The article presents a critical response to Quentin Meillassoux’s essay Science Fiction and Extro-Science Fiction and proves the impossibility of “fiction of worlds outside-science.” A reconstruction of Meillasoux’s three types of XSF-worlds followed by a demonstration of their failure. Author suggests a shift of emphasis in the notion of “science fiction” from the first word to the second: this move draws attention to the constitutive role of fictitiousness as a characteristic of XSF-worlds rather than their scientific nature. Referring to the philosopher’s earlier works, the author performs a “Ptolemy’s Revenge:” fictional worlds are the product of imagination, which implies the impossibility of decentring thought relative to extro-science fiction. Both classic and contemporary works of the SF are used as illustrations, so the text will be of interest not only to speculative realism researchers, but also to sci-fi fans.

This study unearths, examines and documents the origin, peopling,
and settlements of north east Yoruba land by the Okun, a subgroup
of Yoruba nation. The paper submits that the origin of human
settlements in Okun-land cannot be adequately explained by oral
sources alone, therefore the research applies poly-methodical
approach by seeking clear understanding of the issue, making
concrete plan of action, executing the action and reflective synthesis
of sources and scientific data. Anthropology, archaeology,
archaeolinguistics and oral traditions are the primary sources of
research. Data gathering came from in-depth interviews from key
informants, archaeological excavations and literature reviews.
These methodologies are germane to the study of traditional
societies and are considered critical to the study due to their
reliability in providing verifiable scientific sources for the research.
Analysis was based on anthropological, archaeological and
historical deconstructionism. Findings of the research indicate early
antiquity for human habitation in northeast Yoruba-land, and
multiple versions of oratures namely autochthonous tradition,
monogenesis and polygenesis. Archaeology reveals Late Stone Age
settlements, anthropology shows coalescing of aboriginal and
migrant groups and archaeolinguistics reveals proto-Yoruba
existence within the area. The research is important for its
contributions to early history and its ability to distil traditional
historiography of the Okun. The study concludes that early human
habitation in northeast Yoruba land dates to antiquity and that the formation of present Okun is a result of lengthy processes of
assimilation and coalescing of autochthonous and migrant groups.

Are we satisfied with the conventional media for anthropological research and publication? The question is obviously not a new one. Even before anthropological research and scholarship had consolidated its modern standards of fieldwork, theory, and ethnography in the first decades of the twentieth century, anthropological writing was already part of an ecology of recordings and representations of other ways of being human that ranged from colonial propaganda to exotic-pornographic photography to early filmic and acoustic experiments in salvage ethnography. All absorbed and reproduced the politics of race and empire around them, just as early anthropological writing did. Films like Edward Curtis's In the Land of the Head Hunters (1914) and Robert Flaherty's Nanook of the North (1922) offered, despite their myriad flaws, early glimpses of the potentialities of ethnographic film and indigenous media (see Ginsburg 2002). Природный детерминизм фантастики Аннотация: Статья представляет собой главу из монографии. Ее автор рассматривает фантастику как часть художественной литературы и опровергает негативное отношение к ней со стороны многих читателей, критиков и писателей. Он также показывает сложность создания фантастических произведений, которые, с одной стороны, должны привлекать читателей необычным техническим антуражем, а с другой, повествовать о человеческой драме. В его представлении, фантастическая литература и так называемая «мэйнстримовская» литература в принципе различаются только степенью вымысла. Соответственно, лучшие произведения этого жанра вышли из своеобразного литературного «гетто» и стали частью мировой литературы.

Ang unang tatlong sanaysay ay mga papel na isinumite ng mga magaaral sa aking gradwadong klase na Antropolohiya 218 (Seminar in Philippine Prehistory) sa Unibersidad ng Pilipinas (UP) Diliman noong Ikalawang Semestre, Akademikong Taong 2017-2018, at ang ikaapat naman ay panayam ng isang kaguro sa Don Belong De Los Reyes Lecture Series ng Folklore Studies Program sa Kolehiyo ng Agham Panlipunan at Pilosopiya ng UP Diliman noong 2014. Apat silang awtor na tumugon at matiyagang naglinang ng kani-kanilang paksa upang sagutin ang tanong na, "ano ang saysay ng sinaunang bayan sa kasalukuyang panahon?" Ang gumagabay na prinsipyo ng pagsasama-sama ng mga arkikulo rito ay ang kagustuhang pag-ugnayin ang sinaunang bayan at kasalukuyan. This paper reports about the result of defining Y-DNA haplogroup for a medieval Russian man, whose remains were excavated in Radonezh area. The burial is dated by the 16th-17th centuries, which was the periods of Russian Tsardom and the Time of Troubles. Radonezh was the centre of the Orthodox Church. The paper describes the burials, genotyping method, and the results. The obtained Y-DNA haplogroup is R1a1, typical for the Slavic population of Russia.

