Between Decadence and Humanism: in Athens and Rome.
The tension between creative individuals and society in Athens in the fifth century BC lead to the emergence of ideological phenomena akin to European decadence, but the course of ideas here invariably remained closely linked to the common life of the state. With the rise of Macedonia, Athens loses its true independence, and the space for public life is markedly reduced. However, the new Attic comedy and the work of Menander in particular reveal a development not in the decadent, but in the humanistic direction, which can be partly explained in terms of the deliverance of Athens from the burden of imperialism. In Rome, decadent gestures are characteristic of political leaders and rulers with a low level of legitimacy – such as Sulla, Caligula, and Nero. In Roman literature, the closest to European decadence is Petronius' Satyricon, where immoralism and aestheticism appear hand in hand. At the same time, Petronius is in a sense a decadent willy-nilly; his tendency to decadence is connected with the impossibility of following his own largely classicist ideals.

Dido, the tragic queen of Carthage in Virgil’s The Aeneid, serves as a  figure whose story brings together love, politics, and destiny. This study examines her role through primary analysis of Aeneid Books 1, 4, and 6, alongside ancient sources such as Ovid’s Heroides, which present alternative narratives of her character. Scholarly perspectives, from feminist readings (Marilyn B. Skinner) to historical allegory (W. R. Johnson), highlight Dido as both a victim of Aeneas’ imperial mission and a cultural  symbol of resistance. Historical contexts further illuminate the real-world Carthaginian influences shaping Virgil’s portrayal. This research argues and proves that Queen Dido of Carthage transcends history as more than just a figure in Aeneas’s story, instead offering a critique of power, gender and the role of the gods in Ancient Roman work.

"георгическа" литература на Античността - от една страна, Rusticus е използван като дидактичен инструмент и учебен коментар към класическите автори, от друга е ценен високо като автономна поетична творба.

A szakirodalom -így irodalomtörténeti kézikönyvünk is -a barokk korszakig leginkább alkalmi költészet címszó alatt említi e költeményeket. A megajándékozók között akadtak kiváló költők, az ő verseik természetes része életművüknek, ezért új-és új kiadást élnek meg. A köszöntő versek a magas irodalomtól, jeles költők műveitől kezdők (többnyire diákok) próbálkozásaiig minőségileg nagyon különbözőek lehetnek. Számbavételük, a velük való szisztematikus foglalkozás eddig csak esetleges volt. A besorolásnál, bizonyára nem indok nélkül, az alkalmi szó lekicsinylő jelentésű. A köszöntő verseknek a 19. századig mindenképpen funkciója volt a közéletben. Erről tanúskodnak azok az adatok, melyek arra utalnak, hogy nyilvánosan előadták, előadatták azokat. Hogy érdemben tudjuk jellemezni az egy-egy gócpontban (például egyházi vagy világi főméltóság környezetében) létrejött alkotásokat, azok elhangzásának körülményeit, szükséges ezen próbálkozásokat számba venni. Az esztergomi érsekekhez kapcsolódó alkalmi köszöntők, versek, szónoklatok, színjátékszerű előadások, alkalmi képzőművészeti emlékek közül most néhány Barkóczy Ferencre vonatkozó, eddig ismeretlen adatot közlünk. Gróf Barkóczy Ferencről irodalomtörténet-írásunkban már gyakran esett szó. Lucretius innovates upon prior Epicurean philosophers by making the discussion of atomic movement in his didactic epic not just a complement to his exegesis of Epicurean philosophy, but in developing new scientific explanations for Epicurean doctrine through the principles of atomic motion. I claim that Lucretian tranquility is a kinetic phenomenon, an approach which provides new insight on the psychological and the ethical elements of his philosophy, and allows his On the Nature of Things to be brought into a fuller conversation with current scholarship on Epicurean psychology and ethics. I examine how atomic movement is emulated on the individual/psychological and societal/ethical level through metaphor and allegory. The leaky vessel and the honeyed cup refer to the link between atomic turbulence and the psychological realm: representing emotional imbalance and its opposite. Meanwhile, allegories of Venus and Mars represent the unifying and disruptive effects of atomic movement in interpersonal relationships and society. Finally, I propose that Lucretius' plague account enshrines mutual aid and self-sacrifice without violating the principles of Epicurean egoism, establishing ethical behavior as an essential component of tranquility.

