Abstract
This paper presents a mobile game to be played by fifth and sixth grade students during their free time, to improve the knowledge they obtain at school. The game uses a unique story and various interaction mechanisms (e.g., drawing on the screen, tilting the phone) to take the focus away from the educational aspects, so that the players feel like they are playing, not studying. User tests have been performed, showing that most students improved their knowledge and providing feedback for future developments.

The paper presents a design of a mobile serious game, suitable for primary school students, consisting of a set of tasks for solving. The design offers adaptability in terms of the learning process (learning sequence) and content. Adaptability is realized depending on the success/failure of the students and spent time for solving the tasks, the task difficulty and task type. The motivation of the learner is provoked by collecting points and virtual objects. To experiment the applicability of the design, a prototype of an educational math game for the third-grade students based on the templates (12 kinds of elementary games, suitable for mobile realization and this age group) is created. Math problems are presented in different game levels, where students can collect coins and gold bars, depending on their learning progress.

This paper reports the effects of game technology on student learning in mathematics as investigated in two data sets collected from slightly different subjects. In the first, 41 second graders (7 or 8 years old) from two classes used either a technology-based game or a paper-based game for 5 weeks. For the next 13 weeks, both classes used a technology-based game either two times per week, or more than three times per week. A quasi-experimental control-group design with repeated measures analysis of variance and analysis of covariance was employed to explore performance differences between groups. The second study examined student learning in relation to characteristics such as their game performance, attitudes toward the game and toward mathematics, and gender and ethnicity. During a 4-month period, 50 second grade students from three classes played a technology-based game under conditions that varied depending on their teacher's direction. Multiple regression was used to determine the relationship between students' arithmetic scores and learner characteristics. Descriptive analyses by ability level, gender and ethnicity, and interview data about attitudes toward the technology game were also analyzed. Results from the two studies revealed that using a technologybased game in the classroom was beneficial to students of all ability levels in learning arithmetic skills. Practitioner notes What is already known about this topic • Technology and games have yielded consistently positive results with regard to motivation, persistence, curiosity, attention and attitude toward learning. • The accessibility and flexibility of handheld devices can provide students with more integral and spontaneous opportunities to fully take advantage of "off-moments" from classroom activity to support learning. • There are insufficient data to validate the contribution of technology to student learning.

Numerous games are developed today, it leads people to easily obtain many kind of games, for example from online application store such us Google Play and Apple store. This paper reports the development of mobile game application containing educational content for primary school students who study mathematics. The game is called JarMat. The students can learn about addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division by doing tasks that are interactively provided by the game. The tasks are randomly generated by the game system, and players should finish it within a limited time. The game will be over when they fail three times, then the score will be accumulated and stored. Reward will be given if they finish the task before the end of time limit and get a higher score. The difficulty level of the task is determined by the ability of players which depends on experience and time to finish the task. The research of this game development is conducted through reference studies and simila...

Education in every country is very critical to each one of us. This project seeks to identify the problems associated with learning at the elementary level, and the highlights the effects of poor educational foundations have on children when they grow to learn at the advanced level. The project proposes the designing and implementing of an educational video game app that can assist children from ages 2 to 7 years in overcoming the challenges associated with poor educational foundation in most developing countries in Africa especially. This app is design by creating an intuitive mobile application that will aid in the understanding of basic concepts associated with learning and the ability for elementary school children to employ this in their respective everyday activities. The project is also designed to encourage children in the whole study process hence not making it boring but exciting and more fun for children as well. It also seeks to help parents’ teachers and guardians to track the progress of children who use the application and helps them know the needed support that they require to make each study session a success. The study incorporates a rigorous literature review that seeks to identify all the gaps associated with solving the problem. This project adopts the Scrum methodology. The scrum method is a simple adaptive framework to deliver working software in sprints. It has three main stakeholders the Product owner, scrum master and the team members. It uses two main artifacts namely the product backlog and the sprint backlog to guide the team during sprints. The study concluded that the use of educational video games in learning math and English by the children is helpful since the children can quickly grasp the concepts within very short period.

The development of information technology is now very fast. Almost all aspects of life are touched by information technology, including games in learning. There are various kinds of games in learning, one of which is an android-based mathematics learning game. This article describes a descriptive research study, which aims to describe how interesting android-based mathematics learning games according to junior high school students. The research subjects were 120 students in grade 7 junior high school. Students were given assignments at home to play Android-based mathematics learning games that have been downloaded through the playstore, then the students were given a questionnaire about mathematics learning games that were interesting for students. The results of the questionnaire were analyzed descriptively then discussed in accordance with the relevant theory.

Games that improve the ability of elementary school students to learn abstract things is needed more now than ever before. Learning media is important in presenting the subject of learning. The purpose of this study was to develop a mathematical learning media design on plane subject using the Android operating system applicable on mobile phones. The methodology used was Research and Development (RnD) with ADDIE approach. The research included three stages 1) Analysis of the needs and availability of mathematics learning media needed by elementary school students. 2). Designing the appearance of puzzle and games subject suitable for elementary school students. 3) Development of mathematics learning media using android-based puzzle games.

Drawing on the work of James Gee in literacy, we apply his contemporary approach to not only the knowledge systems of mathematics but also the processes by which school mathematics can be learned through the digital games environment. Using a number of games, and young people working these games, we propose that there are novel ways to learn not only many of the concepts that are integral to school mathematics, but such concepts can be learned in ways that are deep. The games environment offers an engaging environment that is substantially different from that experienced in formal school settings. We suggest that many of the principles that underpin the games environment may create new opportunities for teaching and learning that will (re)engage learners and learning of school mathematics.

The traditional method for learning the multiplication tables is a repetitive and boring task. Teachers try to find new methods to motivate children in this tedious duty, and one of the lines to consider is to integrate en-tertainment into educational processes. This work presents a new multimedia interaction approach in order to allow children to practice these math opera-tions and have fun. The learning process has been gamified by means of two mini-games designed for mobile platforms, based on meromictic or repetitive learning. The genre of these mini-games have been selected according to children preferences: one turn-based fighting and other throwing-objects game. A series of proposed multiplications have to be solved during the play to per-form the player actions. Moreover, in order to support learning engagement, both have been visualized through Augmented Reality, combining real and virtual reality. This paper discusses the good results of mixing entertainment with some learning tasks, due to the engagement of the children to the mobile based games. A pilot study has been performed in order to evaluate the learn-ing effectiveness and usability of the proposal. Results support that playing the video games makes this tedious multiplication practice more enjoyable and attractive for children so they improve their math skills.

The acronym STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics has entered the agenda of educational policies. The development of mobile game-based learning has been seen as a new line of research and technological development in the field of educational technology, STEM education and game design. These fields are rather new and intrinsically multidisciplinary, making it even more exciting. There is a growing interest in Mobile Game related research, whether strictly technological or applied in social contexts. In this chapter, we thought a nice way to connect this data and depict the current scenario would be to break the subject into pieces: Game Design; Affection and Play; Mobile Learning; Games for Learning; Science and Mathematics Education; and lastly, summarizing it in the Games for STEM Education section. Our conclusions point to the fact that we are taking the first steps in a digital game development process for teaching mathematics in the school environment and the ...