Le corps, issu du latin corpus, constitue la partie matérielle et tangible des êtres animés. Il peut aussi, par synecdoque, désigner la personne tout entière. Le pouvoir, terme également issu du latin, renvoie à la capacité d’agir, mais surtout à celle de gouverner, contraindre, discipliner. Les Grecs et les Romains disposaient d’un vocabulaire étendu et nuancé renvoyant à cette notion : archè, dynamis, energeia, potestas..

Los videojuegos como productos culturales, encierran toda una potencialidad en clave de significados y otorgan posibilidades de manifestar posiciones enunciativas divergentes por parte de colectividades no hegemónicas. El objetivo de este ensayo es analizar la relación que existe entre el consumo cultural de videojuegos y la construcción de subjetividades en los jugadores hispanoamericanos. Se trata de una investigación documental a partir de la búsqueda de publicaciones científicas, a fin de seleccionar los artículos con mayores índices de impacto, que abordaron la temática en cuestión. Se observó que prevalecen los géneros de videojuegos de acción y aventura, de disparos en primera y tercera persona con narrativas mítico-heroicas para que los usuarios trasciendan en una situación épica en el marco resistencia-poder entre jugadores norteamericanos angloparlantes y latinoamericanos hispanohablantes generando dinámicas de exclusión migratoria en el espacio virtual. Se concluye, que las subjetividades de los video-jugadores se construyen mediante las interrelaciones que se producen entre los sujetos y la dinámica en la que se desarrolla el juego, incorporando a su constructo tanto valores como sentimientos y significados.

The article considers such type of archaeological monuments of Tsarevokokshaysk as historical necropolises. On the territory of the city, the Voskresenski, Entry into Jerusalem, Tikhvin and Troitski historical necropolises have been archaeologically studied. These archaeological sites cover the period from the foundation of the Tsarev town on Kokshaga River to the beginning of the 20th century and they are the burial place of both residents of the town and the surrounding villages. Brief information about historical necropolises, their localization, dating, a brief description of the main features of monuments, funeral rites and inventory are presented.

'Scientific' archaeology advocated by mainstream American archaeologists since the 1960s has tended to narrow 'science' to what Kuhn termed normal science, that is, research constrained by a ruling paradigm. This paradigm is based on the Myth of Columbus legitimating European invasions, conquests, and dispossessions of American nations by asserting that until October 1492, the Americas were a wilderness inhabited by savages. European international law held that Christians had the right to invade non-Christian nations and convert them by force if necessary. American schools teach that American Indians lacked the arts of civilization, and this early socialization persists in archaeologists' models of pre-contact American nations. The paper looks at the "Core system" of the discipline, a recent interest in 'historicizing' the pre-contact American past, and the issue of transoceanic contacts before Columbus.

In recent years, the so-called historical reenactments have become quite popular. Over time were formed groups of its "fans" as well as critics. Thus, different research views on this phenomenon are a logical fact. By coincidence of life circumstances, I am in a position to allow a specific study of historical reenactments "from within", because in addition to being an ethnologist and museum curator, I am also an active historic reconstructor who participates in reenactments.

In this study I am looking trough six historical reenactments in which I have directly participated, recreating three types of personalities – an ordinary unmarried young man from pre-industrial Bulgarian society, a clergyman from the Middle Ages and the Revival and a Bulgarian volunteer from the Russo-Turkish Liberation War (1877 – 1878). My target is, based on the "experience", to look for the parameters of merging the present with the past in historical reenactments. What is the main reason for a modern person like me to look for a merger with a person from a bygone historical period and is it possible to do more than "playing" in two events happening simultaneously – "once there" and "here and now". To answer this question, I use the method of personal history and critical self-reflection, analyzing the personal experience.

