Ilısu Barajı dolum alanında kalacak arkeolojik verilerin incelenmesi, bugüne dek yalnızca sınırlı arkeolojik bilgi sunan bu bölgenin kültür tarihine değerli katkılar sağlamıştır. Bölgede Mezopotamya kültürleri egemendir. Ilısu Barajı inşaat alanında kalan 15 arkeolojik alanın tümü küçük boyutlu, tek katmanlı alanlardır. Küçük tarımcı veya mevsimlik yerleşimlerden oluşan 11 alanda kurtarma kazıları yapılmıştır. Boncuklu Tarla, basit mimarisi ve mezarları olan Çanak Çömleksiz Neolitik B yerleşimidir ve Havuz Mevkii, Ubeyd Dönemine tarihlenen küçük kırsal bir yerleşimdir. Tunç Çağları, Tatıka'da bulunan MÖ 3. binin ilk yarısına ait mezarlar ve bunlarla ilişkili ritüel yapılara sahip bir mezarlık alanı, Zuraki Zeri de MÖ 2. binin ilk yarısına tarihlenen küçük bir kırsal yerleşimle temsil edilmektedir. Zeviya Tivilki ve Kilokki Rabiseki Yeni Assur Dönemi'nde kullanılan yaylaları temsil etmektedir. Bölgede üç yerleşim Roma İmparatorluğu döneminde kullanılmıştır; Ilısu Höyük'te bir askeri kale, Kilokki Rabiseki'de bir oda mezar ve Zeviya Kavla'da bir kırsal yerleşim alanı. Ilısu Köyü'nde ergitme fırınlarıyla ilişkili kırsal yerleşim alanı 13. ve 14. yüzyıllara tarihlenmektedir.

Catholic churches are also facing closures, due in part to the lasting impact of clergy abuse scandals. Andrew Chesnut, chair in Catholic Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University, noted that “Baltimore's Catholic Archdiocese, the nation's oldest, is slashing its churches by about two-thirds, citing shrinking attendance and aging buildings.”

“I think the only ones who have shown some dynamism lately on the American Christian landscape are these non-denominational, usually charismatic megachurches,” Chesnut added.

veleposjeda zadarskog plemića Kože II. Bartulova Saladina.
Sudbina posjeda prati se od vremena Kože I. Saladina
(† 1296.), jednog od najvažnih i najistaknutijih zadarskih
plemića iz druge polovine 13. stoljeća, pa preko njegovih
nasljednika Bartula Saladina († 1331.) te Kože II. Bartulova
Saladina († 1366.?). Srednjovjekovno je Kožino formirano
u dijelu Petrčana, naselja koje je pod tim imenom
tada obuhvaćalo široki prostor od granice Zadra u Diklu
pa do Zatona ninskog. Na tome se prostoru u srednjem
vijeku spominju crkve sv. Vigilija (danas nepoznate lokacije),
zatim sv. Bartola (danas ruševina koju najvjerojatnije
podiže Bartul Saladin) te ona sv. Petra, sagrađena tijekom
13. stoljeća. Ta će u 14. stoljeću preuzeti ulogu župne crkve
novog sela nazvanog Kožino. Saladinov je veleposjed
u drugoj polovini 14. stoljeća dospio u vlasništvo Pelegrine,
kćeri Kože II. i udovice Frane Grisogona, nakadašnjega
zadarskog kneza u Pagu. Ona ga je, pak, oporučno
1392. godine ostavila koludricama u samostanu zadarskih
pučanki uz crkvu sv. Katarine. Iako spomenuti veleposjed
zadarskih Saladina u srednjovjekovnim Petrčanima nije
preživio u njihovu vlasništvu nakon 14. stoljeća, ipak je
ostavio duboka traga na samom terenu jer je prema istaknutom
posjedniku Koži II. Saladinu zadobio posebno
ime, Kožino selo.

