În copilărie, am fost foarte atent la poveștile pe care tatăl meu-ofiţer de artilerie antiaeriană, pilot la aviaţia sportivă și, apoi, la aviaţia utilitară-le spunea în familie. Atunci am aflat că nu aveam voie să le spun mai departe, deoarece autorităţile din România se puteau răzbuna pe cei care persiflau sau puneau sub semnul întrebării capacitatea liderilor politici de la București de a menţine controlul asupra personalului care lucra în domeniul aviaţiei. Ascultam și mă străduiam să înţeleg relatările despre piloţii și mecanicii care glumeau pe aerodrom și care, în același timp, știau că zborul este o îndeletnicire serioasă și periculoasă.

Dato-ritA editurii «Carpatii» de la Madrid, am putut aduce la cunostinta publicului cititor roman din exil, prin lucrarea «Istoria politica si milita-rA a rasboiului RomAniei contra Rusiei sovietice» apArutA in anul 1965 cauzele acestui rAsboiu si desfasurarea lui de-alungul celor trei ani de eforturi si sacrificii pentru apararea frontierei de est a Orli si a independentei poporului romAn. Dacd evenimentele politice la cari a participat Romania, precum si acelea cari au obligat-o sA faca. rAsboiu Rusiei sovietice sunt suficient de explicite in acea lucrare pentru a se intelege motivele mai mult de cat intemeiate pentru cari am fAcut acel rAsboiu, nu acelas lucru se poate spune despre descrierea tns4i a rasboiului. Asa dupa cum am arAtat in «Introducerea» acelei lucrAri n'am putut avea atunci o documentare completa asupra tuturor marilor operatiuni la cari au participat trupele romAne. In special mi-au lipsit date asupra bataliei de la Odesa si asupra operatiilor armatei a 6-a germane din Basarabia dupd 23.8.44. Ulterior, gasind documentdri si lucrAri referitoare la aceste operatii, le-am completat, sau chiar am adAogat un capitol nou, cum a fost cazul descrierii bAtAliei din Basarabia dupA 23 August si care s'a terminat cu distrugerea armatei a 6-a germane. Desi dupd 23 August n'a mai participat la aceasta b 'Mahe nici o unitate romaneasca, totusi am socotit ca ea intra in studiul rAsboiului nostru, pentru cd pe de o parte armata a 6-a germana a fAcut parte in acea bAtAlie din grupul de armate general Petre Dumitrescu impreuna cu armata a treia romAnd, iar pe de alta. parte aceasta armatA germanA a cAzut luptAnd eroic tocmai pe teritoriul Basarabiei, care ne fusese rapitA de Rusia si pentru care noi am fAcut acesteia rdsboiul nostru. De asemenea am mai adus completdri referitoare la desfAsurarea bAtAliei din Moldova si Basarabia din August 1944, precum si la luptele de langd Bucuresti intre 24 si 27 August 1944. Romania nu este o mare putere mondiala care poate sä impund cu forta, ceia ce socote*te a este dreptul ei. 0 tara mica i un popor mic nu- §i poate permite sa sustina drepturi imaginare asupra unor teritorii, pentru ca stapanirea lor depinde de recunoa §terea marilor puteri, cari in epoca noastra fac acte de justitie. Pentru ca aceste mari puteri sa recunoasca drepturile unui popor asupra unui teritoriu in litigu, trebue ca aceste drepturi sa fie sprijinite pe trecutul istoric i pe statisticile populaPei la diferite epoci. De aceia, pentru intelegerea acestiu rasboi, este necesara o expunere cat de sumara asupra inceputurilor poporului roman, find o stransa legatura intre wzarea de veacuri a acestui popor la nord de Dunare i la vest de Nistru, §i rasboiul Romaniei contra Rusiei. Pamantul românesc a fost locuit in timpurile cele mai vechi cunoscute de istorie, de poporul trac, impartit in mai multe ramuri, intre cari gasim la nord de Dunare pe daci i geP, amintiti de istoricii din secolele 5-2 a. Din aceste contacte, limba romana a inceput sa fie cunoscuta si de indigeni. S'a intamplat si aici acelas fenomen ca si in Galia. Cand Cezar a inceput expeditia de cucerire a Galiei, aceasta tara era plina de negustori si oameni de afaceri romani, asa cum spune Cicero in discursul lui «Pro Fonteio». Dupa Cezar, a murit si Boerebista tot asasinat, iar marele lui regat a fost impartit in doua regate, cari cu timpul s'au faramitat in mai multe alte regate. Romanii profitand de aceasta slabire a puterii dacice au facut mai multe expeditii la nord de Dunare si ridicand multa populatie dacogeta au transplantat-o in Moesia (la sud de Dunare). Aceasta stare de neputinta a daco-getilor se termina odata cu venirea regelui Decebal pe tronul unuia din regatele dacice. Acest rege a intrunit sub autoritatea lui mai multe regate, reusind sa refaca in mare parte regatul lui Boerebista; apoi a atacat Moesia. Imparatul Domitian al Romei, trimite cloud expeditii succesive in contra lui Decebal, dar acesta bate legiunile romane, prinde pe comandantii acestora si-i executa. A treia expeditie comandata de Tettius Iulianus, este mai fericita pentru romani. The writings of H. P. Lovecraft are not commonly associated with gunplay. Even though his fiction found publication primarily in pulp magazines, even his lesser works exude more sophistication than most of the dime-a-dozen stories with which they were printed. Lovecraft’s works nevertheless feature firearms often. In keeping with their common theme of humanity confronting the seen or unseen other, many of his tales feature characters wielding weapons. True to Lovecraft’s American heritage and the times in which he lived, this means, more often than not, that the protagonists reach for their guns. Just like real people of his era, they arm themselves upon taking action—or when they are frightened. These actions are often only circumstantial—what good is a revolver against an intangible, ancient evil?—but are sometimes essential to the plot or ending. In spite of the regular presence of firearms in his work, Lovecraft’s portrayal of guns has been largely overlooked by scholars. The one story that features an actual gunfight has been criticized for it. Indeed, Lovecraft himself—the bibliophile, the withdrawn gentleman, the sickly shut-in—appears an unlikely gun enthusiast. And yet, as we will see, Lovecraft not only enjoyed guns, collected guns, and shot guns, he also portrayed them often and in sometimes remarkable detail throughout much of his diverse œuvre.