Findings of structures remains discovered during excavations on Medieval Mongolian Sites in Eastern Trans-Baikal Region were summarized in the article. They were excavated during exploration of Alestui Mansion, at Khirkhira fortress, as well as at Konduy town site. The similar findings at Sutai Mansion in Buryatia, at Den-Terek fortress in Tuva, Karakorum, Shangdu, at Avraga fortress in Mongolia can be drawn on for comparison. In addition to traditional archaeological methods of the material investigation, an anatomical study of wood has been accomplished at Federal Scientific Center of the East Asia Terrestrial Biodiversity FEBRAS (Vladivostok). The study results evidence that some of samples collected belongs to Pinaceae, and one of them is the wood of Larix gmelinii or Dahurian Larch, vegetated in this region. Despite of rarity and fragmentariness of this kind of sources on Medieval sites of Central Asia and Far East, it was found out that the wood of local origin was utilized by the Mongols for monumental objects construction. This research is only a part of work on construction materials investigation of Medieval Mongolian Archaeological Culture.

Las investigaciones alrededor de los videojuegos se presentan como un espa-cio vigente, novedoso y en constante desarrollo. Con el fin de aportar desde una visión latinoamericana y de género a la discusión, este trabajo se enfoca en proponer un análisis inicial sobre la situación de las mujeres jóvenes que juegan  y  participan  de  esta  actividad,  ya  sea  profesional  o  casualmente,  a  partir de una exhaustiva revisión de artículos científicos y material audiovi-sual realizado sobre el tema. Los resultados se han dividido en cuatro subca-tegorías: exclusión y estereotipos de género; identidad gamer; participación de mujeres en e-sports y mujeres competidoras en equipos profesionales y casuales; y recepción del discurso masculino hegemónico. Finalmente se re-copilan algunas reflexiones y preguntas por parte de los investigadores, las cuales buscan brindar posibles rutas de estudio en los estudios latinoameri-canos y locales de los videojuegos.

The present work engages with a comparative study of the Oraon Folklore and their Rock Art for assessing how both these genres seemingly record the geo-cultural history of Oraon origin, their forced migrations and their current state of habitations in another Indian state Jharkhand. It attempts to establish a relation between archaeological data available in the form of rock art supplemented by written accounts and local traditions wherever possible. Based on field works, personal interactions with local inhabitants, especially on important events like, marriage, festivals, rituals etc., and archeological scrutiny of rock art available in the Oraons' previous habitation, i.e., the Kaimur Region in current Indian state of Bihar, the paper attempts to expose the historical value and cultural parallelism of Oraons' folk narratives and rock art. The paper strongly believes that both these genres conspicuously display the cultural history of a marginalized tribe that has undergone several historical and cultural ordeals. Besides this, the paper also offers, for the first time, an English translation of Oraons' oral folklore, adhering to the interdisciplinary approach of this paper. However, most significantly, the paper in its attempt to trace the continuity of rock art in this Kaimur Region also becomes an addition to the domain of ethno-rock art studies.

This paper argues that the category "chiefdoms" is a colonialist academic construction applied to non-Western societies to place them subordinate to Western imperialist conquerors.  The paper was rejected in 2003 by two principal anthropological journals as "too political".

摘要：本文基于2003年、2014-2018年对阿尔哈拉河岩画的田野研究，关于辨识文字符号和字素的信息被纳入学术研究之中。一部分字素用红色颜料书写，其余则用黑色颜料。2003年，在其中一处岩壁表面发现了黑色颜料涂写的字素，并形成了一个完整的结构——文书，由三垂列文字组成，每列分别有7、10、7个字素。2004年，有学者提出，这一文书由属于女真文字的字符书写。2014年，这一基于历史与考古学材料的观点得到了语言学上的确认，文书被考释为女真文书的样本，并被翻译。根据其日期，可知文书创作于公元1127年12月1日（格里高利历），这证实了阿尔哈拉河岩壁题记系学术界迄今所知最早的女真文文书。文书出现了其作者姓名——申忒鄰，同时还包含了关于其于1127年12月1日来到“塔里安朵谋克”（军事行政区）的信息。可以确定的是，手书墨书题记并不是唯一的，另有一些红色颜料的手书字素形成线条结构和文书。本文首次公布了“红色”字素组群中的内容，并论证其性质为女真文字。研究成果证实，阿尔哈拉题记考古遗址包含了女真文书，这一珍贵史料补充了关于女真文字、地名学、社会历史及其文化传播等信息。

Due to its unique geographical environment, the northern (or left) bank of the Amur River (Heilongjiang River) was an important area for the migration, movement, settlement and integration of different ethnic groups. The mixing and integration of various ethnic groups greatly affected the anthropological characteristics and structure of ethnic groups and cultural traditions. From the early Iron Age to the late Middle Ages, archaeological cultures such as the Bolce, Mikhailovka, Troitsky
type, Nyefield type, Amur Jurchen, and Vladimirovka cultures revealed the complex and diverse history of the origin, evolution, and interaction of early ancestors of the Manchu, Shiwei, Heishuimohe, Sumo-mohe, Jurchen, Daur, Ducher, Tungus, and other ethnic groups of the Amur region.

