Carriages and coaches

The paper is devoted to the "great transport revolution" in Russia. The author shows that the users of passenger carriages in the Moscow state of the late Middle Ages were mostly women from aristocratic families. Aristocratic men usually rode on horseback. They could be forced to take a carriage only by illness or old age. In the 16th century, the kolymaga, which differed little from the medieval European carriages, remained main wheeled means of transportation in Russia. Late in the 16th century, more advanced European coaches with the body suspended on leather straps began to get to Moscow. Lexemes of European origin-carretta and coach-began to penetrate into the Russian language along with them. From the end of Ivan the Terrible's reign, coaches began to be used in diplomatic practice, which gradually created an idea of them as an element of prestige. The "transport revolution" in Russia was delayed by the Time of Troubles. From the middle of the 17th century, the number of European-made equipages began to increase in Moscow. In the late 1660s-early 1670s, coaches became fashionable among the Russian aristocracy. In 1681, the first decree restricting their use in Moscow was issued. It led to the widespread use of buggies. The "transport revolution" ended late in the 17th century.

A set of 19th-century furniture in black lacquer, on papier-mâché or on turned wood, has been subjected to an in-depth observational, historical and chemical study. The results show four different technological approaches: two for the papier-mâché objects and two for the wooden chairs. The cyclic labour-intensive lacquering procedure of repeated stoving and polishing lacquer on papier-mâché with mother-of-pearl inclusions is reflected in the crosssections. Pinaceae resin and heated oil are frequently found, conform with surviving recipes. A variant of 'the old form of varnish', as historically described, was likely used. In the two pairs of wooden chairs, the lacquer layers are thinner than on the papier-mâché items. They contain copal and show different stratigraphies. These observations can be the starting point to relate technological and chemical variations to different origins. New art historical findings on lacquer production and trade in England, France and Belgium, and the study of contemporary recipes, frame the analytical results in a historical context.

Seit dem 16. Jahrhundert, dem Beginn der sogenannten kleinen Eiszeit, verbreitete sich in vielen europäischen Ländern das Schlittenfahrten mit edlen Gespannen. Es begann mit fürstlichen Spielen und Paraden, ging über zu Maskeraden und endete in bürgerlichen Promenaden. Vor allem im Barock wurde das kollektive Schlittenfahren mit verzierten Rennschlitten auch in der Schweiz populär. Auf dem Land haben sich aus dem alten Brauch die Schlitteden Graubündens erhalten. In den Schweizer Städten verlor sich indessen das kollektive Schlittenfahren im 19. Jh. weitgehend.

Nicht so in der Stadt Basel. In der Stadt am Rhein kam es nach guten literarischen Quellen seit dem 17. Jh. im Winter immer wieder zu grossen Schlittenzügen mit über 100 Teilnehmenden. Davon zeugen bis heute erhaltene Schlitten mit reichen Verzierungen. Dabei dürfte Basel als Universitätsstadt mit eine Rolle gespielt haben. Jungmannschaften und Paare aus reichen alteingesessenen Familien führten dann den Brauch weiter. Noch bis ins späte 19. Jh. wurden vom Basler Grossbürgertum reich ausstaffierte Schlitten im Stil des Historismus angeschafft. Für das gemeinsame Schlittenfahren über den Ersten Weltkrieg hinaus gibt es gute Quellen. Bilder der Basler Kunstmaler Burkhard Mangold und Niklaus Stoecklin unterstreichen die Verankerung der Basler Schlittenfahrten im kollektiven lokalen Bewusstsein des 20. Jh.

Die Abläufe der Schlittenfahrten, die jeweils ins nahe Deutschland führten, werden hier rekonstruiert und in einem Exkurs die Rolle der daran wesentlich beteiligten Berufskutscher gewürdigt.

Auger Lucas (1685-1765) comenzó una prometedora carrera como pintor en París a principios del siglo XVIII, que le llevó a ganar el Grand Prix de Rome a los veinte años y a ser admitido en la Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture como pintor de historia. Sin embargo, el cambio en el sistema artístico que se estaba produciendo en esos años y la aparición de nuevas oportunidades laborales, ajenas a las disciplinas oficiales más tradicionales, le hicieron enfocar su trabajo hacia el ámbito de la pintura de carruajes. Esta especial dedicación le colocó en el centro de las polémicas del momento, que cuestionaban la jerarquía de la pintura, lo que acabaría condicionando su posterior fortuna crítica.

