The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly altered the experience of loss and mourning, potentially increasing distress among bereaved individuals. This study aimed to assess this experience and examine the role of spirituality and religiosity in this context. Using a mixed-methods, cross-sectional design, this research employed a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Inventory of Complicated Grief (ICG), the WHO-5 Well-Being Index, the Burdened by Grief and Loss (BGL) scale, and an open-ended question regarding what participants found helpful in their grieving process. Of the 323 responses eligible for quantitative analysis, 225 participants responded to the open-ended question. Notably, 36.84% of the sample scored above 25 on the ICG, indicating significant grief-related distress. Quantitative findings revealed that individuals with spiritual engagement (religious or not) reported lower levels of grief and higher general well-being scores. Qualitative analysis of the open responses highlighted spirituality as the most prominent source of support in coping with grief during the pandemic. Given Brazil's high mortality rate, a substantial number of people may be experiencing complications in their grieving processes. Healthcare professionals and spiritual/religious care providers should be equipped to offer appropriate support and foster interdisciplinary dialog to assist those bereaved effectively.

Objective. There is mounting evidence that more elaborate treatment rituals trigger larger nonspecific effects. The reasons for this remain unclear. In a pilot field study, we investigated the role of psychophysiological changes during a touch-based healing ritual for improvements in subjective well-being.Methods. Heart rate, respiratory rate, and skin conductance levels (SCL) were continuously assessed in 22 subjects before, during, and after a touch-based healing ritual. Preventative Care in the Preindustrial World: Comparative and Cross-Cultural Perspectives

This conference explores the contours for a global history of preventative care before the development of the modern, industrialized world, with a view to recover ‘public’ health practices across different civilizations; and to look at inter-connections and comparative perspectives. For too long now, discussions on public health have focused on the modern, urban and western world, leading to a lopsided, Eurocentric understanding. In order to redress the imbalance, this conference showcases papers that deal with non-European world(s), in particular, South Asia, the Persianate world, and the Indian Ocean network in the pre-colonial period. Given the relative dearth of research on preindustrial public health, we solicited papers that enriched our empirical base and provided fresh insights and perspectives from unexplored medical treatises and historical and religious texts, epigraphs, images, architecture and archaeological sites and reports. Moreover, we accepted papers that invite cross-cultural comparisons, and that bring out affinities and divergences in health practices across regions and cultures.

(ENG) In today's hyper-connected world, cyberspace has become a thriving hub for
communities, shaping and redefining the ways individuals express, practice, and
interact within their faith traditions. Some scholars have often addressed the need
for understanding online religious communities in relation to their physical
counterparts or offline religious practices, others examine how the Internet alters
concepts of identity and community, as well as how these communities become
inherently intertwined with networked behaviors. This paper delves into cyber
spiritual practices done by traditional and contemporary spiritual communities by
fostering a deeper understanding of the complex interplay between digital space as
a public space and religion in Turkey. The goal of this research is to investigate the
ways in which new-wave spiritual communities navigate and shape their identities in
online environments, considering the socio-cultural, technological, and
religious dimensions at play. The motives behind that the utilization of digital
platforms and how spiritual communities facilitate and shape the spiritual
expression, community building, and ritualistic practices on digital space will
be analyzed thematically through the lens of local courses, seminars,
community meetings, cross-platform instant messaging (IM) service groups,
and online events. While some are established by pre-existing physical
communities, others are entirely internet-based, with members potentially never
having the opportunity to meet in person. This paper explores and
conceptualizes the augmented landscape of spiritual identity and community,
by examining these intersections, I contribute to scholarly discourse, explore
innovative approaches for navigating religious environment in the digital age.

Background: Pregnancy and childbirth can be considered as an opportunity to expand thoughts or renew feeling on spiritual beliefs. The present study was conducted with the aim of investigating the relationship between spiritual health and childbirth experience among Iranian pregnant women.
Methods: This is a cross-sectional study that was conducted on 250 pregnant women referred to the Labor, Delivery and Recovery Room (LDR) of Amir al-Momenin Hospital in Zabol (Eastern Iran) for childbirth. Non-random convenience sampling method was used to collect the samples. Data collection tools included a personal characteristics questionnaire, childbirth experience questionnaire (CEQ), and spiritual health questionnaire. Data analysis was conducted using statistical tests, such as Pearson correlation test, independent t-test, and One-Way ANOVA. The level of statistical significance was set at 0.05.
Results: The results of present study showed that the mean age of pregnant women was 25.66 ± 5.73 years, with their mean score of birth experience being 64.97 ± 4.62 and their mean score of spiritual health being 88.89 ± 7.1. The results also showed a statistically significant relationship between birth experience and spiritual health (R =1, P=0.007).
Conclusion: In this study, as the score of spiritual well-being increased, the score of childbirth experience also increased. Thus, we suggest the findings of this study to be used as a basis for further research in other regions of the country and among a more diverse population of mothers with different backgrounds and cultures.

