moreCulture is well acclaimed as the fourth pillar of sustainable development along with the environmental, social and economic aspects. Cultural hybridization and degradization is visible along with urbanization and development and we are trailing towards cultural vacuum. This situation is resulting in the loss of significant indigenous traditions along with values and morals. This is greatly affecting the life pattern, behavior pattern and thinking of people. Social bonding is loosing and resulting in to various social problems along with loss of cultural identity, traditions and dialects / languages. To rescue this situation, indigenous culture must be viewed as an integral part of development policy making and implementation. Indigenous knowledge system is developed as per the ecological setup of the region and its understanding and continuation is important in development of policy making and indigenous regional sustenance. Cultural aspects must be considered specially while making educational, economic, health, environmental and tourism policies for a particular region or target group. People are forgetting their traditions, history, identity and values. Hence, there is a need for generating awareness and sense of pride for indigenous culture to protect and preserve the indigenous culture, traditions, identity and heritage. Younger generation loosing interest in the traditional methods must also be made aware to protect effective traditional cultural practices and valuable herbal plants before they get lost due to impact of modernization, urbanization and deforestation. This will help in strengthening social bonding, unity, values, socio-economic independence, sustenance at community level and protecting cultural heritage. This will also improve community involvement and community based cultural sustainable development. Implementation of correct, collaborative and effective mix of traditional and modern practices will prove more fruitful in this perspective. Preservation and promotion of tangible and intangible cultural heritage is essential for preservation of culture and cultural sustenance. Role of public cultural institutions will be significant in achieving this goal of cultural sustainability. This paper deals with regional issues, challenges and prospects related with the cultural sustainability explained through local examples.