Saint Patrick and the Christianization of Ireland

St. Patrick was born around 379, in the vicus Bannavem Taberniae, at the confluence of the rivers Severn and Avon, in the Roman province of Britannia Prima. In 395, at the age of 16, he was captured during an Irish raid and taken prisoner to Ireland, where he remained for six years. After a dreamlike vision he left the area in which he was living and, after traveling for approximately 300 km, arrived in the area of the present-day Wexford. There he boarded a merchant ship and after an eventful voyage landed on the coast of Armorica. In the following years he wandered around Britain and continental Europe ending up at Autessiodurum. There he was educated at the School of St. Germanus, joined the clergy and, after his ordination as a bishop, was sent to Ireland to Christianize it.
In 432 St. Patrick landed in the island at the head of a large group of clergy, monks and craftsmen. He then bought his freedom (since to Irish society he was still a slave), and held audience with High King Loegaire, from whom he secured safety and freedom of movement. Patrick's missionary effort covered the central and northern part of the island, focusing on the kings and their sons. At the same time, he founded monasteries, the importance of which was significant, as they drew large numbers of people around them, forming the first cities of Ireland. This occurred because monasteries were economic and educational centers. The most important of all them all was that of Armagh. St. Patrick died on 17 March 461 and was buried at Dum Lethglaisse.
In the centuries that followed the abbots of Armagh claimed for their diocese primacy over the Irish Church. This claim was connected with the person of St. Patrick and expressed through the developing of some newer Lives of the saint, eventually resulting to the creation of a legend, which when fully developed, had little to do with the real St. Patrick.

An important part of daily life in the Byzantine world, oil lamps are also objects of significant
symbolic value with the various meanings they have acquired within religious iconography.
These small portable objects, which contain information about the technology, fashion and belief
systems of the period in which they were produced, have been the most important means of
enlightenment in human life for centuries. The association of light with goodness and darkness
with unknown evils, which is seen in many belief systems and which we encounter in Christian
belief, has made the lamps that preserve and carry the light important in this context. In the
Byzantine world, it is known that oil lamps, which we encounter with the symbolism of light,
which is interpreted as Jesus, were used for purposes such as votive offerings, talismans, magic,
offerings, etc. in addition to being a lighting device. In this study, 13 oil lamps from the Late
Roman / Early Byzantine period, which we know to have been used for many purposes, were
examined in the collection of the Sinop Museum. The aim of the study is to introduce this group
of lamps in the Sinop Museum collection to the scientific world

This article offers an Anabaptist-informed critique of the tendency in contemporary politics to conscript Christian identity into the service of nationalistic agendas. By drawing upon the historical witness of the Anabaptists, I argue that the idea of a 'Christian Nation', despite its seductive appeal, is not a sacred archetype, but a profane illusion and a self-contradiction. Instead, I will argue that Baptists today are called to a transformative engagement with the world that is grounded in radical discipleship and inspired by shared Baptist-Anabaptist convictions, such as freedom, dignity, and the importance of living out our faith as Baptists in a way that transcends political and national boundaries.

This work presents an English translation of Theophanes of Nicaea's Letter to Paul, answering questions about the Essence-Energy-Distinction (EED) raised by Paul (the Latin Patriarch of Constantinople) in 8 chapters. The translation was initially generated with the assistance of AI and subsequently edited by the translator to ensure accuracy to the original text.

Buvina's door are a unique testimony of Croatian art of the developed Middle Age and are one of five works from existing 26 from that time in Dalmatia (including panel paintings) that have been comprehensively researched in terms of history, technique, and conservation-restoration. The research project on the door took place simultaneously with the conservation-restoration work within the program of the Croatian Conservation Institute. To varying extents, it covered the corpus of all nine preserved works in Split, with links to panel paintings in Zadar, Šibenik, Trogir, Hvar and Dubrovnik. It started in 2014, when the document marked the 800th anniversary of the creation of the doors (1214) and ended in 2018 with a conclusion in the form of a multidisciplinary conference and exhibition. It continues, encompassing the last phase of technical research on the choir stalls of the Split Cathedral dated around 1260, which are from 2021 also the program of the Croatian Conservation Institute and, in parallel, the remaining works of panel paintings in Dalmatia, on which the author collaborates with a whole range of experts of various profiles. The results are successively presented to the professional public with the aim of creating a comprehensive study of the works of the Romanesque style in Split and its contextualization within the framework of European art.