Since the beginning of humanitarian mine action (HMA) in the late 1980s, the sector has relied heavily on donor support. The funding is provided through various channels and covers the full range of HMA activities, including risk education, survey and clearance, stockpile destruction, victim assistance, advocacy, capacity building, and coordination. Over the years, donors have also influenced the HMA sector in more ways than by just providing money. For example, MASG members have called for the development of common sector-wide standards (e.g., International Mine Action Standards), hosted technical workshops and training activities, and actively participated in international and national level meetings. Thus, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit the world in late 2019, it not only impacted operators, international organizations, and national authorities, but also created new challenges for donors as well

As a great person of culture, Calistrat Hogaș had a complex character. The great pedagogical and protecting husband/father qualities blended with an adventurous and sometimes quick to anger (like a summer storm, as his daughter Sidonia described him) character, which often led himself to potentially dangerous situations. In this context, the possession of a handgun was both a modality of expressing his prestige, as well as of protecting from dangers and even protecting his honor, a very important aspect in those times. Calistrat Hogaș had a Belgian Lefaucheux revolver, which was an exquisite gun because of its aspect (nickel-plated steel, vegetal, floral and geometric engraved decorations, ivory grips), as well as because of its construction and functional characteristics (early Lefaucheux design, using 12 mm caliber rimfire ammunition). After researching, we discovered that his revolver was produces by Lepage Frères company in Belgium before 1877, also being tested and proofed in Liège according to the Napoleonic war from 1810. The handgun is a part of the "Calistrat Hogaș" Memorial Museum collections since 1968 (according to the inventory registry), as a donation of Sidonia Hogaș, it is in a good condition and it deserves to be classed in the thesaurus category. Prezența Rusiei în sudul Caucazului a crescut mai ales în deceniul 1800-1810 când cea mai mare parte a Georgiei, Imeretiei și a unor hanate tătare vasale Persiei (Șeki, Shuragel, Șirvan, Gandja, Baku, Quba, Taliș) au intrat sub ocrotirea Sankt Petersburgului. Trupele ruse care au cucerit aceste teritorii au fost însărcinte și cu administrarea lor. Șefii militari ai acestor trupe, cunoscuți inițiali ca și comandanți-șefi ai Georgiei iar apoi ca și comandanți ai Caucazului, aveau atribuții speciale. Aceștia trebuiau să respingă atacurile principalilor inamici ai Rusiei de la granițele Caucazului, să asigure liniștea și ordinea în teritoriile pe care le conduceau și să garanteze administrarea eficientă a acestora. Evident că misiunea acestora a fost deosebit de dificilă mai ales că aceşti comandanţi-şefi, în totalitate militari de carieră, aveau în subordine regiuni cu un amestec semnificativ de popoare şi culturi. În ciuda viziunilor diferite exprimate de unii istorici despre cum aceştia au reuşit să facă faţă sarcinilor primite trebuie menţionat că Rusia ţaristă şi-a menţinut supremaţia în Caucaz peste o sută de ani.

