Heritage Values

Spatial justice-equitable access to urban resources and decisionmaking-is essential for sustainable futures. This study examines how transformative game design can foster spatial justice by empowering children in the shaping of their living environments. Using a qualitative, interpretive approach, the research analyzes nine sessions of the co-designed game ParticiPécs, played by 138 students aged 14-18. Findings show that games can foster children's agency and spatial awareness, yet also risk replicating existing social inequities. By identifying design-related barriers and moments of failure, the study offers critical insights and practical principles for developing more inclusive, reflective, and transformative planning games.

Este trabajo tiene como objetivo estudiar los valores del patrimonio cultural como un aspecto clave en la actividad de la Restauración. La apreciación de estos valores es compleja porque intervienen factores como la diversidad (hay muchos tipos de factores -culturales, económicos, políticos, estéticos…-) o los cambios con el tiempo. De esta manera, los valores determinan las decisiones que se toman. Sin embargo, asistimos a una transformación del sistema cultural en materia de protección del patrimonio. En primer lugar, clasificamos los significados y valores de los bienes culturales. Además, identificamos los principales mecanismos de transformación y la influencia de los medios de comunicación de masas en la percepción del patrimonio cultural. Finalmente, proponemos unas pautas de revalorización de los objetos culturales. Por otra parte, usamos la disciplina de la semiótica como herramienta transversal para la evaluación de los valores culturales. Así, afirmamos que los bienes culturales y los objetos restaurados se comportan como una estructura comunicativa.

O presente artigo tem como objetivo a identificação dos valores patrimoniais do Parque dos Manguezais (Unidade de Conservação do Recife) que representam a significância natural do bem e que consiste na etapa inicial do processo de conservação patrimonial, de acordo com a Australian Natural Heritage Charter (IUCN, 2002). Para identificação dos valores, foram entrevistadas distintas categorias de atores (moradores do entorno, especialistas e agentes públicos), cujos depoimentos foram analisados com base no método Análise de Conteúdo. Como resultado, foram estabelecidas as dimensões patrimoniais relacionadas aos aspectos ecológicos e culturais da Unidade de Conservação, assim como foram levadas em consideração as inter-relações que tais atores mantêm com o ecossistema e que sinalizam as ações objetivas de conservação do Parque dos Manguezais.

This paper is based on rock art sites of the Maloti-Drakensberg massif (South African part), where more than 600 decorated shelters have thus far been identified. Being both institutionalised heritage sites open to the public and living heritage sites associated with various social practices and utilizations, their preservation requires us to consider the complexity of the values attributed to them. Combining a multidisciplinary and empirical approach, our paper highlights the processes of hybridization between attributed values, which therefore do not adhere to a strict category approach. Being strongly linked to the contexts in which they are articulated, their identification is coupled with a consideration of the macrodynamics in which rock art sites are integrated, as well as an analysis of the links between these different contexts and the value systems identified. In conclusion, the operational dimensions of such a methodology is questioned and some initial possibilities for action are proposed.

O presente artigo tem como objetivo a identificação dos valores patrimoniais do Parque dos Manguezais (Unidade de Conservação do Recife) que representam a significância natural do bem e que consiste na etapa inicial do processo de conservação patrimonial, de acordo com a Australian Natural Heritage Charter . Para identificação dos valores, foram entrevistadas distintas categorias de atores (moradores do entorno, especialistas e agentes públicos), cujos depoimentos foram analisados com base no método Análise de Conteúdo. Este artigo insere-se no debate contemporâneo acerca da Gestão da Conservação Urbana baseada nos valores patrimoniais. Em vista da dicotomia entre valores essenciais e valores instrumentais, a Conservação tem encontrado entraves associados às missões das instituições que gerem os sítios patrimoniais e aos processos participativos. Quão efetivos se mostram os mecanismos de gestão compartilhada? Para análise dessa problemática, adota-se o Parque Metropolitano Armando de Holanda Cavalcanti, situado na região Nordeste do Brasil, cuja conservação esbarra no conflito entre residentes e gestores, alcançando resultados insignificantes. Analisam-se o processo de tombamento do Parque e os planos de ações elaborados em 2010 e 2018, com o objetivo de identificar como a participação dos entes relacionados ao bem patrimonial tem contribuído para a tomada de decisão. Para lograr êxito nos processos de conservação, há que se alinhar os discursos com as realidades locais e garantir a efetiva participação dos atores envolvidos.

