Conference Management

Conference planning, organization and administration are very tedious tasks. In most cases the conference programme committee has to convene several meetings where submitted papers (via emails in most cases) are downloaded, discussed and accepted or rejected for presentation at the conference. This paper presents the design of a web-based conference paper management system which facilitates easy and efficient review of technical submissions to conferences. Our proposed system stores authors' information, abstracts, papers and reviewers' comments. The process of assignment of papers to reviewers is done using a set of objective parameters to determine the most suitable reviewers for each article. The system also collates camera ready accepted papers to generate conference proceeding for the conference. This work will reduce the amount of paperwork and the need for several meetings by the programme committee thus making conference organization a pleasure. Also the effectiveness of conference organization and management will be substantially improved.

The aim of this paper is to discuss how the working environment has changed due to coronavirus pandemic. While it is true that along the human history working environments have been changed to automation and digitalization. It is safe to assume at this point in time that digital transformation was accelerated and businesses are being forced to adopt technologies and measures in order to protect their employees. This paper will show the challenges and impact faced by both employees and businesses and what measures can be taken in order to mitigate the risks. Coronavirus will have an impact on the working environment even after is over because digital businesses will adopt a hybrid work style while businesses in manufacturing will continue their automation.

The paper proposes a method for investigating the dynamics of foreign exchange markets using power spectral analysis combined with filter design. This has allowed a more precise description and understanding of the way in which the market character has changed following certain key political, econumie and technological events such as the growth ofelectronic trading. Results following investigation of the last ten years' worth of hourly trading for the EuraISUS are presented. Some interesting outcomes and implications of the technique for supporting trading decision-making are discussed.

Twitter backchannels are increasingly popular at medical conferences. A variety of user groups, including healthcare providers and third party entities (e.g., pharmaceutical or medical device companies) use these backchannels to communicate with one another. These backchannels are unregulated and can allow third party commercial entities to exert an equal or greater amount of influence than healthcare providers. Third parties can use this influence to promote their products or services instead of sharing unbiased, evidence-based information. In the #MICEproject we quantified the influence that third party commercial entities had in 13 major medical conferences.

Digitalization has become a main source of potential for applications, facilitating more efficient and more cost effective work practices worldwide. While this trend of digitalization has impacted most areas of activity globally, the dynamics of companies, processes and organizational structures in terms of change management challenges have also evolved generally towards less decentralized operating systems, less hierarchical levels, more automated processes and more cooperation between organizational members. However, it has also brought numerous challenges within the business field especially, where smart applications and cloud IT systems involve more stakeholders of the process, who need to interact on a daily basis in terms of process achievement. The present paper presents some of the main advantages, but also some of the main issues in terms of organizational change management on the procurement level at Genpact Romania for the years 2015-2019. The research focuses on the company's new Procure-to-Pay software system, Coupa Ebuy, that brought tremendous advantages in terms of time and costs decreasing for purchase order management, as well as an efficient system of order management issuance and checking, but also challenges within the organization and a new approach to suppliers, buyers and other involves parties in the process for the mentioned period. The paper presents a practical overview of the implementation of the new technological tool for supporting the procurement process within the company, that impacted the organizational change management and the process changes as an adapting strategy to the automation trend within the firm.

There is a need to develop a risk management model for generic Operational Support Systems (OSS), preferably implemented on top of the eTOM framework. On closer inspection of the the eTOM framework it was discovered that risk management was virtually non-existent. After considering existing risk management solutions such as the COSO Risk Management framework and various others, a need was identified for a new risk management paradigm. This paper presents the solution offered by the authors to serve the needs of not just the telecommunications industry, but any industry in need of a simple, logically structured risk management methodology.

