Guidelines for cardiovascular rehabilitation from different countries underline the importance of psychological factors in the achievement of improved clinical conditions and quality of life in patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD). Nevertheless, little research has been performed to identify the specific factors that greatly affect or foster patients' quality of life. The aim of the current study was to investigate the contribution of illness perceptions (IP) and self-efficacy beliefs (SE) on the impact exerted by illness severity on health and life satisfaction in patients with CVD undergoing a rehabilitation program. The study had a cross-sectional design and involved 116 patients (mean age = 65.6 years; SD = 10.0 years; 79.3 % men). Illness severity was measured in terms of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) at the discharge from the cardiology department, whereas psychological factors were assessed one week later. The results showed no relationships among LVEF and the two indicators of health and life satisfaction; moreover, these two variables are differently influenced by IP and cardiac risk factors SE (v 2 (1) = 0.96, p = n.s.). Findings provide important suggestions for the implementation of interventions aimed at bettering patients' quality of life, underlying the importance of working on IP and SE to improve levels of health and life satisfaction in patients with CVD.

This is the first study that uniformly analyzes health perceptions in all of Latin America and tests in a systematic way their relation to economic conditions at the country, income group and individual levels. The study uses three types of health self-assessment questions: i) health satisfaction; ii) health status on a scale of 0-10; and iii) the EuroQol 5D instrument (EQ-5D), which asks about mobility, selfcare, usual activities, pain/discomfort, and anxiety/depression. The empirical analysis finds support for the hypothesis that cultural differences between countries prevent cross-national comparisons of health perceptions, but it does not find support for the widely held view that the same applies within countries, presumably because the poor are more tolerant of their health problems.

Over the past few years, greater attention has been paid to the importance of incorporating behavioral health treatment into primary health care (PHC) settings in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). The purpose of the present study was to compare the participants' satisfaction on psychological services and quality of life (QOL) among primary healthcare clinics, psychiatric hospitals and healthy controls. The Arabic version of the World Health Organization Quality of Life-short version (WHOQOL-Bref) and Client Satisfaction Questionnaire (CSQ) were administered to 36 PHC participants, 60 hospital participants, and 63 healthy controls. In all QOL domains, there was no significant difference obtained on participants' QOL between PHC and hospital settings. Except for similar score to PHC participants on overall QOL (OQOL), healthy controls scored higher than the other two groups on four QOL domains and General Health (GH) facet. As for clients' satisfaction, participants under PHC setting reported significantly higher satisfaction compared to hospitals and healthy controls. Hospital participants reported higher client care satisfaction than healthy controls. Improvement in the quality of mental health care such as ease of referrals and detection of undiagnosed mental health conditions could be the cause for higher satisfaction with PHC services. Stigma associated with mental illness creates serious barriers to Saudi patient's access to psychiatric clinics of large hospitals. There is a need for incorporating qualified mental health providers into PHC and educating the general public to become aware of certain beliefs and attitudes that limit access to treatment and prospects for recovery of persons with mental

It is not only the economic determinants that impact on life conditions, but maintaining a good level of life satisfaction (LS) may also be an important challenge currently. In Luxembourg, university students receive financial aid from the government. They are then registered at the Centre for Documentation and Information on Higher Education (CEDIES). Luxembourg is built on migration with almost half its population consisting of foreigners. It is upon this basis that our research aims to analyze the associations with mental health factors (health satisfaction, psychological quality of life, worry), perceived financial situation, career attitudes (adaptability, optimism, knowledge, planning) and LS, for non-Luxembourgish and native postgraduate students. Objective. To evaluate the quality of life (QOL) of dental professionals in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. Methods. This cross-sectional study recruited dental professionals (general dentists, specialists, and consultants) from public and private sectors in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. The World Health Organization’s QOL Assessment-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF) questionnaire was administered among study participants. The questionnaire addresses four domains of QOL which are physical, psychological, social relationships, and environment. Results. There were 313 dental professionals in the study with a mean age of 35.72 (8.58) years. Although health-related quality of life is often diminished in populations characterised by physical illness, this does not necessarily imply lower overall assessments of general life satisfaction (GLS) and greater incidence of mental illness. According to Homeostasis Theory, this limited impact of health on these more global wellbeing indices may be due to internal and external buffers that serve to maintain one's overall sense of wellbeing and GLS in the face of adversity. Thus, the present study tested in a sample of 212 individuals (48 with vasovagal syncope, 62 cardiac patients, and 102 healthy control participants) the possibility that poor health-related quality of life (as expected for the cardiac and vasovagal syncope groups) may be offset by relatively higher satisfaction with other aspects of one's life (the domain compensation hypothesis). Consistent with this view, present findings showed that although individuals in the two health-risk groups reported lower health satisfaction (HSat) than the control group, they had comparable levels of mental health, GLS satisfaction, and subjective wellbeing (minus health; PWI-H). Moreover, moderation analyses confirmed that the relationship between HSat and GLS reduced to nonsignificance for individuals with PWI-H higher than nationally representative, normative levels. Collectively, these findings suggest that a broader context is necessary to understand the impact that illness may have on one's sense of GLS and mental health. In particular, the provision of support and satisfaction with other life domains may serve to buffer concerns about one's health.

Subjective Well-Being has increasingly been studied by several economists. This paper fits in that literature but takes into account that there are different aspects of life such as health, financial situation, and job. We call them domains. In this paper, we consider Subjective Well-Being as a composite of various domain satisfactions (DS). We postulate a two-layer model where individual Subjective Well-Being is explained by individual subjective domain satisfactions with respect to job, finance, health, leisure, housing, and environment. We distinguish between long-term and short-term effects. Next, we explain domain satisfactions and Subjective Well-Being by objectively measurable variables such as income. We estimate a model for the GS and DS equations with individual random effects and fix time effects.
