This intriguing book was first published in French in 2015 as L'Ombre du Monde: une anthropologie de la condition carcerale. It is great that it has been translated: the Englishspeaking world remains too ignorant of French penology. As I read it, I felt that I was going on a long train journey with a wise and chatty French professor: the book is full of vignettes of life and snatches of conversations, all grounded in a huge range of global academic sources. Fassin is a French anthropologist and sociologist, currently the James D. Wolfensohn Professor of Social Science at Princeton. He came to prisons quite late in his working life, having started out as a medical doctor, moving through public health to anthropology. This book is the result of seven months spent as a researcher in a French maison d'arret (short-term prison) over a period of four years. The book starts with an intriguing preface, a discourse on 'a world of prison'. He comments on the paradox that this site of closed confinement is a space open to research: permission to carry out research in French prisons is easily won. He explores many extraordinary facts: driving without a driving licence (which would have received a fine in the 1990s) is the cause of one in ten incarcerations in France today; imprisonment for cannabis is going up, whilst sentences for embezzlement are going down. Fassin suggests that in recent decades, the smaller the offence, the greater the escalation in penal harshness. After the Preface, the Prologue. It starts in a tribunal correctionnel (criminal court), with la comparution immediate (a fast-track summary trial), where a string of defendants receive short custodial sentences. How wonderful that a book on prisons starts with a court scene: too many English prison anthropologies or sociologies sideline the law. This book is dense with law. In the Prologue, 'Where it all begins', Fassin points out that 'prison is the product of the work of the police and the judges, governments and parliamentary representatives, journalists and film directors, and even society as a whole, through the fiction known as "public opinion"' (p.11). Prison is not separate from the social world: it is its disturbing shadow. Next there's an introduction offering a dose of Foucault and Durkheim to help the reader understand the expanding prison and the social composition of the prison population, as an indicator of what and who society thinks should be punished. Chapter 1 continues this theme: in order to understand prison, we have to know who is locked up, for what reason and for how long. Fassin argues that the politics of fear in recent years has focused public attention on insecurity rather than on inequality, so that we have come to accept short terms of imprisonment, without really questioning whether or not they act to the detriment of the social integration of the individuals involved. In Chapter 2, Fassin confronts one of France's most confusing 'well-kept public secrets': the 'voluntary ignorance' about the over-representation of ethnic minorities in French prisons. Explanations are easy to trace, and some of them creditable: fear of labelling people and an ethical concern about the possible consequences of exploring it.

Aim: Provide web-based education for nurses in the Republic of Moldova in response to the influx of Ukrainian refugees. Methods: The North Carolina-Moldova Nursing Collaborative delivered just-in-time education for Moldovan nurses who had to provide immediate response to the influx of refugees after Russia invaded Ukraine. Nurses with expertise in refugee and emergency care developed and delivered continuing education via webinars, with simultaneous translation into Romanian and Russian. The webinars were recorded and posted to a YouTube channel created for the project, with links for access disseminated to nurses throughout Moldova by the Nurses Association of the Republic of Moldova. Results: Ten webinars were developed and recorded between March 10 and May 18, 2022. To date, the Romanian and Russian versions of the webinars have been accessed for viewing over 842 times. Feedback from Moldovan nurse leaders indicated that the webinars provided education on topics that were relevant and novel for the nursing audience. Conclusions: International collaboration and internet technology enabled us to provide just-in-time education to Moldovan nurses faced with caring for an influx of Ukrainian refugees seeking safety.

This paper explores the management of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil radicalizing Foucault's notion of governmentality. While dominant scholarship has been interpreting the human tragedy of the outbreak in Brazil in terms of necropolitics and Bolsonaro's populist rhetoric, the present work highlights other dimensions. It shows that the management of the pandemic was deployed to govern the conduct of the Brazilian population. This paper detects novel economies of medical truth, obedience, and salvation. It also examines the struggles and (bio)political resistance of Brazil's vulnerable communities. Interventions and support should be tailored to address the specific needs of different groups, particularly women, younger individuals, and those with worsened financial and employment statuses.

We argue, drawing on the work of Didier Fassin, that the right to health can be understood as an essential part of a radical politics of life. Since the right to health implies fostering the wellbeing of individuals in a way that is structural, progressive and non-discriminatory, the right not only problematises the 'governmentality' approach to power but allows push-back against statist and market discourses through a specific phenomenology of right. The discourse of rights-like the pandemic itself-oscillates between general and particular in a way that makes normative responses unstable. Nonetheless it is this dialectic that is characteristic of human rights discourse and allows a right to health to be the proper response to pandemic without it being subsumed within neoliberal logic. A politics of life is a multi-focussed analysis of life, health and society potentially resisting the appropriation of biological life by neoliberalism.