Background: Spiritual health is one of the most important psychological factors for university students, and it is perceived differently in various cultures and societies. Accordingly, this qualitative study investigates the definition of spiritual health and the most important factors that affect the definition of spiritual health among Gonabad University students. Methods: This is a qualitative-based study designed using semi-structured interviews with the faculty members and experts from Gonabad University of Medical Sciences and Gonabad Seminary from December 2022 to November 2023. For data collection, a total of 13 semistructured in-depth interviews were conducted, and open-ended questions were asked. The data were analyzed using the framework analysis. Results: A total of 13 participants (7 men and 6 women) with threatening behaviors took part in this study. The participants' ages ranged from 30 to 60 years. After analyzing the data, the following 6 themes were identified through framework analysis: culture, family factors, education, justice, community characteristics, and modeling. Conclusion: This qualitative study highlights diverse conceptions of spiritual health among Gonabad University students and provides valuable insights for promoting spiritual well-being in higher education settings and educating families on behavior guided by spirituality and corresponding values.

Background: Spiritual health is part of the general concept of child health. Considering the effects of spiritual health on the growth and development of children, it is necessary to understand the concept of spiritual health and its dimensions in children. Accordingly, this study explains the dimensions of children's spiritual health. Methods: This qualitative study was conducted using conventional content analysis. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews with 17 children and 9 researchers and specialists in the field of children's mental health. Interviews were conducted with an average duration of 30 min. Results: Dimensions of children's spiritual health with two themes of balanced relationship in 4 categories of relationship with God, relationship with self, relationship with others, and relationship with the environment, and the theme of relationship transcendence in 2 categories of transcendent behaviors and love of God were explained. Conclusion: Regardless of other developmental principles that follow the rule of maturity, the balanced relationship of spiritual health and the relationship transcendence of spiritual health in children did not follow the rule of maturity, and due to the innateness of the themes of balanced relationship and relationship transcendence of spiritual health. These characteristics have existed in children since childhood, regardless of any religious-spiritual measures within the family, and their spiritual health potential has been realized from their potential state.

In the last two decades, the academic community has seen the birth of a field of knowledge that has been gaining more and more attention: the field of religion, spirituality and health. Santiago Rodriguez Correa, Carla Mazuko, Mayara Floss, Geoffrey Mitchell and Scott A Murray describe the rationale behind, and opportunities for, developing primary palliative care in the country.

The present study aims to analyse the association that different types of spiritual and religious practices have with the occurrence of Exceptional Human Experiences (EHEs) as well as their emotional evaluation. We analysed the relation that meditation, prayer, and 'other' spiritual practices, or the lack of them, have with the occurrence of EHEs, which were measured employing the Exceptional Experiences Questionnaire (EEQ). Samples were recruited at psychology departments in the UK and USA. They consisted of n = 301 non-clinical participants, of whom n = 156 were from Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA (average age = 32.3, SD = 13.7); and n = 145 from Northampton, UK (average age = 25.2, SD = 9.8). Results suggest that people who pray experienced fewer experiences of deconstruction/ego loss, psychopathological and visionary dream experiences than other spiritual practice groups. Those who pray also reported more positive mystical experiences than non-practising individuals; whereas individuals with a regular meditative practice experienced more visionary dream experiences, and evaluated such experiences more positively, than those who pray and non-practising individuals. Results suggest that different spiritual and religious techniques are associated with different phenomenological end evaluative patterns of EHEs that can be differentiated from psychopathological experiences.

