Abstract
Media are " [media] means effecting or conveying something such as (1) a surrounding or enveloping substance; or (2) a condition or environment in which something may function or flourish; or (3) mode of artistic expression or communication." (Merriam-Webster, n.d.) In the case of ambient media, the humans' natural environment becomes to the "enveloping media" as an environment in which content functions. This work therefore deals with the development of ambient media, far beyond seeing TV as a major entertainment platform in consumers' homes. To satisfy the entertainment-hungry consumer, more and more advanced home entertainment (HE) systems and facilities are required to provide interactive and smart leisure content. This chapter glimpses the future of modern ambient HE systems. Experts in the field of ambient media discuss and contribute to four major lines of the future development of ambient media: (1) social implications, (2) converging media, (3) consumer content, and (4) smart devices.

Ambient media are novel, and this new media form alters our daily-living experience in many ways. Ambient media refer to media environments that are embedded throughout the natural space where people are following their daily activities. These digital media environments become part of the living space and altering our daily-living experience in many ways. The goal of this article is to elaborate the status of ambient media today and to forecast how ambient media will develop in the next decade. It clearly identifies megatrends and develops scenarios (e. g., ambient-assisted living) for the future. These scenarios shall shed light on the potentials and give a glimpse on the potential future development of embedding digital objects into the daily living space. This paper is based on a future wheel Multimed Tools Appl approach and on an analysis of the results of an expert workshop. The article concludes with a discussion of the results and an evaluation of the impact of each scenario.

The medium is the message! And the message was literacy, media democracy and music charts. Mostly one single distinguishable media such as TV, the Web, the radio, or books transmitted the message. No in the age of ubiquitous and pervasive computing, where information flows through a plethora of distributed interlinked media -what is the message ambient media will tell us? What means semantic in this context? Which experiences will it open to us? What is content in the age of ambient media? Ambient media are embedded throughout the natural environment of the consumer -in his home, in his car, in restaurants, and on his mobile device. Predominant sample services are smart wallpapers in homes, location based services, RFID based entertainment services for children, or intelligent homes. The goal of this paper is to define semantic ambient media and discuss the contributions to the SAME 2008 workshop.

This work introduces a new concept of supporting elderly at their homes. The whole framework is being developed under OLDES project: Older People's e-services at home. OLDES aims at developing a very low cost and easy to use entertainment and health care platform designed to ease the life of older people in their homes. The platform is based on a PC corresponding to Negroponte's paradigm of a € € 100 device, giving the guarantee of an affordable system. OLDES provides: user entertainment services, through easy-to-access thematic channels and special interest forums supported by animators; and health care facilities based on established Internet and tele-care communication standards. As an example of OLDES platform implementation, two pilot projects are addressed: 100 clients pilot including 10 people with cardiological problems in Bologna, Italy and diabetes pilot in Prague, Czech Republic.

The medium is the message! And the message was literacy, media democracy and music charts. Mostly one single distinguishable medium such as TV, the Web, the radio, or books transmitted the message. Now in the age of ubiquitous and pervasive computing, where information flows through a plethora of distributed interlinked media—what is the message ambient media will tell us? What does semantic mean in this context? Which experiences will it open to us? What is content in the age of ambient media? Ambient media are embedded throughout the natural environment of the consumer—in his home, in his car, in restaurants, and on his mobile device. Predominant sample services are smart wallpapers in homes, location based services, RFID based entertainment services for children, or intelligent homes. The goal of this article is to define semantic ambient media and discuss the contributions to the Semantic Ambient Media Experience (SAME) workshop, which was held in conjunction with the ACM Multimedia conference in Vancouver in 2008. This paper examines the issue of ambient media in the framework of marketing communication on the level of perception by general public. The article states detailed results of broadband research on the topic of Perception of ambient media by general public in the context of communicate efficiency, which has been done by mobile platform in over 80 countries all over the world. The results seem to be the reflection of current situation in the field of individual marketing communication tools and the media which are dealing with still growing "blindness" of the recipients. Commercial and non-commercial subjects are forced to seek new opportunities to communicate with their target group and therefore the right solution could be the usage of ambient media. Authors base their results on the replies of recipients and he demonstrates the value of usage ambient media, and also they show the opportunity to increase the competitiveness of a company, a brand or a product right by means of ambient media use.

We provide an overview over cultural differences between East and West, as starting point for the development of entertainment technology towards cultural transformation. We argue for the impor- tance of future entertainment technology to contrib- ute to cultural transformation processes in the large. We introduce and discuss the ZENetic Computer for the East and the ALICE project for the West. Our concept of Kansei Mediation is supposed to guide the development of theories and frameworks in the context of 'ambient culture'.

Media are becoming constitutive elements of the built environment. From the perspective of mediatization theory, this paper explores the implications of such a claim, with the automobile as an illustrative case, which in turn leads to four observations concerning media and physical space, material and immaterial interfaces, media’s simultaneous functions as means of infotainment/interaction/infrastructure and intelligent environments. Together, they point the way to a media- architectural approach.