Aim. The article discusses the status of the Greek Catholic Church from 1948 to 1950. It also presents how this period was presented through media. Since it is possible to investigate this aspect within the framework of a comparison of several media channels, we have decided to introduce the comparison through the perspective of the daily-newspaper Rudé právo. Methods. The findings of our research study are based on the data collected from archival and documentary sources, as well as professional studies and monographs related to the above-mentioned topic. Results. Based on our research topic, we can understand how the attitude towards the Greek Catholic Church changed after the events of February 1948 and Local Cultures and Societies what impact the change of regime had on its functioning. Regarding media, we can observe how the pressure on the Greek Catholic Church changed in relation to the regime change and individual historical events, and how the media expressed its opinion on the Church. Media is not only a source of information for people, but it also creates public opinion, and therefore, it was extremely important to control this state apparatus in the past. We must understand that availability of information in the 1950s and today is significantly different. Catholic periodicals were almost non-existent and thus, people often received misleading or false information. Through our research, which is presented in the tabular presentation of data, we can discover the increasing pressure against the Church, and the response of the public to the Church.

In the proposed article, an attempt is made to critically study the history of the Mukachevo Greek Catholic Eparchy (MGCE) on the basis of the press. First of all, attention is focused on the regional press. In general, both church and secular publications were used. The period was not chosen by chance, because it is the period of the interwar and wartime periods of the Czechoslovak Republic. The main task of the research is to study not only the subject matter of the publications, but also the views that were covered in each periodical. The fact is that depending on the edition and the publisher, the content of the publications was appropriate. If religious topics and protection of the Church prevailed in church periodicals, then in government or independent periodicals, in addition to general news, there were also critical articles about the Church. Particular attention is paid to historical topics in these periodicals on the history of the Mukachevo Eparchy. In general, information in journals and the press can significantly supplement historical knowledge not only of the history of the Church, but also of the history of state-church relations and the history of Czechoslovakia of the studied period.

Essa, “canonizzata” da Opitz nella sua edizione dell’opera atanasiana, passò per essere autentica e per di più, composta da Atanasio stesso. I vari documenti hanno persino ricevuto nell’edizione critica di Athanasius Werke i numeri continui di De decr., da 33 a 42, creando non poca confusione. Questi documenti, pieni di anacronismi, sembrano essere stati composti solo dopo la morte di Atanasio, il quale non ne fece la pur minima allusione. La situazione ad Alessandria era divenuta allora molto difficile per i niceni, perché la Chiesa era passata nelle mani degli omei, e si erano verificati vari disordini e atti di violenza in città. The article reconstructs some of the scientific methods used by early modern geographers in composing so-called «Theatres of the World», that is descriptions of the different regions and countries of the world supplemented with maps. How these texts were composed? What sources were considered as texts of authority? Could the historical context influence the content, choice of choice of words and names, characteristics of peoples and kings? The author seeks answers to these questions in the chapter «Holy Land of the Atlas, or Cosmographic Meditations upon the Structure of the Universe and the Form of the Created by G. Mercator J. Hondius. This paper is the first pubblication of the translation into Russian the chapter "Holy Land". | В статье реконструируются некоторые научные методы, применявшиеся учёными-географами раннего Нового времени при составлении т. н. «Обозрений земного круга» — карт различных частей света, дополненных рассказами о многообразных регионах и странах всего мира. Как составлялись тексты для таких атласов? Какие источники считались авторитетными? Мог ли исторический контекст создания произведений такого жанра повлиять на содержание, выбор лексики, характеристики народов и царей? Ответы на эти вопросы автор ищет в главе «Святая земля» из Атласа, или Космографических размышлений об устройстве мира в форме сотворённого Г. Меркатора Й. Хондия. В статье публикуется впервые выполненный современный русский перевод этой главы.

W jaki sposób chłopi pojmowali i doświadczali zróżnicowania wyznanowego w Rzeczypospolitej, na które odpowiedzią w stanie szlacheckim miała być tolerancja? Interesować nas będzie przypadek kulturowych czy wyznaniowych odmienności wewnątrz chłopskiej grupy społecznej, w sąsiedztwie czy wręcz w tej samej wsi. Było to bowiem zjawisko wyraźnie inne od nakładania się różnic stanowych i odrębności etniczno-wyznaniowych, co stanowiło dość charakterystyczny rys organizacji społeczeństwa nowożytnej Rzeczypospolitej. W dotychczasowej literaturze przedmiotu problem relacji wyznaniowych w obrębie społeczności chłopskich omawiano na ogół na przykładzie stosunków religijnych na pograniczu etnicznym polsko-ruskim i w kontekście współistnienia obrządku łacińskiego i greckiego w obrębie Kościoła katolickiego na tych terenach. W poniższym studium przyglądam się zatem innemu pograniczu etnicznemu – polsko-niemieckiemu, gdzie obok siebie egzystowały (a czasem przenikały się) chłopskie społeczności katolickie i protestanckie – w tym wypadku luterańskie.