Swedish multi-family buildings constructed before 1945 constitute an important part of the national built heritage. However, the majority does not have a formal heritage protection. Part of this building stock has already been renovated, notably through earlier energy saving programmes where additional exterior insulation, new façades and windows were frequently installed with little consideration for the original architecture. Now, 40 years later, these buildings face new renovations. This provides opportunities to improve the energy efficiency, indoor climate and user comfort. At the same time, the original architectural and historical characters lost in previous renovations could be recreated. In this paper, an inter-disciplinary research team illustrates the challenges met in practice to reach a sustainable renovation based on three cases. The case buildings are so-called "Landshövdingehus", constructed in the 1930s and owned by a public housing company. The relations between building physics, energy efficiency, embodied energy, and the effect on heritage aspects in renovation are studied. The results demonstrate the potential to reach 30% calculated energy efficiency without investing in ventilation systems. When comparing embodied energy to savings in operational energy a short payback time is achieved. However, focusing on the replacement of windows, the cases illustrate difficulties to recreate heritage values at same time as achieving an airtight and energy efficient construction. In order to improve the results from the heritage point of view, there is a need for quality assurance of the renovation and building permit process.

The paper deals with exploitation and preservation in a selection of detailed development plans that include cultural values and architectural qualities. The focus is on how compensation actions are expressed in detailed development plans in Sweden. These kinds of plans regulate land-use and design of buildings on plots by law. The planning and designing of detailed development plans for areas of Gothenburg with heritage values of national interest are investigated through case studies. The objective is to investigate, analyze, and discuss compensation in the planning processes of sites with appointed cultural values. The overall goal is to develop knowledge of how key players understand the heritage and architectural qualities in detailed development plans. The research method is based on cases studies. From a selection of 39 detailed development plans obtained by the City Planning Authority of Gothenburg, 3 were chosen and studied in this paper. Selected detailed development plans were analyzed through close-reading of documents, site visits, and discussions at seminars. Detailed development plans seen as products have compensation measures embedded in the design as fixed regulations. They are demand-oriented to both land-use and architectural design. Compensation as a process is expressed by changes through opposition. The City Planning Authority eliminates criticism by changing the detailed development plan according to values and qualities protected by key players. Typical compensation measures consist of supplementation of the detailed development plans with descriptions of cultural values through texts and illustrations provided by investigations conducted by contracted consultants, revisions of the proposals for the detailed development plans, and the introduction of more specific regulations for the control of architectural design as response to criticism. The demolition and construction of new buildings are combined with protection and the prohibition of the demolition of cultural values on the plot. Cultural values can also be transferred by compensation actions into aesthetic programs for the design of additional buildings.

This chapter offers a perspective from ethnographic heritage research on the preservation of Buddhist artifacts in the Muslim community of Taxila, Pakistan. While this form of heritage preservation practice and art may be interpreted as paradoxical, we discuss social, institutional, and political factors that are responsible for the revival and continuation of these heritage practices. Through the examination of this case study, we discuss a unique mode of engaging with the negotiation of past and present spiritual identities that resists the assumption that this is a territory of heritage in conflict. The case study is a combined architecture and planning project in Gothenburg. The project started with a design developer competition for new housing. The winning design was transformed into a planning project. The town planning office's assignment was to implement the proposal in a detailed development in an area with cultural values, protected in the law and through the county administrative board and the city's conservation program, which is a local guideline for planning in Gothenburg decided by the politicians. The architecture and planning project deals with the need for housing, strong exploitation interests, and how planning processes handle cultural values and architectural qualities of both local and national import. Some of the adjustments in the winning design, as well as regulations in the detailed development plan, can in this case be understood as compensation. Objective, Research Questions, and Methods The objective is to understand how architecture, cultural values, and compensation are expressed in an architecture and planning project. The case has been selected because of the different demands connected to the site. The research question centres around three themes: 1) the design developer competition, 2) compensation as actions and adjustments of the detailed development plan, and 3) cultural values and architectural qualities identified in the consultant investigations and how they are implemented. The methods are archive studies, close reading of key documents, and site visits. The case has also been discussed at seminars. Result The result is presented as seven conclusions that discus how the task in the competition program is described in relation to conditions at the site, jury judgments, citizen participation, statements from authorities that review the detailed development plan, compensation as hidden actions, and specific regulations. A selection of identified values and qualities in the consultant investigation were transferred into the detailed development plan.