The exodus from Egypt played a pivotal role in Jewish-pagan polemics from the beginning of the Hellenistic period till far into the Imperial period. Pagan polemicists stood the biblical story of the liberation of the Israelites from bondage in Egypt upon its head and portrayed an extremely negative image of Israelite origins. They also pictured the Jewish people as misanthropes and atheists. Jewish-Hellenistic authors reacted to these attacks in a wide variety of ways (e.g., novels, drama, philosophical treatise).

This work wants to place chronologically the Greek or Latin works and authors mentioned in the First part of the General Estoria, and, at the same time, adds some clarifications about the proper names of these writers, which, frequently, have come down to us with unrecognizablespellings in theAlfonso’s work. In total, the contribution includes 32 Greek and 15 Latin authors, distributed, when possible, in chronological order.

Arachne, one of the most widely discussed figures in Ovid's metamorphic universe, has often been seen as one of many Doppelgänger of the poet. Particular attention has been devoted to the contest between the highly talented Maeonian girl and Minerva: their respective tapestries have been read as manifestos of different poetics, and the final transformation, inscribed in the very name of the protagonist, has been seen as an allegorical transfiguration of Ovid's own exile. This chapter, following the path suggested by the editors of this volume, focuses on Arachne herself as a worker, proposing two interrelated points. Firstly, Arachne is punished by the goddess in a particularly ingenious way because her work as a weaver is now deprived of the significance of art and reduced to pure labor, which is the bodily necessity of a spider but bearing no meaning. Secondly, Arachne, although she fully masters her art, audaciously but consistently refuses to identify with the profession of a weaver. Minerva's punishment re-establishes the balance: as a spider, Arachne is compelled to weave by a natural necessity, reducing her will to an endless but meaningless activity that leaves no room for her intellectual aspirations: her imaginative work ends up being only pure labor.

This article is an attempt to present the image of animals in ancient literature based on three selected literary sources. In the course of the considerations, the Commentarii de Bello Gallico by Julius Caesar, Historia Naturalis by Pliny the Elder and the speech On eating meat by Plutarch of Chaeronea are analyzed. This type of choice was dictated primarily by the nature of the above works. All of them present a different literary genre, and as result in the author's opinion, they will allow for a proper illustration of the discussed issues.

International Conference: "Sibyls, Prophets, and Oracles: Texts and Images from Ancient to Contemporary Times".

In 1994, Ileana Chirassi Colombo organized an international conference on “Sibyls and Oracular Languages” at the University of Macerata, gathering ancient historians, medievalists, and modernists. The conference opened fruitful avenues of research at the intersection of history, history of religions, and anthropology. One of the intriguing issues was the peculiar localization of a Sibyl in the Umbrian-Marche Apennines, which gave its name to Mount Sibyl and the Sibillini Mountains. In the following years, research on this theme multiplied, and the Apennine Sibyl became the focal point of vibrant studies, but also generated a great deal of pseudo-scientific literature.
To provide an updated overview and with the aim of exploring original research paths, thirty years later the University of Macerata intends to organize a conference on sibylline, prophetic, and oracular themes. The investigation will encompass literary and iconographic sources to explore, from a Euro-Mediterranean perspective, the multifaceted world of oracular language as well as the use of prophecy from ancient to contemporary times, according to an interdisciplinary and comparative approach. The conference will also examine medieval, modern, and contemporary rewritings of sibylline or oracular themes, both in texts and images.

Sibille, profeti e oracoli. Testi e immagini dal mondo antico al contemporaneo

Nel 1994 Ileana Chirassi Colombo organizzò all’Università di Macerata un convegno internazionale intitolato “Sibille e linguaggi oracolari” che, mettendo intorno a un comune tavolo di lavoro antichisti, medievisti e modernisti, aprì fruttuose strade di ricerca al crocevia tra storia, storia delle religioni e antropologia. Uno dei nodi problematici era ovviamente la curiosa localizzazione nei monti dell’Appennino umbro-marchigiano di una sibilla, la quale ha dato il nome al Monte Sibilla e alla catena del Monti Sibillini. Negli anni successivi le ricerche su questo tema si sono moltiplicate e la Sibilla dell’Appennino è stata al centro di un vivace rilancio di studi, che ha prodotto però anche moltissima letteratura parascientifica.
Per fare un nuovo punto della situazione e con l’auspicio di aprire originali piste di ricerca, a distanza di trent’anni l’Università di Macerata intende organizzare un convegno di studi su tematiche sibilline, profetiche e oracolari, includendo nell’indagine non solo le fonti letterarie, ma anche quelle iconografiche, al fine di esplorare in una dimensione euromediterranea lo sfaccettato mondo del linguaggio oracolare e dell’uso della profezia dal mondo antico al contemporaneo, con un approccio interdisciplinare e comparativo. Si intende, dunque, indagare, tra testo e immagine, anche riscritture medievali, moderne e contemporanee di tematiche sibilline o legate ai linguaggi oracolari e profetici.

