively associated with their daughters’ psychological well-being, whereas maternal proficiency in German was positively associated with their sons’ well-being. No association was found in our Israeli sample between immigrant language proficiency and their children’s psychological well-being during the first 3.5 years following migration. Tale analisi parte dalla natura polisemica della parola serba žena, dal momento che i suoi significati sono resi in italiano con i lessemi donna e moglie. La caratteristica dei corpora di privilegiare l’osservazione della lingua in una dimensione viva e autentica
permetterà di far luce sui contesti in cui si parla di donne e del loro ruolo (reale e atteso) all’interno della società. Ne consegue che la lingua che veicola tali significati è spesso stereotipata o cerca di adattarsi alle nuove tendenze del politically correct. La connotazione positiva o negativa dei collocati completa il quadro linguistico della parola in oggetto e la inserisce dentro diversi contesti sociali che possono avere tratti
universali. Al tempo stesso si ricorrerà alla parola uomo come termine di paragone con il corrispettivo quadro collocazionale, tenuto conto che il rapporto della figura maschile con quella femminile è considerato antagonistico, pur confermandosi inevitabilmente complementare.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the glass ceiling metaphor, drawing upon Pustejovsky's Qualia Structure Theory. Hence the Formal, Constitutive, Telic and Agentive roles will be employed to account for the meaning of the two words composing the metaphor, investigating the shift from source to target domain. Furthermore, the present research is based on SketchEngine's Word Sketch tool, which provides the most typical collocates regarding the two nouns. In this way, the phenomenon of polysemy will also be considered, by exploring the different senses the words encode.

Critical Language Testing Viewing tests in reference to social, educational and political contexts situates the field of testing in the domain of critical testing. In reference to language testing, it is referred to here as critical language testing. Borrowing mostly from Pennycook (1994) and from Kramsch (1993), critical language testing will now be described. Critical language testing assumes that the act of testing is not neutral. Rather, it is both a product and an agent of cultural, social, political, educational and ideological agendas that shape the lives of individual participants, teachers and learners. Critical language testing views test takers as political subjects in a political context.

The numbers of diverse students are increasing within the school system, demanding necessary changes in school leadership to meet the needs of students from linguistically diverse backgrounds. School counselors not only work as leaders, advocates but also as "collaborative team members and supporters of systemic change" (Aydin, 2011, p. 36). Through this renewed leadership between school counselors and principals, it becomes possible to develop a type of working alliance to meet the needs of students from linguistically diverse backgrounds. With this review the author aims to discuss the ways to create a collaborative partnership between school counselors and principals for linguistically diverse students in order to promote their social integration, school achievement and overall well-being. Exploring school counselors' and principals role in creating a welcoming school climate towards linguistically diverse students within the school and school community can promote positive organizational culture. Accordingly, the following topics will be explored and discussed: a) principals influence on school achievement through facilitating a collaborative climate and b) how school counselors facilitate leadership as change agents. Both school principals and school counselors work towards achieving similar goals; thus they can facilitate more collaborative leadership as they reach out to the school community. Using a systemic approach, which generates greater understanding and awareness, school counselors and principles play a critical role in the transformation of their school system. When school counselors and principals join forces, students from linguistically diverse backgrounds learn and achieve better. A collaborative school climate is critical in order to develop a positive organizational school culture, which generates motivations for greater connection among the stakeholders.

This paper explores the relationship between linguistic variation and individual attitudes toward risk and uncertainty. We propose an innovative marker that classifies languages according to the number of non-indicative moods in the grammatical contexts involving uncertainty. We find that speakers of languages that use these moods more intensively are on average more risk averse. Our marker is then used to instrument risk aversion in the model for financial asset accumulation. In addition, by using Chen (2013)'s FTR linguistic marker as a proxy for the subjective discount rate, we disentangle the effects of risk aversion and time preferences on asset accumulation.

The world is rapidly urbanising, causing alarming health problems to their citizens. The Cities Changing Diabetes programme (www.citieschangingdiabetes.com) aims to address the social factors and cultural determinants that can increase type 2 diabetes (T2D) vulnerability among people living in cities. Cities Changing Diabetes Rome has three core elements: mapping the problem, sharing the learnings and taking action. Methods: Public data of Italian Institute for Statistics (ISTAT) and available scientific reports were reviewed and findings integrated to map diabetes and risk factors. The prevalence of T2D in the 8 health districts of Rome was mapped and the correlation between prevalence and social and cultural determinants was assessed. Results: Rome has 4.3 million inhabitants. People over 65 has increased by 136,000 units in the last decade, reaching 631,000 citizens in 2015. Elderly people living alone are 28.4%. The obesity prevalence is 9.3% and increased by over 2.0% in the last 10 years; more than 40% of Romans are physically inactive. The prevalence of T2D is 6.6% but it varies in the different 8 health districts between 5.9% and 7.3%. A linear direct correlation exists between the prevalence of diabetes and unemployment rate and use of private transportation rate in the health districts (Pearson R 0.52 and 0.60, respectively), while a linear inverse correlation is found between prevalence of diabetes and aging index, school education level, and slow mobility rate (Person R-0.57,-0.52, and-0.52, respectively). Conclusions: Important socio-demographic changes have occurred in Rome during the last decades with a raise in the prevalence of obesity and diabetes. A wide variation exists in the prevalence of T2D among the districts of Rome, associated with social and cultural determinants. This study model can help rethinking diabetes in an urban setting. Key messages: Through the Changing Diabetes Programme, Rome and the other participating cities have new tools to rethink diabetes in an urban setting. Data on the association between prevalence of diabetes, social/ cultural determinants can help identify the risk factors and the health care services for citizens with/at risk of diabetes.

