moreExceeding speed is considered one of the main causes of death on the road. Although the evolution of national statistics on accidents over the last decade, is extremely positive, this matter continues to justify the development of strategies and measures that contribute to the reduction of road accidents and to place Portugal among the safest countries in Europe. The traffic calming bets in the compatibility of the traffic circulation between the different types of transportation that coexist in the same carriageway "channel", by applying a set of techniques that promote the reduction of motorized vehicles speeds approaching those of practiced by non-motorized vehicles and other road users, particularly pedestrians. The present work "traffic calming-case study in the city of Porto" was elaborated with the support of the bibliographic research best practices and references of this matter, this work aims to provide a manual in order to make it easier in the future the study of traffic calming, will also be presented a case study of a street in the city of Porto with two scenarios where applies various traffic calming measures. The case study developed is located in a noble area of the city of Porto, on Street. Dom Francisco de Almeida between the street of Fez and the Avenue Marechal Gomes da Costa. To determine existing conditions, we conducted a survey on the following factors: traffic, speeds practiced, geometric features of the stroke, soil occupation, and historic road accidents. On the basis of the elements collected in street survey, proposed changing the geometric characteristics of the same. Among the existing traffic calming measures and suitable for 30 km/h zones and residential areas, were prepared two scenarios that resolve the problems identified without mischaracterize the street and without performing background interventions that would be timeconsuming and costly. In General, it is proposed to raised check rails of intersections, placement of trees in the last section, the creation of a bicycle path and the organization of the street to allow the parking lot, this for scenario one. In the second scenario proposed, the introduction of a scavenger hunt of the last section, the remaining steps are the same as scenario one. Analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of each solution, it was suggested the one that better fits. The proposal goes in the direction of the implementation is done in stages: the first one, raised check rails of junctions and crossings and organization of parking lots, then the placement of trees in the last section and if you want to promote the use of alternative transport, the bike lanes.