Auf der Decke ist Ariadne dargestellt, die von Theseus schlafend am Strand von Dia zurückgelassen worden ist. Ohne ihr Unglück fassen zu können, blickt sie unmittelbar nach dem Erwachen dem davonsegelnden Theseus hinterher (58-62): immemor at iuvenis fugiens pellit vada remis, irrita ventosae linquens promissa procellae. quem procul ex alga maestis Minois ocellis, saxea ut effigies bacchantis, prospicit, eheu, prospicit et magnis curarum fluctuât undis..} Vergessend schlägt der junge Mann auf seiner Flucht das Meer mit den Rudern und überläßt die ungültig gewordenen Versprechen dem windreichen Sturm. Den erblickt in der Ferne vom algenbedeckten 1 Strand mit traurigen Augen die Tochter des Minos, gleichsam das steinerne Bild einer Bacchantin, ach, erblickt ihn und ist aufgewühlt von den großen Wogen ihres Kummers.

Vielleicht erinnern Sie sich, lieber Herr Erler: Vor einer Reihe von Jahren saßen wir einmal in einem Rigorosum beisammen, und ich legte zuletzt dem Candidaten die Stelle aus Suetons Nero-Vita vor, in der der Kaiser angesichts des großen Feuers in Rom nichts Besseres zu tun findet als im Kitharödengewand von einem Aussichtsturm aus seine eigenen Verse über den Untergang Troias vorzutragen, laetusque flammae, ut aiebat, pulchritudine (Suet. Nero 38,2). Gleich danach übernahmen Sie die Regie des Prüfungsgesprächs, etwa mit den Worten, laetus, ja, das entspreche dem griechischen τέρψις, und damit waren Sie bei einem Ihrer Lieblingsbegriffe. Karen ní Mheallaigh's study "The Moon in the Greek and Roman Imagination" (Cambridge 2020) aims to discuss how the Moon was present in ancient Greek culture, literature, and science. The subject is examined through the lens of literary studies, yet the author remains open to the perspectives offered by the history of science. The book analyzes the motif of the Moon in Greek literature and natural philosophy: myths, various opinions about its physical nature, deliberations about its inhabitants, and imaginary lunar journeys. The subjects addressed in the book are thoroughly examined in the context of the era. The author, however, does not define the scope of the book precisely and tacitly omits the Moon in Roman literature and the history of astronomy unless it relates to natural philosophy. She also makes groundless guesses about scientific instruments in antiquity and compares ancient literary fiction to modern scientific knowledge.