Resumen: En contraste con los ensayos filosóficos de Giorgio Agamben y Espósito Roberto, en este artículo discutiré algunas de las recientes contribuciones antropológicas al estudio de las políticas de la vida. Divido el escrito en cuatro partes. En la primera, ofrezco una visión sintética del concepto de biopolítica, tal y como Foucault la había definido a partir de la distinción entre normación y normalización. Acto seguido, expongo a la crítica etnográfica las revisiones realizadas por Agamben y Espósito. El tercer epígrafe versa sobre las etnografías del biopoder y de la biolegitimidad realizadas por Fassin y Petryna. Normación y normalización Desde 1974 y hasta el final de los años setenta, Foucault desarrolló sus análisis de la biopolítica y el biopoder, términos empleados por él casi indistintamente, en relación a cuatro ejes temáticos: el surgimiento de la medicina clínica y social (2010), la sexualidad moderna (2005), el racismo biológico (2003) y la tradición del liberalismo político (2006a y 2007). Cet article propose une reflexion autour d'une forme particuliere de gouvernement des corps collectifs en dialogue avec les travaux de Fassin et Butler: l'encadrement biopolitique des sujets et des groupes defavorises autour de la mise en oeuvre des politiques sociales. L'idéologie ultralibérale sous-tend en effet certains outils, concepts et théories sur lesquels repose la communication organisationnelle. Le cas de la théorie des parties-prenantes est notamment développé. Argument La communication organisationnelle aime présenter son côté brillant et humaniste, son attachement à l'authenticité, dialogue, écoute, diversité, reconnaissance, responsabilité. Mais elle sait qu'elle a aussi un côté obscur, autoritaire, escamoté, que tout cela doit être au service des intérêts de l'entreprise, ou plutôt des actionnaires. Se caracteriza la vulnerabilidad social ante el peligro de sequía, a partir de los indicadores que establece la metodología cubana para el estudio de dicho fenómeno, a la vez que se determinan los riesgos de desastres a nivel territorial y se ofrecen las percepciones de la población, acorde a grupos por niveles de percepción. Como resultados se tiene que, los mayores valores de vulnerabilidad social se identifican en las provincias: Pinar del Río, Holguín y Camagüey. La población cubana expuesta a la sequía asciende a 9.041.449; en tanto, las provincias con mayor población afectada son Santiago de Cuba y Holguín. Por otro lado, la percepción de la población respecto al peligro de sequía es media, y se identifican diferencias en cuanto a las características de la población.

Since the so-called 'refugee crisis', research on migration in the Euro-Mediterranean region has highlighted the entanglement of humanitarian and securitarian logics in the transformation of the EU border regime, with most attention focused on rescue and push-back operations at sea and systems of detention, selection and reception on land. This article moves beyond the point of arrival to examine how humanitarianism has also been implicated in the management of migrant labour in agriculture. Focusing on the tomato districts of southern Italy, the article interrogates recent legislative and emergency measures devised to tackle labour violations and to facilitate the reproduction of the workforce. Measures have included the establishment of impromptu worker shelters run by humanitarian organizations and the recourse to criminal law to combat gangmasters and to assuage public opinion. By developing the conceptual framework of humanitarian exploitation, the article illustrates how humanitarian government is functional both to the regulation of the migrant workforce and to the maintenance of the industrial agri-food system.

The international debate concerning biopolitics has been a global impact during the last three decades. After Michel Foucault’s introduction of the term in the philosophical discussion in the Seventies, the problematic has been particularly developed in the italian philosophy of the Nineties. Authors like Giorgio Agamben and Antonio Negri significantly contribute to define a perimeter that, if represents an important evolution of the foucauldian investigation, constitutes only one among many approaches to this issue. In the new century, indeed, a multiplicity of new positions about biopolitics emerged: if Agamben and Negri, even in a very distinct way, share the idea of a surplus of the biopolitical body (individual and collective) with respect to the forms of political power, the second line of biopolitics, also in a pluralistic way, emphasizes the problem of the forms of life, of the protection of life and of its affirmation through, and not against, the institutions. The philosophical studies of Roberto Esposito and Miguel Vatter, the sociological research of Thomas Lemke and the medical investigation of Didier Fassin, among others, claim that the individual and collective body is a creation of political power, rather than a excess, autonomous with respect to the political apparatuses. In this view life is a political construction, and the forms of this creation affirm or negate life itself. This essay intends to reconstruct this transformation: in the first part we
will describe the anti-institutional foundation of the biopolitical philosophy
especially in the italian context, then we will analyze the positions that provoke a change in this theoretical framework. Finally, also taking into account recent developments, we will illustrate some possible evolutions of the whole problematic.