A presente pesquisa tem como objetivo avaliar a espiritualidade de cuidadores informais de pacientes em cuidados paliativos por doença oncológica e realizar uma reflexão bioética sobre o princípio da alteridade. A metodologia utilizada foi pesquisa de campo e é classificada como exploratória e quantitativa. Research concerning the relation between physical health and prayer typically employs an outcome oriented paradigm and results are inconsistent. This is not surprising since prayer per se is not governed by physiological principles. More revealing and logically compelling, but more rare, is literature examining health and prayer from the perspective of the participants. The present study examines the health-prayer experience of 104 Christians in the United States. Data were collected through recorded video interviews and analyzed by means of content analysis. Results show that prayer is used as a context nuanced spiritual tool for: dealing with physical suffering (spiritual-religious coping); sustaining hope and spirituality via a sacred dimension; personal empowerment; self-transcendence. These findings demonstrate that practitioners primarily engage prayer at a spiritual rather than a physical level, underscoring the limitations of a biomedical or "Complementary and Alternative Medicine" perspective that conceptualizes prayer as a mechanism for intentionally improving physical health. In clinical practice, regarding the medical, psychotherapeutic, or pastoral, the challenge is to understand prayer through the framework of the practitioner, in order to affirm its potential in healthcare processes.

Resumen El objetivo era analizar la percepción de los padres de niños con síndrome de Down sobre el estigma social y reflexionar sobre el tema a la luz de la bioética. Se trata de un estudio de elaboración y validación de un instrumento de medición en cuya prueba piloto contó con 106 participantes. Los resultados señalaron que el estigma inferioriza a los afectados, lo que conlleva desventajas sociales, desempleo, disminución de recursos financieros, no aceptación, intolerancia, invisibilidad social, menor acceso a servicios de la salud y el empeoramiento de la calidad de vida. Esto genera efectos negativos en la salud de los padres. En conclusión el estigma está presente en la sociedad, por lo que es necesario formular políticas públicas que concienticen a los padres y garanticen su derecho a la salud. Hay que reconocer que a pesar de ser un elemento más de enfermedad, el estigma no debe subestimarse.

Resumen La enfermedad grave lleva al sujeto a la factibilidad de la muerte, una experiencia del vivir. Se realizaron 12 entrevistas con adultos en cuidados paliativos oncológicos; y para el análisis se aplicó la perspectiva fenomenológica, con una descripción de los ejes de sentido producidos en los relatos. Se encontraron tres dimensiones de cómo las personas (re)organizan sus proyectos de ser a partir de la enfermedad y la finitud: Espiritualidad/religiosidad; ser en familia; relación con la muerte. El sentido de las trayectorias existenciales y la relación con el proyecto de ser son fundamentales para la adherencia al tratamiento y el enfrentamiento de la muerte. Resignificar la vida, la enfermedad y la muerte alivia el sufrimiento del paciente y le ayuda a dar sentido al tiempo que aún le queda. Estos interrogantes permiten reflexionar sobre la dimensión bioética en los cuidados paliativos y auxilian en la planificación de ese tipo de asistencia.

Severe illness places individuals in direct confrontation with death, an element of the experience of living. A total of 12 interviews were conducted with adults undergoing palliative care in cancer, and investigated by phenomenological analysis, describing the axes of meaning produced in the narratives. Analysis of the ways individuals (re)organize their life projects based on illness and finitude identified three dimensions: spirituality/religiosity; life in the family; relationship with death. The meaning patients attribute to existential trajectories and the relationship established with their life project are essential for treatment adherence and coping with death. Resignifying life, illness and death can relieve suffering and help patients give meaning to the time left. Such questions help us reflect on the bioethical dimension of palliative care and enable planning in this modality of care.

A cross-sectional study was conducted among doctors of North India (n = 250) with the help of self-administered questionnaire. The mean age of doctors was 42.18 years (standard deviation = 9.108). Of the total respondents, 74.35% were male and 25.65% were female; 65.65% had a strong or very strong belief in the spiritual dimension of health; 55.22% believed in the preventive role of spirituality; 80% believed in the curative role of spirituality and a similar proportion held the view that spirituality has an important role in day-today patient care; and 92.5% wanted to know more about the scientifi c work being done in the fi eld of spirituality.

In this context, the vertiginous proliferation of an uncertain number of religious-sectarians associations registered in the last years, together with the unlucky coercive actions exerted by some of them, have contributed to generate an alarming and indiscriminate opinion state. Starting from this idea, a social theoretical explanatory profile is elaborated to interpret the social and religious dynamicity, so diffuse and changing.

This systematic review sought to identify difficulties faced by professionals in the clinical management of end-of-life child patients. Bibliographic search was conducted on the SciELO and LILACS databases using the descriptors “therapeutic limitation,” “hospice care” and “comfort measures,” combined with the descriptor “child.” Of the 102 complete studies identified, nine met the established inclusion criteria. The results point to difficulties regarding decision making and therapeutic limitation for infant patients. In conclusion, when professionals feel better prepared to address issues related to the process of death and dying, they can provide more humanized care to patients and families.

