In today's interconnected and competitive world, cross-industry knowledge transfer is vital for innovation, often yielding superior results to any organization. At the same time, organizations are increasingly called upon to foster inclusive innovation in order to embed fairness for economic and social impact. In this chapter, we provide a backdrop to discussion in the rest of the book, briefly describing our perspective on innovation as a business model design activity. We draw on a number of key, partially overlapping literatures - especially design, innovation, knowledge, sensemaking and business model - to illuminate how organizations can draw on the rich knowledge bases, reflexive practices and inclusive innovation action effects observable in other industries, people and the world around them. These literatures help us to model how the acts of design during the life of a business model can evoke a shared 'sense' of something greater than the individual, potentially transcending a singular industry character. Cross-industry transfer in micro-foundational terms, thus offers researchers and
practitioners a heuristic for actively developing principles and practices that draw upon relational knowledge bases and inclusively innovative intent.

The demand for lower cost and flexible electronics has driven industry to develop alternative transparent electrode (TE) materials to replace indium tin oxide (ITO). ITO is the benchmark TE on the market, but its high cost and low flexibility limit it for use in future technologies. Recent work has shown the combination of the conducting polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) with the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3methylimidazolium tetracyanoborate (EMIM:TCB) is a viable ITO replacement. The work presented here investigates the nature of the interaction between PEDOT:PSS and EMIM:TCB in the solution state. A combination of scattering methods is used to illustrate a novel, multilength scale model of this system. At length scales larger than 300 nm PEODT:PSS adopts a microgel-like structure, and below ∼300 nm the system adopts an entangled polyelectrolyte mesh structure. As EMIM:TCB is added, the microgel interior adopts a more neutral polymer mesh structure as EMIM:TCB concentration is increased.

This paper presents an innovative approach to improving user experience in e-commerce platforms by integrating a personalized product recommendation system. The developed website enables users to search for products with optimized backend algorithms ensuring relevant search results. Additionally, a hybrid recommendation system combining content-based filtering and collaborative filtering is used to dynamically suggest related products based on user queries and behaviors. Realtime adaptation and feedback loops allow for continuous system improvement, while a personalized dashboard enhances user convenience. The control over aggregation pathways is a key requirement for present and future technologies, as it can provide access to a variety of sophisticated structures with unique functional properties. In this work, we demonstrate an unprecedented control over the supramolecular self-assembly of a semiconductive material, based on a naphthalenediimide core functionalized with phenyl−thiophene moieties at the imide termini, by trapping the molecules into different arrangements depending on the crystallization conditions. The control of the solvent evaporation rate enables the growth of highly elaborated hierarchical self-assembled structures: either in an energy-minimum thermodynamic state when the solvent is slowly evaporated forming needle-shaped crystals (polymorph α) or in a local energy-minimum state when the solvent is rapidly evaporated leading to the formation of nanofibers (polymorph β). The exceptional persistence of the kinetically trapped β form allowed the study and comparison of its characteristics with that of the stable α form, revealing the importance of molecular aggregation geometry in functional properties. Intriguingly, we found that compared to the thermodynamically stable α phase, characterized by a J-type aggregation, the β phase exhibits (i) an unusual strong blue shift of the emission from the chargetransfer state responsible for the solid-state luminescent enhancement, (ii) a higher work function with a "rigid shift" of the electronic levels, as shown by Kelvin probe force microscopy and cyclic voltammetry measurements, and (iii) a superior fieldeffect transistor mobility in agreement with an H-type aggregation as indicated by X-ray analysis and theoretical calculations.

Improvements in automatic speech recognition, along with the growing popularity of speech driven “assistants” in consumer electronics, indicate that this input modality will become increasingly relevant. Although good functionality is offered for word processing applications, this is not the case for highly structured content such as mathematical text or computer program code. In this paper we combine the principles of natural user interfaces with the concept of intuitive use, and adapt them for speech as the input modality in the context of editing content displayed on a screen. The resulting principles are used to inform design of the user interface of a specialist language editor for spoken mathematics.

Hitherto, inadequate individual, corporate and collective responses, and unsustainable consumer aspirations, collective lifestyles and growth ambitions suggest global warming and its consequences may soon become unstoppable. Corporate boards are running out of road in which to confront realities, review, reinvent and/or change direction, and act more decisively before it is too late. This article considers the challenges of confronting realities and misinformation, understanding likely impacts and the pursuit of possibilities, which may increasingly require collaboration and collective action and/or responses. Directors need to question, probe and look beneath the surface. Future impacts of global warming and climate change are often so heavily discounted that they fail to influence contemporary decisions to the extent that they should, while expectations of future and unproven technologies are often exaggerated. Directors might be faced with polarisation, misrepresentation and disinformation, and may need to disaggregate data to discern meaning.