En este artículo, se parte de los conceptos de biopolítica y biolegitimidad, trabajados por Michel Foucault y Didier Fassin respectivamente, aplicados al proceso de asilo y al reconocimiento de la condición de refugiado, con el objetivo de demostrar un hilo conductor entre el ejercicio de gobierno de la vida y el reconocimiento de un valor de la misma. Tomar como base el asilo y refugio, permite atender al proceso mediante el cual se introduce a un sujeto bajo la esfera de control de un Estado, que habrá de proporcionarle una protección en el caso de que quede demostrada su desprotección previa. Analizar esa continuidad entre ambos conceptos que hacen referencia a distintas maneras de entender las políticas de la vida, sirve para entender la manera en la que los Estados entienden su responsabilidad respecto de los sujetos.

This article presents a political reflection on HIV-aids, structured in four moments: First, an approach to life policies where the action of necropolitics, bio power, biopolitics and bio privacy in relation to HIV-aids is revealed; second, it addresses a political anthropology of the body, which warns of the different forms of power, violence and truth experienced by people living with HIV-AIDS; third, an approach to the way in which a moral economy of punishment is reproduced, where normative, medical-sanitary, elements of life, body and society are articulated; Fourth, it is proposed to repoliticize HIV-aids, in order to provide inputs to build a different social order for people living with that reality.

Abstract:

Social and transcultural psychiatry, understood as a systemic understanding of historically and culturally situated relationships, the social determinants of health and their cognate approaches and studies, now compel psychiatry to consider the political. This seminar argues against the Western dichotomy since Aristotle of natural and political, private and public life, allowing the state to politicize biological life, creating a “biopolitics,” employing Giorgio Agamben’s historical-philosophical investigations. We will examine two figures in 20th century psychiatry – Frantz Fanon and Franco Basaglia – in their call for revolution and reform in psychiatry and society and contrast their positions with the political uses and abuses of psychiatry including Didier Fassin’s critique of humanitarian reason and Martin La Roche’s call for therapeutic activism. Finally, we conclude on the implications for a new politics and a new psychiatry.

La vie est une réalité exceptionnellement difficile à cerner, à la croisée d'un phénomène biologique, qui permet de la réfléchir au niveau des populations, et d'un phénomène vécu, qui permet plutôt de l'appréhender au niveau des trajectoires biographiques individuelles. De plus, bien que le fait de vivre et le fait de mourir soient communs à l'ensemble des êtres humains, la distribution des chances de vie et la répartition des risques de mortalité font partie des inégalités les plus durables et les plus lourdes de conséquences dans nos sociétés. Dans La vie. Mode d'emploi critique, le sociologue, anthropologue et médecin Didier Fassin offre une réflexion en trois temps sur l'inégalité des vies, cette notion pouvant contribuer, selon lui, à l'analyse de plusieurs phénomènes sociaux. La production contemporaine de vies inégales est ainsi abordée dans l'ouvrage à partir des formes de vie, des éthiques de la vie et des politiques de la vie.

Qu'est-ce que le camp, qu'est-ce qu'un réfugié ? Qu'est-ce que c'est, survivre ? En faisant un détour par les conditions du camp propre vécues par Pimo Lévi, ce mémoire de master en Anthropologie questionne la condition du réfugié dans la Jungle de Calais.

Comment les organismes jugent-ils les réfugiés, et comment adoptent-ils cette identité auprès de leur communauté de l'instant, celle du camp ? Si la condition de réfugié dépendant de loi, de la convention de Genève, de facteurs dits objectifs, elle dépend également de facteurs psychiques propres à l'individu migrants. C'est le traumatisme et la mémoire traumatique, condition d'obtention de ce statut.

Dès lors, comment ces réfugiés construisent-ils leur identité ? Comment valorisent-ils leur mémoire traumatique ? Il s'agira d'analyser ces questions au travers du concepts d'économie morale de Didier Fassin, apportant une dimension économique à la morale. Mais aussi de comprendre le cadre du camp dans sa dimension tant locale que globale. Ainsi, le réfugié, dans le camp, est à la fois un sujet cognitif et social soumis à diverses définitions.