Autor monografije, Vladimir Posavec, rođen je 04.05.1963. godine u Zagrebu gdje je diplomirao dvopredmetni studij povijesti i arheologije na Filozofskom fakultetu. Na poslijediplomskom studiju Odsjeka za povijest istog fakulteta magistrirao je 1998. godine. Radio je kao profesor na nekoliko škola u Zagrebu, a uz to autor je udžbenika za povijest za srednju i osnovnu školu. Također, objavio je nekoliko znanstvenih radova, te više prikaza i znanstvenih recenzija. Redovito objavljuje u časopisu Latina et Graeca, Zagreb. Izdao je, uz ovu, i knjigu Dalmacija u vrijeme Marcelina i Julija Nepota. Autor već na početku knjige, odnosno u Predgovoru navodi razloge i načine na koje je nastala ova knjiga. Naime, kako je već navedeno, autor redovito objavljuje svoje radove u časopisu Latina et Graeca, te je tako povodom dvomilenijske godišnjice smrti cara Augusta Uredništvo biblioteke zamolilo V. Posavca da napiše članak. Međutim, radeći na tome, autor je shvatio da na hrvatskom jeziku do sad ne postoji niti jedna monografija o Augustu te tako odlučio opisati kronološkim putem vladavinu prvog rimskog cara i to prvenstveno, poput analista, služeći se antičkim izvorima. Na samom početku autor se ogradio i izjavio da će opsežniju znanstveno utemeljenu monografiju objaviti nekom drugom prilikom. Knjiga je objavljena u mekanokoričnom izdanju i broji 173 stranice. Od toga 100 stranica rasprave s 499 bilježaka pod tekstom, 56 stranica raznih dodataka, 7 stranica Kazala imena i pojmova, dvostruka stranica s prikazom rodoslovlja Julijevsko-klaudijevske dinastije, a ostatak je prilično skroman popis antičkih vrela (23 unosa) i znanstvene literature (45 unosa). Tekst je obogaćen s 22 ilustracije: odreda fotografije statua, bista, reljefa i ostataka arhitekture. Međutim, kronično nedostaju geografski prikazi, odnosno karte područja o kojem se govori u tekstu kako bi čitatelj imao što bolju predodžbu tadašnjeg stanja. Cijela priča bila bi jasnija, bez ikakvih nedostataka i nedoumica tekla bi dalje. Na početku knjige nalazi se Predgovor, koji je ujedno, kako kaže sam autor "svojevrsni zaključak". Nakon toga slijedi glavni dio naslovljen Imperator Cezar August, a koji je podijeljen na 27 poglavlja. Poslije glavnog dijela slijede Dodaci i Prilog. U Predgovoru poslije svojih "opravdanja" za ovo izdanje, autor u prvom redu navodi antičke izvore koji se dotiču Augusta te koje je on ujedno koristio, neke više, neke manje, tijekom pisanja ove knjige. Nakon Predgovora slijedi veliki naslov Imperator Cezar August. Ispod malog uvoda u priču slijedi prvo poglavlje Oktavijanovo djetinjstvo u kojem autor opisuje rodbinsku vezu Augusta i Gaja Julija Cezara. Zato se u slijedećem poglavlju malo više posvećuje toj vezi te ga naslovljava baš tako Oktavije i Cezar. Opisuje ukratko Građanski rat s Pompejem te prilike koje je Oktavije mogao i/ili je iskoristio da provodi vrijeme s Cezarom kako bi što više učio od njega. Isto tako opisana je i Cezarova smrt. U slijedećem poglavlju Gaj Julije Cezar Oktavijan ukratko je opisano prevrtanje nakon smrti Cezara i posinjenja što je uvelike uznemirilo Marka Antonija pa se zato autor u slijedećem poglavlju pozabavio tom pričom

Not all works enter into conversation with the Classics in a straightforward manner. Part I of this volume, ‘Beyond Fidelity’, examines works that lay claim to an identifiable ancient source text but whose reception is sufficiently fuzzy, idiosyncratic, or impure to place the relationship between the two in question. Part II, ‘Beyond Influence’, takes up works that claim descent from diffuse notions of the ancient world, rather than specific texts, and asks whether it is not the modern work that is in fact the creator of its sources. The final part, ‘Beyond Original’, uses case studies from modern media to radically call into question the necessity for hierarchical metaphors of classical original/modern epigone, and instead explores alternative formulations such as comparison and juxtaposition.

In Scipio Africanus’ trip into the Underworld, which we can read in Punica by Silius Italicus, there is a curious novelty in infernal geography: ten doors. In spite of having the model of Aeneas’ katabasis by Vergil, we believe that this original geography has its roots at the confluence of two literary passages: Juno’s katabasis (Ov. Met. 4.432-480), which contemplates Underworld as a Roman city, and Penelope’s dream (Hom. Od. 19.560-567), when she talks about dream doors.

The paper aims to present the various ways of approach to the problem of inhabitancy of the Moon, that can be found in ancient sources. The scope of possible ways of describing the lunar beings - both anima! and sentient ones - stretches from mythological and fantastic stories to more cautious deliberations. Fabulous tales about the Lunar inhabitants can be found in “True Story” by Lucianus of Samosata (ca. 120-ca. 190 AD), where we are given a detailed description of their physiology and society. More scientific are opinions in Plutarch's (before 50- after 120 AD) treatise On the Face in the Moon. Discussion of some features of Lunar environment leads there to conclusion about possible nature of the inhabitants of the Moon. Between these two ex trem es there are some other notions about the inhabitancy of the Moon, usually very short, that contain elements of the mythology or fable stories (e.g. the lion of Nemea is said to have fallen from the Moon) and early scientific opinions (e.g. the Pythagorean consideration, that day on the Moon is about fifteen times longer that day on the Earth).
The paper is followed by an appendix with quotations from Greek and Latin sources in original languages.