Tématem příspěvku je nová analýza dostupných poznatků o hrobech K1 a K2 v lodi předrománské rotundy sv. Víta, které byly objeveny již v roce 1911 a připisovány několika přemyslovským knížatům. Provedena byla zejména revize antropologických poznatků, analýzy stabilních izotopů uhlíku (δ13C) a dusíku (δ15N), analýza DNA a radiouhlíkové datování. Získaná data nedávají dohromady konzistentní obraz. Archeologie vylučuje připsání ostatků knížeti Bořivoji I. († asi 888/889), antropologie pak knížeti Boleslavu I. († 972). Oba obory by dovolovaly připsat s určitou pravděpodobností kosterní ostatky knížeti Boleslavu II. († 999), tomu ale neodpovídá radiokarbonové datování. Navržena je možnost připsat ostatky písemně doloženému jménem neznámému synovi knížete Boleslava I., který zemřel před rokem 972. Analýza DNA z K2 připsala ostatky ženě, pravděpodobně tedy manželce osoby K1.

Finds of 14th-century Venetian trade tokens in southwestern Crimea indirectly confirm the claim about the widespread use on the peninsula not only of the traditional and common small copper coins of the Golden Horde, but also of a wide range of foreign coins from the previous several centuries. Apparently, this list also included coin-like tokens (tesserae). These facts fit the hypothesis about the circulation of small copper coins in the local market as units of account (sticks), enabling minor transactions for purchases. The two tokens found in Crimea depict a very common and popular theme from ancient history: the runaway slave Androclus, who pulled a thorn from the paw of an injured lion. The predator rewarded the rescuer in a lethal performance in the Roman circus. Traditionally, based on the depiction of a winged lion, tokens of this type are attributed to Venetian minting; however, there is also a well-argued version attributing them to Florence.

The two incomplete probable harness fittings described here, found in Norfolk by metal-detectorists, are of comparable size and form, but uncertain signification. Both are copper alloy, with engraved and gilded decoration. Although not mould identical, and of different construction, they are likely to have served the same original function as decorative horse furniture and display the same combination of proto-armorial Orientalising motifs- Two addorsed demi lions passant regardant springing from a central column (one with a surviving pinecone finial)- and must share a common exemplar.

Le scellement des actes se caractérise par une très large ouverture sociale en Normandie, la coutume favorisant l’usage des sceaux par les paysans et les jeunes héritières pas encore mariées. Ainsi le duché offre une situation originale en matière de sceaux féminins : les paysannes possédaient des sceaux au même titre que les aristocrates. Cependant la possession d’un tel objet, loin d’effacer les hiérarchies, soulignait au contraire les rapports de domination sociale, territoriale, économique et genrée.
Si les sceaux féminins sont plus fréquents en Normandie que dans d’autres espaces français, le scellement était avant tout la mise en scène d’une domination des pères, maris, fils, clercs et religieux qui actaient souvent en leur nom propre et en celui des femmes. D’où l’importance de l’analyse du phénomène sigillaire féminin : la possession d’un sceau par une femme nuance son statut de dominé. La légende des sceaux féminins définissait les sigillantes à l’aune de leur statut marital (épouse de, veuve de, patronyme adopté du mari). Mais nombre de femmes mariées scellaient sans leur époux ou portait un nom qui leur était propre. Par ailleurs, revendiquer sa parenté avec le lignage d’un mari permettait d’asseoir son rang dans la société aristocratique, urbaine ou villageoise. Quant aux abbesses, certaines n’hésitaient pas à se dire abbesse dei gratia, comme le faisaient les rois ou les évêques.
Bien sûr, la domination sociale des élites féminines transparaissait dans l’emploi prestigieux du portrait sigillaire. Mais la qualité et la dimension des matrices montraient également la domination économique des aristocrates et de certaines abbesses, parfois des bourgeoises. A l’inverse, les sceaux de certaines bourgeoises, voire de dames de la petite noblesse ne les distinguaient guère des sceaux de paysannes, la charte seule fournissant leur qualité. Ainsi la domination sociale ne transparaît pas toujours sur l’objet, ou du moins l’objet met en lumière la diversité des situations économiques au sein d’un même groupe social. Enfin, la domination passait aussi par la diffusion territoriale des empreintes : les dames de la noblesse expédiaient au loin des actes scellés, en lien avec un patrimoine éparpillé au gré des origines et alliances, signe de l’importance de leur réseau familial, alors que les actes des paysannes demeuraient en Normandie.