В англоязычной гуманитарной науке обособление исследований популярной ли-тературы (popular fiction studies) в широком поле работ о популярной культуре (popular culture studies) началось в 1980-е гг. 1 сегодня это направление представ-ляет собой развитую академическую «индустрию», в которой уживаются разнооб-разные дисциплинарные традиции и подходы. среди них выделяются несколько основных: анализ текстов и литературных институтов в контексте социоэкономи-ческих отношений; социоэтнографический анализ практик чтения и читательских сообществ (сообщество при этом понимается широко-как локальная читатель-ская группа и как нация, как реальная и как воображаемая категория); социаль-ная и культурная история популярных жанров; жанровый и нарратологический анализ текстов, относящихся к сегменту массового производства, с учетом специ-фики социального и культурного воображаемого. Представители этой дисциплины фокуси руются прежде всего на взаимозависимости, существующей между текстом, контекстами его бытования («использования» читателями) в глобальном прост-ранстве, читательской субъективностью и областью воображаемого, опосредующей эстетическое восприятие и оценку.

Aside from complexity measured in levels of political integration, societies as systems of social institutions have another fundamental characteristic that can be called a “basic principle of societal organization.” The principle of organization a society embodies depends on the way its institutions are arranged with respect to one another. Two basic principles can be distinguished: heterarchy—the relation of elements to one another when they are unranked or can be ranked in different ways (as coined by Crumley), and its opposite, homoarchy,—a condition in society in which relationships in most contexts are ordered mainly according to one principal hierarchical relationship. Homoarchy and heterarchy represent the most universal “ideal” (generalized) principles and basic trajectories of socio-cultural organization. There are no universal evolutionary stages: cultures can be (generally) heterarchical or homoarchical having an equal level of complexity. A culture can change its basic organizational principle without transition to another complexity level. Alternativeness also exists within each of the types. So, the heterarchy—homoarchy dichotomy runs throughout the whole of human history: it is observable on all levels of social complexity in all historical periods and culture areas, including the globalized world of our time. Transformations in the ways social institutions and their sets, societal subsystems, are ranked (homoarchically or hetrarchically) on the one hand and changes in the overall cultural complexity on the other are two different, largely unrelated processes.

The second volume of academic papers “The Genoese Gazaria and the Golden Horde” is dedicated to the memory of an outstanding scholar, archaeologist, historian and numismatic, founder of the Russian School of Golden Horde archaeology, Professor of Moscow State University G. A. Fedorov-Davydov. By this volume, we wanted to address a few key issues raised in historical and archaeological studies of Byzantium, Genoese Gazaria and Golden Horde. Issue number one: we want to demonstrate possibilities for integration of different types of sources while studying broad historical problems through archaeological methods; number two - searching new ways to elucidation and understanding of different narratives of Eurasian medieval history through material culture; and number three - identification of specific features in material manifestations of vital activities by states, as a whole, and by their local regions, in particular. The articles collected in the second volume mainly address historical, geographical and archaeological studies of the vast Mongol Empire, which functioned across Eurasia in 12th-14th centuries. Having appeared in the 12th century, it then got divided into a number of new states, which, in their turn, were to cardinally change the political map of the Old World.

Белгород-Днестровская крепость -один из самых известных и в то же время загадочных памятников средневековой фортификации. В монографии рассматривается весь накопленный к данному времени комплекс доку ментальных источников по истории крепости, а также привлекаются результаты авторских многолетних полевых историко-архитектурных исследований крепостных стен и башен. В результате в строительной истории крепости было выявлено 7 основных периодов: от появления старого замка (цитадели) во втором десятилетии XV в. до османской реконструкции крепости в конце XVIII в., существенно изменившей ее облик.