Assimilable organic carbon (AOC) is an important parameter governing the growth of heterotrophic bacteria in drinking water. Despite the recognition that variations in treatment practices (e.g., disinfection, coagulation, selection of filter media, and watershed protection) can have dramatic impacts on AOC levels in drinking water, few water utilities routinely measure AOC levels because of the difficulty of the method. To simplify the method, the Pseudomonas fluorescens P-17 and Spirillum sp. strain NOX test bacteria were mutagenized by using luxCDABE operon fusion and inducible transposons to produce bioluminescent strains. The growth of these strains can easily be monitored with a programmable luminometer to determine the maximum cell yield via luminescence readings, and these values can be fitted to the classical Monod growth curve to determine bacterial growth kinetics and the maximum growth rate. The aim of the article is to analyse the dual role of Estonian local governments and their associationsas providers of educational services and as customers of educational services. This is primarily a qualitative case study, which employs comparative and historical methods. Legislation, case law and relevant scientific literature, as well as practical experiences, are incorporated in this analysis. The key issues considered are the inadequacy of the legal framework, as well as insufficiency of coordination and financing. The article consists of three parts. Firstly, managing general education as the most important task of Estonian local government will be analysed from a legal perspective. Secondly, the role and functions of local governments and their associations in providing various educational services will be analysed. The role of the state and local governments in establishing and maintaining basic schools and upper secondary schools are of key interest. In particular, their financing model. Thirdly, in-service training of local governments in Estonia and its situational aspects are analysed. Finally, the authors make suggestions on how to resolve the identified problems in the complex sphere of local governments and their associations as providers and customers of educational services.

The University of Pécs Faculty of Business and Economics, Department of Leadership and Organizational Sciences organized the biannual Ferenc Farkas International Scientific Conference for the third time in 2022 in Pécs, Hungary. The management-themed hybridform event had 129 international participants. The conference was organized using the PDCA approach. The event was professionally planned, hold and the results were checked to use the experiences in future conferences. In the checking phase, a post-conference customer satisfaction survey was used to evaluate the activities of the event. The 42% response rate allows the evaluation of the event. This article shows the concept of the conference, brief description of the organizing and management tasks, and the results of the customer feedback survey. The survey is evaluated and the results are discussed. In conclusion, it can be said that there is a high need for networking time and networking events next to scientific presentations. Participants preferred the conference proceedings as publication outcome to journal possibilities offered to them. As the conference was held just after the end of the Covid-19 restrictions, participants preferred physical presence over online participation. The goal of this article is to share the knowledge gained through organizing the conference with ideas and knowledge that can be used at future conferences.

Environmental pollution is a great hazard to our eco-system which is also being adversely affected by emissions from internal combustion (I.C.) engines. In the present work, an attempt has been made towards the application of Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN) for predicting the CO emission from a diesel engine so that better control of the engine parameters may be performed to minimize the level of emission. The data collected for training the Neural Network (NN) were compression ratio, injection timing, load, cylinder peak pressure, crank angle at peak pressure, temperature of cooling water, and temperature of exhaust gas. It has been observed that by the selective combination of input parameters to the NN may effectively predict the level of CO emission with minimum RMS error for effective control of emission.

Archaeology at Alken Enge The first excavation took place at Alken Enge in 1957, but the first artefacts were actually discovered in 1896, when pottery vessels were found in three areas of the bog. Further pottery was recovered during the first half of the 20th century in connection with peat-cutting in the bog. But it was not until several human bones were found during the digging of a drainage canal in 1956 that actual excavations were mounted. Archaeological excavations took place in 1957-60, under the direction of Harald Andersen. Large amounts of human bones were recovered, but interpretation of the finds and the stratigraphy proved difficult, and the locality slipped once more into oblivion. In 2005, however, the site was revived by Museum Skanderborg. The bones were analysed and the old plans digitalised, leading to an excavation undertaken by Museum Skanderborg, Moesgaard Museum and Aarhus University in 2012. The aim was not only to excavate further material and establish the extent of the locality, but also to investigate the state of preservation of the finds and the site's geology.

