Supporting New Parents In Their Desire to Share Baby's Life

Going to movies in a group and inviting friends over to watch TV are common social activities. This social engagement both improves the viewing experience and helps us stay close with our friends and family. To bring this feeling of co-presence to the Internet, we developed a set of prototypes that enable people to feel more connected by watching web video together in sync. We present the preliminary results of a quantitative usage study and show initial evidence that simultaneous video sharing online can help people feel closer and more connected to their friends and family.

This paper presents MobiSNA -a mobile video social networking application that supports the exploration, sharing, and creation of video contents through social networks. The MobiSNA project provides the user with an easy to use experience of accessing video content from mobile devices (e.g., mobile phones, PDAs) over wireless broadband networks (e.g., 4G networks). This demo focuses on the key functions of MobiSNA which support social network-based video exploration, real-time video sharing, video blogging, video interest groups, and video story construction. A system architecture of MobiSNA is also proposed.

Over the last decade, research in the CHI and CSCW communities has expanded in scope to move away from a solely-workplace focus to investigations of the ways in which family members appropriate and make use of technology as a part of domestic life. Our research premise is ‘the home is not the office’; in order to understand how to design technology to fit within and extend the routines of family members, one must carefully consider the intricate nuances of domestic life, including family and friend relationships and the everyday routines people employ. Within this space, our research broadly focuses on the study and design of ubiquitous and mobile technologies for family members. This has included the study of communication and awareness needs for families [1,7], family calendars [8-10], family photo sharing [11,13], and video communication systems for families [2-4,6,13]. We are now building on this research to explore: connecting family members over distance in situations where technology may be limited, the design of systems for families to share health information, and the design of technologies focused on mobile shopping.

Video content has become available on an increasingly diverse set of devices and from an ever growing number of sources, creating a vast amount of choice for viewers. At the same time, the varying methods of viewing, interacting with, and sharing content have diverged. This paper introduces neXtream, a new approach to delivering video by integrating multiple devices, content sources, and social networks. This concept is developed following research in social television and converged applications, providing both personalization features and social interaction. NeXtream delivers video by dynamically generating streams of video customized to a viewer, while facilitating a common dialog between users around the content, creating both a user-and community-centric viewing experience. NeXtream integrates smartphones, PCs, and TVs to deliver video content to viewers. The paper presents the system concept, theory, and architecture, and describes the developed prototype.

Grandparents now frequently look forward to video chatting with their young grandchildren: As many as 85% of families with babies and toddlers have used video chat to help their little ones keep in touch with with grandparents who live far away. Despite this prevalence of usage, research examining video chat use by babies under two in their own homes is limited. And while recent lab research has demonstrated that toddlers can learn new words via video chat, it is unclear how families are using these technologies in their typical day-to day lives. This chapter examines exactly what parents and grandparents do to navigate across the digital divide. Sesame Workshop's Rosemarie Truglio and Jennifer Kotler then provide a commentary discussing how the mission of Sesame Workshop to harness the power of media to help children grow smarter (academic skills and executive function skills), stronger (physical health and resiliency skills), and kinder (building empathy, compassion, and other prosocial behavior) is put into practice to develop better media tools for families. They discuss how other engaging media tools, like videos designed specifically for families in these circumstances, can add to families' tool box when they are parenting or grandparenting at a distance.

Streaming media is pervasive on the Internet now and is continuing to grow rapidly. Most streaming media systems have adopted the model of broadcast. Unfortunately, the nature of the broadcast-like one-to-many communication model is not able to foster interaction and collaboration among people. In this paper we discuss a community-oriented communication model for sharing streaming video and introduce a prototype, I-Views. This is a system that permits individuals to use published, communally-owned media clips in order to author narratives by assembling clips, and to build communities of similar interests based on comparison of these narratives. By offering shared authorship, tools and virtual environments, I-Views demonstrates some potential directions for 'sharable video.'

In this paper we report on the design and implementation of an initial prototype to explore how to better situate in the home social media content individually generated by family members. We considered whether existing infrastructure and practices of social media might be leveraged to offer new kinds of shared family experiences. We found that families perceived the system to be "cosy" and intimate, especially in contrast to Facebook, and as a result 'shared to care'. While aspects of the design had a strong role to play in faciliating this perception, participants enacted their own boundaries of sharing and disclosure based on pre-existing practices and attitudes toward social technologies. The study demonstrated that there are productive design opportunities in home systems that can leverage content via a broad range of social media applications.
