Contemporary CAD systems enable 3D clothing simulation for the purpose of predicting the appearance and behavior of conventional and intelligent clothing in real conditions. The physical and mechanical properties of the fabric and the simulation parameters play an important role in this issue. The paper presents an analysis of the parameters of the polygonal computer model that affect fabric drape simulation. Experimental research on physical and mechanical properties were performed for nine fabrics. For this purpose, the values of the parameters for the tensile, bending, shear, and compression properties were determined at low loads, while the complex deformations were analyzed using Cusick drape meter devices. Cloth simulation and fabric measurement are tightly linked areas of research. In order to obtain high quality animations of dressed models, the properties of the simulated garment must first be evaluated in an accurate and adapted way. As cloth is a very complex, isotropic material, the evaluation of its properties is difficult to achieve, and various approaches exist. Depending on the design of the simulation engine, the measurements will be done differently, so that the outputted parameters match the inputs required by the simulator. Various issues must be considered, and depending on the complexity of the simulated garments, tradeoffs must be made in order to reconcile the real features of the cloth (stitches, layers…) and the computational capacities of the simulator (numerical integration, collision detection…)

One of the major challenges in Computer Graphics concerns the 3D representation and physically-based simulation of garments. In our research, we are working closely with the textile industry, investigating three different classes of problems. First, we aim at developing techniques and methods for cloth simulation specifically aimed at the Web3D context. Second, we are defining a cross-application data exchange format among the different CAD systems and applications used in the textile industry, including the additional information needed to support 3D simulations. Third, we are implementing a tool that complements traditional textile CAD systems (which are based on 2D graphics), allowing the user to automatically obtain VRML-based 3D previews of the garment (for evaluating garment designs and also easily publishing them on the Web). This paper illustrates the results we have achieved in these three directions.

Drape behaviour of virtual clothing can be expressed numerically using the technical parameters such as tension, stretch and pressure. This led to the development of an objective approach to analysing virtual fit of clothing, which has been discussed in this paper in context of a men's shirt by varying the ease at the chest area and changing the lengths. Avatars morphed with the measurements of M-sized British men derived from body scan data were utilised to simulate two different sets of pattern pieces (each set comprising 31 pairs of front and back panels with varying ease from 0.0 to 15 cm at the chest area at an interval of 0.5 cm) of sleeveless men's shirt within two different CAD systems with consideration of FAST data of fabrics. Findings indicated that the change in tension, stretch and pressure followed a definite pattern when the ease at chest area was decreased or increased within the pattern pieces keeping the fabric properties unchanged. This has opened a new avenue for a more effective application of 3D simulation tools within the fashion-product-development process.

Drapeability is one of the most important visual properties affecting garment appearance. Even though there are many studies concerned with fabric drape, understanding about the drape behaviour of garments is very limited. This study analyzes the key properties affecting the drape behaviour of garments to provide prediction equations. Results are statistically analyzed. From multiple regression analysis, drape rank scores obtained from subjective analyses are predicted using weight, bending modulus and extensibility measured at 100 gf/cm with a correlation coefficient of 0.94. Ranking values obtained from subjective analyses can be more easily predicted using both circularity and wave length minimum. A new equation was derived to predict drape rank score values of garments (correlation coefficient r = 0.97) depending on circularity and wavelength minimum.

A physics-based cloth modelling system has been proposed, targeted at the virtual prototyping of garments of real interest and production. The system should allow designers to validate their styling/design choices on a digital apparel model before (or in place of) any physical prototyping. Taking into account the design complexity of real tailored apparel, CAD apparel models can be defined incorporating information about tailoring/assembly features. A graphical interface allows a user to create his/her garment by interactively specifying design elements such as layers, seams, pockets, constraints, aesthetic and functional lines. A discrete Newtonian particle-based model is considered for physics-based cloth simulation, originally defined for single textile layers and then extended to real-shaped apparel, by taking into account structural properties of materials and the previously defined design/assembly rules. Several garment models are proposed as test cases, designed for real apparel manufacturing and simulated on virtual mannequins.

Garment design is traditionally carried out in two dimensions, and some software has been developed and applied in the garment industry in the design of garment panels. In this paper, a new tool for the interactive design of garments in three dimensions is introduced. Making use of an elastic surface model, animation allows us to examine the garment design in three dimensions dynamically. The designer can use this tool to visualize his original ideas and changes interactively, and to see the garment vividly portrayed including texture mapping on the final design, before the real cloth panels are cut. Application of this tool in the garment industry could potentially reduce design time and costs substantially.

The simulative development of clothing and other textile products requires a complete set of material parameters to be provided. Currently, different simulation software providers users with different values and formats for these parameters. This paper provides an overview about the most important values and proposed structures for storing both the raw data and the extracted parameters. The structure is implemented in both JSON and XML formats, allowing integration in proven formats for three-dimensional worlds such as gltf and x3d. Finally, a structure for organization of the raw data of the testing devices is described. Following this structure allows automatic processing, normalization and extraction of the parameters in short time. The goal of the paper is to simplify and unify the exchange of material parameters for textile fabrics.

Simulating synthetic garments interactively requires more than the implementation of a simple dynamic system designed only for simple cloth objects. Many issues must be resolved, pertaining to accuracy and computational efficiency, robustness, stability, collision detection and response, and constraint handling. The purpose of this paper is to survey these problems and to describe the solutions embodied in our new garment simulation system.

This work presents the results of our approach in the field of modelling and numerical simulation of a garment in a 3D virtual environment. In our study we take into account the strategic point of approach where the numerical avatar model integrates the garment model by association without difficulty. On the other hand the flattening of 2D and 3D garment patterns need to be associative, accurate and impose the existing fabric deformation linked with a garment drape. The results mentioned in our previous paper showed that the adaptive mannequin morphotype model follows the human body morphology from the scanner, although large deformations were imposed to the initial human body during the creation process presented. This model is dedicated to the ready-to-wear garment sectors except for garments very close-fitting to the body (ease allowance value = 0 or negative) such as corsetry, because in this particular case it is necessary to consider the evolution of the chest for women.