Background: Loneliness is a serious issue among the elderly that considerably affects their health. Spiritual health might affect the level of loneliness in these individuals. Therefore, the present study was conducted to determine the relationship between spiritual health and loneliness.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed on 330 older adults who live in the western areas of the Golestan Province, Iran in 2019. The subjects were selected using stratified random sampling method with proportional to size. Data were collected by the short form of the Social and Emotional Loneliness Scale for Adults (SELSA-S) and the Spiritual Health Questionnaire (SHQ). Data analysis was performed in SPSS software (version 18) using Mann-Whitney U test and Spearman's rank correlation coefficient. Statistical significance level was set to 0.05.
Results: The mean of spiritual health and loneliness were 96.57±4.10 and 21.25±9.05, respectively. There was no significant correlation between spiritual health and loneliness (P=0.72), but there was a significant difference between urban and rural residents in this regard (P=0.037 and P=0.003). In addition, there was a significant relationship between spiritual health and loneliness in general (r=-0.139 and P=0.02). There was an inverse correlation between spiritual health and loneliness among urban residents (r=-0.27 and P=0.001) but not among rural residents (r=-0.06 and P=0.41).
Conclusion: Based on the findings, there is an inverse correlation between spiritual health and loneliness among the elderly. This could be a useful finding for planners and activists in the field of geriatric mental health in development of educational counseling and support programs.

A unidade de terapia intensiva caracteriza-se como um ambiente voltado ao atendimento a pacientes graves. Para a família, a internação em UTI tende a ser vivida como período de angústia e, para tanto, os membros da família utilizam-se de estratégias de enfrentamento. Objetivo: identificar as estratégias de enfrentamento utilizadas pelos familiares de pacientes hospitalizados em unidades de terapia intensiva através de uma revisão sistemática da literatura. Metodologia: foram selecionadas publicações da Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde, Pubmed e Scielo, nos idiomas inglês, português e espanhol, publicados no período de janeiro de 2008 a junho de 2020 com os descritores "Family", "Intensive Care Units" e "Coping". Resultados: Destes estudos, onze artigos foram incluídos na revisão. Os resultados mostram que as estratégias de enfrentamento focadas no problema são as mais utilizadas pelos familiares. As estratégias focadas na emoção, a religião e o suporte social apareceram como meios que os familiares encontram para minimizar o sofrimento e lidar com a internação. In the last decade, greater attention has been paid to the study of spirituality/religiosity as a coping strategy used by people with cancer, given its protective role against psychological morbidity, since each individual relates spirituality to the hope of surviving the disease. cancer. Therefore, this study aimed to identify how religiosity/spirituality influences patients undergoing cancer treatment. This is an integrative review of the literature, in the Medline, Lilacs, Bdenf databases, through the grouping of the following Health Science (DeCS) descriptors: oncology, Religion and Spirituality, together with the Boolean operator AND. 16 articles were identified. After reading these, 11 studies were identified that made up the selection, 5 of which were published by Medline, 5 by LILACS and 4 by BDENF. Data integration resulted in the frequency of data distributed into two categories: a) Religiosity/spirituality as a coping strategy in the face of illness and cancer treatment and b) The role of the health professional in religious/spiritual support during hospitalization. It is concluded that the recognition of spirituality-religiosity as a coping strategy and the identification of spiritual needs provide health professionals with a better scope of information for the care plan and for more comprehensive assistance.

Mesmo após décadas de pesquisas que desmistificam a narrativa de um conflito irremediável entre Ciência e Religião, tal discurso aparenta ter vida própria e segue se perpetuando. O objetivo deste trabalho foi investigar os efeitos dessa narrativa sobre a percepção de estudantes de Psicologia acerca das relações entre as duas esferas e descrever as repercussões de seu contato com a produção científica recente na área. Today, institutions experience complex healthcare situations that include suffering, pain, and death. This review clarifies the various ways of fostering and motivating spirituality and religiosity to ensure humanized care in the healthcare setting. The objective of this study was to analyze the scientific evidence on the dynamics of spirituality and religiosity to address humanized care in healthcare settings. Documents were collected from the following databases: Scielo and Pubmed databases. The following words were used for the search: "spiritual wellbeing," "spiritual care," and "spirituality" in English, Spanish and Portuguese, selecting only Latin-American experiences. We found 101 scientific articles from 2014 to 2021 through inclusion and exclusion criteria such as those without open access, duplicity, articles in the pre-publication stage, and letters to the editor, and reviews. Finally, 48 were analyzed. The results show that the spiritual and religious dynamic is a hopeful element in the face of the illness and suffering experienced by the person, being necessary for the nurse to include in specialized care. We conclude that is important to include in professional training spiritual care competencies, being the essence of nursing, holistic care. The various research shows that spirituality is transcendent in the person, and it also provides inner strength to deal with pain and therapy. Finally, the nursing professional must work the aspects of spirituality in an empathic way with the patient, respecting his creed, worship, and favoring the integral well-being.