Welfare sectors across the world are facing the need to balance the contrast between economic pressures due to demographic changes and peoples' rising expectations of receiving services that are transparent; timely and tailored to citizens' habits and needs. This means that governments are pressured to look for new ways to deliver public services. This article looks at two cocreated peer-to-peer platforms that are engaged in delivering public services in the welfare sector, Helpific and Caremate, and their development and role in the Estonian welfare sector. These platforms appear to hold substantial potential for changing the current system of delivering public services, however they have not yet managed to acquire the anticipated level of success. By examining these two cases, it is proposed that the room and support for developing new solutions, using experience in the field and overcoming the digital divide must be assured in order to make changes in government welfare possible.

This article describes a series of experimental trials regarding the role of feelings in a museum context. These trials were carried out at Moesgård Museum in Denmark, and consisted of a series of additions to the museum’s permanent exhibitions. The trial set-ups were designed to provide visitors with the best possible opportunities for emotionally relating to the exhibits in question. Observations as well as qualitative interviews were used to study which effects the trial set-ups had, seen in relation to the permanent exhibition, and whether it was possible to trace any effect regarding how the visitors experienced the rest of the exhibition. The trials demonstrated that even very small efforts focused on creating an emotional response among visitors had the potential to create a greatly increased sense of relevance, empathy and interest in relation to the exhibits. This study investigates how imperfect inventory information provided by Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology can be used in inventory management. A simulation-based approach is utilized to understand the potential uses and impacts of imperfect RFID data in multi-echelon retail supply chains. Research efforts in this study are focused on observing how a retail supply chain is affected by allowing RFID inventory systems with imperfect visibility make all replenishment decisions. Furthermore, the use of RFID as a supporting technology to an existing inventory replenishment system is also examined. Simulation results reveal that when used as the primary decision making tool, RFID could be a valuable technology even without perfect visibility. However, unforeseen trends and system behaviours are observed on the level of inventory record inaccuracy. When RFID is used to monitor the inventory as a supporting technology, the information provided can be used to trigger inventory correction activities.

The purpose of this paper was to research the role of communication in destination marketing by analyzing the destination marketing campaign of Tallinn European Capital of Culture 2011. The research had a practical focus on determining the goals, if and how were they reached. In addition, attention was paid towards the obstacles of implementing the strategies. The research was conducted by qualitative in-depth interviews with 5 Tallinn 2011 specialists in order to map their opinions, feelings and experiences about communication as a part of destination marketing. The results showed that the destination marketing of Tallinn 2011 would have been unsuccessful without communication. Despite of unforeseen events and political communication, the team of Tallinn 2011 was able to play a decisive role in the destination marketing campaign of TECoC, promoting the city successfully with the most cost-effective ways possible. In its endeavour to prove the willingness of being a European worthy Culture Capital, it can be said that the common practice of communication and destination marketing was contradicted in the sense that unrealistic promises were communicated to target audiences but as the interviews showed, it was the ramification of series of unforeseen events and cannot in any way be blamed on the team of Tallinn 2011.