Les positions personnelles des écrivains, leurs conceptions gentilices et politiques, tout comme les grands courants politiques des guerres civiles, ont conduit à modifier la tradition et tout particulièrement à remodeler l'image du fondateur de Rome. On assiste au fond à une interaction continuelle entre le récit traditionnel et les événements politiques des derniers siècles de la République : Sylla, César, Octave-Auguste, pour ne prendre que ces trois noms, ont utilisé à leur profit le Romulus de la tradition, mais cette mystique romuléenne n'a pas peu contribué aux transformations que l'on constate dans la geste de Romulus. La tradition n'est pas restée politiquement neutre. Il importe, quand on s'intéresse à l'histoire des origines de Rome, d'avoir bien présents à l'esprit ces différents phénomènes, pour éviter de prendre pour des faits historiques authentiques les multiples anachronismes qui parsèment les récits traditionnels.

Abstract: Die Monographie würdigt das vergilische Epos in seiner Eigenschaft als Erzählung. Die Aeneis als Erzähltext zu betrachten setzt voraus, sie als eigenständiges Werk wahrzunehmen und die in ihr erzählte Geschichte als solche ernst zu nehmen. Traditionell aber wird in den Interpretationen der Aeneis dem Verhältnis zu den homerischen Epen viel Raum gegeben, und meist wird der Text zuallererst daraufhin untersucht, wie er diese Prätexte imitiert oder adaptiert. In Abkehr von solcher Vorgehensweise folgt „Aeneas als Held und Erzähler“ dem Prinzip, einzelne Junkturen, Verse und Textabschnitte immer zunächst auf den unmittelbaren Kontext und die Erzählung als Ganzes zu beziehen, bevor eventuell andere Texte hinzugezogen werden. Hieraus ergibt sich eine neue Sicht auf die Aeneis und ihre raffinierte erzählerische Struktur. Bei der Auseinandersetzung mit früheren Deutungen wird erkennbar, wie der ständige Rekurs auf Prätexte und Intertextualität dem Textverständnis im Weg sein kann und oft den Blick auf Vergils Erzählkunst verstellt.
        Im Zentrum der Untersuchung steht die Ich-Erzählung des Aeneas in Aeneis 2–3. Hier trägt die Miteinbeziehung bislang unberücksichtigt gebliebener erzähltheoretischer Kategorien in die Textinterpretation dazu bei, die Kohärenz der Erzählung und insbesondere den Spannungsbogen in Aeneis 2 aufzuzeigen. Wenn manche Interpreten Inkonsequenzen in der Erzählhaltung, Einschaltungen des epischen Erzählers, oder inhaltliche Widersprüche konstatieren, so lässt sich dies damit erklären, dass sie die beiden jeder „Erzählung im Nachhinein“ innewohnenden Perspektiven, nämlich die Erzählerperspektive (des erzählenden Aeneas in Karthago) und die Figurenperspektive (des erlebenden Aeneas in Troia) nicht hinreichend beachten. Ebenfalls zu wenig Beachtung fand bisher auch Vergils Umgang mit den unterschiedlichen Graden von Beteiligung des Erzählers am erzählten Geschehen. Sehr deutlich wird dies in Anbetracht der besonderen Konzeption der Hauptfigur, stellt es doch eine nicht zu unterschätzende erzählerische Herausforderung dar, einen Helden, der den Untergang seiner Vaterstadt überlebt und diese verlässt, plausibel als würdigen Vorfahr der Römer zu präsentieren. Ausschlaggebend dafür, dass dies in der Aeneis gelingt, ist Vergils Entscheidung, Aeneas die letzte Nacht von Troia erleben und selbst erzählen zu lassen. In „Aeneas als Held und Erzähler“ wird gezeigt, wie der Autor u.a. den Wechsel sowohl zwischen Erzähler- und Figurenperspektive als auch zwischen unterschiedlichen Graden der Beteiligung des Erzählers am Geschehen einsetzt, um in Aeneis 2 diese Erzählung bis ins letzte Detail stimmig auszuführen. Eine auf der Basis linguistischer Untersuchungen zu den lateinischen Erzähltempora (Serbat, Pinkster) neu –und in Abgrenzung zu Adema– entwickelte Systematik des Tempusgebrauchs in der Aeneis lässt erkennen, dass die Unterscheidung zwischen Erzähler- und Figurenperspektive sich auch im Gebrauch der Tempora bemerkbar macht. Entsprechendes ergibt auch die Beobachtung der Verwendung der Adverbien ecce und tum.