The transfer of microstamped identifiers to the primers of fired cartridges was examined using a stereomicroscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The identifiers were placed on the firing pins of three dif ferent 9mm handguns, namely, a Sig Sauer, a Taurus, and a Hi-Point. Ten different brands of ammunition were fired from each handgun, 100 rounds being fired using each brand for a total of 1000 rounds fired per handgun. The quality of the markings was evaluated using a simple observation rubric. These results were compared to Vickers hardness values obtained from the ammunition primers and are discussed in light of the types of actions of firearms used. and of course, firearms. Lucrarea prezentă se concentrează pe o analiză a raporturilor dintre armată și societate în Republica Populară Română, cu precădere perioada dintre 1948 și 1957. Cercetarea debutează cu o serie de explicații referitoare la viziunile lui Marx și Lenin în ceea ce privește noțiunea
de armată populară. În continuare, discuția se va concentra pe câteva aspecte definitorii probate în timpul Revoluției din octombrie 1917, care au în vizor rolul militarilor. De la acestea, am trecut la Armata Republicii Populare Române pentru a observa aplicabilitatea principiilor celor doi părinți ideologi ai comunismului, dar și cum actori importanți locali precum Gheorghe Gheorghiu–Dej sau Emil Bodnăraș modelează armata după propriile viziuni. Totodată, textul prezintă și o analiză a
nivelului de școlarizare a militarilor și informații statistice ce privesc mediului de proveniență al soldaților armatei R.P.R.. În final, studiul se termină cu ilustrarea unui interviu și a unor documente
sociale.

During history, the old Romanian noble family Dunca de Sajo (Şieu) from Maramureş gaveimportant personalities both to Romania and Hungary. In this paper I will discuss about certain descendants who lived in Moldavia during the second half of XIXth century. The paper will explore the actions of Dunca brothers and their cousin, heroes for five nations, their battles, courage and heroism in many battlefields across Europe and United States, anywhere the destiny took them.

Ethnoarchaeology is a broad field, sharing interests with material culture studies of all sorts, including history. Our special contribution is is to promote an approach to technology that is both more anthropological in looking at the social context and how people use and think about technology, and more hands-on, examining the technology itself, the chaˆine ope´ratoire, the entire sequence of manufacture and use as embedded in a culture, and the material results.