Besides the pure application of serious games as tools for knowledge transfer, a further trend has been observed in the last few years: The creation of games as an opportunity to gain practical experience and thereby also build up valuable knowledge. In this context several approaches are possible, such as using paper prototyping, game maker tools like Scratch, RPG-Maker, Construct 3 or Game Maker Studio 2, and the application of actual game engines like Unity. This contribution aims to discuss the possibility of creating games in a very specific, predefined genre using game maker tools that have been especially developed for use in an educational context and therefore offer didactic guidance. The Game Creator Tool which was developed as part of the Erasmus+ project Create Digital Games for Education (CDG4E) is presented in more depth. Using this tool, one can create decision card games inspired by the mobile game bestseller "Reigns". Within the project, the consortium created educational games in different areas such as fake news prevention and STEM education. In addition to these ready-made games, another focus was placed on using the tool itself as a teaching technique, for example to create games on a specific topic with school classes or within youth work, but also as an instrument for setting up dedicated "game jams". This contribution reports on the advantages and drawbacks of creating the tool itself by analysing qualitative and quantitative data gathered during the iterative design process of the Game Creator.

Since the late 1800s, vernacular letterforms have been vital components of the traditional shopfronts of Ireland, enlivening, place-making, and inspiring dialogue with streetscapes. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage identifies, records, and evaluates Ireland’s post-1700 architectural heritage. While the state initiative appraises architecturally significant shopfronts, it typically overlooks the critical signage element. This research aims to bridge this gap by documenting, mapping, and interpreting the existing vernacular letterforms in Kilkenny as a paradigm. Through the lens of heritage, the study seeks to construct a case for preserving, promoting, and advocating for vernacular letterforms and the traditional craft of signwriting. Signwriting straddles art, craft, and design dissolving creative hierarchies yet remains academically underexplored. Raising awareness and advancing the craft’s criticality may influence local and national policy. With the current economic climate threatening to permanently alter Ireland’s typographic landscapes, academic scrutiny of this rich graphic heritage has never been more crucial.

The field of tourism includes its own heritage, through which it is possible to valorize those components of the cultural environment and of the cultural heritage that truly have a touristic valence. The urban interventions in Bucharest during the communist period affected many central historical areas. However, a part of the Jewish architectural heritage continues to last, with the attention on it increasing in recent years with the awareness of its value. The aim of this study is to assess the tourist potential of the Jewish cultural heritage by using an index of tourist attractiveness and a set of values established as evaluation criteria; identifying the heritage values as well as the ways of its development and promotion within the cultural tourism in Bucharest, in the context of preservation, conservation and restoration; identifying new ideas, products or services, respectively improving existing ones.

El presente trabajo realiza un análisis arquitectónico conjunto y comparado de los principales edificios de viajeros construidos por la Compañía de los Caminos de Hierro del Norte de España (1856-1941) desde la premisa de que perviva todo o al menos parte del edificio original o reformado por parte de la propia compañía. Así, el análisis realizado se estructura en los tres niveles fijados en la clásica tríada vitruviana: histórico-constructivo (firmitas), funcional (utilitas) y compositivo-estilístico (venustas). De las conclusiones extraídas se realiza una prospectiva sobre cómo se están protegiendo estos elementos, qué es lo que debemos proteger y cuál es la tendencia de usos en los mismos. En la base subyace la necesidad de establecer valores y definiciones claras y concretas sobre este patrimonio que permitan la unificación de criterios y la discusión sobre el patrimonio ferroviario para uso general, así como huir del catálogo o inventario estereotipado y estático extrapolado de otras arquitecturas y que, quizá, no se ajuste a la realidad de estos edificios. This paper discusses how archaeological heritage can function as a focus of community identity in a rural setting, and what happens when an original monument is replaced by a copy. The case study presented deals with a visually striking ancient monument on the island of Öland, SE Sweden, that was accidentally broken in 2014 and later reconstructed. This case thus touches upon concepts such as authenticity, age value and aura of ancient objects and monuments, but also community engagement in local heritage and the ability of archaeology in adding value to existing sites and monuments. It is concluded that a dissonance often exists between the official assessment of heritage value, and values appreciated by the local community. In the latter, social value can be seen as connected to the concept of pastness, where a range of factors both material and immaterial combine to render a monument or a site its perceived significance. Gobbe-Sabz (Green Cupola) is one of the most important and prominent build­ings in Kerman, Iran, dating back to the Qara-khitai dynasty (1222–1306 AD). It was a huge complex of buildings that was almost totally destroyed in an earthquake. Every building during its lifecycle from creation to deterioration acquires values that are important in making any decision about restoration. Brandi’s theory of restoration considers ruins as a work of art, claiming that they are the result of a unique, creative process. He asserts it is necessary to have a creative process for restoration to reclaim its significance in the human consciousness. Although there remains only a small part of Gobbe-Sabz , many remarkable heritage values have been added over time that could be helpful in the creative process for its conservation. Cyprus, the easternmost island of the Mediterranean, is faced with the challenge of addressing the heritage assets of its modern architectural heritage. Emerging scholarship has indicated the wealth and the complexity of modern architecture in Cyprus as heritage. Nevertheless, modern architecture in Cyprus, developed during the most turbulent periods of the twentieth century in the island, has been linked with processes of colonialism and post-colonialism, independence, nation-building and conflict. Hence, by being explicitly involved in identity politics and conflict modern architecture in Cyprus constitutes contested heritage. In this context the mobilisation of modern architecture in Cyprus as heritage in favour of the construction of a peaceful and democratic society presents many challenges.