        In den Interpretationen der elf dialogischen Szenen in Aeneis 2 wird besonderes Augenmerk auf den jeweiligen Wissensstand der beteiligten Figuren im Verhältnis zu demjenigen des intradiegetischen Erzählers einerseits und demjenigen der Rezipienten ersten und zweiten Grades andererseits gerichtet. Dabei zeigt sich: Die von einigen Interpreten gegen Aeneas erhobenen Vorwürfe, dass er sich dem Götterwillen widersetze, wenn er versuche, Troia zu verteidigen, erübrigen sich, wenn man berücksichtigt, was seine Figur zu welchem Zeitpunkt des erzählten Geschehens über ihre Bestimmung weiß. Betrachtet man die in Aeneis 2 erzählte Geschichte unabhängig von der sonstigen Überlieferung als diejenige Version der letzten Nacht von Troia, die eben in der Aeneis erzählt wird, stellt man fest, dass sie sich kohärent entwickelt und dass die einzelnen Entscheidungen des Aeneas folgerichtig sind. Höhepunkt und Krisis bildet die Erscheinung der Venus auf dem Dach von Priamus’ Palast: Aeneas wird durch seine göttliche Mutter zu der Einsicht gebracht, dass die Götter Troia dem Untergang geweiht haben, und entschließt sich, die Verteidigung aufzugeben und die Flucht anzutreten. Diese entscheidende Szene von Aeneis 2 wurde bislang von der Diskussion um die „Helena-Szene“ überschattet und in ihrer Bedeutung für die erzählte Geschichte verkannt. Tatsächlich wird die Rezeption des Textes durch die lediglich im Servius-Kommentar bezeugten Verse der Helena-Szene, die allerdings in die Textausgaben für gewöhnlich aufgenommen werden (Aen. 2,567–588), gestört. In „Aeneas als Held und Erzähler“ wird dafür argumentiert, dass der überlieferte Text syntaktisch unproblematisch ist und dass keine Lücke angenommen werden muss. Es wird herausgearbeitet, dass es sich bei der Erscheinung von Venus auf dem Dach um eine Schlüsselszene der Aeneis handelt. In diesem Zusammenhang wird auch erstmals die Korresponsion zwischen der Erscheinung von Venus auf dem Dach in Aeneis 2 und ihrer Erscheinung im Wald bei Karthago in Aeneis 1 aufgezeigt und in den erzähllogischen Zusammenhang der Aeneis eingeordnet. 
        Die ausführliche Diskussion der Gleichnisse beginnt mit einer neuen Definition des epischen Gleichnisses, die in Abgrenzung von früheren Definitionen nicht von der, sprachlichen Repräsentation, sondern vom logischen Gehalt ausgeht. Die Untersuchung der Gleichnisse in Aeneis 2 kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass sie innerhalb der Erzählung die Funktion haben, jeweils einen bestimmten Aspekt des erzählten Geschehens zu abstrahieren und prägnant zu definieren. Dabei erweisen sich die Gleichnisse als extremes Beispiel dafür, dass eine stets vom Vergleich mit den homerischen Epen (und anderen Prätexten) ausgehende Deutungspraxis das Textverständnis beeinträchtigt. Im Fall der Gleichnisse ist es außerdem förderlich, sich nicht nur von den homerischen Prätexten, sondern auch von der zugehörigen Interpretationstradition zu emanzipieren: Seit Wilamowitz zu einer Gleichniskette in der Ilias geäußert hat, dass es „kindisch wäre“, „die tertia comparationis zu suchen“, und vor allem seit H. Fränkels Buch über die homerischen Gleichnisse (1921, 21977) neigt die Gleichnisforschung dazu, sich über die vermeintliche Banalität der Ähnlichkeitsrelation zu erheben, und beschäftigt sich damit, eine Vielzahl von Bezügen zwischen beiden Teilen eines Gleichnisses aufzuzählen und assoziative Bildwelten aufzurufen, die zu interpretatorischer Beliebigkeit geradezu herausfordern. In „Aeneas als Held und Erzähler“ wird gezeigt, dass es bei den Gleichnissen in der Aeneis für das Textverständnis notwendig ist, die Ähnlichkeitsrelation jeweils genau auszuloten, weil man sonst den entscheidenden Gedanken verpasst, der darin auf den Punkt gebracht wird.
        Bei der Annäherung an pietas und fatum als Schlüsselbegriffe der Aeneis-Interpretation wird darauf geachtet, kein vorgefertigtes Konzept an den Text der Aeneis heranzutragen, sondern die Überlegungen aus dem Text abzuleiten. So werden erstmals sämtliche Vorkommen von pietas, pius und impius in der Aeneis erfasst und kategorisiert. Beim Begriff des fatum/der fata wird gefragt, ob eine eindeutige Definition der Bedeutung überhaupt möglich (und erforderlich) ist. Statt dessen wird dafür plädiert, die fata in der Aeneis als „operativen Begriff im Narrativ der Macht“ (S. 83) zu sehen, die in der Erzählung eine kalkulierte Unbestimmtheit haben: als Teil der aitiologischen Argumentation – was ist, ist so, wie es vorhergesagt war und werden sollte. So betrachtet geben sie keine Antwort auf die Frage nach dem Sinn der Geschichte oder nach der Theodizee, sondern sie sind selbst „Teil der Behauptung, dass die (römische) Geschichte einen Sinn hat, und fungieren als leitmotivisch evozierte Chiffre für die Normativität des Faktischen im Narrativ der Macht“ (S. 88).