Nombre de ses toiles rendront compte de ce premier séjour algérien de Dubois. Tel est le cas de La Paix dans la lumière et du tableau intitulé Au Cimetière d'El Kettar. Surtout, le peintre aura alors l'occasion de découvrir le désert. En février 1921, suite à une invitation du Commandant Pariel 4 , il se rend à Figuig où il séjournera un mois. Les palmeraies, vision de charme au milieu du grandiose de ce pays, des pêchers roses fleuris dans les palmiers et au bout des bassins distributeurs d'eau 5 . Against the background of earlier historiography, the article provides an overview of the contributions to the history of the Society of Jesus in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth published between 2017 and 2024. The author particularly highlights new trends, i.e. the introduction of new sources into the scholarly discourse and the shift from historiography authored by Jesuits to a non-Jesuit one.

The Foundation Charter of Sztum Dated 23 September 1416 This article presents a scholarly edition of the foundation charter of Sztum (Ger. Stuhm), dated 23 September 1416, preserved in the State Archives in Gdańsk (Ger. Danzig). Despite its historical significance, this original source has not been utilised in previous historiography of Sztum or in broader studies on the history of Prussian towns during the Middle Ages and early modern period. Instead, researchers have relied exclusively on eighteenth-century copies. The first part of the article examines how the charter has been used in historiography since the second half of the nineteenth century, discusses the history of the Sztum archives from the eighteenth to the twentieth century, and reviews the surviving eighteenth-century copies of the charter housed in the State Archives in Gdańsk. The second part provides an analysis of the content of the original document and outlines the methodology used to produce a map of Sztum, including a hypothetical reconstruction of the town's landed estates (municipal patrimony). The third part offers a description of the document's physical characteristics and explains the editorial principles applied in the publication of the charter's text, which is included as a source edition in the appendix.