This dissertation attempts to examine how and why the gender politics has transformed towards neo-conservatism in Turkey and towards neo-traditionalism Russia in the recent decades. Despite a long history of women’s rights in both Turkey and Russia, neo-conservative and neo-traditional approaches have been emerging in both countries, particularly after the access of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and President Vladimir Putin to power. In examining this transformation, the main focus is put on the gender climate, which mainly shapes around the process of hegemony constitution. This study aims to investigate language teaching practices for bi/multilingual students applied in Greek Public schools. The students of LRM (Language Education for students with Refugee and Migrant background) programme (HOU) filled out an online questionnaire. Teachers were invited to express their attitudes towards applied language practices, their teaching strategies, and materials which they considered appropriate for bi/multilingual students. The findings showed that the 42 participants valued the use of effective language teaching (ELT) practices. It was argued that bi/multilingual students could benefit the most from them. Nevertheless, most of the participants underlined the institutional shortcomings such as the lack of appropriate educational material. Finally, the researchers, based on the questionnaire data and recent research trends, came up with suggestions that could improve the bi/multilingual language education policies of the Greek educational system.

Community-based heritage language (HL) schools play an important role in identity-building of diasporic communities. This study based on twenty-five interviews with HL school leaders and teachers of the International and Heritage Languages Association (IHLA) in Edmonton, Canada aims to understand the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on HL learners’ diasporic identity formation. We approached HL schools as communities of practice (Lave & Wenger, 1991) where learners acquire specific HLs while engaged in socio-cultural communal practices. In addition, Basu’s (2011) conceptualization of school as a space of integration through multilingualism helped us understand the changes affecting immigrant integration and identity perceptions during the pandemic. Findings show that the forced transition to online teaching and learning during the pandemic led to the development of new transregional and transnational practices and collaborations. These new practices helped expand and redefine the traditional understanding of community, identity, and belonging within HL communities. As a result of the pandemic, the conceptualization of community moved beyond physical land borders towards global cyber communities linked by the given HL. This finding signals the departure from land-based understanding of identities towards language-based cybercommunity-linked identities – the shift that prompted us to examine these new relationalities through the lens of groupness, which challenges the rather broad and overused notion of identity. Our findings further indicate that these newly forged relationalities and agencies of diasporic heritage communities generated resistance to the systems of power of the host societies that marginalize diasporic heritage communities.

The importance of school-family-community (SFC) partnerships have long been established; however, more research, practices, and policies are needed to better understand and support diverse socio-cultural contexts of children from underserved communities in the U.S. Using Epstein's model on SFC partnerships as the conceptual framework, the purpose of the article is to discuss key influences, barriers, and opportunities in developing best practices for successful collaborations in culturally and linguistically diverse communities. The article discusses and provides practical examples of how barriers such as cultural disparities between the home and school, parents' and teachers' roles in education, language difficulties, another constraint faced by families can be addressed to foster SFC partnerships. Education stakeholders-teachers, school leaders, parents, and community members-need to establish appreciation, trust, and respect towards each other and learn to value the unique knowledge that each brings to the education table. When education stakeholders are engaged in strong partnerships, students' academic and nonacademic outcomes are enhanced.

La linguistica dei corpora muove i primi passi negli anni ’70 del XX secolo e nei decenni successivi conosce un’evoluzione che ne mette in luce la portata interdisciplinare in una serie di campi come lessicografia, traduzione, didattica e scienze sociali. Per l’inglese il potenziale dei corpora linguistici nella glottodidattica è stato oggetto di ricerche e ampiamente sperimentato con studenti dal diverso background formativo. La prima parte di questo volume, di natura teorica, ripercorre l’evoluzione della linguistica dei corpora nel serbo, con uno sviluppo sempre in linea con i progressi della componente tecnologica, ma meno dinamico sul versante della sperimentazione a lezione. Le prime ricerche svolte presso l’Università di Torino hanno prodotto risultati incoraggianti dai quali è emerso come gli studenti sappiano cogliere e apprezzare in pieno gli stimoli offerti da questa didattica innovativa partecipando attivamente al percorso di apprendimento. La seconda parte del volume, di natura pratica e funzionale, illustra i principali strumenti d’impiego (corpora) con relative metodologie di ricerca (query) e propone esercizi da svolgere con gli studenti in classe. Proprio perché basati sulla lingua autentica, i corpora sono una fonte inesauribile per la creazione di esercitazioni pratiche, che non si sostituiscono agli strumenti tradizionali ma con questi si pongono in rapporto di stretta continuità. Simile a una lente di ingrandimento, la ricerca corpus-based aiuta a focalizzare gli aspetti lessico-grammaticali migliorando la sensibilità linguistica e la comprensione di molti fenomeni sociali e culturali, mentre la sua versatilità fa sì che possa facilmente adattarsi allo studio di ogni lingua.

Resumen: El objetivo principal de este artículo es comparar el proceso de integración social de los hijos de inmigrantes con dos procedencias dispares – africanos y europeos no pertenecientes a la Europa de los 15-, matriculados en los institutos de enseñanza secundaria en el municipio de Níjar (Almería). Concretamente vamos a analizar la adaptación de estos dos grupos en diferentes dimensiones: socioeconómica, relaciones mixtas, referentes culturales, normas, transnacionalidad y psicosocial. Los resultados se obtienen a partir de la administración de un cuestionario a todos los asistentes, ese día a clase, en el instituto de secundaria del municipio; resultando un total de 130 encuestas.
