This article presents the outcomes of a national survey set in Greece examining the preferences and choices of students with vision impairments on literacy medium for studying. In brief, this study explored (a) the students’ preferences regarding literacy medium for studying, (b) the students’ opinions regarding the best performance medium for their studying, and (c) the relationship between the students’ literacy medium preferences and choices in terms of their age, type of vision loss, and onset of vision impairment. Seventy-five primary and secondary students with vision impairments participated in the study. Relevant data were obtained through questionnaires, and the results showed that braille and large print were the preferred mediums for studying regardless of gender, age, type of vision loss, and onset of blindness. This study reports opinions and practices of teachers of students with visual impairments (TSVIs) in 34 states regarding functional literacy for students with visual impairments (VIs) and significant cognitive disabilities (SCDs). The survey asked TSVIs to select a definition of functional literacy, indicate agreement with a series of literacy statements for both students who use and do not use vision to access pictures and print, and list factors that contribute to successfully teaching functional literacy. Data from the survey returns were analyzed descriptively and McNemar’s test of paired proportions and the Mann Whitney U test were conducted to investigate response differences for some items. A high level of agreement was evident overall, but teacher perspective differed when considering students who cannot visually access pictures or print. Future research based on the larger data set will include an analysis of the mastery of the tangible symbols by the 51 students in the sample. In addition, the influence of demographic factors, such as the type of additional disabilities, level of visual impairment, age, and gender, on the mastery of symbols, will be analyzed. Comparisons between the parents' and educators' understanding of the children's functional communication will be analyzed as well. Future research may also consider practical issues that are associated with the implementation of a standardized set of tangible symbols. For example, educators could be surveyed about the quality of the product, time savings, and degree of individuation and their opinions about commercially produced versus homemade tangible symbols. An attempt has been made to understand the underlying components of Kashmiri music so as to make a conceptual analysis for designing an Information Storage and Retrieval System (IS & RS). The concepts thus analysed can act as a basis for development of an IS&RS for Kashmiri music records and can provide a broad framework for automation of library and its services in the Radio Kashmir, Srinagar. The main algorithmic steps set forth include: analysis of Kashmiri music into its entities; enlisting various attributes related to individual entities; and working out the relationships existing between various entities and between entities & attributes, putting the entities and attributes in an ordered manner to ensure individualisation; devising a data structure for storage purpose; maintain data independence; and finally devise a search mechanism to ensure fast, reliable and accurate retrieval. These steps have been supported with ER models and flow diagrams to understand the requirement clearly.

Introduction to Providing Rehabilitation to Individuals with Visual Impairments Who Are Using the Argus II Retinal Prosthesis System," highlights the training that orientation and mobility specialists need prior to working with adults who have received a retinal chip implant, the Argus II. This technology has the potential to enhance the orientation skills of the implant recipient when community rehabilitation occurs in a structured manner. The article offers suggestions for what this training might encompass in order to be functional for the user. I hope these diverse contributions to the literature create some level of cognitive dissonance as you think about these and other changes occurring in the field of visual impairment in the 21st century that may affect preservice and in-service training for professionals in the field, always with the goal of meeting the needs of children and adults who are visually impaired. Any changes in our field must not sacrifice quality, but there also needs to be a recognition that things may not be able to be accomplished the way they have always been done. As John F. Although there is an increased focus on reading instruction in schools, little is known about how teachers of students with extensive support needs are prepared to provide literacy instruction for this group of students. This paper reports the results of an exploratory study of how literary instruction is addressed within teacher education programs at institutions of higher education that prepare preservice and inservice teachers to work with students with extensive support needs. In Iowa, the practice of two-way interactive full motion video instruction is embodied in the use of the Iowa Communication Network (ICN). To facilitate innovative practices in distance education, the preservice component of the Iowa Distance Education Alliance's (IDEA) Teacher Education Alliance provided support for pilot projects which had the following goals: (1) support of Iowa teacher educators in innovative use of the ICN for distance education; (2) creation of activities that expand and enhance teacher education experiences; and (3) contribute to the distance education knowledge base. A workshop was conducted over the ICN to introduce a long-term science, mathematics, and technology education reform initiative. Participants' evaluations are presented. Research reports a e provided on projects that included: the preparation of multimedia-based instruction using the ICN, science instruction for students with disabilities, and professional networking opportunities through the ICN. The collection comprises of around 22 official languages ranging from Asami to Urdu. The collection also comprises of a variety of recording media ranging from earlier gramophone records to present day digital versatile discs (DVDs). Radio talks, interviews, discussions, situation and subject based programmes, musical concerts, songs (folk, classical, geet, ghazals), dramas, sports, humorous programmes, and so on depict the diversity of collection. Radio/TV Libraries in India need a reliable software ensuring safe & secure storage and reliable, fast and accurate retrieval of desired audio/video content. Moreover, there should be a mechanism to play the content, simultaneous upon its retrieval without losing any time. So the software should envisage instant and live linkage to such digital files from the database itself. A database was created using the MS Access 2007 Database Management System. Tables, queries, forms, macros, methods and procedures have been designed and developed to ensure reliable storage and fast/accurate retrieval of information. Digital files of songs have been stored outside the database linked to corresponding records in the database so that upon retrieval the particular song can be played instantly. The database can easily be operated in a networked atmosphere on client server mode of communication. The software will act as a reliable solution for development of an audio visual digital library of Hindustani film music.

This study investigated the background of personnel who are responsible for transcribing braille in Texas. Most respondents were not certified by the Library of Congress and believed that they had begun their careers less than adequately prepared, yet they rated the quality of the materials that they produced as either excellent or good.

This chapter strives to provide examples, explanations, research findings, and implications for use of AT with students with VI and blindness. First, we discuss various definitions of VI and blindness, prevalence of the impairments, common challenges associated with VI and blindness, and the process of fitting AT to students. We then focus on explanations and research findings on AT-relevant assessments of VI and blindness, and AT for pre-academic learning, reading, writing, mathematics, and science students. For each domain of learning, discussions of AT items are grouped according to whether the AT enhances the sight capabilities of users or engages senses and abilities other than sight. Last, we conclude by addressing a number of clinical and academic implications of use of AT with students with VI and blindness, including implications related to assessment, AT selection, teaching and encouraging use of AT, technology abandonment, and future research. 114 A. The music collection available in the Library of Radio Kashmir Srinagar (RKS) is of varied nature. The collection is stored on shelves in a haphazard manner merely in numerical sequence of tape numbers. The collection has neither been classified in accordance with any scheme of classification nor indexed or catalogued in accordance with any indexing system or cataloguing code. Hence no proficient storage and retrieval mechanism is in place. It has been observed that bibliographical information of the musical scores needs to be standardised and stored in a database and a dynamic retrieval procedure needs to be developed to ensure access to and retrieval of such information through various approaches of listeners and programme executives. This article described an innovative approach of integrating video analysis
into personnel preparation to bridge the gap between theory and prac-
tice in a teacher certification program for teacher candidates specializing
in learning disabilities (LD). First, the authors summarized the varied,
yet interrelated, purposes of utilizing video in teacher education. Second,
they described the use of video in the learning disabilities program within
Hunter College’s School of Education, detailing specific assignments that
promote a deeper understanding of teaching and learning. Third, they of-
fered suggestions for teacher educators who would like to integrate video
analysis into their existing programs. Finally, they evaluated the benefits
and limitations for using video analysis in the professional development of
in-service teachers of students with learning disabilities.