Présents, marchandises et objets de prestige à la Cour de Moldavie au XVIe siècle

Les relations commerciales de la Moldavie forment un des sujets qui ont constamment retenu l’intérêt des médiévistes roumains. Des documents publiés depuis la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle ont permis d’éclaircir un certain nombre d’aspects: les réseaux de transport, la naissance et le développement des foires commerciales, le type de marchandises importées et exportées, le volume des transactions, les monnaies en circulation, les institutions, ethnies, familles et individus impliqués dans le commerce, etc. Les études pionnières de N. Iorga, I. Nistor, G. Zane, Radu Manolescu ou Alexandru I. Gonţa trouvent leur continuation aujourd’hui, avec de beaux résultats, dans des monographies, des études ou des volumes collectifs. Malheureusement, trop peu des produits coûteux qui sont arrivés en Moldavie sous forme de marchandises ou de présents ont résisté à l’épreuve du temps. Combiner des informations écrites avec des sources archéologiques et trouver des analogies avec des pièces similaires conservées dans des collections et des musées d’autres pays peut être une méthode pour reconstituer l’apparence, la qualité et la destination des objets qui, au-delà de leur utilisation pratique, avaient également le rôle de marques d’identité: ils signalaient la supériorité sociale de leur propriétaire. La présente étude essaie de les identifier et de saisir leur signification, en recherchant quelques étoffes (drap et brocart panni d’oro), certains vêtements et tissus (çatma et velours benek) reçus en cadeau de la Porte Ottomane, des gants, des carrosses et des montres. Les présents reçus par les princes et les boyards moldaves du XVIe siècle, ainsi que les biens achetés au profit de la Cour, ne permettent pas de parler d’une vie aristocratique comme celle de l’Europe occidentale. Cependant, les étoffes précieuses, les vêtements moins communs, les moyens de transport décorés, les instruments techniques extravagants, la nourriture et les boissons d’un certain raffinement, tout dessine l’image d’une Cour de l’Est, où princes et boyards, prenant des modèles à la fois occidentaux et orientaux, s’efforçaient, avec leurs propres ressources et moyens, d’être contemporains du monde dans lequel ils vivaient.

Postal horns have been associated traditionally with bucolic topics in music. From Mozart to Mahler, the instrument appears in orchestral textures and songs to signify nostalgia for preindustrial rural life. The history of the coach horn, originally the standard postal instrument used on the British Royal Mail fleets, branched unexpectedly away from this paradigm when it was adopted for recreational use by socialites in urban areas in England, France, and other metropolitan hubs during the second half of the nineteenth century. In addition to performing the traditional
road signals, driving enthusiasts expanded the musical vocabulary of the coach horn to include elaborate fanfares and stylized ensemble music. Tracing the undocumented recreational history of the coach horn, this article interrogates coach horn manuals, compositions, and essays on coaching that overturn traditional assumptions about the instrument. These sources illustrate how coach horn signals helped reframe driving from a service activity to a healthful sport. Examining the rhetoric surrounding the coach horn during the period of its revival, this study shows how the new signals reflected promenade and salon culture by mimicking polite dialogue. The ensemble repertory written for coach horns also catered to urban popular taste and was cultivated to enhance metropolitan social events. Analysis further illustrates how revivalist fanfares aurally articulated social status in the outdoor urban arena. This
case study ultimately traces the cultural evolution of an instrument, a complex process through which old and new musical expectations were negotiated through composition and practice.

Als Präsident und Kaiser Frankreichs brachte er den französischen Wagenbau zur europäischen Hochblüte. Seine neuen Stallungen und Remisen im Louvre von Paris wurden zu den besten in Europa. – Was für Wagen fuhr er in der Stadt? Wie zog er ins Feld? Was genau geschah in Sedan? This paper provides a historical review of copal varnishes used for horse-drawn vehicles. The resin sources are identified in the context of modern botanical taxonomy and their chemistry is reviewed. Important developments in the manufacture of such varnishes are discussed, such as the discovery of new copal sources and advances in the techniques for boiling the drying oils. Information from the more accurate sources in the historical literature is supplemented with unpublished archival records of two important manufacturers, the activities of each of which spanned the 19th century: C. Schrack & Co. of Philadelphia, and Joseph Mason & Co. of Derby, United Kingdom. Issues of concern in the conservation of copal varnishes are addressed, notably the difficulties posed to the conservator by their historic use as a medium for glaze paints and their wide solubility parameters.

A float that has been used for religious processions in the small town of Camarena, Spain, since 1728 is here identified as a coach made in 1697 in the workshop of Cristoforo Schor in Naples for the new Spanish ambassador to the Holy See, Luis de Moscoso Osorio, Count of Altamira, to use for his ceremonial entry into Rome.

Johann Christian Ginzroth (1764-1831) constructed and designed carriages at the bavarian court in Munich at the beginning of the 19th. cent. Even without any classical education he studied the history of carriage-technique and -design in antiquity, systematically collecting representations on all kind of greek and roman objects. With these visual 'arguments' and his technological knowledge as a practitioner he published a two-volumes work (more then 100 plates) entitled "Die Wägen und Fahrwerke der Griechen und Römer und anderer alten Völker nebst der Bespannung, Zäumung und Verzierung ihrer Zug-, Reit und Last-Thiere" (München 1817) which became a book of reference during the 19th. and 20th. centuries. He explained the harnessing of horses and gave, as an expert, a new reconstruction of the hearse of Alexander the Great.
