Abstract

The Second International Congress on Science and Technology for the Conservation of Cultural Heritage was held in Seville, Spain, June 24-27, 2014, under the umbrella of the TechnoHeritage network. TechnoHeritage is an initiative funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitivity dedicated to the creation of a network which integrates CSIC and University groups, private companies and end users such as foundations, museums or institutions. The network’s purpose is to foster the creation of transdisciplinary (and not only multidisciplinary) initiatives focused on the study of all assets, movable or immovable, that make up Cultural Heritage. The congress was dedicated to six topics, namely (1) Environmental assessment and monitoring (pollution, climate change, natural events, etc.) of Cultural Heritage; (2) New products and materials for conservation and maintenance of Cultural Heritage; (3) Agents and mechanisms of deterioration of Cultural Heritage (physical, chemical, biological), including deterioration of modern materials used in Contemporary Art and information storage; (4) Development of new instruments, non invasive technologies and innovative solutions for analysis, protection and conservation of Cultural Heritage; (5) Security technologies, remote sensing and G.I.S. for the protection and management of Cultural Heritage; and (6) Significance, social value and policies for the conservation of Cultural Heritage. This volume publishes a total of seventy-two contributions which reflect some of the most recent responses to the challenge of cultural assets conservation and the application of different scientific approaches to the common goal of the conservation of Cultural Heritage.

Technologies for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage-A Systematic Review of the Literature

This work establishes the technological elements that have enabled the preservation, promotion, and dissemination of tangible and intangible cultural heritage in the period from 2018 to 2022. For this, a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted in the scientific databases Scopus, Science Direct, IEEE and Web of Science, which facilitated the identification of 146 articles related to the topic. A quantitative and qualitative analysis of the journals, authors and topics was carried out, detailing the important variables required to establish the sought-out elements; for this purpose, the following were quantified in the papers: type, topic, categorization, country, and language; in the publications, the type of heritage chosen, the place of the heritage and the type of intervention were investigated. The number of publications reporting the use of some type of technology was also identified, finding that 70% of them show a technological approach to preserve cultural heritage, while 30% refer to other types of interventions. The technologies reported to be used the most are 3D digital technologies (44% of those showing technological applications), augmented reality or virtual reality, henceforth AR/VR (15%).

This is the third Technology Watch Report (TWR3). It continues DigiCULT’s work in providing heritage institutions with researched assessments of current and emerging information technologies that they can use in their efforts to expose,manage better, and make more accessible the wealth of our cultural heritage. The DigiCULT technology assessments identify developments that can be deployed without further work, those that would require further development or repurposing and those that are still some way away from having deployable implications but which show promise. The cultural heritage sector suffers from a lack of access to accurate, accessible, and relevant information about technological developments.We continue to use the word ‘ technology’ in its broadest sense to cover methods (e. g. information retrieval, visualisation) and procedures, standards, hardware (e. g. RFID), and software applications.

New Technologies for Cultural Heritage Documentation and Conservation: The Role of Geomatics

The concept of Cultural Heritage is rapidly evolving, connoting the union of an intrinsic and an extrinsic value that includes several economic, territorial, environmental, academic and social aspects. The terrible natural disasters (cyclones, cloudbursts, floods, landslides, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes) that periodically occur weaken our fragile cultural heritage, which is constantly exposed to risk factors. Failing to protect it has negative effects on the sectors mentioned above, as we know that for some of these phenomena the anthropic action (i.e. pollution, improper use) actively contributed to their occurrence. In compliance with this wider view, the scientific and technological research is acting in different fields: from chemical, physical and biological sciences to nanosciences, from the methods of spatial positioning to info sciences.

Conservation Science is a very recent issue developed in the last five decades and the International Scientific Community is nowadays much larger than it used to be until thirty or twenty years ago and this is "per se" the demonstration that the protection and conservation of our cultural property cannot be successful without science and research. In 2001 UNI, the Italian standardization body presented a request to CEN (Comité Européen de Normalisation) to create a new TC (Technical Committee) dealing with the conservation of cultural property. The scope of CEN/TC 346 is the standardization in the field of definitions and terminology, methods of testing and analysis, to support the characterisation of materials and deterioration processes of movable and immovable heritage, and the products and technologies used for the planning and execution of their conservation, restoration, repair and maintenance. After a three year period the updating of the documents until now discussed is presented.

The preservation of this unique patrimony requires fundamental effort. The Koning Boudewijn Stichting (Rosiers et al., 1998) estimated the total cost necessary to maintain or improve the building heritage to such an extent that it would only require regular maintenance for a reference period of 50 years, to be 2.25 billion EURO. This text provides a global overview of the state of the art in (applied) research and practice. The European Cultural Heritage is an invaluable legacy. Europe's cultural heritage is the product of many cultures that have contributed over centuries to its development. We recognise the potential for the cultural heritage to play a proactive role in enriching and enhancing quality of life, in delivering answers to basic questions about our historic origins, in providing solutions to environmental and construction-related problems, and in interacting with other internal social, economic and political drivers.