En esa misiva, pide la interme-diacion de la Academia para presentar un proyecto: Crear una coleccion para traducir al euskera y publicar los clasicos greco-latinos, en cooperacion con los colegios de los Jesuitas. En este articulo se publica esa carta y se analiza el contexto cultural en el que se impulsa ese proyecto, dedicando especial atencion a la relacion entre Orixe y Pedro Lardiazabal y a la revista Jesus’en Biotzaren Deya. A continuacion, para poder explicar mejor el proyecto, se repasan las caracteristicas de otras colecciones de esta epoca. Getty published his commentary on book I in 1940 1 , so we had to wait almost 70 years for a new, more extensive analysis. The short remarks by wuilleuMieR and le BonnieC (as footnotes, 1962) 2 and more comprehensive commentary by GaGliardi (1989) 3 filled the gap only partially (viansino provided the whole poem with notes mainly by collecting comparandas, 1995; however, roChe [= R.] did not list this edition in the bibliography 4). Lucan studies have flourished astonishingly, especially in the last two decades. Apart from numerous papers scattered throughout various journals we have been given new monographs, collective works, and commentaries. Justifying the need for a new commentary to book I is therefore redundant. The work consists of an extensive introduction (pp. 1-64), text (with short critical apparatus, pp. 65-87), commentary (pp. 91-390), and comprehensive bibliography (pp. 391-406). It ends with helpful indices (index verborum, locorum, nominum et rerum, pp. 407-418). Defining in the preface the goals of his commentary, R. speaks "of respectfully preserving what is good, of reworking, correcting, or extending what seems now less relevant in Getty's 1940 commentary..." (p. VII). These aims have most certainly been achieved. In his introduction, Getty discussed in turn Lucan's life and work, problem of the hero of the poem, Lucan's historical authorities, geographical knowledge, and rhetoric. R. omits three issues brought up by Getty, namely biography, geography and the problem of the hero, but supplements and updates considerably the last two matters, and expands the introduction with issues overlooked by his predecessor. He therefore discusses the structure of book I, its significance for the whole poem and connections between the book and the other parts; moreover, he analyses not only the historical sources but also relationships between Lucan and Homer, Virgil, Horace, Ovid, Manilius, and Seneca. R. examines Stoic elements as well, and brings up matters of narration-the problem of apostrophe in particular (he bases himself on Culler's statements 5). One of more important issues discussed in the first part of the introduction is the change of the narrator's attitude in the poem-his relation to the principate, pp. 5-10 (some scholars, recognizing this change, divide the poem into books I-III and following). R. opts for consistency 6 and on pp. 7-10 discusses in more detail two crucial passages which are used as arguments for the narrator's change (the invocation of Nero, ll. 33-66-here, he emphasizes the conventional nature of the panegyric; the positive portrayal of Domitius, II 478-534). However, it is not only Lucan's attitude towards Caesar and the principate that fits into discussion about the "unity" of the poem, but also the narrator's relation to Pompey. Duckworth hat sich bemüht, durch eine ausführliche Untersuchung 1 den Nachweis zu erbringen, daß in der Aeneis der Goldene Schnitt 2 ein beherrschendes Prinzip der Komposition darstellt, und zwar aufsteigend von den kleinsten, aus nur wenigen Versen bestehenden Einheiten bis zum Ganzen des Werkes. Das Buch ist von der europäischen Philologie mit einem gewissen Unbehagen aufgenommen worden 3. En los estudios sobre la mujer en la Antigüedad, las esclavas que eran utilizadas para amenizar las fiestas privadas de los Atenienses adolecen de la falta de un estudio riguroso. Se pretende mostrar en la medida de nuestras posibilidades a estas jóvenes esclavas a la luz del Simposio de Jenofonte, así como realizar un estudio transversal para atisbar algo de la técnica de danza que empleaban según los vestigios iconográficos de que disponemos, como si de una metodología de la danza se tratara. Asimismo, se analizará a las jóvenes acróbatas, de las que la bibliografía es inexistente. El trabajo, por lo tanto, trata de manera interdisciplinar cuestiones filológicas, iconográficas y artísticas en un tipo de investigación que procura aunarlas.