In De geest van de dichter (Multatuliprijs 1991) voert ze zogenaamde gesprekken met negentiende-eeuwse schrijvers. Zij is columniste van NRC Handelsblad. In 1998 ontving zij de Prins Bernhard Fondsprijs voor de Geesteswetenschappen. In 2001 verzorgde zij de uitgave in de Griffioenreeks van De gedichten van De Schoolmeester. in schoolmeesters en dominees de dienst uitmaakten. Het hele leven was bekrompen en benepen, leerde ik. De negentiende eeuw die ik kende, kreeg een masker opgezet, waardoor ik het vertrouwde niet meer herkende. Het levende gezicht werd onzichtbaar achter de onbeweeglijke en verstarde trekken van het masker. Mijn leraar Nederlands dweepte met de Tachtigers, die niet bij de negentiende eeuw gerekend werden. Ik leerde dat die pas echte literatuur geschreven hadden en dat pas daarna iets gebeurde in de Nederlandse letterkunde dat Europees niveau had. In de schoolbibliotheek vond ik werk van Jacob van Lennep, van De Schoolmeester, van Piet Paaltjens en van Nicolaas Beets. Ik vond dat niet zo heel saai als de leraar beweerde. En ook las ik Tolstoj, Alexandre Dumas, Emily , Bronte, Charles Dickens en Walter Scott. Ik vond dat heel mooi, minstens zo mooi als Jacob van Lennep. Toen ging ik studeren en weer leerde ik dat de negentiende eeuw een tijd van verval was, waarin geen letterkunde van enig niveau geschreven werd. Maar als ik de negentiende-eeuwers las, vond ik hun taalgebruik rijk en hun verhaallijnen krachtig. Ik werd eigenwijs en vond dat de Tachtigers overschat, en de vroege negentiende eeuw onderschat werd. Door een voorbestemd toeval vond ik de onuitgegeven brieven van Gerrit van de Linde, alias De Schoolmeester, in een Amsterdams ar- chief. Het was alsof ik van de achtbaan naar beneden duizelde. Die brieyen staan zo ver van elke sufheid en saaiheid af, ze zijn zo emotioneel, in zo'n ongewoon expressieve taal geschreven, zo kunstig zijn alle mogelijkheden van de taal uitgebuit, dat ik besefte dat ik die niet voor mezelf mocht houden. Ik was nog student toen ik besloot die brieven uit te geyen. Ik ging me verdiepen in de negentiende-eeuwse geschiedenis, in het alledaagse leven, de omgangsvormen, de mentaliteit kortom. Toen ontdekte ik de rijkdom van de veranderingen in de negentiende eeuw. De negentiende eeuw is een omslagpunt. Alles wat we zijn, waardoor we geen middeleeuwse primitieve maatschappij meer zijn met lijf-en doodstraffen, bloedwraak, openbaar geselen en kinderarbeid, en waardoor de slavernij afgeschaft is, is te danken aan negentiende-eeuwse be- wegingen. Doordat steeds meer mensen onderwijs kregen en de publieke debatten konden volgen, werden verlichte ideeen sneller en met meer invloed verspreid. De vrouwenbeweging, de antislavernijbeweging, de arbeidersbeweging waren internationaal georganiseerd. Voor het eerst werden wereldcongressen gehouden. De vooruitgang van de medische wetenschap heeft bijgedragen aan een mentale ommekeer. De koepokinenting, hoe fel daartegen ook geageerd werd, raakte in gebruik, waardoor de pokken uitgebannen werden. De cholera verdween uit de steden zodra er waterleiding aangelegd was. De kindersterfte nam in de loop van de eeuw gigantisch of door de verbetering van de hygiene. De uitvinding van het gipsverband maakte dat been-en armbreuken niet meer automatisch invaliditeit tot gevolg hadden. Alles wat vastgestaan had, leek te kunnen veranderen. Door de mechanisering en de stoomkracht konden er opeens dingen die nooit gekund hadden. Een schip kon varen ook als God geen wind in de zeilen blies, een machine kon meer kracht produceren dan honderd man bij elkaar. Afstanden werden bijna letterlijk verkleind door de stoomtrein. Alsof de tijd zelf snel geworden was, zo dichtte A. Beeloo het: De tijd gaat snel, de tijd der stoomkracht, die de vleugelen der winden aanschiet, neen, der stormen, niet te teugelen. Het is niet alleen het nageslacht dat die tijd een masker opgezet heeft. Om te kunnen leven tussen realiteiten en wensdromen moesten de tijdgenoten zelf met maskers lopen. Het was onmogelijk te voldoen aan alle voorschriften en idealen. Men kon een ideale huisvader willen zijn, maar de dienstmeisjes waren zo mooi. Men kon matigheid preken, maar na afloop van de vergadering van de matigheidsbeweging stond de cognac op de societeit in voile flessen te wachten. Als moeder de huisvrouw langdurig ziek in een kraambed lag, waren de hoeren aantrekkelijk. Je kon een cent geven aan een bedelaarskind, en een bedelaarsgesticht mee helpen oprichten, maar dat wilde nog niet zeggen dat je zo'n kind in huis zou nemen. De befaamde dubbele moraal van de negentiende eeuw komt voort uit het conflict tussen willen en kunnen. Ili raakte zowel geboeid door het masker dat de negentiende eeuw zichzelf opzette als door dat van het nageslacht. De verheviging van een bepaalde expressie of eigenschap is gewoonlijk het doel van een masker. Een masker concentreert de aandacht op een eigenschap. De burgerlijkheid van de negentiende eeuw is samengebald in dat masker dat haar opgedrukt is. En zeker, die eeuw was burgerlijk. Alleen vat ik burgerlijk op als een geuzennaam. De negentiende eeuw is een door en door burgerlijke eeuw, in die zin dat de burger zijn meest intensieve bewustwor-12 ding toen beleefde. Hij nam geen genoegen meer met de oude verdeling van macht en invloed. Hij wilde niet meer dat grote groepen armen, krankzinnigen, zieken, misdadigers buitengesloten werden en dus verkommerden. Hij nam krachtige initiatieven om een betere samenleving op paten te zetten. Om dit te bereiken moest hij wel een soort verheven masker opzetten. Kwam het door de Franse Revolutie dat iedereen opeens aan de slag leek te gaan om een maatschappij te creeren die beter in elkaar zat dan voorheen? In heel Europa wordt de wildheid beteugeld en wordt gebouwd aan idealen. Uitwassen zijn ongewenst. Er moet een verstandige, tedere maatschappij komen, die plaats biedt aan iedereen. Deze maatschappij moet gevormd worden zoals een gezin. Model voor de ideale samenleving is de piramidale drie-eenheid van vader, moeder, kind. Het kind is een samenvattend begrip voor nageslacht. De vader staat aan de top en is in alle opzichten het verstand, de rationaliteit, de planner. Hij staat in een liefdevolle verhouding met de moeder, die voor het evenwicht zorgt, scherpe kanten van de vader neutraliseert en de microkosmos van het gezin bestiert. Het kind is het product van de harmonie tussen de vader en de moeder. Vrouw en kind staan op dezelfde lijn, want voor beiden is de vader verantwoordelijk. De bekende dominee Otto Gerhard Heldring hield zijn kinderen in de gaten. 'De kinderkamer was mijn studeerkamer. Een afzonderlijk studeervertrek hield ik er niet op na, wel een boekenkamer, waar mijn lessenaar stond, maar ik kon het nooit over mij krijgen om daar, afgezonderd van de huisgenoten, te gaan zitten. Ik was te midden van mijn kinderen van hun eerste levensjaar af, omdat ik het als vaderplicht beschouwde in de huiskamer te zijn, waar zij speelden. Daar zag ik ze altijd onder mijn ogen, daar alleen was het mogelijk klein en groot gade te slaan en overeenkomstig hun karakter te leren behandelen. Ik had te dikwijls gezien, hoe het studeervertrek van de predikant hem al te zeer uit het midden van zijn familie trekt. Hij is dan, ofschoon vader, beter in zijn bibliotheek thuis dan in zijn kinderwereld. De kinderen hebben in huis aan hem niets, en is hij daarbuiten, dan leeft hij geheel voor de gemeente. Arme moeder!' De ideale vader uit de negentiende eeuw is aanwezig voor zijn kinderen, en betrokken bij hun ontwikkeling. Het gezinsmodel geldt ook voor de andere maatschappelijke instellingen. Om dit te begrijpen moet men wat goochelen met metaforen die in de negentiende eeuw gemakkelijk van vrouwelijk naar mannelijk en van figuurlijk naar letterlijk wisselen. Het vrouwelijk element is hier de natie, die zich heeft laten bevruchten door de koning om de onderdanen te verwekken. Onderdanen ontstaan immers alleen als zij zich deel van een natie voelen. De natie waarborgt dat tussen onderdanen en koning een evenwichtige relatie bestaat. Het beeld van de koning die als een vader voor zijn kinderen zorgt, is geliefd bij de dichters van de negentiende eeuw. '0 Koning! herder! vorst en vader, geliefd door uw vereend gezin!' zo zong Hendrik Tollens Willem i toe bij zijn kroning tot vorst in '8'5. De nieuwe massa-industrie van de eeuw gebruikt zelfs de gezinssymboliek. De werkgever is de verantwoordelijke vader die voor het heil van zijn werknemers moet zorgen. Het fabrieksproduct is hier de liefdesbaby van de rechtvaardige vader en zijn toegewijde arbeiders. Daartegenover staat de zwarte zijde van de negentiende eeuw, die verborgen moest blijven. Er heerst grote verwarring gedurende de hele eeuw. De mens is niet redelijk. Uitspattingen komen veelvuldig voor. De mens werkt aan zijn eigen ondergang door te streven naar een geoliede maatschappij. Verbeteringen brengen verslechteringen voort. Wie staatsregelingen voor prostitutie wil, erkent het kwaad van de prostitutie. Humanisering van de massale gevangenissen leidt tot trieste isolering. Meer loon betekent meer drank, meer macht leidt tot meer misbruik. Seksualiteit valt niet te beteugelen. Dit geldt ook voor de natuur, waar kindersterfte en epidemieen ondanks alle vooruitgang in de wetenschap mensenlevens opslurpen. Daar kwam bij dat de oude moraal niet meer voldeed. Welke veranderingen kwamen van de duivel, welke van God? Het Kwaad kwam in een identiteitscrisis. De oude moraal had geen antwoord op de dilemma's waar de nieuwe mens voor kwam te staan. Bovendien gebruikte het kwaad zelf een masker om zich in de maatschappij te nestelen, zoals Johannes Kneppelhout zo prachtig...

