This project focused on implementing an active, hands-on methodology through narratives and interdisciplinary challenges. Using the “escape room” format as a teaching tool, students applied knowledge from various degree subjects, combining physical and cognitive tasks, which boosted both motivation and engagement. The results showed that this approach promotes meaningful learning and the development of skills such as critical thinking and teamwork. However, a few areas for improvement were noted, including better management of cognitive and physical load, with recommendations to reduce session lengths and encourage greater student autonomy. The experience also highlighted the importance of student involvement and consensus in the design of activities. This educational initiative underscores the need for pedagogical approaches that integrate the cognitive, emotional, and social aspects of learning, aligning with current educational demands.

It will not be comprehensive, but rather focus on three aspects that provide some promise of future advances in the area. These are different ways of inquiring local communities about those values, the creation of tools to incorporate those values into storytelling and, finally, to use mental maps as a form of data collection regarding those values.

Traditionally visitor surveys have helped to fill this gap, albeit limited to their incomplete and occasional nature. This paper presents a methodology for using cellular antenna metadata for understanding tourism flows. This information is collected systematically by the mobile phone network but only recently has its big data potential begun to be exploited for understanding socio-economic phenomena. The present case study of the Roman gold mine of Las Médulas (León, Spain) provides a model for tourism impact analysis using anonymized data from cell phone towers.

This paper focuses on the educational dimension of landscape, as a means to better facilitate its social acceptance and hence its inclusion in planning and management processes. The relation between landscape education and social perception, through a few European examples will be analysed to ascertain whether the principles of the Convention are being complied with effectively. The authors introduce four case studies of heritage-related education carried out in three European countries (Spain, Norway and Italy). These case studies provide the possibility to coherently analyse a wide range of activities and initiatives occurring at various scales and levels: geographic, local and sectoral. In addition, they describe the pedagogical potential of cultural landscapes and cultural heritage, and highlight some of the educational strategies and measures currently used in this field.

Neither models nor in situ measurements can fully describe this variability, so assumptions have to be made in applications including atmospheric modelling and radiative transfer. In this work, parameter estimation has been used to optimise six different assumptions relevant to frozen hydrometeors in passive microwave radiative transfer. This covers cloud overlap, convective water content and particle size distribution (PSD), the shapes of large-scale snow and convective snow, and an initial exploration of the ice cloud representation (particle shape and PSD combined). These parameters were simultaneously adjusted to find the best fit between simulations from the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) assimilation system and nearglobal microwave observations covering the frequency range 19 to 190 GHz. The choices for the cloud overlap and the convective particle shape were particularly well constrained (or identifiable), and there was even constraint on the cloud ice PSD. The practical output is a set of improved assumptions to be used in version 13.0 of the Radiative Transfer for TOVS microwave scattering package (RTTOV-SCATT), taking into account newly available particle shapes such as aggregates and hail, as well as additional PSD options. The parameter estimation explored the full parameter space using an efficient assumption of linearly additive perturbations. This helped illustrate issues such as multiple minima in the cost function, and non-Gaussian errors, that would make it hard to implement the same approach in a standard data assimilation system for weather forecasting. Nevertheless, as modelling systems grow more complex, parameter estimation is likely to be a necessary part of the development process.

T he diagram indicates various periods of occupation in Roman times and possibly in Medieval times. Palaeoeconomic bases, related to cereal and chestnut culture are discussed, as well as the changing impact of the pastoral activities between the two periods.

It approved the project called Research programme on technologies for the conservation and valorization of cultural heritage (TCP), designed to create a strong cluster of research groups around the theme of applying technology to the study, protection and valorization of cultural heritage. This cluster, once consolidated, should be able to compete with similar networks on an international level. The funding necessary was provided by the new Consolider-Ingenio 2010 program, designed for large-scale support of scientifically competitive networks.

There, a Roman gold mine tore the land and left behind spectacular remains presided by the columns, picuezos, reaching to the sky, in a place where caves and precipices, always reddish in color, wading in a sea of chestnut trees. The visitor or inhabitant can today not only enjoy the natural beauty of this magical landscape, but also the cultural resources created by research: visitor centers –particularly the Aula Aqueológica in the namesake village of Las Médulas–, as well as various itineraries for vehicles, pedestrians or cyclists, which allow for active tourism in the area. The Fundación Las Médulas (www.fundacionlasmedulas.org) today plays an important role in the management and sociocultural promotion of this landscape, a Foundation participated by public administrations, important companies with strong local presence, and research and education institutions. As a tool to understanding the past, Archaeology enables the landscape to benefit from the rich heritage it includes. In this paper we outline what this concept truly means, including the diversity of origins and the multiple ramifications it has for society and territorial planning as a whole. Afterwards, an example of applied scientific activity in a particular type of landscape: Roman gold mining areas has resulted in one of the most richly studied and best preserved cultural landscapes in Europe. The pro-active attitude on behalf of research which has been applied in some examples from the Hispanic Northwest is a model which can be applied to many other depressed regions of the continent, where mining activity has left behind only poverty and abandonment. http://www.crcnetbase.com/doi/abs/10.1201/b11809-6

Did You Learn Anything an Exploration of Student Prior Knowledge and Course Learning Outcomes
Fragua (Madrid, España), Sep 17, 2020

Regarding this, Bass comments in the article “The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning: What’s the Problem?” the following: “I realized I didn’t know really if the better students in a course who demonstrated a real understanding of the material by the end of the semester were actually acquiring that understanding in my course, or were merely the percentage of students who entered the course with a high level of background and aptitude” (3). Indeed, there is a need for professors across the curriculum in higher education to consider student prior knowledge in relation to course learning outcomes for the sake being able to emphasize specific learning outcomes and to help guide pedagogy. This paper, taking a scholarship of teaching and learning approach, focuses on three different courses and explores the problem of understanding student prior knowledge in relation to course learning outcomes and includes results pre and post student surveys, feedback from students, and final course grades. Overall, in a collaborative spirit, this paper seeks to help other professors refocus their attention on what they specifically want students to learn by the end of a course, why learning such objectives is important, and how to help students achieve these learning goals.

Action COST A27 LANDMARKS has been a successful attempt at establishing an effective transnationa... more Action COST A27 LANDMARKS has been a successful attempt at establishing an effective transnational interdisciplinary project around the theme of landscapes. Running from 2004 to 2007, and coordinated from Madrid, A27 has proven extremely fruitful: 17 conferences and workshops, 13 edited publications. The best result, however, has been the establishment of working networks across fields and national borders. In this chapter we revise the scientific environment in which this project was conceived and generated, as well as the internal organisation it adopted. Our intention, though, is not to congratulate ourselves for our good work. We want to go over the important challenges faced, how they were met, and what lessons can be learned for future collaborative European projects. In order to achieve transnational and interdisciplinary integration, the internal structure of the project was organised around objectives and work packages which required side-by-side collaboration. Some problems, though, were encountered, particularly relating to the different degree of involvement of different partners, which tended to be self-defeating. Another problem is the lack of visibility of that research given the nature of COST publishing. In conclusion, landscapes as a theme are a good way to push interdisciplinarity and transnationality forward in a field which is still being created and which requires these two to be in full swing.