Primul Război Mondial (1914-1918) a reprezentat un moment de cotitură în istoria conflictelor armate, marcând tranziția de la metodele tradiționale de luptă la războiul industrializat modern. Articolul analizează principalele strategii militare și inovații tehnologice care au influențat desfășurarea și rezultatul acestui conflict.
În centrul strategiei s-a aflat războiul de tranșee, care a dus la o stagnare a fronturilor și la utilizarea tacticilor de uzură. Pe lângă aceasta, tehnologiile emergente, precum utilizarea tancurilor, războiul aerian și dezvoltarea submarinelor (U-boat), au remodelat câmpul de luptă. Războiul chimic, introdus pe scară largă, a evidențiat brutalitatea inovațiilor tehnologice în slujba conflictului.
Totodată, războiul de artilerie a dominat luptele, iar noile tehnici de comunicare, inclusiv utilizarea radioului și a telegrafului, au permis coordonarea mai eficientă a operațiunilor. Aspectele logistice și mobilizarea totală a resurselor economice și umane au evidențiat natura globalizată a războiului. În paralel, războiul psihologic și propaganda au fost utilizate pentru a mobiliza sprijinul populației și a demoraliza inamicul.
Lucrarea concluzionează că aceste inovații și strategii au transformat războiul într-un conflict de uzură totală, redefinind modul în care războaiele următoare aveau să fie purtate. Ele au avut un impact semnificativ asupra ordinii geopolitice și au pregătit terenul pentru viitorul conflict global din 1939-1945.

Background The 300 Winchester Magnum is a well established cartridge in the US arsenal. Recent modernization initiatives focused around rifles and ammunition are advancing the effectiveness of this proven cartridge. This Weapon Employment Zone (WEZ) analysis [REF 1] is intended to quantify how the hit percentage of the 300 Winchester Magnum is improved thru these modernization efforts. Primarily the ballistic performance of various ammunition types will be evaluated.

THIS CARTRIDGE CASE IS THUS NOT ONLY A RARE SURVIVING MARK III BUT ALSO HAD A NON-STANDARD PROELLANT MAKING IT EVEN SCARCER AND WAS MADE AT THE ROYAL LABORATORY IN WOOLWICH, THE MOST OBVIOUS LOCATION FOR AN EXPERIMENTAL ROUND.

This article is based on most available sources (archival documents, field manuals, memorialistic works, battlefield-recovered relics) and its goal is to establish a basic level of knowledge on the subject for further researchers, by providing in exclusivity important data about this unique grenade family designed and used by the Romanian Army during the Great War. The second part of the article covers the process of reverse engineering the relic parts of the grenade and creating a high-fidelity 3D model and 1:1 replica.

Lead contamination is a worldwide problem that affects the health of several bird species and can cause biodiversity loss. However, in South America there is little information about this problem and the species affected. The aim of this study is to compile existing knowledge about lead contamination in South American bird species and propose actions to mitigate this problem. Through a literature search, we found 39 scientific articles on this topic studying 68 bird species. Most studies came from Argentina and Brazil (71.7%), but also from Chile (7.7%), Venezuela (7.7%), Colombia (5.1%), Bolivia (2.6%), Ecuador (2.6%) and Peru (2.6%). Almost all the articles were published between 2001 and 2017. Waterbirds and birds of prey were the avian guilds more studied. Seventy percent of the studies show individuals with lead concentrations that exceed established thresholds levels. The few available articles suggest that lead contamination may be a continental-scale problem produced by different sources like fuels, mining, industries and hunting ammunition. However, lead ammunition seems to be an underestimated source of lead which is producing the highest toxic levels in bird species from South America. To our knowledge, there are regulations about different lead sources but not for lead ammunition in any country, except for some regions in Argentina. The progressive banning of lead from all sources and particularly from hunting ammunition is the main and most effective way to reduce the risk for wildlife. Current obstacles must be overcome through a combined effort of governments, wildlife managers and local communities.

Although most homicide victims are men, the Caribbean as a region also faces one of the world’s highest rates of violent deaths among women. While much emphasis has been placed on firearms control at both the political and operational levels, illicit firearms and the dynamics of illicit arms markets in this region have received little research attention. In response, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (IMPACS) partnered with the Small Arms Survey to carry out a comprehensive evidence-based study of illicit arms trafficking to and within the Caribbean, and the socio-economic costs of firearm-related violence in the region. This Report examines these issues by drawing on data and information collected from 13 of the 15 CARICOM member states and from 22 Caribbean states in total. The study also incorporates the results of original fieldwork undertaken by regional partners, including interviews with prison inmates serving firearm-related sentences, and research in selected hospitals related to gunshot wounds and the associated medical costs and productivity losses for patients.