Over the last twenty years, the concept of heritage has gradually expanded to encompass a wide typological range of objects, as well as a wide range of time periods. At the same time, more and more disciplines have been involved in the study, safeguarding, promotion and management of heritage. Furthermore, as the participation and access to heritage is now recognised as a human right, the heritage processes involve more stakeholders, including groups which value the heritage object in different ways. These are some of the fundamental changes that characterise a ‘new paradigm’ in the heritage field. In light of this ‘new paradigm’ the consideration of heritage values has gradually shifted from the periphery to the epicentre of conservation theory and practice.

As heritage has been increasingly accepted as the source of important benefits to society the need to protect more complex layers of our heritage and to mobilise them in favour of sustainable development is today more urgent than ever.

This thesis argues that value-based approaches present opportunities for addressing complex heritage questions and mobilising heritage towards sustainable development in conflict-affected contexts. The heritage values of the modern architectural heritage of Cyprus, as well as the opportunities in the value-based approaches are addressed through the examination of the case study of post-WWII schools built in the city of Larnaka, Cyprus between 1945-1963.

Super insulation materials (SIM) are insulation material with a very low thermal conductivity, even lower than stagnant air. The aim of the project has been to show how these materials can be used to save energy and space, as well as to contribute to preservation of exterior character defining elements while maintaining the temperature and humidity performance of the walls when renovating buildings built before 1945. The project was performed by researchers in the fields of building physics and building conservation. Brick buildings in Sweden have been in focus, as these buildings have one of the largest energy efficiency potentials in the entire building stock. Brick buildings often challenge engineers and architects by having contradicting demands on energy efficiency and cultural heritage values. This study explores the emergence of changing values associated with heritage in postapartheid South Africa, expressed as a shift from tangible to intangible heritage values. Central to the study is an understanding of the evolutionary construction of changing values in a rooted heritage community within the urban historic environment of Bo-Kaap, the oldest residential suburb of Cape Town. Exploring changing values in Bo-Kaap, where tangible and intangible heritage intersect in the contemporary moment, showcases how heritage ably and fluidly adapts and transforms as an ever-shifting cultural process, and forges new, or altered, modes of identity construction. Historical sites declared as Typical Zones (TZs)-''Zonas Típicas''-in Southern Chile are subject to urban planning and conservation conflicts that address challenges in heritage restoration and development. The relevance attributed to conservation management in contemporary Chilean cultural policies faces the contextual relationships between institutionalized heritage sites, their definitions, and their territorial context. This research contextualizes the urban planning and cultural heritage definition in Southern Chilean cities where heritage assets are mostly wood-built that are over 100 old. It presents excerpts of a case study focused on the valorization of Valdivia's TZs due to the projected bridge construction by the Public Works Ministry. The bridge access plans to use part of that historical area. Through cross-disciplinary research analysis, the paper considers the factors taken into consideration within the law on defining TZs and heritage values, and how they affect the protection of the areas of impact regarding the new bridge. The study observed the disconnection of the local definition of heritage, where public spaces and private property are separated concepts in the planning and heritage conservation process. It is therefore important to mention that the definition of heritage in the national legal framework should be connected with the perception and definition of space. Tangible, intangible and environmental values should be identified through the process of declaring TZs and follow territorial planning. Tentatively, this can help understand the entry points that can be used to develop and conserve the cultural landscape for the benefits of Wooden Cities. Interpreting the protected site as a dynamic context, a local model for the protection of heritage values in urban areas of southern Chile, tending towards global and sustainability frameworks, could be initiated.