Overall trends, averages and generalisations may not apply to a board’s situation and circumstances, and/or the specific challenges and opportunities it faces. Many directors are regularly exposed to opinions, claims and counterclaims, misinformation and disinformation, and contending versions of reality propounded by a diversity of sources and motivated by self and vested interests or hostile intent. They should balance macro and micro considerations as not all locations and sectors may be impacted by a general trend in the same way. They may also have to handle conflicting expectations and differing consequences and embrace positive possibilities while addressing negative impacts. We discuss the design of a virtual conversational palliative care coach that works with individuals during their last year of life to help them manage symptoms, reduce stress, identify and address unmet spiritual needs, and support advance care planning. We present the results of an experiment that features the reactions of older adults in discussing these topics with a virtual agent, and note the importance of discussing spiritual needs in the context of end-of-life conversations. We find that all participants are comfortable discussing these topics with an agent, and that their discussion leads to reductions in state and death anxiety, as well as significant increase in intent to create a last will and testament.

The term "natural" is employed to describe a wide range of novel interactive products and systems, ranging from gesture-based interaction to brain-computer interfaces and in marketing as well as in research. However, this terminology is problematic. It establishes an untenable dichotomy between forms of interaction that are natural and those that are not; it draws upon the positive connotations of the term and conflates the language of research with marketing lingo, often without a clear explanation of why novel interfaces can be considered natural; and it obscures the examination of the details of interaction that ought to be the concern of HCI researchers. We are primarily concerned with identifying the problem, but also propose two steps to remedy it: recognising that the terminology we employ in research has consequences, and unfolding and articulating in more detail the qualities of interfaces that we have hitherto labelled "natural".

Sustainable HCI attempts to shift focus beyond humans, to care for both ourselves and our environment. In this paper, we build on this growing interest and contribute with a design ethnography of urban farming. We focus on practices of observing and gathering data about the environment which we frame as 'noticing'. In our analysis, three approaches to noticing the environment were identified, and design suggestions were developed for each approach: Green Thumbs (control-oriented), Dirty Nails (sensibility-oriented) and BeeNoculars (appreciation-oriented). The design suggestions, presented as posters, focus on ways to improve the alignment of the acquisition and display of data with the identified approaches. We discuss two themes: the noticing and balancing of systemic relations and needs, and sensory-rich experiences of the environment. The paper contributes to a broader discussion in HCI of how technologies could create a different understanding of and relationship to the environment.

Human enhancement is one of the leading research topics in contemporary applied ethics. Interestingly, the widespread attention to the ethical aspects of future enhancement applications has generated misgivings. Are researchers who spend their time investigating the ethics of futuristic human enhancement scenarios acting in an ethically suboptimal manner? Are the methods they use to analyze future technological developments appropriate? Are institutions wasting resources by funding such research? In this article, I address the ethics of doing human enhancement ethics focusing on two main concerns. The Methodological Problem refers to the question of how we should methodologically address the moral aspects of future enhancement applications. The Normative Problem refers to what is the normative justification for investigating and funding the research on the ethical aspects of future human enhancement. This article aims to give a satisfactory response to both meta-questions in order to ethically justify the inquiry into the ethical aspects of emerging enhancement technologies.

The first computer in the world made by a human was mechanical and it was called difference engine developed by Charles babbage who is known as the father of the computer in 1822. It was a very basic computer which only performs some basic tasks like the calculations. It was the basic for all computers we use till today. In 1834 charles babbage invented the second computer It was called analytical engine by Charles babbage. It was purposed mechanical general purpose computer. It was a success to babbag's difference engine that was design for a simple mechanical computer. It works through a punch card insert in it with set of binary instructions then the engine performs some basic tasks on it. In 1840, Augusta Ada Byron suggests to Babbage that he use the binary system. She writes programs for the Analytical Engine. It was the first program written for a computer.

For a long-time HCI discourse has viewed ageing and elderly care through a medicalised lens in which care is broken down into distinct problems, such as activities of daily living and addressing accessibility problems. Increasingly, this approach is criticised within the HCI community. Adding to this critique, we asked non-experts to imagine the life of Lor, a 189 year old woman who needs support in her daily life, through an adapted story elicitation method The resulting stories present care as a network which is set against a backdrop of societal changes and environmental factors, such as climate change. In this paper, we distil the rich worlds developed in these stories into reflective questions to support designers to "stay with the trouble" of caregiving and reflect on their own work as well as creating novel grounds for the engagement with care technologies.

Polycrystalline Na 2 W 2 O 7 (anhydrous) was prepared by a solid-state reaction technique. The formation of the compound has been confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction studies and Raman spectroscopy. The unit cell structure of the material has been found to be orthorhombic of the Cmca space group. Complex impedance analysis of the material indicates the electrical conduction to be due only to the grain interior up to a temperature of 300 °C. Above 300 °C the contribution of the grain boundary to electrical conduction is more evident. The grain boundary resistance is found to decrease with increasing temperature. Impedance results also indicate that the material exhibits a negative temperature coefficient of resistance. The electrical processes in the material show temperature-dependent relaxation phenomena. The electrical conduction in the material is a thermally activated process governed by the release of space charge in close agreement with the observations made from impedance spectrum analysis. The dc conductivity of the material as evaluated from the complex impedance spectrum is observed to attain a maximum value of 1.16 × 10-6 S cm-1 at 425 °C. This is a very large increase, nearly four orders of magnitude, when compared with the room temperature conductivity of the material (3.99 × 10-10 S cm-1).