What drives the prices of arms and ammunition sold at illicit markets? Do the prices of illegal arms soar during episodes of marked insecurity, such as conflict onset? This article seeks to advance knowledge on the dynamics and determinants of weapons prices through the quantitative analysis of illicit arms market price data in Lebanon for the period February 2011 to September 2012. The article also examines the relationship between arms and ammunition prices in Lebanon, and reported conflict fatalities in Syria, as the period under study overlapped with the onset of conflict in the latter country. Key results include strong, statisticallysignificant correlations between the prices of arms and the prices of ammunition in Lebanon, as well as between the prices of arms and ammunition in Lebanon and reported conflict fatalities in neighbouring Syria. These findings highlight the value of monitoring illicit arms market prices, including prices for a diverse range of weapons and ammunition, to improve our understanding of both illicit markets and conflict dynamics. The strong correlations observed in the article also suggest that crowdsourcing methodologies used by organisations monitoring killings during the Syrian conflict can effectively capture variations in conflict intensity over time.

În primăvara anului 1967, autorităţile de la Bucureşti au fost nevoite să analizeze din nou relaţiile lor cu liderii politici de la Moscova, în contextul „Războiului de 6 zile” desfăşurat în Orientul Mijlociu (5-10 iunie 1967). Una dintre măsurile propuse încă din luna aprilie 1967 de politicienii comunişti din Cehoslovacia, sprijiniţi de cei sovietici, a fost implicarea României în Orientul Mijlociu prin punerea unui contingent militar românesc la dispoziţia Consiliului de Securitate al O.N.U.

This article reviews research undertaken over the past two decades to support international policy on small arms and light weapons (SALW)-which include firearms-and discusses its relevance to academic debates and policy on gun violence. It examines whether SALW research generated a greater understanding of the most problematic uses and users of firearms, and of the role of different weapons as instruments of violence. SALW research helped shift international policy from armed conflicts to gun violence occurring in a range of developing and post-conflict settings, and in Europe following the 2015-16 terror attacks. This work underscored the proximate weapons sources that armed groups often utilise, and the importance of flows of certain weapons-such as converted firearms-and ammunition in fuelling violence. Undertaking impact evaluations of novel interventions, monitoring the impact of new technologies, and investigating the relationship between ammunition supply and violence are suggested ways forward.

Based on the original archive sources, in the custody of the funds of the National Archive of the Republic of Moldova, the article analyzes the educational activity and in the field of physical training in Bessarabia of the Independent Corps of Gendarmes in 1867-1917. The importance of the research is determined by the fact that the gendarmes represented a specialized state institution in the suppression of the national current in Bessarabia, the Russification of the province and its transformation into a simple Russian government. Using documentary data, the author investigates issues related to the process of educating gendarmes, combat training, in the composition of which an essential role was given to physical training.

This Critical Appraisal explores the challenges and importance of defining small arms and light weapons (SALW) using precise and internationally applicable terminology. It draws on three of the author’s earlier publications that collectively address the need for a robust framework to classify SALW based on their observable properties. By focusing on these inherent qualities, the author’s research proposes a foundation for definitions which can transcend national and occupational boundaries. The Critical Appraisal highlights the deficiencies in existing definitions, which often lack nuance and fail to distinguish between key types of arms, relying instead on incomplete lists of examples or vague terminology. These limitations hinder effective international cooperation on SALW-related issues. The author’s research emphasises the need to move away from extensional and role-based definitions towards intensional definitions based on the mechanical and physical characteristics of SALW. The Critical Appraisal highlights the significance of terminology for effective international collaboration and meaningful communication in the academic and lay contexts. It weaves together the evolving narrative of the three publications, starting with the co-edited handbook, An Introductory Guide to the Identification of Small Arms, Light Weapons, and Associated Ammunition, followed by the book chapter, ‘Classifying Firearms’, and culminating in the most recent publication, The ARES Arms and Munitions Classification System (ARCS). The works underpinning this Critical Appraisal draw upon a variety of research techniques, including literature review, document analysis, technical analysis, legal review, mechanical assessments, and expert interviews. The Critical Appraisal underscores, in particular, the comprehensive and practical nature of ARCS, its adoption by esteemed organisations, and its relevance to fields such as political science, international relations, defence studies, and international law. Ongoing development of ARCS and other initiatives will continue to enhance technical communication surrounding SALW, promoting consistency and clarity in the classification of arms and munitions.