Објављивањем два натписа из манастира Грачанице сазнало се да је патријарх Пајсије (1614-1647) одлазио на ходочашће у Јерусалим 1645-1646. године, што је било укључено у све касније написане биографије овог патријарха. 1 На фресци у спољној припрати грачаничке цркве угребана су два натписа, један испод другог. Први од њих гласи: Вь лѣт(о) ҂ . ходи патрїархь на Ер(оу)с(а)лѵмъ кѵр(ь) Паѵсеи; ѡтиде м(есе)ца ѡк(товрїа) (?) ї доће їюн(їа) м(есе)ца + ., а други: Лѣт(а) ҂ . ходи патрїархь на Ер(оу)с(а)л(и)мъ; ѡтиде м(есе)ца ѡк(товрїа) . а доће м(е)с(е)ца їюнїа . д(ь)нь, многа мꙋ лѣта. 2 Натписи су исте садржине и разликују се једино у датумима; претпостављамо да други представља исправку првог натписа и да је исправнији, што значи да је патријарх кренуо на пут 24. октобра 1645. и да се из Јерусалима вратио 28. јуна 1646. This paper examines in detail the reception history of Tertullian’s treatise De anima in the later literature and thought of the early church, the two key theological concepts, introduced in De anima and which subsequently found wider resonance, being the corporeality of the human soul and its transmission ex traduce. Since Augustine included Tertullian in De haeresibus, Tertullian was considered, strictly speaking, a heretic (the first signs of the reserve towards the Carthaginian being detectable since the mid-fourth century), and his name was only seldom mentioned by later authors. However, both of his aforementioned concepts, elaborated in De anima as adaptations of originally Stoic heritage, found a wider, albeit not very sympathetic response, especially in Jerome, one of the few known admirers of Tertullian in late antiquity, and in Augustine himself. Although Jerome’s predilection for Tertullian only seldom implied a deeper interest in the content of his writings in general, he must have been familiar with De anima: from it he borrowed some isolated, pointed statements, plus the notion of the traducianist transmission of the human soul, which he touches upon several times in his own writings. One cannot ignore their Tertullian heritage. Augustine, on the other hand, had studied Tertullian’s treatise thoroughly, and while he was critical towards Tertullian in general and especially towards his corporealism, De anima served not only as a catalyst for his own reflections on the origin of the soul (with his perpetual hesitation between creationism and traducianism) but probably also as a loose inspiration for his own explanations regarding the soul in De Genesi ad litteram.