This article aims to present a Methodological Guide to add gamification elements to the Geodesign framework when planning the future of the city, using Geogames such Minecraft, with the participation of children in Tirol, in Brazil. The problematic tackled is related to the challenges that participants of a Geodesign workshop face when co-designing projects as alternative futures for the territory, such as losing engagement and involvement. To support the participants overcome these challenges we incorporate playfulness into the some of the Geodesign workshop phases enhancing geovisualization, collaboration and cognition.

Besides the pure application of serious games as tools for knowledge transfer, a further trend has been observed in the last few years: The creation of games as an opportunity to gain practical experience and thereby also build up valuable knowledge. In this context several approaches are possible, such as using paper prototyping, game maker tools like Scratch, RPG-Maker, Construct 3 or Game Maker Studio 2, and the application of actual game engines like Unity. This contribution aims to discuss the possibility of creating games in a very specific, predefined genre using game maker tools that have been especially developed for use in an educational context and therefore offer didactic guidance. The Game Creator Tool which was developed as part of the Erasmus+ project Create Digital Games for Education (CDG4E) is presented in more depth. Using this tool, one can create decision card games inspired by the mobile game bestseller "Reigns". Within the project, the consortium created educational games in different areas such as fake news prevention and STEM education. In addition to these ready-made games, another focus was placed on using the tool itself as a teaching technique, for example to create games on a specific topic with school classes or within youth work, but also as an instrument for setting up dedicated "game jams". This contribution reports on the advantages and drawbacks of creating the tool itself by analysing qualitative and quantitative data gathered during the iterative design process of the Game Creator.

RESUMEN - Los valores del patrimonio forman parte de los discursos asociados a la gestión del patrimonio cultural en diversas disciplinas, como la antropología, el urbanismo, la geografía y la sociología. Este artículo plantea una propuesta sobre el modo en que se han configurado y transformado estos valores a lo largo del tiempo. Discutiremos cómo se ha pasado de posiciones epistémicas más estáticas a otras más dinámicas, haciendo hincapié en una reflexión sobre la tendencia participativa actual, en la que la sociedad es protagonista. Los principales valores que consideraremos en este trabajo serán los históricos, estéticos, naturales, inmateriales, sociales y económicos. Situaremos al lector en posiciones críticas para invitarlo a reflexionar sobre la manera en que los expertos académicos debemos acompañar este dinamismo de valorización patrimonial a través de la democratización de nuestros discursos.

ABSTRACT - Heritage values are part of the discourses associated with cultural heritage management in various disciplines, such as Anthropology, Urban Planning, Geography, and Sociology. This article proposes how these values are shaped and how they have been transformed over time. We will discuss how heritage has shifted from static epistemic positions to more dynamic ones, emphasizing a reflection on the current participatory trend, in which society is the protagonist. The main values considered in this work are historical, aesthetic, natural, immaterial, social, and economic. We will place the reader in critical positions in order to invite her to reflect on the way in which academic experts should support this dynamism of heritage valorization through the democratization of our discourses.

The aim of this paper is to document and present a critical reflective review on the evolution of a syllabus 1 of a Geodesign course at the Master level in an Italian Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering. The author discusses the urgency of fostering the uptake of such an approach due to the need of properly addressing Strategic Environmental Assessment principles which are nowadays mandatory in the planning practice in Europe, but often poorly applied. However, with reference to the Italian case study, evidence is given of low diffusion of teaching Geodesign. To address this issue, the evolution of a decade of a Geodesign syllabus for master programs in environmental engineering, architecture and civil engineering is presented highlighting opportunities for scalability, and demonstrating a workable way to introduce Geodesign teaching in architecture, engineering and planning schools where it is still lacking.

Learning environments must weave content and practice from different areas of expertise to achieve success in the end. In this paper, we describe the approach taken in the design of a serious game aimed at teaching children about conflict resolution. We address the issue of including users, both teachers and children, in the design process and the indispensable multidisciplinary effort to put together a tool that suits learners needs. The paper highlights the decisions throughout the design due to the different perspectives we wanted to incorporate in the game. These include research on conflict theory, user participatory research and game design. By reckoning that all the perspectives are equally important, we insure that in the end we will have a solid game which fine-tuned mechanics will support its serious purpose.