Little more than a decade ago, scholarly forays into social, mobile, and participatory media were met with cynicism by the academic community in the discipline of communication. On a paper submitted to a top-tier national communication journal, one anonymous reviewer commented that "While this study is methodologically sound, I would hate to see a journal of this quality publish anything that implied Twitter could benefit the classroom or society in general." To be fair, the study in question was a quantitative, descriptive research study that demonstrated correlation, not causation. Nevertheless, the centrality of social media to the study was too strong for the reviewer to ignore. The article ) later found a home in an interdisciplinary journal and remains one among a cadre of early published works on the impacts of social media in the classroom. That review was career changing for me. First, it crystallized my interest in investing in the study of that fascinating intersection between human communication and emerging digital technologies. And second, it gave me pause about the relative availability of publication outlets for this genre research within the discipline of communication. Since that time, I've often wondered whether we as communication scholars are frightened that digital technologies might prove our expertise wrong. One day, perhaps, a new media tool might be invented that would overturn a theory that we hold dear. Or, maybe, the growing fear of the academic enterprise will become realized when idle banter of social media takes the place of deep thinking. What I discovered was that I need not spend my efforts concerned about finding a specific place that didn't yet exist in academic discourse. Rather, I needed to be contributing to that very discourse in a community of communication scholars. Over the last decade or so, my colleagues and peers in human communication and technology lamented the need to move outside of the communication discipline (or at least toward its periphery) to publish research on social, mobile, and participatory media. We discussed which communication journals were open to articles that feature digital technology or social media or mobile devices, which book publishers offered contracts in these areas, and how to navigate the circuitous path of publication in interdisciplinary arenas. In recent years, researchers, social commentators and the mass media have turned their attention to shifts in the use of social media for political and social action. This article provides an overview of the recent discussions focusing on how Twitter specifically functions as a mediating tool for social acts. We present findings from a recent pilot project exploring the mechanics of disseminating information via Twitter across a dynamic human network in order to contribute to an understanding of how people use social media to share information and prompt others into action, and outline some approaches for performing this analysis. Taking the perspective of communities of users operating in hybrid spaces, we make recommendations for further research in this field. On closer inspection of the the eTOM framework it was discovered that risk management was virtually non-existent. After considering existing risk management solutions such as the COSO Risk Management framework and various others, a need was identified for a new risk management paradigm. This paper presents the solution offered by the authors to serve the needs of not just the telecommunications industry, but any industry in need of a simple, logically structured risk management methodology.

Purpose: The purpose of this analysis is to study the Collaborative Logistics process, its implementation within the Consumer Electronics and Household Appliances Supply Chain and to assess the benefits stemming from it. Methodology: To achieve the objectives the Activity-Based-Cost logic has been used. Each single defined activity has been associated to its most appropriate cost drivers. Moreover, an analytic simulation model has been built and implemented through a simplified representation of the Supply Chain composed of three actors: a retailer, a logistics operator and a manufacturer. Findings: The benefits stemming from the Collaborative Logistics project are equal to 35.51%. The majority of Supply Chain benefits comes from the reduction in Stock- Out costs and Inventory Management costs. Originality: The analytical model has been developed to foster the diffusion of this process by showing the potential benefits achievable through its implementation.

Simulation is the imitation of a real-world operation or process over time. Warehouse inventory management played an important role in improving customer service and reducing stock outs. Managing warehouse inventory is a challenging task and to address this challenge, we use simulation application in warehouse inventory management. The purpose of this paper is to use simulation in managing inventory of A Building Materials Trading Company in United Arab Emir-ates (UAE). Firstly, we will develop a model to improve average inventory level, average lost sales, and percentage of customer's dissatisfaction for the main component in the company which is cement. Secondly, we verify and validate our developed model using Arena simulation software. Finally, some recommendations regarding reorder point, batch size and target stock will be given to improve overall warehouse inventory management system.

Researchers have for a long time attempted to understand the concept of strategy. One way to examine strategy is to approach it through managers. According to the theory of cognitive style, there are differences in the ways people perceive things and make judgements. Based on these consistent differences, it can be proposed that there is consistent variation in the ways managers see strategy. Strong evidence of the relationship between cognitive style and strategy can be found in past research. Makes propositions concerning that relationship and suggests some guidelines for empirical research.

Assimilable organic carbon (AOC) is an important parameter governing the growth of heterotrophic bacteria in drinking water. Despite the recognition that variations in treatment practices (e.g., disinfection, coagulation, selection of filter media, and watershed protection) can have dramatic impacts on AOC levels in drinking water, few water utilities routinely measure AOC levels because of the difficulty of the method. To simplify the method, the Pseudomonas fluorescens P-17 and Spirillum sp. strain NOX test bacteria were mutagenized by using luxCDABE operon fusion and inducible transposons to produce bioluminescent strains. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) uses radio waves to track the movement of goods through the Supply Chain system. The identity of an object is captured with a unique serial number that is transmitted wirelessly to a computer system. Small businesses are facing RFID implementation barriers.  The barriers range from the perspective of the consumer-goods manufacturers and retail organizations.  We propose implementing RFID technology using cloud computing framework to alleviate or reduce the implementation cost which is the most prevalent barrier.