The article is dedicated to the relationship between modernization and Orthodox pilgrimage in Russia at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Reflecting on the interconnectedness of modernization processes, transportation development, and pilgrimage practices, the authors aim to address several related questions: Did modernization and new forms of transportation alter traditional Orthodox pilgrimage in Russia? Did modernity displace pilgrimage practices from the everyday and religious life of the Russian common folk? Or, on the contrary, did technological progress offer Orthodox pilgrimage in Russia a chance for a new phase of development? The article notes that transportation innovations, such as trains and steamships, changed the usual ways pilgrims traveled, freeing up their time and opening new spaces, which became places of spiritual interaction. These changes caused concern within the church, as it feared the potential influence of socialists and sectarians on pilgrims using the new forms of transport (steamships and trains). By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, pilgrimage gradually began to combine elements of tourism, indicating a shift in the perception of religious practices within a modernizing society. The authors conclude that, despite attempts by the peasantry to preserve traditional values, modernization did not displace pilgrimage but rather facilitated its transformation and growth. The new means of transportation not only simplified access to holy sites but also expanded the geographic reach of pilgrimages, allowing a larger number of believers to participate in religious journeys. Pilgrimage at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century exemplified how traditional religious practices could adapt to new conditions, retaining their significance and relevance in a rapidly changing world.

It has been well documented that the "way of salvation" was central to John Wesley's thought. But how did Methodists in the nineteenth century express a theology and spirituality of the way of salvation? This article examines formal doctrinal materials from Methodist churches (including catechisms, doctrinal statements, and hymnals) and the testimonies of l'vfethodist men and women to discern how teachings about the way of salvation were transmitted after the time of John and Charles Wesley. Based on these doctrinal works and personal testimonies, the article shows a consistent pattern in Methodist teaching and experience involving a) conviction of sin, b) conversion, c) struggles of the soul following conversion, and then d) entire sanctification.