El baile flamenco es una profesión con elevado riesgo de lesiones debido, entre otros factores, a las exigentes demandas de esfuerzo y a las vibraciones derivadas de los impactos del zapateado. El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar la prevalencia de antecedentes de algias y lesiones en estudiantes de baile flamenco en las enseñanzas artísticas profesionales para conocer el grado de relación del dolor como factor predisponente de lesión. La muestra analizada consta de 75 alumnas de Conservatorios Profesionales de Danza de Andalucía (17.4 ± 4.4 años). Se realizó una entrevista directa basada en preguntas dicotómicas sobre la aparición de antecedentes de algias y lesiones en 7 conjuntos articulares: pies, tobillos, rodillas, coxo-femorales, columna lumbar, columna cervical y hombros. A Cultural History of Color is a six-volume series examining the changing cultural understandings, interpretations, and utilizations of color throughout history. Each volume has the same structure and begins with a general overview of the major attitudes toward and uses of color in the historical period examined. The introduction is followed by contributions from experts, who investigate color under ten chapter headings which are identical in each of the volumes: philosophy and science, technology and trade, power and identity, religion and ritual, body and clothing, language and psychology, literature and performing arts, art, architecture and interiors, and artefacts. Accordingly, the reader has the option of taking either a synchronic or a diachronic approach to the information provided. One volume can be read to gain a broad knowledge of color in a specific period or, alternatively, a theme or topic can be followed throughout history by reading the appropriate chapter in several volumes. This volume aims to broaden our understanding of the related genres of parables, fables, and similes in the Graeco-Roman world. These genres, which make use of narrative analogy, appear in early Christian and ancient
Jewish literatures and in various Graeco-Roman sources. However, despite the fact that these texts were part of the wider cultural context of Graeco-Roman antiquity, they have not yet been thoroughly studied in
relation to each other. The present volume brings together contributions on a range of Graeco-Roman, Jewish, and Christian sources, so as to contribute to the study of parables, fables, and similes across disciplinary boundaries. The contributions highlight the fluid boundaries between these different genres, but also demonstrate how their adoption and adaption in different literary works give expression to the distinct identities of the composers.

An analysis of the use of figurative language is essential for an understanding of the Lucanian epic. Not only are the characters' distinctive traits conveyed by figurative language, but the civil war's impact on Rome and her citizens is also demonstrated by these means. Through personification, apostrophe and similes, a self-contained figure of Roma is created, with the Roman citizens as her family and Cato as her father and husband. Lucan thereby presents the civil war as Rome's funus. This paper shows how a tension-filled ambivalence is created by depicting a Rome that is simultaneously 'dead' and 'actually still alive': In this way, the bellum civile is both the cause of death and a grand funeral rite. La investigación tiene como objetivo mostrar los ideales femeninos presentes en los textos de autores latinos de la época Republicana e Imperial (Cicerón, Salustio, Propercio, Ovidio, Tácito, Juvenal, Musonio Rufo y Plinio entre otros) relacionados con la educación de las mujeres de la élite romana, a través de las descripciones de dos ideales femeninos: la puella docta y la matrona docta.

Reception has become a productive subfield within classical studies, and among the most productive scholars of classical reception has been Martin Winkler, professor of Classics at George Mason University, whose focus has been on cinema.2 Aware of the importance of the ‘seventh art’ as one of the main narrative forms in the recent ‘age of image’ and interested in expanding the reach of classics, Winkler has developed in his work the idea of cinematic philology.