What is the future of computing? It is hard to predict. Most often there are disruptive technologies that change the direction, the market and derail a technology plan. So in examining the future of computing, we need to examine where we have been. This is not to say that we are returning to punch cards and 300 baud modems, but examining the obstacles of the past can show us a roadmap of the future and what emerging technologies may look like.

Monovalent ion (MOI) doping effect on the grain size and giant dielectric constant (ε ′ ~ 10 4) of lead free environment friendly NiO-based K x Ti 0.02 Ni 0.98-x O (KTNO, x = 0.04, 0.25, and 0.30) type ceramics have been investigated. Increasing K concentration (MOI) enhances the grain size along with the increase of ε ′ values. The dielectric constant of KTNO also increases with increase of the sintering time and temperature (within the range of our measurement) due to enhancement of crystalline size. The giant ε ′ value and the leakage current in KTNO show weak field dependent behavior. Estimated temperature coefficient of permittivity (TCP) of KTNO is very low (less than 6%). All these properties meet the requirements of the ceramics used in X7R EIA specification. High ε ′ in KTNO is attributed to the boundary layer mechanism.

Our use of everyday spaces continually transforms with the domestic technologies entering our homes. However, accommodating these technologies is especially challenging in historic neighborhoods as these spaces were built in eras suitable for different lifestyles. Understanding users' expectations living in this context could provide valuable opportunities to support occupants' everyday comfort and increase the built environments' lifecycle. Therefore, we conducted in-depth semi-structured interviews with 12 early-adopter residents in two historic neighborhoods to explore expectations towards future domestic spaces. Findings reveal four themes that cover individual values and neighborhood identity in shaping residents' expectations. We uncover three design directions for the field: (1) integration of location-specific multisensory experiences, (2) consideration of bodily interacted flexible and adaptable spaces, and (3) imagination of human-like interactions with domestic spaces. Research in HCI is increasingly investigating the role of technology in supporting meaningful and social activities to enhance the lived experiences of people with dementia. However, to further enrich the daily experiences in care, more insight is needed into how technology can directly promote social participation and pleasurable experiences in everyday care situations. This paper discusses the deployment of VITA and SAM: two research products that address the social and emotional needs of residents in day-today dementia care. We report how both products offered aesthetic and sensory enrichment, created new experiences in the everyday, and were integrated into the care environment. New and emerging technologies promise to revolutionize risk communication. The benefits of technology are discussed with regard to the components of a recently described warning process model. Examples are provided to illustrate how technology can potentially improve information accessibility and cognitive support. Design principles such as warning interactivity, dynamic modification and personalization are considered as potential applications of technology that should enhance warning effectiveness in future technology-based systems.

This article focuses on a two-layered supply chain comprising of a single vendor and single buyer policy for a single product which deteriorates with respect to time. To decrease the deterioration of a product, a buyer spends capital on preservation technology to preserve the item. The objective is to maximize the total profit of the supply chain with respect to cycle time and investment for preservation technology. The manufacturer production process is imperfect; It may shift from an in control state to an out of control state at any random time during a production run. Vendor follows lot for lot policy for replenishment produced to the buyer. The model is supported with numerical examples and also by an established scenario of the model. Sensitivity analysis is done to assume decision-making insights.

Improvements in automatic speech recognition, along with the growing popularity of speech driven “assistants” in consumer electronics, indicate that this input modality will become increasingly relevant. Although good functionality is offered for word processing applications, this is not the case for highly structured content such as mathematical text or computer program code. In this paper we combine the principles of natural user interfaces with the concept of intuitive use, and adapt them for speech as the input modality in the context of editing content displayed on a screen. The resulting principles are used to inform design of the user interface of a specialist language editor for spoken mathematics.

The term "natural" is employed to describe a wide range of novel interactive products and systems, ranging from gesture-based interaction to brain-computer interfaces and in marketing as well as in research. However, this terminology is problematic. It establishes an untenable dichotomy between forms of interaction that are natural and those that are not; it draws upon the positive connotations of the term and conflates the language of research with marketing lingo, often without a clear explanation of why novel interfaces can be considered natural; and it obscures the examination of the details of interaction that ought to be the concern of HCI researchers. We are primarily concerned with identifying the problem, but also propose two steps to remedy it: recognising that the terminology we employ in research has consequences, and unfolding and articulating in more detail the qualities of interfaces that we have hitherto labelled "natural".