În baza izvoarelor de arhivă inedite, aflate în custodia fondurilor Arhivei Naționale a Republicii Moldova, în articol este analizat procesul înființării în Basarabia a Corpului de jandarmi în primele cinci decenii după anexare. Importanța cercetării este determinată de faptul că jandarmii reprezentau instituție specializată a statului în suprimarea curentului național în Basarabia, rusificarea provinciei și transformarea ei într-o simplă gubernie rusească. Folosind datele documentale, autorul cercetează probleme ce țin de organizarea Corpului de jandarmi, componența și structura sa de cadre, efectul activității asupra vieții sociale a provinciei. Organ represiv al guvernului țarist, Corpul de jandarmi din Basarabia în prima perioadă a activității sale s-a recomandat ca o instituție puțin eficientă, incapabilă să înăbușe sentimentele naționale la populația autohtonă.

În articolul de față sunt analizate problemele ce țin de practica aprovizionării unităților ruse staționate în Basarabia în perioada anilor 1856-1874 cu mijloace de transport. Asigurarea logistică a armatei ruse ocupa un loc important în activitatea cotidiană a oficialilor militari din Imperiul Rus. Prin complexitatea problemelor rezolvate, această problemă ocupa al doilea loc după problemele ce vizau pregătirea de luptă și instruirea efectivului. Problema majoră a armatei erau posibilitățile reduse de a transporta enormele cantități de material necesar existenței sale atât pe timp de pace, cât și pe timp de război. Anual, din gospodăriile localnicilor erau extrase de la 7 mii până la 12,5 mii de care și trăsuri de transport, care erau întrebuințate în serviciul unităților militare dislocate în ținut.

The revised results of this live-fire experiment with colonial, Revolutionary War, and American Civil War firearms add to the investigation of late pre-modern gun use and enhance our previous work on colonial-era firearms (Scott et al. revised 2024). To determine what happens when large-caliber lead balls, shot, and conical bullets were used in combat or hunting we observed impacts of experimentally fired projectiles into ballistic gelatin, an accepted tissue simulant with end coverings to simulate clothing of the era, and into a sand backstop. Projectile deformation associated with varied ranges were catalogued. The results of these experiments will permit archaeologists to better interpret recovered projectiles.

The Armament Research and Development Center at Picatinny Arsenal has developed a Soft Catch Gun system that that fires a 155mm projectile through a 170-meter tube containing a series of mechanisms meant to decelerate and ultimately catch the projectile. The goal of the “soft catch” is to determine whether sensor and guidance components added to the projectiles can survive the extreme forces exerted during the launch. To date, various sources of variability have resulted in a 63% success rate after more than 700 shots. This research aims to improve the system catch rate by creating a predictive statistical model that will assist operators in determining specific settings for system inputs given a projectile type and charge. Our approach uses analysis of system pressure gauges and regression techniques to characterize system behavior. În acest studiu am discris rolul avut de mareșalii Curții regelui Mihai I în timpul celei de a doua domnii a regelui Mihai (1940-1947). În primii ani, prerogativele suveranului au fost foarte limitate în favoarea președintelui Consiliului de Miniștri, generalul Ion Antonescu, care a preluat controlul asupra Curții Regale. În timp ce întâiul mareșal al Curții numit de guvern (colonelul Râmniceanu) a declarat că el este înainte de toate omul generalului Antonescu, următorii în funcție (colonelul Mardare și Teodor Rosetti-Solescu) au asigurat un oarecare echilibru al relațiilor dintre Palat și Antonescu. Cel mai tânăr (Mocioni-Stârcea) și succesorul său (generalul Sănătescu) au luat parte la actul de la 23 august 1944. Ultimul (Negel) i-a fost alături regelui în anii sovietizării țării.