The games with a purpose paradigm proposed by Luis von Ahn [9] is a new approach for game design where useful but boring tasks, like labeling a random image found in the web, are packed within a game to make them entertaining. But there are not only large numbers of internet users that can be used as voluntary data producers

In this demo project we explore quantifiable data engendered by emergent geoplay games as a source, to research the use of urban green space impacts on in health and well-being. By the establishing of an emergent geogame built on a GPS dependent interface for smartphones, one facilitates diverse and unanticipated behavior that produce digital data by movements, actions according to the rules, and documentation. The research will involve the exploration of the empirical data produced by play in green urban spaces in accordance to the core concepts of spatial information, fun and well-being.

We designed two experiments, which tested Minecraft as a geogame environment for engaging young people in urban planning. These experiments were conducted with children, who emerged as active emancipated actors to bring their values to the planning practice. The playtesting results revealed the potential of Minecraft to keep children engaged in the design workshop, as well as their relevant ludic ability to co-create walkable, green, and interactive places. New research questions arose about the potential of creating a culture of planning among children in order to motivate other social actors to share responsibilities for sustainable development and management.

This article aims to provide an empirical overview on the state of the art on Games Studies related to Architecture and Urban Planning throughout a long research structured on fifteen experimental steps related to fifteen different geogame designs. The empirical approach aimed to add and refine comprehensions on the development of the concept of geogames. This concept is a combination of serious games, technology, cultural heritage, and urban planning to create ideas and digital prototypes to problematize and solve urban issues with civic involvement. Also, the work's focus on this concept was to learn which digital platforms could be engaging through the playfulness for children, which compose the societal target group for the research. This discussion tackles two different but complementary topics, related to 1) geogames as a tool for learning architecture and urban planning, and 2) geogames as a tool for collaborative planning. Hence, the research questions are: which type of game builders could be used to support teachers to improve architecture and urbanism learning? And how technology can be applied to keep citizens engagement into the process of planning at the same time that allows reaching a maximum consensus? The games’ design and the digital and non digital prototypes presented in the article were structured in order to show the process of validation of the geogames’ concept.

What does a political conceptualisation of the relationship between
urban development and heritage involve? Against the widespread
idea that there is a conflict between densification and the protection
of historic buildings and sites in the City of London, I show that
a conservative heritage discourse promotes the construction of speculative
towers. Arguing against a City that is privately owned, selfcompeting
and socially homogeneous, I develop a democratic understanding
of history that contests an essentialist reading of the city
and challenges the idea that speculative developments direct attention
to and visually enhance historic landmarks. Aligning historical
analysis with political critique, I draw on the work of Walter Benjamin
and Michel Foucault and discuss notions of “historical events” and
“cultural treasures” in order to think against the prevailing speculative
logic in the city.

This chapter offers a perspective from ethnographic heritage research on the preservation of Buddhist artifacts in the Muslim community of Taxila, Pakistan. While this form of heritage preservation practice and art may be interpreted as paradoxical, we discuss social, institutional, and political factors that are responsible for the revival and continuation of these heritage practices. Through the examination of this case study, we discuss a unique mode of engaging with the negotiation of past and present spiritual identities that resists the assumption that this is a territory of heritage in conflict.

The paper describes the processes, workflow and results of a Geodesign workshop held by the authors in Belo Horizonte, Brazil in 2015. The participants were involved in the design of sustainable future alternatives for the urban district of Pampulha – an area characterized by complex conflicting interests concerning both development and landscape preservation. The scenarios were created on the basis of set objectives and priorities by six stakeholder groups, and assessed on the basis of ten evaluation systems. During the workshop, the use of a collaborative design support system (Geodesign Hub) facilitated the creation of design proposals informed by geographic context operatively enabling the application of the Steinitz' Geodesign framework. The integration of information technologies in the planning process enabled the collaboration between the various actors involved simplifying the interactive scenario impact simulation and decision-making through real time performance analysis and quick negotiation cycles. Overall the Geodesign framework application with the Geodesign Hub platform proved to be a successful novel approach enabling to address some of the major traditional planning issues such as collaboration and negotiation in design and decision-making.