RESUMO O presente estudo teve como objetivo conhecer o significado de espiritualidade para a equipe do Programa de Internação Domiciliar Interdisciplinar Oncológico, que atende o ser humano portador de câncer em cuidados paliativos. Trata-se de uma pesquisa descritiva e exploratória de abordagem qualitativa em que se utilizou o referencial histórico-cultural de Vygotsky. Os dados foram coletados em 2009, através de grupo focal, com oito profissionais da equipe de saúde do Programa de Internação Domiciliar Interdisciplinar Oncológico, em um município no Sul do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul. Obtiveram-se como resultado dois temas: 1) Significados de espiritualidade: o significado de espiritualidade na construção individual e 2) O significado de espiritualidade na construção coletiva. Ressalta-se que durante o desenvolvimento da pesquisa o grupo de trabalho ficou fortalecido pela troca de experiências e teve a oportunidade de discutir sobre as várias faces da espiritualidade no cuidado paliativo, reafirmando a necessidade da inclusão desta no processo de trabalho na saúde.

Considerando-se o câncer como uma doença que está presente no imaginário das pessoas como sinônimo de morte e sofrimento, geralmente carregada de imagens e conceitos negativos. O objetivo do estudo foi conhecer as práticas religiosas como mecanismo de superação desenvolvido por familiares dos pacientes oncológicos. O estudo foi orientado pelos pressupostos da Teoria das Representações Sociais. Introdução: A espiritualidade/religiosidade é considerada uma dimensão essencial nas boas práticas em cuidados paliativos, principalmente durante a fase de terminalidade. Esses pacientes, assim como seus familiares, fazem uso de estratégias de coping espiritual/religioso. Objetivo: O objetivo desta revisão é mostrar a relação entre o coping espiritual/religioso e o processo de terminalidade. Método: A metodologia aplicada foi a revisão sistemática e utilizou PubMed, Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde (LILACS), Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS), PsycINFO e Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) como bases de dados. Resumen El surgimiento y la propagación generalizada de la pandemia de la covid-19 llevaron a un cambio significativo en la rutina de las personas, especialmente aquellas con enfermedades crónicas. Así esta revisión de la literatura pretende comprender el impacto de los cuidados paliativos en los pacientes crónicos en la pandemia. Se sabe que el miedo y el sentimiento de soledad resultantes del aislamiento social profundizaron el sufrimiento de estos pacientes, lo que muestra la importancia de los equipos de cuidados paliativos para ayudar a los pacientes y sus familias a lidiar con esta realidad, especialmente en la fase terminal de la vida. Se destacan los beneficios psicosociales relacionados con la humanización de la atención, así como las ventajas económicas para el sistema de salud. La reflexión teórica apunta a la necesidad de implementar equipos de cuidados paliativos para promover la calidad de vida y la dignidad a las personas.

Resumen Ante el diagnóstico y tratamiento de una enfermedad grave en niños como el cáncer, los padres, sobre todo las madres, tienden a asumir plenamente las demandas de cuidado, por lo que necesitan desarrollar estrategias de afrontamiento de la situación. Este estudio descriptivo y transversal tuvo por objetivo identificar el uso de coping religioso/espiritual en los cuidadores informales de niños con leucemia linfocítica aguda mediante la aplicación de la escala de coping religioso/espiritual breve. Participaron 30 cuidadores informales, quienes presentaron un alto coping religioso/espiritual (media=3,90; DE=0,34) en la modalidad positiva (media=3,67; DE=0,48). Nesse sentido, este estudo descritivo e transversal objetivou identificar o uso do coping religioso/espiritual em cuidadores informais de crianças com leucemia linfoide aguda mediante aplicação da escala de coping religioso/espiritual breve.