Este director de estudios en la prestigiosa Es­ cuela de Altos Estudios en Ciencias Sociales de París es actualmente cate­ drático invitado en el Institute for Advanced Study de la Universidad de Princeton. Tras estudiar la construcción social de los problemas sanitarios (Brucker y Fassin 1989; Dozon y Fassin 2001; Fassin 1996), ha trabajado sobre las desigual­ dades sociales, las categorías elaboradas para designarlas, las maneras de dar cuenta de ellas y las políticas de lucha contra estas. Se ha interesado igualmente por la inmigración y los fenómenos de racialización tanto en Francia como en el extranjero (Fassin y Fassin 2006). Más recientemente, ha orientado sus investiga­ ciones hacia la economía moral, es decir, hacia las configuraciones de normas y valores vigentes en los mundos sociales para fundar prácticas políticas. El trata­ miento de la pobreza, de la inmigración y del asilo ha sido analizado desde esta perspectiva. Más ampliamente, Fassin ha llevado a cabo una reflexión sobre el trabajo moral en el gobierno de los seres humanos y sobre la vida como objeto de las po­ líticas contemporáneas (Fassin y Eideliman 2012). Sus últimas investigaciones se inscriben en una nueva óptica que intenta analizar el lugar de los sentimientos, juicios y prácticas morales en las relaciones entre las instituciones públicas (po­ licía, justicia, cárceles, servicios sociales, servicios sanitarios) y sus públicos en 1 Profesor de Sociología en la Universidad del País Vasco (UPV-EHU) e investigador asociado en el Social and Business Research Laboratory (SBRlab), Universidad Rovira i Virgili. Es autor de 30 libros, entre los cuales se encuentran Las políticas públicas en cuestión (Jaén: Universidad de Jaén, 2010) y La Communauté Pays Basque. RESUMEN: Teniendo como punto de partida el problema de la libertad en el trabajo tardío de Michel Foucault, este artículo busca indagar sobre el concepto de forma de vida desarrollado por Giorgio Agamben y Didier Fassin. Particularmente, desde las luchas por la vivienda en la ciudad de Santiago y contra décadas de contaminación industrial en Puchuncaví, este escrito busca reflexionar sobre la capacidad heurística del concepto de forma de vida. Metodológicamente, el presente ensayo ofrece una interpretación teórica sobre el concepto de forma de vida para luego transitar al análisis de estudios empíricos, teniendo como clave de lectura la constitución de formas de vida en tanto articuladores de prácticas de resistencia. En ese sentido, se argumentará que: i) las tensiones constitutivas que atraviesan este concepto, lejos de imposibilitarlo, nos permiten observar dinámicas de resistencia invisibilizadas por los enfoques tradicionales, ii) las formas de vida, en tanto espacios de resistencia, se articulan a partir de la posibilidad o bien la promesa de vivir de otro modo y iii) se destaca el luchado vivir y el vivir cuidando como dos de las posibles maneras en que se expresan las formas de vida.

À partir de l’analyse de certaines images photographiques liées au programme de politique publique Bolsa Família, mis en place par le gouvernement Lula (Parti des Travailleurs) en 2003, nous montrons des dynamiques politiques créées par ces images, dans les opérations qui la définissent et qui influencent l'interprétation de ce qui est vu. Ces opérations peuvent être exprimées au sein et en dehors de la sphère artistique, elles préconfigurent des énoncés qui font et défont des discours et des récits entre le visible et l'invisible, entre le dicible et le silence. A partir des approches de Butler, Rancière, Foucault et Fassin, nous montrons tant les opérations de cadrage qui distinguent entre des vies misérables et admirables, que d'autres modalités qui ouvrent des lignes d'appropriation, de contre-identifications et de devenir nomades.

En el proyecto Homo sacer, Agamben concede un lugar de especial importancia a aquello que él llama "precaución arqueológica". A partir de un análisis transversal de los primeros volúmenes de la investigación, junto con Signatura rerum y sin perder de vista el conjunto del proyecto, sostenemos que la arqueología, tal y como la comprende y desarrolla Agamben, es insuficiente para dar cuenta del orden de fenómenos y planos de análisis cuya tematización ha proyectado el italiano, y proponemos una precaución etnográfica como complemento y posible clave de reorientación y apropiación de la investigación agambeana.