In this study I have described the historical role that the Marshals of the Royal Court of Romania had during the second reign of king Michael (1940-1947). In the first years, the sovereign’s powers were very limited in favor of the prime-minister, general Antonescu, who also seized control of the Royal Court. While the first marshal of the Court named by the government (colonel Râmniceanu) declared his foremost loyalty to general Antonescu, the following dignitaries (colonel Mardari or Teodor Rosetti-Solescu) assured a balance between the Palace and Antonescu. The youngest (Mocioni-Styrcea) and his succesor (general Sănătescu) participated in the royal coup of 23th August 1944. The last (Negel) was besides the king during the Soviet takeover of the country.

Actul de la 23 august 1944 a dus la ruperea relațiilor României cu Germania în vederea capitulării în fața Aliaților. Rezultatul - o ripostă germană promptă - fusese îndelung discutat de grupul care a orchestrat lovitura de stat, în mod deosebit de către ofițerii care au luat parte la pregătiri. În timp ce un plan general pentru o contraofensivă românească a fost stabilit la un nivel național, o prioritate deosebită a fost acordată capitalei, care trebuia păstrată în afara mâinilor dușmanului cu orice preț. Planul apărării militare a capitalei a fost stabilit împreună cu colonelul Dumitru Dămăceanu, șeful de stat-major al Comandamentului Militar al Capitalei. Sub autoritatea nominală a superiorului său, generalul Iosif Teodorescu, Dămăceanu a luat conducerea operațiunilor militare române în faza inițială a Bătăliei Bucureștiului din 24-28 august. Memoriile lui Dămăceanu, rămase inedite, ne prezintă o serie de detalii noi privind încleștările dintre unitățile române și germane din București și împrejurimi. 

The royal coup of 23 August 1944 led to Romania breaking ties with Germany in order to capitulate to the Allies. The outcome - a hastily German retaliation - had been long discussed by the group that orchestrated the coup, especially by the officers that took part in preparations. While a general plan for a Romanian counter-offensive was agreed at a national level, a special priority was given to Bucharest, that was to be kept out of enemy hands at all costs. The plan for a military defence of the capital was agreed with Colonel Dumitru Dămăceanu, chief-of-staff of the Bucharest Military Command. Under the nominal authority of his superior, General Iosif Teodorescu, Dămăceanu took charge of the Romanian operations during the initial phase of the Battle for Bucharest of 24-28 August. Dămăceanu’s memoirs, remaining unpublished, present to us a series of new details surrounding the clashes between the Romanian and German units in Bucharest and its surroundings.

When they wrote of their exploits after the 25 December 1846 battle, Veterans of Brazito only vaguely described the battle site itself. Apparently, little about its appearance demanded comment. Camino Real traveler Susan Shelby Magoffin noted in her diary (12 February 1847) that the battlefield was on "a perfect plain." A few years later (19 April 1851) John R. Bartlett stopped at the battlefield and noted that it was "on the open plain."] Early twentieth-century inhabitants of Mesilla Valley placed the battlefield somewhere in the vicinity of Brazito Schoolhouse, some two and one-half miles north of the village of Mesquite on New Mexico Highway 478. Later historians interested in locating the actual battle site had little else to use since only two battlefield maps are known to exist: the map produced by battle participant Frank S. Edwards, and published in John Hughes' account of Colonel Doniphan's campaign (figure 1); and a map included in the journal kept by battle participant Marcellus B. Edwards. 2 Both maps lack a scale, which limits their usefulness in locating the battlefield. George Ruhlen and Andrew Armstrong tried to determine its location by comparing the daily mileages noted in the diaries of several of the Missourians. Both historians resorted to this method because the landscape of the Mesilla Valley has changed considerablysince 1846. They concluded that the battlefield was probably located farther to the south, as much as ten miles away from the schoolhouse. 3 The most important battlefield landmark, the brazito, ceased to exist

Romanian's participation in the second world war will bring in the attention of Romanian authorities a new issue, concerning the resolution for the status of Romanian prisoners fallen on the East front and not only. During the entire military conflagration numerous soldiers of the Soviet forces before stopping the hostilities and after. As soon as Romania has joined the U.N., the coalition in the war against Hitler, Romanian Army will register a significant number of prisoners, captured by Wermacht, a great part of them coming in the possession of the Russians.