CULTURAL ARCHAEOLOGY OF VIDEO GAMES: between nostalgic discourse, gamer experience and technological innovation En este trabajo, se presentara una historia de los videojuegos como una innovación más allá de una forma de entretenimiento, ofreciendo razones acerca de por qué es importante conocer e investigar su historia en relación a sus contextos sociales y culturales. Haciendo énfasis en la importancia que los usuarios tienen a la hora de crear videojuegos a través de su experiencia, cuestionando la masculinidad construida en los primeros videojuegos y la ausencia, o menor participación, del género femenino en las primeras décadas. El contexto social y cultural en que nacieron aquellos videojuegos es básico para entender la difusión y la popularidad que obtuvieron en los años '80 y sobre todo, en los '90. El objetivo de este trabajo es identificar las estrategias de comunicación y de información respecto a los videojuegos antes de la llegada de Internet, en especial la forma y el cómo se compartía esta información en el contexto español. En la primera parte introducimos el marco teórico y metodológico en que se basa esta investigación a través del concepto de arqueología cultural. En la segunda parte presentamos los relatos construidos por los usuarios para analizar las experiencias del juego y la forma de compartirlo, utilizando los conceptos de playformance y playworld. Para finalizar cuestionando la identidad del gamer como sujeto masculino, blanco y joven de clase media-alta. In this paper, it is presented a videogames history as an innovation beyond a form of entertainment, offering reasons why it is important to know and investigate its history in relation to their social and cultural contexts. Marking the importance that users have when creating video games through their experience, questioning masculinity constructed in the first era of videogames and no or less participation of the female gender in the early decades. The social and cultural context in which those games were born is basic to understanding the spread and gained popularity in the '80s and especially in the '90s. The objective of this study is to identify communication strategies and information about the videogame before the arrival of the Internet and how information was shared in the Spanish context. In the first part we introduce the theoretical and methodological framework in which this research is based through the concept of cultural archeology. In the second part we present stories built by users to analyze the experiences of the game and how to share it, using the concepts of playformance and playworld. To finish questioning the identity of the gamer as a male subject, young white and upper middle class.

Indigenous futures are not only vital for Aboriginal people; they also provide valuable insight into global challenges. Building on Indigenous futurisms scholarship on Native science-fiction films, I engage recent Indigenous Australian video projects that draw more subtly on futures to illustrate how and why they articulate generative hope in the postapocalyptic present.

This collection of essays engages the ways in which anthropological understandings of Indigenous media can be expanded and reimagined through a focus on futurity. Throughout, the contributors pose two distinct yet interconnected questions: What does the future of Indigenous media hold? And, how is the future itself being increasingly asserted through Indigenous media production? In a sense, then, the collection serves as both retrospective and opening. We reflect on the history of Indigenous media scholarship in tracing the trajectory of emerging forms and content, while also considering how the future is mobilized as a means for establishing temporal sovereignty in relation to anachronistic pasts. In doing so, we aim to provoke new questions about the histories, politics, and futures of Indigenous self-representation.

The present book Tribals in the Contemporary Context: Myriad Perspectives from North- East India is the fruit of the select deliberations at the National Seminar on the same theme organized by the Department of Anthropology under the School of Human and Environmental Sciences of Saint Claret College, Ziro, Arunachal Pradesh, in April 2016. There were 39 papers presented at the Seminar. Of them, 18 have been selected for publication in this book, applying various parameters. These papers will provide an interested reader with food for thought as to the tribal life and culture as they undergo metamorphosis under the impact of modernization.  The papers cover a wide gamut of tribal life and experience ranging from religious beliefs, cultural praxis, politics and governance, economy, status of women, healthcare and many more. One can gain insights on how the tribes have arrived at the present context and what impact the current forces will have on their future. I hope this book will also inspire young as well as seasoned researchers to further explore the changing ambience of tribal life for the benefit of all.

В статье рассматривается история изучения скифских памятников Cтепного Поднестровья на дореволюционном, советском и постсоветском этапах. В настоящее время источниковая база включает 518 памятников, обнаруженных и исследованных в cтепном Поднестровье: 507 погребений, один культовый комплекс, три клада и семь отдельных находок.

This volume has been prepared quickly, smoothly and cheerfully. This is, perhaps, because it is dedicated to the 70th birthday anniversary of a person who is always cheerful himself, an archaeologist, zealous and lucky researcher, a radiant personality and a very kind man, as well as a wonderful colleague and true friend of all good people – Nicolai Telnov.
His journey in science has been long and fruitful: from Belgorod to Bucovina, from the Crimea to the Carpathians; expeditions and field surveys, libraries and museums; with shovel and satchel; with fantastic patience and sensational results, with vast experience and rich knowledge ready to share with his colleagues and disciples. Telnov’s realm is Tripolye and Scythians, Dacians and Slavs, medieval nomads and the old letters of the sad Lay of Igor’s Warfare. His inquisitive mind knows no limits, and we will be more than glad if this volume can serve him and other readers as a trigger to follow the thorny path of science in search of new insights.
